Diner Reviews
  • "Went for dinner prior to going to a show. They were very attentive to make sure we got out on time. The waiter was very courteous and chatted with us about Daniel Boulud's different restaurants. For dinner, my wife and daughter started with the gazpacho soup, properly chilled and excellent flavor. They shared a crab/pasta dish, very tasty. I had the market salad which had a lovely flavorful dressing and then had the coq au vin. It was a proper sized portion, not too big like some places give you, so the chicken was evenly cooked and not dried out. The sauce was superb. My son-in-law had the duck which he said was terrific. We had one dessert for the four of us which was artfully presented and tasty. All in all, a great experience!"

  • "My friend and I enjoyed a pre-theater lunch here. What made it so enjoyable, in addition to the food, was that the service was attentive & professional. Having eaten at the restaurant before, we also loved the new decor, which gave a more modern, fresh, clean look."

  • "I love this restaurant it's one of my absolute favorites, as someone who has a degree in culinary arts, this place does everything amazingly. The servers were very friendly, courteous and extremely knowledgeable about all the menu items and drinks. I enjoyed my dinner, and the whole experience was beyond my expectations, I plan on returning to eat here several more times. I highly recommend this place to anyone the menu is accommodating to all tastes."

  • "I had previously been to the location in Singapore which is much larger and prettier. The NYC space is a bit cramped but I am thrilled that they are here. The menu is somewhat limited but the offerings are creative and well prepared. The chef was able to tweek my burger just a bit to my liking and I have to say it is among the best I have eaten in my life. The service was attentive and the wine specialist was extremely personable and knowledgeable. We enjoyed the food very much and would happily return."

  • "The food was fantastic!!! Best burger and ravioli special we have ever tasted. Our waiter and bus person were very knowledgeable, attentive and efficient. A great place for a date or anniversary. The one experience that was way below par were the hostesses - very bored, uninterested and unprofessional. We were glad we stuck around though as our subsequent experience was sublime."

  • "3 women looking for a nice place prior to the 7 pm curtain of Beautiful: The Carol King Musical. This was the perfect place to meet (virtually around the corner from the theatre), but more importantly, the food was beautifully presented and we didn't feel rushed although we only had an hour. We each had a entree, shared a dessert, and a class of wine ( plus a small amuse, excellent bread, and a plate of small desserts) and felt well fed and relaxed when we left. Yes, it's pricey but everything was perfect. I would definitely recommend for a pre-theatre meal and hope to find myself back there again."

  • "We went for a pre theatre dinner....food was spectacular! I had a wonderful tomato/cumber/cheese salad special...glorious...the Prawn/Aparagus risotto was to die for....and the bread is hot and delicious...service was great...overall a a fabulous choice!"

  • "I was really looking forward to dining at this restaurant. Although my husband was happy with the sea bass entree, I was disappointed in the duck which was overly salty and greasy. It left an unpleasant taste on my palate. The chocolate dessert was yummy. Service was good but, for the price and the experience, I think I will go elsewhere to dine next time we are in NYC."

  • "I have had lunch with friends here many times before, but this time was disappointing. We were seated at the table next to the service area in the back of the restaurant, when the place was only half full. I know, we should have asked to be moved, but my guest had arrived first so it would have been awkward. All the tables around us remained empty. Only traffic was the waiters buzzing about right next to us, making conversation difficult. It felt that we were given that remote table to try to hide us, two mature women, from the younger business crowd. The grilled chicken salad entree was ok and the blueberry dessert was delicious."

  • "The food was superb but the service was slow, basic and unattentive (and restaurant wasn't full)."

  • "Food is carefully prepared. Portions are quite small, especially for the price. Wait staff is fairly good, but sitting near the kitchen entrance felt like Grand Central Station"

  • "although making the reservation 4 weeks ahead, we got the badest table in the restaurant. Very unfriendly staff, the food was "mediocre".Overpriced. Ambiente and food was before the renovation much better."
    Dined on 8/15/2014
  • "As above, the staff were great but the food disappointing - how can fois gras be tasteless? Lobster salad was tasteless wet lobster with tasteless greens and tasteless dressing! Pasta with crab tasted like over cooked pasta and crab sticks."

  • "My husband and I have been to one other of Mr. Boulud's restaurants and that was Boulud Sud - which was absolutely wonderful!! Mr. Boulud is obviously a perfectionist and acutely detail oriented and it shows, from the moment you enter the restaurant, to the cocktail ordered at the bar and to the service at the table and finally, but not least, the presentation and quality of the food. The guest is king (or queen) here and if an order needs to be adjusted to suit the diner's taste, it is done without fuss! It was a wonderful evening that we are still talking about. We look forward to our next dining experience at a Boulud restaurant!!"

  • "I always have a meal at DB Bistro Moderne when we visit NYC and the food and service have always been exceptional. This visit was no exception. In fact, I would have rated even higher if there were more stars on the scale. The makeover is wonderful, giving an even more modern look. I have usually ordered a version of the famous DB Burger but this time I was rewarded by venturing out in the updated menu. The pate terrine was phenomenal and veal superb. My wife had the the squash blossoms filled with lump crab and seasoned with truffle. What an amazing flavor profile. We have had these in Italy and in the US but these were by far the best. The special sweet treat for our anniversary was greatly appreciated. Service was flawless."

