The Treehouse Bar features seating that offers a birds-eye view of the bustling street below.   • "I thought the food was overall very good here. The service however was not and for a pricey restaurant this is really not acceptable. It took 25 minutes for us to just get out cocktails which are 16-17 dollars a piece. The food also did not come out in a timely manner. The waitress was unfriendly and put her hands on our plates touching food first before asking if she could take them away. I understand it was restaurant week but the restaurant needs to hire more staff and bartenders. For NYC service should never be this poor."

  • "While the meal was fantastic from beginning to end (even the bread - a mini loaf, thin breadsticks, and some grapes - was great), and our waiter was spirited, attentive, and friendly, the baby octopus appetizer was by far one of my favorite things I've eaten in a long time and is the one thing I haven't stopped talking about. I went with a friend for restaurant week and felt like I was walking away with a great deal (and a full stomach)."

  • "The food was generally excellent as always. Although the staff were friendly, the restaurant was seriously understaffed. They had 1 sommilier for the entire restaurant which was full from 7 pm on. Thus our wine came when we had almost completed our meal. There was no support staff to keep water glasses full either and it was an extremely warm evening."

  • "I went here because of the great menu and wonderful reviews. First the pretzel encrusted crab cake, OVERRATED! For such a well known crab cake I would of expected it to be lumped at least. The sauces add no contrast to taste. We had several other dishes which were just ok. The best thing about David Burke Kitchen is the culmination of fresh ingredients and rainbow of colors used. Otherwise the sauces were terrible, dishes weren't served hot. Although I will give it to them I did have a beautifully cooked piece of fish! Overall the bread-platter (those ginger-pickled carrots) and dessert (chocolate hazelnut) was my favorite part of my whole meal!"

  • "First time dining at David Burke Kitchen at the James Hotel, so now I can attest that all 3 DB restaurants in NYC are outstanding. The cauliflower "steak" was like nothing I've had before--a delicious vegetarian find. My companions' filets mignon and scallops meals were well received. Of course, we saved room for the signature cheesecake lollipop tree and a shared monkey bread at the end. O.-M.-G. Heavenly. Took a walk up to the garden on the 2nd floor. Had we known there was outdoor dining, we might have requested a table there, because it was a lovely evening, but we'll be back!"

While the menu was interesting and the food delicious, the restaurant lacked an atmosphere and the service was not great despite there only being a few tables of diners. It was a stark contrast to the lounge and rooftop scenes in the James Hotel."

The reviews were nearly all positive for David Burke's Kitchen, and my wife and I enjoyed our dinner immensely. We will be recommending this one to our friends, and look forward to returning again some day. We had a great waiter with a sharp sense of humor that knew exactly what to recommend for a couple of first-timers. The braised short ribs delivered as did the baked oysters. If you have tickets to see a show @ City Winery, like we did---it's only a short 10 minute walk over to the nightclub on Varick. It was a perfect evening as far as I'm concerned."

  • "We stumbled upon this venue as we were walking through Soho. We noted the celebrity chef's name and made brunch reservations for the next day. We were excited to try the food and had no idea we had found a magical garden with a view of the freedom tower, at the James Hotel. Surprisingly it was empty. I guess the city still sleeps at 1130 AM ! The food was good, and just that. My husband had eggs Benedict that could not compete with Norma, and I had a strange tasting egg white omelet that had the veggies separately folded between the omelet , so the egg whites themselves were "blah." We expected a little more for the cost of the meal, but overall I would return because the venue is amazing !"

  • "From the moment we walked in we were greeted with friendly staff. Our waiter was attentive and knew the menu and the food well. My husband had the flatbread. I had chicken dumplings which was delish. There was a tangy barbecue flavor which the chicken sat in but it wasn't overpowering. For dinner our guests had the chicken; one had the prawns with papparadelle , I had a sashimi app as my dinner and my husband had the steak.the steak was the best dish. So tender. For dessert we shared the little donuts with 3 sauces. Uh... YUM!! Great restaurant, cool vibe and great staff!"

  • "I took a friend out for her birthday here and it was a disaster. We ordered salads with dressing on the side. It took about twenty minutes for the salads to arrive, and they were both drenched in dressing. We sent them back, and it took ten more minutes for replacements. One was fine, and the other still had dressing on it - and so had to go back again. After another ten minutes the salad arrived. One salad had the wrong cheese on it as well. When the first salads came out, the grilled shrimp and bacon and potato bits were freshly cooked and warm. By the second and third salads, it was obvious that these were the same items and no longer warm. Although ultimately our meal was comped, it was really terrible all around. Caveat emptor!"

  • "We were a party of 5 on a Saturday night. Table was ready, our waiter was very professional and polite. Everything we ordered was amazing. Started off with the kale salad, chicken dumplings, crab cake, ratatouille jar and the tartar. All were exceptional. Mains were the scallops, the chicken, the salmon, and the succulent salt aged rib steak which was perfectly cooked and seasoned. But the highlights were the desserts. The cheesecake pop tree and it's bubblegum whipped cream....but the absolute highlight was the monkey bread. I can't even put into words how good this dessert is! Good coffee, good selection of beers and all around great experience."

  • "so I read all the reviews.. and booked this anticipating an amazing brunch. the restaurant was empty.. we were the ONLY table.. oh yeah.. you could sit outside.. thought no one asked us if we even wanted to and should you ever have to ask for another cup of coffee at a brunch.. how about five times asking for another cup of coffee.. this is suppose to be a great restaurant.. where was the service food was actually quite good.. just everything else destroyed it.."

  • "From the moment we entered the restaurant, we had great service, delicious food and a wonderful experience. First we had cocktails in the upstairs at David Burke's Garden bar. Fun and casual bar scene at the rooftop bar. Dinner was inside with a fantastic waiter who thoroughly explained the menu items. For starters, we had "Ants on a Log" (escargot fritters) and Crispy Oysters. Bother dishes were prepared artfully and creatively. Main course was Red Snapper special in a deliciously light broth and Scallops with quail egg and bacon. Even the hot fudge sundae was delightful. All in all, the meal was fantastic."

  • " I went to David Burke for birthday dinner with my parents and boyfriend. The food was amazing (the tuna-salmon tartare was fresh and the swordfish paella was moist and flavorful) and the service was great. Perfect portion sizing (the monkey bread for two definitely serves 4 or more!). The upstairs bars are lovely, albeit with drink selections that are a bit more pricey. The only downside was that our reservation was delayed about 45 minutes, which the host attributed to everyone arriving late. Thankfully our server was super attentive. Definitely an older and family vibe, with the bars catering to 30-somethings and professionals. All in all worth it though, I would definitely recommend this place to any one. "
