A word from Dauphin Grille at the Berkeley
The Dauphin Grille and the Berkeley Bar bring a unique and interestingly different place to dine, drink and enjoy the New Asbury Park.
Dauphin is the French word for dolphin but is also known as the emblem for the crowned prince of France. It"s a play on words for us because our cuisine is what we call Seasonal Bistro Fare with a European flare.
The Dauphin Grille and The Berkeley Bar combines "Old School" with an innovative approach to cocktails and fine dining to bring you a exceptional sensory experience.
The Dauphin Grille and Berkeley Bar are operated by Kitschens.

We went and tried the restaurant week menu and everything was excellent-- especially the hot chocolate and doughnuts. The portion of the sea scallops was a bit small, I am not sure if the portion size was related to the restaurant week menu.

A Fried Quail Egg with Pork Belly named Bacon and Eggs is a must try. The best Pork Belly I have eaten. Love the banquett seating, very Romantic for 2 and a nice touch for 4. Music choice was interesting and the bar is lackluster but the food was delucious.

When we arrived, the parking attendant told us that we had to park on the street (even though the lot mostly empty) because we were not staying overnight. I explained that we had lunch reservations and that we would leave in an hour. He still would not let us park so we drove several blocks to find a spot. The restaurant had one other table that was occupied. While the food was good, it literally took one and half hours to get our meal. They were not child friendly. The only juices they had were for adult drinks. And they could not find the tops to their sippy cups. So the kids had water in adult glasses.

It was very nice, but food size left you starving for another place to eat. The food was very good, but way way too small. Also, didnt like the fact that we had to tell the waitress to have a group of girls lower their voices. The place is small enough that it was obvious that they were talking LOUDLY, without me having to ask the waitress to have them lower their voices.

We found the restaurant to be very humid & stuffy. The service was just ok. The waiter never offered us bread, we had to ask for it, and never came around to refill our water. The portions were extremely small, but the food tasted good.

Short 20-25 min walk from ocean grove through the Asbury boardwalk. Nice atmosphere inside as well as outside minus the pool goers walking on the side of the tables to get to the pool a little off putting but not enough to offset the food and service. Warm bread was very good flavor eggplant dipping was a little bitter by our taste but it wasn't needed because the bread was so very good. Lobster bisque was excellent flavor and plentiful with nice chunk of lobster in the center. My husband had the swordfish and I had the skirt steak each good in size and flavor. Steak knife was a little dull for cut off meat. Dessert pound cake with cream and berries was very butterery creamy and delicious and very filing because of consistency and size.

  • Worst Restaurant Experience

    Dined on 8/10/2013
The Restaurant did not notice my written request for Outdoor Seating. We waited 35 minutes for our Salad to arrive. We waited 45 minutes for Bread to be served. We waited 90 minutes for our Entree to arrive. I asked to see the Manager. No such person ever came to our Table. The Hostess finally came to the Table and told me that due to a "miscommunication" in the Kitchen, they neglected to prepare our Meal. When I indicated that I was appalled that my Saturday Night was ruined and that I expected to be accomodated, the Hostess responded with "Do you expect us to pay for your entire meal?". The Dauphin Grille was the WORST Restaurant experience that I have had a many, many years. Maybe the WORST experience EVER. DEFINATELY WILL NOT SURVIVE!!

Our meal was delicious! But we all agreed that someone forgot to tell the staff it was Saturday night....because our experience really lacked any level of enthusiasm and was certainly not on par with the food. No bread offered, even though the bus boy with the bread tray kept circling the room, he decided we didn't want bread. Steak served without a steak knife, coffee with spoons and sugar. We will definitely return for the pistachio encrusted scallops, the citrus risotto and red snapper, but it may have to be on a Tuesday!

I like the spacing of the tables which gives a degree of privacy to our conversation. We were not rushed so our meal was relaxing. The scallops were delicious as well as the raspberry cream brûlée. The server seemed inexperienced as compared to our other visits to this restaurant. The only downside was the air conditioning was not working.

Finally a restaurant around Asbury that has the feel and goods of a real restaurant. Tables are spaced nicely, service is excellent, Hugo provides some level of entertainment and there is even outdoor seating. Food and wine list were very good. Only item of caution is that the bar is next door and band starts around 9:30. So, noise level pops up a quantum after that.

We had loved Market in the Middle for its food & service and were looking forward to a similar experience. Unfortunately it didnt happen. Drinks came way after appetizers; Wine came as we were finishing our meal; coffee came after we'd finished dessert. Waited forrever for check, finally called another server to take it. In addition a number of the house specialty drinks on the menu were not available. Our server was very apologetic, but after the 3rd time it got old. The food, when it came, was OK but not as creative or as tasty as Market in the Middle or other AP restaurants now open. We won't be back and we won't recommend to friends.

