  • "Easy place to miss. Rather unique setting, 20 seats shaped like a elongated U surrounding the cooking area. We had the 7 course tasting menu, each course was delicious. It was a good show watching the chefs at work"

  • "Outstanding in every way and unique is a gross understatement!"

  • "I'm so glad I stumbled upon this place! We went there the first night in town and it set a very high bar for the rest of the trip! We had the 7-course tasting menu, including: bacon croquettes; charred leek with puttanesca sauce; fried oysters in a red Thai curry sauce (insanely good!); risotto with shrimp; "green ham and eggs" - pork belly with a poached egg - so good; squab with carrots 3 ways, and torijjas. Wow. The service was very strong - knew the menu very well, could help confirm the wine selection given the menu, and moved in and out with no trouble or interruption except to explain the dish. I'd highly recommend this place - it felt like a privilege to be seated at the 20-seat counter watching Chef prepare the dishes."

  • "The food was excellent and all the preparation is done right in front of you. One sees just about each item of food that will be eaten as it is prepared. The wait staff is professional, friendly, and knowledgable. This was a terrific dining experience."

  • "If you are looking for a fabulous dining experience where you can watch the chefs prepare your blend of delicate flavours, this is the place for you. If you are fortunate to score one of the few sears grab it quickly and be sure to go for the tasting menu. I also did wine pairings which were superb. Once you order, sit back and enjoy the ride. Deelish"

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at Degustation. We opted for the tasting menu, and every single plate served to us was phenomenal. Although the servings were a little on the small side, at the end of the meal we were satisfied. The service was wonderful as well."

  • "Went to this restaurant on the recommendation of a friend who is a real foodie. We were not disappointed. The menu was inventive and the food was wonderful. The Crispy Octopus was spectacular--well cooked with a wonderful sauce. The pea soup with scallops had a wonderful flavor. My companion had prawns that he couldn't stop raving about. The restaurant had an unusual set up with a bar around the kitchen like a sushi restaurant which we enjoyed. Because of the layout, you tend to talk to your neighbors and hear what they like about their meals. The wait staff was great with good wine recommendations. It takes a while for each course to come out but its worth it. Prices are extremely reasonable for an excellent NYC restaurant."

  • "We elected not to go with the fixed menu (though we saw each plate brought to others nearby and they looked amazing). We just were in the mood to pick and choose the courses. With the help of our waiter we did not go wrong. Food was incredible. Creative and impressive what the chef's can do with a tiny prep space. We will definitely be back and have told all our friends they must go. Waiter was so fun and attentive. Helped us select an amazing bottle of wine. Chef's were all very friendly too."

  • "We loved the food. Everything was interesting with an amazing flavor. Want to go back."

  • "Food was delicious, but I felt portions were quite small for the prices. It is small plates, but it feels like you must order multiple quantities for more than one person for certain items. I'm glad I experienced it, but do not feel compelled to return. The service was ok, but also not stellar given how highly touted the restaurant is. We waited a bit too long to be serviced for drinks, our check etc. and had to ask for a few things."

  • "Went with my wife, for a late (10pm) dinner and had a terrific experience. The place is intimate and all of the seats are around an open kitchen area - think sushi bar setup, but with the kitchen cooking and serving traditional "modern tapas" style foods. Everything we had was crazy-good, the service was spot-on and very helpful with questions, etc. And the prices, though not cheap, were a great value for what you get. This is definitely going onto our regular rotation."

  • "Diners are seated around the open kitchen, enabling them to see dishes come to life. The food was inventive and delicious. The octopus, pork and prawns were all amazing. I can't wait to go back. "

  • "A one off that is simply over the top... Pea soup, shrimp, squab, pork... All brilliant!"

