A word from David Burke's Primehouse in the James Hotel
The first chef to own his own bull, Chef David Burke's commitment to quality is evident in the USDA prime grade, hand-selected beef served in David Burke's Primehouse. The restaurant dry-ages its meats in a Himalayan salt-tiled aging room on premise. The result is perfectly marble-ized, tender beef with a rich depth of flavor. Tours of this unique facility can be arranged upon reservation.

The best steak in Chicago lived up to its name. But just as important, the server was super sensitive to the fact that I was spending quality time w friends I hadn't seen in 20 years. He was unobstrusive, helpful, and gave us a lot of space. We never felt rushed or hurried. When you put great food and great service together you have a winner! Thank you, DB Primehouse

I like burgers but this one missed the mark with sauteed spinach as a topping. The beef is not seasoned (on purpose), the bun is OK, and the truffle fries are rich. A side of asparagus was seasoned OK. Mashed potatoes were excellent and the popovers served are fantastic.

I was disappointed with the steak. It come cool and over cooked. I had to asked the server to reheat the steak. This of course over cooked it more. They didn't even apologize and suggested this was the way it is suppose to come. The party next to us was also disappointed.

This was our groups 4-5th time dining Burkes Prime, so we all knew what we wanted. As usual the table side Ceaser Salad, which can't be compared to that imitation premade Ceaser served in most restaurants, was fantastic. Moving on to the main course, steaks and chops... one of our group ordered the lamb chops, which he allowed each of us a taste, it was fabulous. Then came the bone in Kansas City strip for the rest and it was downhill from there. Never had any of 3 us that ordered these steaks had one sooo over cooked (well done, we ordered medium). Staff promptly replaced them but those that came just weren't that good. At $61 a steak I have come to expect perfection in all aspects of the steak. U ,

Steaks were HEAViLY charred and totally raw in the middle when asked for medium. Bearnaise sauce was over cooked to the point of having lots of scrambled eggs and no flavor. Appetizers were boiled in oil rather than fried which made them extremely greasy and unpalatable. Most disappointing g meal I can remember at any restaurant in a long time. Understaffed so the server never checked on us or our meals. Horrible experience

We had high expectations due to the promoted rating as Chicago's best steak/steakhouse. The pricing is also very high, at least as much as better alternatives such as The Palm or Capital Grille. The atmosphere was more hotel than fine dining. Our waitress, though very friendly was not as attentive as finer establishments. The biggest disappointment were the steaks. Nowhere near the quality expected for $70/per steak price tag. Better than Outback, sure. But next time my wife and I are out to spend $200 on dinner we'll go somewhere else.

Wonderful dinner in September. Each course was delicious and the wine pairings were fabulous. Experienced waiter whetted our appetite with dirty martinis and things just kept getting better. Chef graciously substituted gluten free offerings to accommodate our dietary needs. Bacon skewers with maple syrup snapped us to attention. Arugula over a goat cheese based dressing was surpringly good. The steak was done perfectly -- good char, lovely pink interior, and full-flavored. Very casual ambience -- not a romantic dining spot and maybe not even a formal business dinner spot. Just good fun and fantastic food and wine!

My wife and I celebrated our anniversary here. My wife had the Filet Mignon which was great and but we both especially enjoyed the rib eye. For sides we had the asparagus, creamy spinach and basil potatoes (I'd try a different starch). All in all it's a fantastic place to celebrate a special occasion and the service is 2nd to none. If you want a great pre-dinner drink I'd go for the 42nd Ward.

  • WORST STEAKHOUSE IN CHICAGO!

    Dined on 9/13/2014
The absolute worst steakhouse cuisine I have ever tried in my entire life! Beyond horrendous, the exact counter-antithesis of a truly great restaurant like Mastro's or Bavettes, I cannot fathom how David Burke's is still in business in Chicago?! Most fast-food which I've tasted is appreciably better, the salads, dressings, steak, sauces, crab, side dishes and dessert tasted worse then huge conglomerate chain restaurants like Red Lobster! I would not recommend anyone to dine at David Burke's, you should go to Mastro's, Bavettes or the new RPM Steak instead!

We celebrated my dad's birthday here, and everyone absolutely loved it. The service was outstanding and food was delicious. They were out of the 76-day steak, which was disappointing, and because we had a larger group, we didn't get our cesar salads made tableside (which we were all looking forward to), but our very sweet waiter made up for it by pre-ordering the cake for our table. The sommelier was knowledgeable and didn't try to upsell (we were already picking very expensive wine), and the wine list was very reasonable. We all got either strips or ribeyes, and all were cooked perfectly. Cesars are a standout. Sides were very good, but we were all too full to care that much about them. Really excellent steakhouse.

