Diner Reviews
  • "went there after the theatre at 10:15pm and were delighted with the excellent wine list and great French styled food. I could have selected about 15 wines that represented the Napa Valley, France, Italy and more. The coq au vin was to die for. Highly recommend this restaurant for it's superb ambience."

  • "I always wanted to try the hamburger. It was very good. The short ribs inside were very tender and I loved the fois gras. The steak tartare was also delicious. The onion and cheese flatbread was also good. The wine was great. The coq au vin and duck confit were also ordered and everyone enjoyed their meal. Even though I usually don't like orange flavored things, the dessert with the orange marshmallows was delicious I cannot speak for the bar scene because we were there for an early dinner following a show."

  • "Daniel Boulud is one of my favorite chefs...so I had no hesitation trying db Bistro. We went for a pre theater dinner and were not disappointed. All the food that came was delicious. From the appetizer to dessert. Not a touristy spot like most Times Sq places. Food was well above average but not as stellar as some of his other spots. But saying that is still a huge complement, since other Daniel spots are among the best ever. I would definitely recommend the Pre-Fix menu for a wonderful Pre Theater dinner."

  • "We had a wonderful time at db Bistro moderne! The food and wine were delicious - everything is so beautifully done - and the service was outstanding. We love coming here when we are in New York!"

  • "Food was stunning and delicious. Excellent service. Great for pre- theater, too. A gem on 44th Street. Five stars!"

  • "Although we had made a reservation a week in advance, we were seated by the front door, witness to all comings and goings. Our unshaven waiter looked and acted like he had just rolled out of bed. He offered the minimum. That aside, the food was excellent for three out of four of us. The fourth got a bland pasta dish. The wine list seemed extremely priced. We made it to our show without a problem. Yes, there was a price fixe menu that was reasonably priced. We wanted to try other things, as it was our first visit. No complaints about the food, but the rest of the experience offered no reason for returning."

  • "So few good restaurants in the theater district. Found this on open table, familiar with other Daniel Boulud restaurants, so was anxious to try it. Did the prefix, excellent choices, delicious from start to finish! Service was attentive, not intrusive. Really great experience, will definitely return."

  • "Took 2 colleagues from Tokyo and this was their first visit to NYC. They enjoyed the food, I would have as well if not for the lack of proper service."

  • "I had dinner with a friend this past weekend. I was a disappointed with my dinner & my friend remarked that the food was just average. The service, on the other hand, was outstanding. Our waiter & all the other wait staff were gracious & excellent. The little freebies were a very nice touch. Because this is a Daniel Boulard restaurant, I expected more. My hanger steak was OK but the polenta that came with the dish had no flavor at all. Also $10.00 for asparagus (with very few tips) was overpriced. My friend had the pasta & shrimp. The pasta was perfectly cooked al dente & the sauce was very good with a hint of orange but the shrimp was overcooked & rubbery. Not impressed with this restauant and probably will not go back."

  • "Such a chic and relaxed bistro. We were delighted by the staff, the trout almandine and the madelines."

  • "Food was very good . So was the service. Prices not bad considering location and name. Will go again"

  • "Had a great dining experience At first we were not happy about sitting in the front which was quite noisy. We asked to be moved, at first they could not, when we told them we had an 8pm show, they said they could. We opted to stay put,and were very glad we did. The waiter and his staff were excellent, and gracious. We sat at 5:45, and were not rushed in any way. Food was outstanding, tuna tartare, shrimp pasta in a tomato, basil and lemon sauce was perfect with al dente pasta, veal angolotti were wonderful, the veal stock underneath was hearty but delicate. dessert was a winner. A dark chocolate shell, chocolate inside, surrounded by a delicate airy whipped coffee cream and orange marshmallows accented with coffee crumbs."

  • "Great spot close to Times Square & theater district. Peaceful, small but diverse menu, great food, reasonable prices, gracious staff."

  • "Smack in the middle of the theatre district, this restaurant is a good pre or post theatre dining option. It is attractive, convenient, with extremely pleasant waiters. Unfortunately the food, at least mine, was only so- so. Nothing wrong with it, very attractively presented, but nothing memorable either. I would definitely try it again, however."

  • "The food was excellent! The wait staff very attentive. They knew we were seeing a show so they made sure we were out on time. Highly recommend!!"

  • "THis restaurant convenient to theater locations on the east side was excellent for what we wanted. THe food was quite good especially the skirt steak that my wife had and the rosti potatoes that came along with my chicken. It appeared that the prix fixed dinner specials would have been excellent choices but we were in the mood for other things. That Charcuterie Plate was outstanding but a little light on cornichons. The only two things that we think could have enhanced the evening were that tables were to close together and the noise level was way too high. Recommend for pre theatre anytime."

