Diner Reviews
  • "The food was very good and well presented, but the food arrived before the drinks which just shouldn't happen! The food is underwhelmed by a pretty sterile environment; just not that interesting. Location is convenient for pre-theater, but off the beaten path enough to be a pleasant walk."

  • "db Bistro Moderne continues to perform magic with their luscious menu selections. Always charming and elegant, the staff go to the nth degree to make you feel at home. The menu and specials created for the day match the season and hit just the right note every time. Never rushed, always timely..."

  • "Went Easter and place was busy. Had to wait couple minutes for table despite reservation. Food service didn't take long. Portions not too big which may be considered small by people with big appetites. Will go again to try other dishes."

  • "Total package - food prep and presentation, service excellent, wine recommendation was spot on and nicely chilled. Always a delight to dine at Monsieur Boulod's restaurants."

  • "Couldn't get reservation at Daniel but we managed to reserve here for lunch. Now, I really want to experience Daniel. Everything we had was excellent. Wife had dish called "A Taste of Spring". A mélange of creative selections for vegetarians. I had Coq au vin... a classic. Dessert was a very creatively prepared apple tart for me, and a chocolate marshmallow dish for the wife. Both works of culinary art and flavor. Expensive, but worth the experience. Service was casual. Attentive without being stuffy. Whether or not you're a foodie, you'll be comfortable. "

  • "When we arrived we were told there was a private event in the main dining room and escorted to a table the bar, so that was irritating from the start. I ordered the supposedly "house special" coq au vin, which was just terrible. It was served in a heavy, brown salty sauce with no discernible wine in it, and the chicken was scrawny and tough, when it should have been falling off the bone. The butter lettuce salad was served with hunks of proscuitto -- what was up with that? Very weird addition to an otherwise fine salad. If you're going to charge such top dollar, you really need to serve food that's worth it."

  • "Great and quick service. Wonderful atmosphere and of course outstanding food! Next time we head to New York we will definitely be back, and we are excited to try his other restaurants in NYC. We will be recommending this place to all our friends who enjoy great French cuisine. "

  • "A great experience: superb service, we had a last minute 2-person addition to our group and the DB staff accommodated us quickly and with zero fuss. The space is beautiful, and the location perfect for the theatre district. Very good food; the menu had something for all of us (a gastronome, 2 vegetarians and a 10-yr old, so no mean feat!) Very reasonable. We are extremely well in a gorgeous dining room with world class service and didn't break the bank. Bravo DBM!!"

  • "Food was poor to okay. The Italian Pork Bun was okay, the surf and turf tacos were poor. The 'surf' was halibut that had a very strong taste-not like halibut at all. Our waitress never checked to see if our food was okay, never offered dessert and seemed apathetic. The place was full but it is tiny and there was more than sufficient staff. Hard to believe this place is hard to get into...lots of better choices in a 3-block radius."

  • "Our reservation was at nine and we were not seated til 20 minutes later. The menu is limited; the portions are tiny. We were four people ordering four different courses. None of us felt that our selections were particularly good, especially given the price. There was a private party that had taken over most of the restaurant so the lines for the two bathrooms were endless. There was no toilet paper in one of the two."

  • "My family and I went to db Moderne for a pre-theater dinner and the food was delicious. We each had different things (coq a vin, pasta, herb chicken, and salmon) and we were all mopping up our plates trying to get the last little bit. Loved the little munchies at the beginning and ending of the meal. I was also quite surprised at how reasonably priced it was for NYC. Will definitely go again. "

  • "Nice place to meet friends, talk and have a quiet dinner. The back room is better. Near Broadway and the theaters. But they gave us the check without being asked! We could have wanted sometihng more!"

  • "Best burger. Best risotto. Best coq au vin. Great wine list and the service was excellent. Simply the best. "

  • "The main courses we had were unremarkable. My wife had chicken that was no more than a pan fried cutlet, deglazed with rosemary . My duck confit was adequate. The hotel we stayed at talked this place up like it was extraordinary. "

  • "I don't typically leave reviews, but feel compelled to do so here because of the negative experience. Have been a Boulud loyalist years but this was first time at bistro. We chose DB Bistro for pre-theater matinee; however despite the hour and half allotted for brunch, it was barely enough time. Waiter was completely inattentive and had attitude when we politely reminded him about our show tickets. Food was served served luke-warm once it finally arrived. Didn't bother sending it back because we would've been late for the show. Not the DB experience you come to expect from his other restaurants. The first time I've left a meal at Boulud restaurant feeling like it was disappointing, mediocre and overpriced."

  • "From the moment we walked into Daniel DB bistro my party was treated with class and respect. The menu had something for everyone. I began with an appetizer of asparagus with poached egg, Frissee,Taragon and all the flavored on this plate blended see lesson and the Asparagus was cooked perfectly as to meld with the textures of the plate. Two of my dining partners had r my main course I had salmon aux morales and the salmon was cooked to perfection and this was paired with the morels and white asparagus harmoniously"

  • "Three of us had a wonderful meal after seeing a show. Our reservation was at 10:45, and we enjoyed delicious appetizers (spring plate), and wonderful meals of hangar steak, steak tartare, and coq au vin. Despite the late hour, we ate it all! The staff was friendly and welcoming. I look forward to returning the next time I am in New York."

