Diner Reviews
  • "Great atmosphere, good food. We were seated upstairs and the noise level was off the charts. We had to raise our voices just to hear our conversations. We will not make that mistake again! "

  • "This has quickly become our favorite restaurant in Sarasota. We brought a friend from out of town and she raved!"

  • "What a find! Beautiful atmosphere and amazing food! We can't wait to go to Darwin's again! Wish we had found it earlier on our Florida stay! We had the Malbec short ribs and the skirt steak with chimichurri sauce. Heaven on a plate! Great service and great background music!"

  • "This was our fifth dining experience at Darwins and regretfully we were disappointed once again. The first couple of times, Darwin's exceeded expectations. The combinations of flavours had been innovative and delectable. The last few times it seemed that the quest for creativity failed. Several of our dishes were mushy with flavours that did not combine well. The entrees (tuna, salmon and skirt steak) were better than the appetizers which we did not finish. The hamburger was quite good. However, overall our dinner was not worth the money. If you go, I recommend ordering entrees and deserts. The decor is fun and interesting."

  • "We ordered 5 small dishes for the two of us, and only one of them was good. It was not a small dish, actually, but a 1/2 portion of the short ribs main course: very good, although a bit one-note in taste. There was no sophistication or complexity in any of the dishes we tried. The wine by the glass was bad (the pinot noir, at least) and expensive. The room was extremely loud, too: ask to be seated somewhere other than by the bar or on the second floor above the bar if you'd like to have a conversation. Overall a very disappointing experience and not worth it: New York prices but TGIF-quality dining."

  • "A small group of us truly enjoyed a special evening at Darwin's. Three out-of- towners commented that they wished that there was a Darwin's where they live...Colorado."

  • "Everything was just great. They beers were so wonderful and our waiter was very helpful and friendly"

  • "All our entrees were savory and unique. Sauces added layers and depth. Beers made a believer of a wine exclusive drinker. Music added to the ambience. Would return ....especially to try happy hour treats!"

  • "Eaten here three times, first two at bar with great appetizers. Last time sit down meal. The brazed ribs three of us ordered on the recommendation of waitress were tender yet very dry. We all ate less then 20-30% of the dish and the manager removed one from our bill. Will move on to other options in town. If the meal was bad enough to remove the tab on one he should have removed all three as we didn't eat them nor take them home. Goodbye."

  • "All of our food was very good. Great calamari, great quinoa with seafood & excellent short ribs!"
    Dined on 3/26/2014
  • "We enjoyed our dinners but felt that there was really too much food on the duck entree and too much fuss on the platings which could have been spent creating more taste. Often places use presentation to cover less than ideal food which hasn't been the case at Darwin's before. Stick to the atun, skirt steak, and short ribs and the tastes blast through. The beers are always interesting with less fizz than many beers which means you can really taste the flavors."

  • "Dinner with friends--their first visit to Darwin's. Food was very good. Service was acceptable. Recommend the lobster taco. Generous portions and good quality."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "The bar area as well as the loft area above the bar, can be very noisy when there is entertainment. Make sure you ask for a quieter area if you plan to carry on a conversation during dinner."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "Start with the Pisco cocktails - innovative & fun. Then an appetizer or seviche. On to a main - duck breast was excellent, my dinner companions had steak & short ribs. Add great service & you have a fabulous experience. My only "complaint," & it's minor, is that the noise level when music is playing is too loud for conversation. But great music!"

  • "Darwin's just continues to get better, and it's always been good. The food is terrific, the wines good and reasonably priced, and the service is excellent. I recommend Darwin's. Period."

  • "My husband loves brew pubs, we both really enjoy Peruvian food so Darwin's was a good find. We did receive a ceviche we didn't order, but then received the one we did order. The only downside to that was it made finishing our main course even more difficult. The service was good, the wait staff very good, but things were a bit slow...not much, just a bit. Why 4.5 stars and not 5? Had we not chosen to eat at Selva Grill the next night, we wouldn't have been able to compare the two. (The chef at Darwin's had been at Selva Grill, but left to open Darwin's, which accounts for the similar menus.)"

