Diner Reviews
  • "We had the tasting menu with wine pairing. Meal and wine were both very good. Open kitchen seating, so not private or romantic, but a great dining experience."

  • "Degustation was a delightful experience. Ambience great, food great, service great. U-shaped seating for 20 around the food preparation area. Get seating in the front near the chef if possible. Chef has a quote from Dante winding around his arm, btw. If you are more than 2 request a corner of the U to better see each other."

  • "This is a great tiny restaurant. It only seats about 20-ish people, and you sit side by side surrounding the chef area. It seemed liked everyone who was there when we were there did the tasting menu, and I would highly recommend it. Not super great for a romantic dinner, as you are not facing each other, but it is delicious, the service is excellent, and it was a great experience."

  • "What a disaster! The hostess was rude, this is a side bar of another restaurant. They seemed to stumble over each other. It's a good decent price point but the service and food don't match the price. This was a major disappointment! Can't say anything the restaurant it's attached to but this side is not worth it... It's a totally pass!"

  • "You have a court side view of your food being prepared. The meticulous plating and attention to the details is impressive. Flavors are brilliantly matched and contrasted for an outstanding dining experience. You can literally taste the passion in the food. Make a reservation and go. We have been back since and will return."

  • "brilliant food, great service and unique. A true find."

  • "It's very original idea, customers aurrounding the open little kitchen like in a "big tepanyaki" table. The only thing is that the communication between the chefs and waiters is as loud as normal and you are "right there" to here it and live it. You feel more in the kitchen than with your partie. Small dishes reasonably tasty, very well plated, a little too small in comparison with the time you wait to get to eat them. Won't regret going, won't be going again though."

  • "The counter open kitchen is very close and intimate. You can feel the chef's attention to detail but the movements are not rushed but almost calming. The 7 course tasting menu is recommended but do not ask what is coming as the surprise should be part of the experience. Starts off slow but ends with a bang. The gradual metamorphisis of plates from calm to explosive is what was best about the dining experience. Highly recommended. Reservations are a must."

  • "Rated 28/30 by Zagat, Grace and Jack Lamb's tiny Franco-Spanish East Village restaurant serves up exquisite small plates via friendly chefs who work their magic in an open, behind-the-bar kitchen. My dinning experience surpassed many one Michelin star establishments. Seven-course prix fixe with wine pairings served by a wonderful staff."

  • "I guess my expectations were a little too high with the place based on other reviews from people probably more impressed with the decor than the food. Although the wine and service were very good, i found the tapas not very impressive especially given the price levels. With the exception of the octopus which was very fresh and well prepared, all the other tapas were so so, presentation was great but the taste was not there. I feel a little pretense in the concept without any back up in the food. I would have preferred much simpler/traditional tapas with top ingredients and quicker execution. Afraid will not return as the food is #1 criteria for my personal choice of restaurants."

  • "My boyfriend and I went to a late seating for the 7-course tasting menu. (By the way it feels almost like 10 courses, because they also give you an amuse-bouche, a cheese course, and a palate-cleanser beyond the listed seven courses.) The food was elegantly prepared and tasted divine. I specifically liked the variety of textures on every plate –– for example, the third course was slices of sweet slow-roasted onion topped with garlic, anchovies, and something else crunchy. It melted in your mouth but the crunch really made it. We also had a squid ink risotto (the fifth course) paired with fresh cilantro, dill, and a leaf that tasted like anise. Never would have thought to put those things together, but it was a really exciting combination."

  • "We had the tasty menu and it was delight. All small portions no surprise there but we both left quite full. Many of the combinations I've seen before at Tickets in Barcelona, Atelier Crenn in SF and other modern place, they did a good job at keeping things simple and tasty but there wasn't the playfulness that I adore at those two places. Two of our favorite dishes was the croquette that started the meal and the carmelized broiche with creme that finished it. While not the most inventive place or the au courant this is an excellent choice for a special intimate dinner. The space is barely wheelchair accessible. The light was good and there is very little noise so conversation is easy to have."

  • "Since the seating is similar to a sushi bar it best to go with no more than 3 people for one of the best & innovative meals you will have in Manhattan at a surprisingly affordable prices"

  • "We are total foodies and the 3 of us at the entire menu. One ordered the chef tasting menu, which had all different things than the regular menu. All the dishes were amazing, but the scallops with squid ink paella was just divine! It's a sushi bar top, open kitchen with small plates. Will be back."

  • "The team here did a great job! The three of us ordered everything on the menu (literally including one tasting menu). the food was delicious featuring seasonal ingredients and innovative preparations, but not frakenfood. We had a large party of nine people and the kitchen did a great job of keeping the food coming. This is definitely going into heavy rotation."