Billed as Chicago's premier steakhouse I expected wonderful and got 'a bit better than average'. The bone-in rib-eye was overcooked against my request of "juices in the middle". The server was mortified and offered a new plate but I was hungry so declined; instead he delivered a glass of a very good Napa Valley Cab Sauv so I was placated. The appetiser scallops were gorgeous but accompanied by grilled radicchio, something, something and chilli that overpowered their taste. Would I go back -- no. Rather like Avis and Hertz it seems to pay off to go to number 2.

Are you a large, loud man? You probably like steak then. This is the place for you. The steak is amazing. The other food is pretty good, and the staff are very friendly and professional. I went there with two men and two women on a team dinner for work, and our group increased the female to male ratio significantly. Seriously, it was all big loud sales guys yelling at each other over slabs of meat. One of us at our table ordered a drink that came with a slab of bacon in the drink. It's that sort of place. Delicious though!

I am a native Chicagoan who travels extensively. I love steak and have eaten at some of the best restaurants in the US and abroad. I recently had some guests in from out of town and was dying to try David Burke's because Chicago Magazine rated it highly. My overall impressions are as follows: Positives - Seated immediately in spite of it being crowded, apps and sides were pretty good, bacon bites were exceptional Negatives - Decor was not impressive, similar to Palms but lacking character; hostess didn't put napkins on laps; the 40 day aged ribeye was dry, tough, and flavorless with no signs of marbeling; valet asked me if I wanted to walk to my car and gave me the keys to someone elses vehicle. Go to Chicago Cut or Gibsons instead.

I was excited about a reservation here due to all the buzz I had heard. I eat out frequently with clients on the company dime, so I was not put off by the prices, which were high. But when the waiter tried to rush us through, I slowed him down and told him we would let him know when it was time to move on. To his credit, he adjusted and we enjoyed the appetizers and the cocktails. All were good, but the prices on the wine were stupid high. And the renowned steaks were just okay; they did not blow us away. I would rather have the filet at Gibson's with all their noise but also with their reasonably priced wine list. The bottom line: I would not go back of it were on my dime. And I would not go back. I don't get the buzz.

My husband and I both got steaks (1 bone in filet, and 1 50 day dry aged ribeye). Both were to die for. We also got the truffle fries and asparagus to share. Compared to the steaks, they were extremely subpar. Asparagus had an odd flavor and the fries were extremely bland. Tasted like I could've gotten the fries at a very low priced establishment. The desserts, on the other hand were outstanding. Donuts were great and different than what we have had before. The other was a white chocolate brownie sundae dessert (don't know the exact name). Absolutely melt your heart good. Would definitely order it again. Our server was AMAZING - very knowledgable and personable. A great asset to their restaurant.

The food was over-salted and merely decent. Our table was dark, and the noise from the surrounding patrons made it difficult to hear my wife during our anniversary dinner. The service was rushed: we were asked for our drink order about ten seconds after taking our seats. I was expecting a lot more from Burke's based on reviews from critics and friends, but our experience left quite a bit to be desired for the price.

We are from NJ and have been fortunate enough to have our pick of great steak houses. Yes, it was expensive and we knew that before we ever walked in the door. Our food was good. However, we have had steak and sides much better at a fraction of the price. The steak was good, but wasn't particularly tender or flavorful. We knew it was casual before dining, but would have actually preferred the ambiance to be slightly more elevated to match the price. The food was good, but we will try another steakhouse on our next trip. We did go for a tour of the meat aging room and that was neat!

I ate at David Burke's twice years ago when it first opened. I wasn't impressed then and chalked it up to being spoiled by all the great steakhouses in Chicago and the cultural difference between dry and wet aged steaks. Fast forward many years, I've eaten a lot more dry aged steaks and Chicago Magazine rated David Burke's best steakhouse in Chicago. Smells like another Chicago corruption case! David Burke's is NOT the best steakhouse in Chicago and we will never go back. Nothing was exceptional, except the bacon bites, not the caesar salad and certainly not the rib eye and a KC strip, both of which were mediocre. The wine list is not very interesting, but still very overpriced. For over $100/person, there are lot better choices.

My wife and I were staying at The James hotel which is attached to the restaurant on Labor Day weekend. There was a large crowd lined up at the bar waiting to get in. We were seated promptly. Our waiter was very helpful and friendly which in and of itself made the experience nice. Also as I said the restaurant was filled which made it a vibrant scene. We opened with a wedge salad and the steak and lobster dumplings. Salad was fresh and tasty and the dumplings were a unique taste. I would recommend both. We had filet mignon and asparagus for dinner and some ice cream for desert. We had one of the least expensive wines on the list with dinner. The bill was typical for a steakhouse at about $100 per person. I would recommend highly.