  • "We had an excellent evening at the bistro! True to France, tables are close and the noise level can get high, but that did not deter from our visit. Service was outstanding from the moment we arrived. Wine and meal items were well timed. Wait staff was very helpful in answering questions and the food lived up to Daniel standards. Planning to return on our next visit."

  • "We chose db Bistro because it was close to the theater district and had easy access for an elderly friend with limited eye sight and difficulty walking. When we first arrived it seemed ideal, as it was early and the crowds had not yet arrived. However, as the restaurant filled we all had great difficulty in maintaining a conversation, such was the noise level. No doubt there are many who thrive in this type of atmosphere, and the food as well as the service were excellent. It's difficult to find any place to dine where the noise is not a negative factor, but this was over the top- probably due to it's popularity. It was totally booked at lunch."

  • "It's great to find a really good restaurant close to the Theater District. I highly recommend it. Loved the amuse bouche and the generous wine pours."

  • "I met my niece here for brunch on Sunday. At 11am we were the only people in the restaurant, so service was pretty amazing. It slowed down as the lunch crowd rolled in. I ordered the poached eggs and my daughter had a steak. I might be a little critical but I cannot stand how French restaurants in the city undercook their poached eggs so that the whites are still watery. I poach eggs all the time at home and I know they are difficult, but I just expect better in NYC. Plus, i ordered my daughter's steak medium and it was blue in the middle, so she could only eat 1/3 of it (very frustrating). I was also disappointed that they had no salt on the table. I do not mind no salt, but you have to perfectly season! Charcuterie & omelet = delicious!"

  • "Near the Theater District intimate Bistro is friendly and inviting. Their concise menu offers many culinary choices all to please the customer and at reasonable prices! The wine list is filled with good choices. We have found the staff to be professional, willing to offer advice on choices; and very attentive to their customers needs. A good choice for a pre-theater dinner or anytime you want good food. Great place to meet up after work for a quick drink and small "bites". We have returned quite a few times!"

  • "The service was excellent and the food was delicous. Our waiter was very helpful and attentive. This comment should not defer you from going there but I truly believe the cocktail was a bit too high. $17 for a glass of wine is a bit high. Usually I can drink wine for $13-14 a glass but other than that it was a wonderful experience."

  • "Salmon was delicious as was the octopus. Good, affordable wine. Friendly waiters. Close to theatres. Best for special occasions since the cost matches the high quality. ."

  • "My father and I had lunch/brunch before seeing a Saturday matinee. The service was good, thank you Brian, the food was very good. Our only complaint was that my poached egg was overcooked and the wine pours were VERY stingy."

  • "First time there since the renovation and we loved the changes. We had friends in from out of town pre theater and loved the restaurant. My husband totally indulged and had the burger stuffed with short ribs! Outstanding!"

  • "Just what we were looking for. Group of 6 on NYC trip to experience the best in the world - museums, theatre, food. I had the house specialty - coq au vin, excellent sauce, others had the "burger" which is anything but a simple burger, also excellent. They found something for our gluten-free friend and she said it was the best meat she had eaten in her life. One had the papardelle, which I tried some and it was outstanding. We had a cozy table, great servers, great advice from the sommelier. The maitre'd was kind enough to respond to my French. Couldn't have been better."

  • "This is the third time we have been to the Bistro and, frankly, we will look further next time. We bring our children to NYC each year for a week-end of good food, arts and Broadway and we have enjoyed DB Bistro Moderne in the past. My dish was barely edible (and it was a special for the night) and the rest of the menu was hardly worth the trouble. The wine steward was very knowledgeable and the wine he recommended was outstanding. That was the high point."

  • "Very welcoming & personable service. Everything was delicious except for my Sea Bass main course. While the pea puree was delicious, the fish itself lacked flavor. Would still return."

  • "Greeted by two not so friendly hostesses, no smile, didn't want to take our jacket nor umbrella until I told them I wanted to check in my coat. Our reservation was at 6pm, we were seated right away. Fairly busy at that time, 95% full. Waitress came, she was super nice and friendly compare to the hostesses who sat us down. Appetizers - we had the Maine Lobster with fried artichokes, grapefruit, hearts of palm, lobster cooked perfectly. Soup - we had the sun tomato artichoke soup. I do not eat beef, the waitress recommended the salmon with morel mushrooms, white asparagus with home made gnocchi. It was absolutely delicious! My husband had the pork belly risotto, it was a bit salty but it was ok."

  • "We so enjoyed our 10th wedding anniversary dinner at db modern. They couldn't have been more attentive or service oriented. The food and the pace of service was perfect for our evening. Many unusual options made for wonderful discussion at te table and the California Chardonnay recommended was perfect for our fish."

  • "the Cuisine du Marche menu is a excellent combination of French cooking techniques applied to fresh products. All dishes we tried were unusual in concept and delicious. The waiter paid close attention to my wife's food allergies, and, where necessary, the chef made subtle changes in a dish to meet her needs without sacrificing the quality of the product. Excellent wine list, very good selection by the glass."