  • "There are a lot of Peruvian Restaurants in Sarasota and this one is near the top. The Happy Hour and late night menu is amazing as are the main courses. I was told the chef was voted the number one Peruvian chef in North America by the Peruvian Embassy in Washington, D .C."

  • "A friend that lives in the area recommended this as a place to take my bachelor group for dinner. The place is beautiful. They sat us right next to another group in an empty room which was weird but who cares when the food is that good! The ceviche and tiradito was awesome. Pork belly and lettuce wraps with chorizo were amazing. All of our entrees (quinoa, duck, skirt steak, short rib, and ribeye) we're gobbled up with caveman-like sounds. While paying the check one of the bartenders snapped at us about having already called last call. I guess we were crampng her style by being there until after 10... No worries."

  • "Darwin's on 4th has received rave reviews for its brew pub. But. in an adjoining room is a great Peruvian restaurant. Varied menu. Nice assortment of fish and beef.choices. Excellent house wines. Tables are far enough apart and the noise level low enough that you can have a real conversation. Don't skip dessert especially the dark chocolate container filled with white mousse."

  • "Darwin's on 4th is one of our favorites. The food is always wonderful and the presentations are magnificent. It is great fun to sit at the chef's table and watch the chefs prepare many of the menu selections. I usually drink wine or martinis when I dine out, but I always substitute one of Darwin's excellent dark beers when I'm eating there. Be sure to have dessert although you'll have a hard time choosing, any choice will delight you. The Pot of Mousse is spectacular."

  • "Excellent, vibrant spot to dine, with some excellent dishes (Thai shrimp lettuce wrap and short ribs). The waiter forgot to bring rolls, but was otherwise excellent. The one complaint is the noise. There is nothing in the dining room to absorb sound. The bar is worse, but we loved listening to the great band and watching the dancing. Like the open kitchen too."

  • "The food and presentation of it-exceptional. The craft beers are very good. The noise level of the music is an assault on an otherwise perfect eating out experience. At 7:30 we could hardly escape it. We ended up in the banquet area upstairs which made it tolerable. The food and beer is too good to have to endure noise."

  • "A very interesting restaurant. Good use of space for diners. The service was terrific on a very busy night. The food was delicious; in fact, it was difficult to make a decision because the choices were all so tempting. The duck and the sirloin burger were excellent. Return visits are a must. Highly recommended."

  • "We had wanted to try Darwin's, as big fans of The Cottage, his former location on Siesta Key. Not only is the food at Darwin's exceptional, which we expected, but the restaurant itself is stunningly beautiful, and the ambience is unbeatable, which made our dinner feel like a real occasion. We were seated in the room that has bird's-eye views of the kitchen, but were able to hear at just the right volume level the band playing in the neighboring room, which also includes the bar. Next time, we hope to try the bar, but were unfortunately operating under time constraints so couldn't venture there on our maiden voyage. Highly recommend the piscos, the panna cotta, and all apps and entrees we tried, and can't wait to go back!"

  • "I first discovered Darwin's on a culinary tour and was pleasantly surprised by not only their delicious food, but their fantastic in-house brewed craft beers. A couple of friends and I had 5:00 dinner reservations here before a show at the Van Wesel and had more than enough time to be able to make our 7:00 start time. The service was warm and courteous. The food was fantastic, and we all plan on returning soon to partake of the Happy Hour menu. Thank you for a great experience."

  • "I eat at Darwins every week so this wasn't a case of discovering a new eatery. The difference this time was I brought a VERY LARGE group and everyone enjoyed the experience. Food was great, service was great and they knew we had an event to attend afterward and geared themselves to make sure we were on time. The sea bass was a pearicular hit."