  • "Like dining at a wine bar with much better food. But somehow the food just doesn't fully make at and the flavors can get messy since things are cooked in front of you on griddles. There is no real entertainment watching the chefs who seem bored and out of sorts. Wine list is interesting, but not actually all that well selected. "

  • "We had reservations for 10 PM after a Saturday show at NYTW around the corner. The food was fine, nothing really stood out. Meager selection of wines by the glass. Service somewhat perfunctory. The bar seating was good; we sat on an end. If we were seated on the long section, it would have been rather cramped. It's normally fun to watch the line cooks but in this case, the food prep also seemed perfunctory. "

  • "Just had my best meal e.v.e.r at Degustation. Outstanding food, and not pretentious. And also very affordable for the category of exceptional meals. "

  • "Firstly and most importantly, the food was absolutely great. Interesting dishes perfectly cooked and meticulously plated. The service was very good. Not especially friendly but efficient. While we loved watching the chefs create the food up close, the disadvantage to the seating setup is that you are elbow to elbow with other diners. Obviously it's the luck of the drawer, but unfortunately on the night we went we had inconsiderate loud diners on either side of us, and both my wife and I grew quite tired of banging elbows in our "airspace"."

  • "I simply looked at Zagat's top rated restaurants in New York City and decided to try Degustation. I think it was rated # 13 or so. The cook's were truly talented and I would suggest this place to my best of friends. We did the tasting menu, which was outstanding. Every course exceeded the one before regarding presentation as well as taste. We added two extra courses that were inserted by the waiter at the proper time. It was a grand experience. All I can say is, Just Go !"

  • "We booked a late dinner; since the place only seats 20, we had to wait a few minutes. Jack, the owner/manager, apologized and graciously brought two flutes of sparkling wine that set the tone for a wonderful experience. Neither of us loved the Spring Pea Soup, but that was the only item we didn't rave about. The highlights were the Torn Bread with Goat's Butter, the most amazing Pork with Turnip, Apple and Potato (an absolute revelation), the Spring Lamb, and the Market Cheese (Vermont Bonne Marche) with Walnuts and whipped Seashore Honey. The Torrija dessert was also excellent, but the cheese and honey would do just fine as an ending to a terrific fully-satisfying-without-feeling-toxic dinner. "

  • "Everything we ordered were delicious but the grilled squid was the best I ever had. We ordered 8 small plates ( 2 people) to share and we were full and satisfied. "

  • "The restaurant is small, with about 20 seats around the bar-like open kitchen. The tasting menu is superb and inexpensive. The chef is a master of creating rich flavor from simple ingredients. I never knew leek and asparagus can taste that good. "

  • "Went here as a surprise for my girlfriend who is an avid foodie. We got the 7 course pre fixe meal and the food was great, specially the Foie Gras and the dessert. The only complaint was the wait time between dishes and the lack of finesse in the service staff. Since the plates are so small, we were getting hungry between plates due to the long wait times (usually more than 15 minutes, yes we timed it after the 3rd dish). Also for a restaurant in zagat top 20, I expected the service staff to at least know how to place the silverware. After one particular fish, the wait staff placed the fork and knife in the middle of the place mat with her having to move it when the next dish arrived. Would recommend but wouldn't go back "

  • "My last night in New York after 2 weeks business and the first night for a a friend from London I was meeting so we went for the 7 course tasting menu which was a delicious culinary journey we didn't want to end. The croquetas and lamb were a couple of highlights. The lovely waitresses sorted a dessert wine which by any standards was close to a 'pint' of sherry and even took the time to write down a couple of bars for post dinner frivolity. As Molly Meldrum used to say 'do yourself a favour'..."

  • "Can only book on line for 2 but called and okayed for 3. Went for chefs picks for 5 course meal. Seemed like small portions but surprisingly filling. Some wait time between courses prepared in front of you. Very limited seating. Call ahead. Excellent well prepared food and nice place to relax, enjoy the wine tasting if you like or just order off menu. Will be back!"

  • "I tried the chef's menu where the food was nicely curated and well prepared. You can even tell about the care the chef put into his food based on the balance of flavours from dish to dish, along with the wine pairings. The ambience and the friendliness of the staff as well as their attentiveness really contributed to the overall experience. Definitely would recommend this place for dinner!"

  • "Degustation is a foodie term referring to the tasting of various foods and the appreciation/joy that comes with the experience. The restaurant lives up to the name and the definition. The wine list is limited but perfectly paired and fairly priced. The menu is awesome. While we chose to enjoy only five dishes, we would recommend that you arrive ravenous and do the seven course tasting. Phenomenal displays. The intimacy of the space enhances the joy of watching the chefs demonstrate their skills with everything from octopus to foam. Don't miss this treasure in the lower Village."