  • "This may have been the best meal I've ever had. Rather than choosing the Chef's Tasting menu, my husband and I decided to order several different dishes from the menu and share them. Each course was phenomenal, but in particular I can't stopping thinking about the scallop paella and the lamb belly with slow poached egg and smoked maple. I understand the menu changes seasonally, and I simply cannot wait to go back!"

  • "Degustation is clearly one of the gems of the East Village. The food and wine are outstanding. The scene is definitely East Village -- small space where you eat at the bar. Chic and fun."

  • "Absolutely loved our meal at Degustation. The brussel sprouts are delicious as was everything we tried. Great for sharing and trying lots of different tastes."

  • "the food was so so - really nothing exciting. the menu listed a chef's tasting. turns out, the chef's menu contains nothing from the regular menu, yet there is no indication addressing this point. during our meal, we saw some food, that we wanted to add to our dinner. that is when we found out about the chef's menu. the shrimp was the only item the chef would give us and it was nothing to write home about. i think if the chef was more accommodating, (or compted us the shrimp) we would have had a better experience, but as it was, it left a bad taste in our mouths. we wanted to leave as soon as possible."

  • "Food at Degustation was very delicious. I would recommend it to someone who is seeking a different restaurant experience and emphasize 'tasting'. I have to say I was a little hungry when we left."

  • "This restaurant is very small, with maybe 20-30 seats. The seating is all at a bar which surrounds the kitchen, so you can watch them prepare all of the dishes. The meal was excellent and reasonably priced. A great place for a date, although I guess it might be difficult if you had more than 2 or 3 people since the seating is in the style of a bar."

  • "We love this place. It's perfect for two diners (doesn't really work for larger numbers, since everyone is seated at a bar), and it's perfect if the two of you are happy to make the food into the central event of the evening. Brilliantly creative tapas-like dishes (don't miss the Brussels Sprouts with Funions!) and a continuous theater of watching the preparations."

  • "We had been to this restaurant several times for their 10 course tasting menu. It was truly excellent. This time, the number of courses had been cut to 7, the portions shrank significantly, and the food was somewhat less adventurous. It was a great disappointment given our earlier experiences."

  • "Did the 7 course Chef's tasting menu and the food was not impressive. The only worthy dish was the dessert, bruleed french toast."

  • "Delicious food, very expensive, tight seating and minute portions. My family went for crepes after an almost $600 meal for four of us…we had the tasting menu. Perhaps the regular tapas were larger portions."

  • "We were recommended this place by a client and had high hopes. We had five dif dishes and only really thought much of the crispy octopus and the corvina. It's flavors were interesting and tasty. All the other were so oily (oily paella, super-fried Brussel sprouts) and the the lamb belly couldn't be finished. I'll blame myself for thinking the lamb belly was going to be similar to a skirt steak cut of beef, but it was pretty much a mostly-fat piece of meat, with a soft-poached egg, drowning in maple syrup. It tasted like a bacon maple syrup soup. Service was fine, but never checked to see how we liked/didn't like our food."

  • "Excellent quality food and preparation. Great place for a couple to share multiple plates. Somewhat limited selection. The concept of the plates is tapas style. Reminds me of La Merenda in Milwaukee, but La Merenda has much greater selection at prices substantially cheaper in a more romantic setting. Sometimes the wait between dishes can be a bit long if the seats are all filled because very little is pre-prepared in the kitchen. The chef has virtually no time to come up for air. Rather than opt for the tasting menu, I recommend that couples share dishes a la carte. This way you can get a wider selection of food, and each dish is different and interesting with fresh ingredients and well-constructed favors."

  • "The online menu posted on Open Table suggests a 10 Course Option, which has now been replaced by a 7 course menu; Unfortunately what is advertised as a 7 course tasting was an under-executed menu. Menu was 3 grilled scallions on a plate, 3 small entrée style courses, a 1oz cheese plate, a pre-dessert (size of a marble) and a 3bite dessert. Granted all the food was properly cooked, seasoned, and executed. However service was unorganized and food was prepared and sitting waiting to have servers locate it in front of the guest at a bar that seats 20. I think the ambiance and draw that this restaurant has is commendable and the potential is high. However my personal experience left much to be desired after $300+ for two."

  • "We stopped in to try out a few dishes and we were happy we did. Some plates did not stand out, the lamb belly was super salty and maple super sweet and the corvina needed more flavor since the riesling froth didn't add much. But they were well executed dishes and the scallop paella and brussels sprouts were by far our favorites. The room can be tight, but it depends on who is seated near you. The dishes are small, enough for a few bites for two, so I think this is a great date spot."