  • "In an area dominated by steakhouses, it's refreshing to find Daniel Boulud's take on French bistro dining. As always at his restaurants, both service and food were top-notch. The fava bean crostini was outstanding, and the blueberry sorbet accompanying the cornmeal financier was a revelation. I'm definitely going to buy an ice cream maker so I can attempt to reproduce it! Try this restaurant after shopping on Fifth Avenue or following a visit to the NY Public Library, Bryant Park, or Rockefeller Center. Also very convenient to the theater district."

  • "Visited during restaurant week. The selection was minimal but everything was very good. We had a 1:30pm reservation and got seated immediately. We were not rushed and had a very nice dining experience."

  • "We went here for our first time as part of the restaurant week menu. We've been meaning to try some Daniel Boulad restaurants and we picked this one. The food was good, highlights were the pork duo and the cornmeal financier. We read good reveals on the olive oil poached cod, but it didn't meet our expectations. The fish was perfectly cooked, but everything tasted oily and left us desiring the saltiness of the cod. The portions were very small, which made us wonder if it was because of the restaurant week pricing. Lots of suits and families. We will probably be back to try the burger, but we'll probably sit at the bar."

  • "I always take advantage of Restaurant Week in NYC to check out pricier places I can't afford on a regular basis. My experience in doing so has varied widely. Some restaurants take it seriously and provide normal menu items (and portions) and some really skimp. db Bistro did NOT skimp. The meal was delicious. First we were given an amuse bouche of tiny saffron arancini with basil cream (DELICIOUS). And then came a varied and generous bread basket including pretzel roll bread sticks (!). For my meal I chose kale salad with radishes and ricotta salata (GENEROUS portion - I couldn't finish). Olive oil poached cod with tempura zucchini flower _YUM and the cheese plate for dessert. We had great wine. The service and ambiance were impeccable!"

  • "i had the famed db burger and, i hate to say it, (really. i'm not trying to be intentionally contrarian) it doesn't hold a candle to so many other burgers in this burger-centric city. that said....all the food and service was good, and it's a perfect business environment (but they need to add some kind of sound damping technology)."

  • "Restaurant week lunch: The drinks were great, the service was good, the room is great. I just wish the portions were larger . I have been to Bouloud Sud and Bar Bouloud and the portions were larger. Some of my friends left hungry. What there was tasted good- great flavors and quality. I would go back but order from the regular menu."

  • "Dining during Restaurant Week, while providing great value, does not always result in receiving the best results of the kitchen. The food was okay but not memorable. The tables are tight (but this is NYC) and the service a bit harried, but overall it was a good experience."

  • "Restaurant Week: Basic appetizer of kale salad, lackluster cod (no sauce, no flavor, just a poached piece of fish) and 2 small slices of cheese for dessert. Luckily the service and ambience were quite good. Save your money and go elsewhere."

  • "Definitely one of the best meals in NYC. Perfect post-work dinner location in midtown on a quiet street away from tourists. The dishes were incredible, a hidden gem for NYC foodies, bold and innovative - like the tandoori pasta - without being too over the top. The foie gras terrine and duck confit were wonderful. The menu seems to change often so alot of variety and opportunity to keep coming back (which we will). We appreciated the emphasis on the market ingredients and loved the chance to interact with the Executive Chef, Brian Loiacono, who has a great personality and is genuinely interested in the feedback and response to the food of dining guests. Thanks for a great meal DB Bistro -"

  • "Went for Restaurant Week and they created a lovely three-course meal for only $38. Will definitely go back. A little noisy for some."

  • "I was one of a party of four who had a pre-theater dinner at db Bistro Moderne. The menu offered something enticing for every member of our group--one who is environmentally conscious, one who is a "picky" eater, and two who just wanted something delightful! We were all pleased with the diverse menu, lovely presentation, and EXCEPTIONAL service. The portions are small but adequate, and we left the restaurant feeling satisfied in every way. Finally, it is worth noting that this restaurant is exceptionally close to the Theater District."

  • "I chose this place for the convenient location and the Daniel Boulud affiliation. I wasn't expecting to be wildly impressed at breakfast but I certainly wasn't expecting to be this disappointed. Coffee was fine, service was responsive when I asked for things but otherwse kinda meh, meal was just OK. Eggs were a bit cold, soggy bacon (requested crisp), lackluster single slice of toast, good potatoes! Food took longer than it should have or was sitting in the window too long. Though the ambience was pleasant, especially for my business meeting, this just wasn't worth the money. A good diner would have done better."

  • "Another restaurant in the Daniel Boulud empire. Very good standard as usual. Less expensive than the others but the usual Boulud flair and small portions. Modern chic sandwiched bewteen so so hotels and the famed overpriced Algonquin."

  • "There were very few customers at the off hour of 9 in the morning - after the breakfast rush and before lunch. We waited 25 minutes for our breakfast order of eggs to be served. Our server had disappeared from the time he took our order. When after 20 minutes of sitting with no coffee, no juice and no service we asked a passing busboy for our food, his shoulder shrug spoke volumes about the importance of the customer - zero. Stay away."