  • "This was our first visit to the restaurant that we picked based on the ratings on the web and we were a bit disappointed. Although the food quality was good, the quantities of servings were very small, choices were limited and price was very high. I have been to other tapas/fusion food places in the city that offer much better value for the money with great ambiance and service. "

  • "All I can say is, WOW! we absolutely LOVED everything we ordered. The service was perfect. We had a tight schedule, with theatre tickets and they were very accommodating. Be forewarned, it is a very small place with elbow to elbow seating, but well worth it!"

  • "I wanted to give this restaurant a five star rating because the food really was amazing. But the initial greeting (could not find our confirmed reservation) and later treatment was less than friendly by the hostess/server. We did the chef tasting menu & wine pairing. A little pricey, but worth it! 7 courses of surprising flavors. Only the opener of hamachi was a bit bland. Arctic char in flavorful froth - yum. Pork belly - double yum. Just the right amount of food too. If they can be more consistently welcoming/friendly I think the experience would be better. One service staff from Peru made up for it. "

  • "Amazing culinary experience watching an artist do his work. The unique seating around the kitchen afforded us the opportunity to watch them creatively prepare each dish using a variety of unique ingredients. It was amazing how the chef and his assistant placed each piece of food and garnishes on the plate just like an artist looks at their palate and decides where the next stroke goes. The food and wine were delicious. The entire staff were very attentive and the meal was spaced out perfectly. It was a small and intimate setting and would highly recommend Degustation."

  • "Food was impeccable. This place is undoubtedly a hidden gem- people at a bar next store didn't even know of it. There's only a handful of seats at a bar facing an open kitchen- no private tables. A little bit of a tight squeeze with other guests but well worth it. I took the future hubby there for his birthday and he was impressed with my find. We did the chefs tasting which is shown as 10 courses online but is actually 7. (Thankfully, you would not need more.) we did do the wine pairing although we never do- it was the right way to go about it. The staff was well educated on each course and it's relevance to the wine. From someone who's been to the Jean Georges of NY, I prefer a seat at this restaurant any day! Arrive on time!!"

  • "One of the best dining experiences we have ever had. Food was excellent, atmosphere was intimate, and prices were more than reasonable. Was basically like sitting at a chefs table. It was amazing watching them prepare and take questions form the diners. Food was creative and delicious. None of the courses disappointed. Can't wait to go back."

  • "We dined at Degustation for the first time on a Sunday night. We made an early reservation and were able to get the corner seats at this intimate establishment. This afforded us the chance to watch the chef's hard at work preparing some of the most delicious small plates. The Chef's pairing menu is definitely the way to go. After 7 plates and dessert I was very satiated. Each course was unique but delicious. I would highly recommend this neighborhood hot spot that you could easily walk past and not even realize it was there. "

  • "My wife and I have had the good fortune of eating at a lot of good restaurants around the world and we both agreed that our meal at Marc Forgione was at the top of our list. Every dish that we ordered was its own unique and delicious experience. The tuna kampachi was the stand-out (this is a MUST-EAT) The service was fantastic! The passion/excitement and knowledge from our waitress actually augmented the impact of each dish right up until the end. The night of wonderful surprises/delights was topped off with a visit from Marc himself at our table - such a nice guy. We would wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant."

  • "The name is a bit of a misnomer. It is not French... at all. Nothing is French about it. That being said, the food is fantastic. The octopus was served black... as in burnt. We were told this is how they serve it. Everything else was excellent. The décor is somewhere between a basement bar to a ski country kitchen. You eat at the chef's counter in front of the chef and cooks. None of whom seemed to be thrilled with working with one another. There was a weird vibe between them. The servers were outstanding. Overall... excellent."

  • "What a delightfully delicious find. I had no idea what to expect; did not expect such a tiny, eclectic place. We were fortunate to sit right in front of the chef in this counter only elegant establishment. Watching the chef and assistants was magical. The flavors set this restaurant apart from any other. Salt-roasted sun chokes were sublime, roasted to the perfect degree of doneness. A roasted parsnip - Yumm! Arctic char was beautifully prepared with exquisite flavors. My only minor complaint - the servers were not totally familiar with the food. It appeared they had not tasted it themselves - they should. The sommelier, on the other hand was a master at his cellar and we were the beneficiaries of his knowledge. Can't wait to go back!"