  • "Food was great . Second occasion dining here. Beverage service could have been better. Waiter was a little too condescending for my taste. He was pretty impressed with himself. Table of 6. We all loved what we had. They music from the bar area was loud and made it difficult to talk with our friend at the table. We will be back"

  • "........two of us were served our entrees, my burger was undercooked and my friend's short ribs were tough and dry ---- we told our server and the meals were taken back. Now a few minutes went by and my husband and friend were served.... one meal, the stir fry was fine - he began to eat, but my husbands skirt steak was undercooked.....again the manager and the meal went back... So now 3 of us sat - no food - while one friend ate. It was quite a while before we were all served our returned meals --- by that time, one person had finished his meal --- my second burger was overdone and dry! All in all, so disappointing and not a memorable last evening for our friends"

  • "This is our 2nd time dining at Darwin's and it was still great! My husband had the atun tuna, I had the malbec short ribs, my daughter had the steak and her boyfriend had the hamburger. All dishes were perfectly cooked and seasoned, had great accompaniments, and were brought out quickly. We did not have room for dessert or appetizers, but all of us enjoyed a variety of cocktails that were delish! We had spent several days in South Beach then in Sarasota and my daughter and her boyfriend said this was their favorite meal of their entire trip to Florida. We live in Sarasota so will continue to enjoy dining at Darwins."

  • "I was disappointed with Darwin's. I love Peruvian food and wanted to like it. The decor and ambience are great. The drinks were OK. I had a capirhina and it was more like a mojito without the mint... The ceviche was good but not great. The tuna tiradito was wonderful and the wahoo would have been better with a bit more mango. My folks both had the skirt steak which was tough and I really didn't care for the chimichurri. Doubt that I'll go back but others may like it more..."

  • "A neighbour recommended this place and we made a reservation there a few days later. We were very delighted with the outstanding food and wonderful service. The bar area as we arrived seemed a bit noisy , but once we were in the dining area it was not a problem. The chef is outstanding and the waitress was very familiar with the style of cooking and was patient and friendly and and was able to answer our questions and make small accommodations for us (eg sauce on the side). It was a wonderful experience overall and we would go back in a heartbeat."

  • "My first experience with Peruvian food and I am a big fan. Ordered the BBQ guava salmon accompanied by beer braised collard greens and it was awesome! The other party had Malbec short ribs and was equally as delighted with her choice. First experience with lemonada and that was exceptional as well. Food was beautifully presented. Staff was very friendly and helpful with recommendations. Will definitely be on my list of places to visit the next time I travel to Sarasota."

  • "Stopped by Darwin's before the theater with out of state friends. We sat on the main floor by the open kitchen area. Lots of fun to watch them prepare the food. What fun! We loved the Peruvian menu. We had the cerviche sampler as an appetizer and each cerviche was better than the next. We each ordered different entrees and all were excellent. Well prepared, nice presentation. The food was so good some of us had dessert. The triple chocolate mousse was to die for. Their beer was excellent as well. They will suggest beer pairings for your meal. The service was excellent too. Paced perfectly. We will return in the future."

  • "We've been here twice, and it has been consistently good as an unusual fun place with great food. Fun to try several things off the small plates menus rather than a large entree. Although more "Peruvian-themed" than authentic Peruvian, the food here is always innovative and tasty. However, the short rib that my friend raved about was dry when I had it. Might have been an isolated case, but I'd recommend going for other things. Their "chocolate brûlée" is tasty, but so far from a traditional crème brûlée that we think the name is misleading. Desserts are tasty but small - just enough for a sweet bite to share after dinner. Overall, I'd recommend it and enjoy bringing friends here, but be aware that noise is high."

  • "My husband and I took my father to dinner here looking to show him something special and the mission was acomplished. From the moment we walked in we were greeted right away with a smile a taken to our table. Or server was prompt and friendly. The food as always amazing. Highly recommend this restaurant for any special ocassion."