Expected a wonderful experience, but Dauphin fell short on so many measures. First we weren't seated, because the server 'ran out of menus.' Really? Can't order drinks at the table and bring the menus later? Then 2 out of our three appetizers were not what we ordered. Finally, one of the entrees (a simple burger) was ordered medium well and came extra rare. Mooo. Service was so slow, one wondered if they lost half the wait staff before the dinner began. It appeared the staff was stretched really thin. At least we had live music while we twiddle our thumbs.

Outstanding food, ambience, and service, as always! Love the Sunday appetizer and drink specials in the Berkeley Bar and loved dining outdoors on the patio for the first time! Everything was just wonderful! Friendly, attentive, professional servers in both the Bar and the Dauphin Grille! Fantastic food (we always look forward to the Hummus Trio!! And the mussels and swordfish were excellent! I always love the Paella! And my father said that the lobster bisque was delicious!)! And - as much as we've enjoyed dining in the dining room - the patio is just beautiful in the nice, warm weather! Love the view of the Boardwalk and Convention Center and the pretty koi pond! Great dining and visiting experience, as always!

Food was very mediocre. Veggie pasta ver bland, swordfish special overlooked and toppings didn't go with grilled fish. Quinoa beet timbale needed more seasoning. Water glasses not refilled. Unfortunately, Marilyn Schlossbach's restaurants usually leave something to be desired especially in the conception of dishes and in sauces making the food relatively tasteless. We know that other people disagree with us, but we've tried her restaurants several times and have come away disappointed every time. Our group ordered three different things on the menu and was disappointed with all three. The server was good, but she obviously had smoked right before serving us. It marred her performance. The ambiance with a small combo at the beginning was very nice, but shortly after we arrived, they were replaced by a VERY loud band next door in the bar, which ruined the ambiance. All in all not a good experience. Sorry, Marilyn.

We went to celebrate my husband's birthday on May 18, 2013. The food was wonderful, especially the New Zealand cockle clam appetizer, a special that evening. The broth was so flavorful that we ate the last of it with a spoon! The only item at our table which we would not get again was the paella. Overall, it lacked flavor. I should have followed the server's recommendation to get the Chioppino special. Wine list was varied and affordable. Overall, the service was a bit disappointing. For example, even though we mentioned when ordering dessert that it was my husband's birthday, no recognition was given in the form of a candle on his dessert or anything at all. Live Jazz in the dining room a very nice treat.

This was my first time at Dauphin; the experience could have been better...however this is not due to the food. The foold was good. I made a reservation for Saturday night for 4 people. Dauphin Grill, however failed to mention that their dining room was closed for a private party. When we arrived they placed us at a small bar table in the bar. NOT the evening I had expected and I should have been notified ahead of time so that I had the option of changing our plans earlier in the day. I will go again....let's see what happens.

We were pleasantly suprised when we made a last minute decision to eat at the Dauphin Grille. Food was good, Enjoyed live Dinner Music playing in the backround on small stage, atmosphere was good, service was good, my girlfriend and I went into the seperate bar area after dinner to meet our friends and enjoy a live band playing music. Although the bar crowd that night(Saturday) was a little too young (20's) for our style we still enjoyed the night. Maybe if the pool table was removed and replaced with lounge chairs/couches it would attract a slightly older more sophisticated crowd ranging 30-60 years old?? This could become a fun hot spot.

Three of us had the scallops which were amazing, (5 stars.) Regrettably the fourth dish, overcooked chicken swimming in what looked like cream of tomato soup, (2 stars) was a huge disappointment. However, that would not stop us from giving a great review because the service was the best we seen in years. We were made to feel as though we were their favorite customers even though this is our first visit. Attentive, genuinely warm, well versed and there when you needed them, but not suffocating. Our server,(Niki)got particularly high praise from my aunt, (a retired waitress with 40 years of experience.) The cocktail menu and the mixologists who prepare these heavenly concoctions are also worthy of respect and high praise.

We were looking for a good restaurant that could accommodate my vegan husband. We were not disappointed, either in the food, the service or the ambiance. Located in the art deco Berkeley Carteret Hotel and facing the boardwalk, it was convenient and attractive. The choices were excellent & they even had a vegan chocolate mousse. We limited ourselves to one glass of wine each, but they had a fairly large choice of wines by the glass. Service was very good - not too intrusive, but attentive - and the entertainment was an excellent jazz quartet that provided music loud enough to hear well but not so loud as to be annoying. So, good food, service, entertainment and ambiance at a fair price. With appetizer shared, $75 before tip. Thumbs up!