  • "Hostess tried to sit my wife (who walked in before me) at table next to waiter station on the lower level. She was seated in the upper level after objection. Lobster appetizer delicious with plenty of lobster-greens bitter, fried artichokes overcooked and a few tiny pieces of hearts of palm. Extra dressing to mask bitterness. Melon appetizer w/ham excellent-portion could have been larger. Pom frites delicious. Hanger steak very good, except for a few overcooked ends. The substituted vegetable, asparagus, were served with one piece of the tip and the rest ends. Pork Belly with risotto was very good, but once again three small pieces was small for an entre order. The experience should have been better for $140 before the tip."

  • "Delicious food, perfect for before or after dinner, helpful and well trained staff, can't wait to go back -- theater or no theater!!"

  • "We had an excellent dinner prior to theatre. We told the hostess and waiter when our curtain was and they made sure that we were out on time. Coq Au Vin was exceptional. Everything that we ordered was well prepared and presented. The wait staff was very attentive. Deserts were presented very nicely and tasted great. Herbal ice tea was very good and it was hard to believe that there was no sweetener in it."

  • "This was the perfect pre-theater dinner. The Prix-Fixe offered a good cross section. We were blown away with the amazing desserts. The service was accomodating and impecable."

  • "My son and I visited DB Bistro moderne Monday evening for dinner and were both very happy with the decision. The food was excellent (fresh and cooked perfectly) the ambiance was good and the service perfectly balanced. My main course was a swordfish steak wrapped in bacon and was excellent. The fish was cooked perfectly and the portion generous. I will definitely return."

  • "Always reliable. Food at a high quality. Typical New York crowded with tables ans some very noisy tables. Service can get slow."
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "Friendly, goes the extra step to be helpful. Try their duck delicious and if you don't mind the calories their potato fries are outstanding. Been there many times before and after the theatre."

  • "Tried 3 course prix fixe. Tasted pate, cod, and raspberry tart with wine pairing. Cod was moist and seasoned appropriately. However, overall, lower than expectation."

  • "Amazing service! Had the June feature - Burger and Bubbles special- and the burger was life changing! Will be coming back for that burger again! Service was great. Felt like a regular."

  • "The food here was not as good as I had hoped it would be. I started with a tuna tartare that was fantastic. However, my next course, Trout Amandine was a disappointment. The fish was overcooked and slightly dry as well as being oversalted. There were two pieces of fish. One was very salty and the other was not over salty so I wondered if the cook had just salted one piece twice. The service was friendly and excellent although when we got there the restaurant was half empty and they still tried to put us next to a service station where the wait staff prepared water. Extremely expensive for the quality of the food. I was not surprised at the price. Just surprised that the food wasn't worth it."

  • "Good, not great food, seemed a little prefab in preparation, food appeared a little too fast. Service was mediocre at best but cocktails were excellent. Would give it another try but not rush back."

  • "Great food and service but disappointed with the spacing between tables. Not romantic in any way."

  • "Normally db is one of the best places to go in the theater district. This was not one of those times. First, they ran out of burgers (the whole reason we were there), then the waiter talked us into ordering the fried chicken special, which was neither special (plain bread crumbs?)--relied 100% on side sauces (that's cheating), and seriously overpriced. Maybe going post-theater mid-week wasn't the best idea? Loses one star in every category on this visit, but I'll be back to have the burger again at some point."

  • "I went with my team for a luncheon with a vendor this week. The food was superb & the service was excellent. The staff was very accommodating with our numerous requests"

  • "The $48 pre theater appetizer, entre, and desert is a real find. Presentation and service is excellent. Will dine here again"

  • "It was so good we are going back to make it the entire evening activity. Unique and yummy food - especially the signature burger. Great wine choices."

  • "What happened to a once enjoyable restaurant? In the hour and a half that we suffered through the most arrogant wait staff ever encountered at a restaurant , we remarked that not one person smiled. Indeed, it appeared the staff seemed to hate their jobs. In addition , all of us noticed that our drinks and wine were watered down. Daniel Boulud had best check what is happening at his bistro."

  • "We went in Father's Day. There was no special menu. The quality of food was not good. My fruit plate was soggy and didn't look or taste good. My mother had the durade which she liked. The kids pasta was too al dente. Overall not a good day at DB."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "This is a situation where consistency is so welcomed! Each time that I've enjoyed lunch at db Bistro, the service has been impeccable and the food beautifully presented and predictably scrumptious."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "The four of us had anticipated an interesting evening with energetic ambiance and eclectic ingredients. Instead it was one of greasy fancy burgers with no cheese for the burgers (and none available), no special ingredient requests because "everything is made ahead" and service so slow we could have cooked it ourselves. First drinks took 18 minutes to arrive, for instance. Plus it was so loud we had to shout across our narrow booth. Skip this place."
    Dined on 6/12/2014
  • "Very disappointed. Salmon was overcooked and dry in spite of having specifically ordered undercooked, hanger steak was tough, coq au vin mediocre. I had very high expectations and our party was underwhelmed by our dinners. Would not repeat the experience."

  • "I was looking for a last minute reservation, and found Bistro moderne close by. Joined up with a friend, had to wait at the bar, but seats available. Drink prices too high, but food was worth the wait. Wish we had had more time!"
