A word from Darryl's Corner Bar and Kitchen
The “corner bar” is always the best neighborhood hangout and an integral part of the community. Darryl's Corner Bar & Kitchen is just that: the intersection of good friends, great food and live music. Owner Darryl Settles pours life back into the former Bob the Chef’s space with a sleek bar, exposed brick walls and sexy lighting that offers Roxbury, the South End and Back Bay the sophisticated social spot they’ve been craving. The southern-inspired menu is approachable yet dynamic. Diners can look forward to down home comfort food prepared with an uptown twist food in specialties like Traditional Louisiana style Gumbo; Roasted Haddock with Chorizo Corn Chowder and Marinated Tomato and Fried Chicken & Waffles. It's One of the few places in Boston to offer live jazz and R&B, Darryl’s hosts notable musicians 6 times a week. With its cool vibe, a friendly staff and late night menu until 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Live jazz is great and the food was great, too. This combination does not happen often. Food is mainly southern soul food, so they are typically a bit spicy."

  • "I've eaten at Darryl's before for a night out with the girls. We had an awesome time so I made dinner reservations for 4 people for my birthday. Saturday night at 7:15pm but we were running late. I called and the hostess changed us to 7:45pm without any issues. We were seated in the back room next to the door. Honestly "dim lighting" is an understatement. We had to use the flashlight on our iPhone to see the menu!! Hint Darryl's - when multiple customers are doing the same thing - it's so not cute! Our server was great and was able to provide input on the entrees. Drinks were small - probably an 6oz glass with mostly ice so we only had one. The band sounded great but in the section we were seated you don't get the live music experience."

  • "My reservations were on time. The food was very prompt and delicious. And our seats were exactly where we ask for them. We really enjoyed our evening and we plan on booking another reservation in the near future."

  • "We've had a couple of bad service experiences here. This time we waited over an hour for food to come - and we had to ask for it. The check was not correct. No apologies, no compensation. It's too bad because we like the food."

  • "Nice restaurant. Good vibe. Mediocre food- not good not bad. They don't have any juices that don't come out the gun, which is terrible for someone who is not drinking and just wants a good cup of cranberry juice. Foolishly, I thought this would be a good place to meet with and old friend and have dinner, but it was so unbelievably loud that I might as well have gone to a club. I knew there is live music but I have been to restaurants with live music before that still allowed you to have a conversation. We actually had to wait for them to finish their set and take a break to talk. I was embarrassed having suggested this place."

  • "Loved the burger and the chicken and waffles. The seating is a little cramped, however, so you might want to skip this one if you are on a hot date."

  • "Our 4th time here, each time coming before nearby theatre. The food is always excellent. The service tends to be hit or miss. The live jazz combo that starts at about 7pm is outstanding. I'm always sorry to have to leave the great music to make our curtain."

  • "A favorite that just seems to get better each time we come there. The food is awesome. Some of the best wings we have ever tasted and all else is not far behind. The fantastic band was playing an Al Green song as we walked in and were sat down by the congenial Austin and the night flourished from there. The short ribs were scrumptious as was the gumbo. It can get a bit loud, but if that doesn't disconcert you (as it shouldn't) then you are in for a special treat. If Daryl's was closer to where we live, we'd be weekly regulars. It's that good!"

  • "Are you looking for a good place for you and 6 friends to catch up over a glass of wine? This is not your answer. But if you are looking for a memorable fun evening of good comfort food and great live music, you will love it. Darryl's will break the monotony of going out where it is getting harder to tell one restaurant from another and you can't remember what you had (& that is not from the drinks, it is because there isn't a lot that is unique). Darryl's has good comfort food: collard greens, sweet potato fries, shrimp and grits, ribs, and waffles and fried chicken served with an upscale twist. Enjoy this break from the standard."

  • "Great music also. We went to Darryls not knowing what to expect, and loved the great welcome we got there. Great Southern hospitality. food was fabulous, and the live band was an unexpected treate. Food was a mix of typical Southern comfort food and NewOrleans style - loved the collards!"

  • "I've never been more excited to have southern cuisine become trendy. Darryl's does an incredible job taking classic dishes and slightly elevating them for a gourmet southern dinner. The catfish strips appetizer was incredible. The fried strips were exceptionally light for a fried food and packed a ton of flavor. I had a barbecue chicken that I could not have been happier with. My wife had a roasted haddock with chorizo and corn chowder that was also superb. We topped it off with a sweet potato pie that is a must if have any room for desert. I thought the live music was fantastic, although I'm no expert in jazz. If you're dining during the live music, you should expect a loud environment where casual conversation may be a tad strained."

  • "Was there when it was previously Bob's... Renovation is very well done and they've added space. Staff was very friendly, and people already inside were enjoying themselves. Our waitress (Marcy?Maria?) was amazing-- friendly, attentive, and fun. The band started playing before we left and the music was fun. A little loud, but acceptable for the venue and music type. Would definitely go back again!"

  • "this was our second visit here and remember the first one being better. it took 3 people over 15 mintues to finally get us some menus. they were unable to serve my husband any entree due to food allergies and he definitely was able to get something here the previous time we were there. he was forced to eat 3 side orders instead. after we finally got our dinner, we asked 2 people to get us some extra barbeque sauce and again, this took a very long time for a simple request. the staff was pleasant, but just not very attentive or quick. since we had a play we were attending after dinner, which we told the server, quicker service would have been nice. the food we had was tasty, but not sure we will eat there again."

  • "Darryl's serves amazing soul food. The sweet potato fries are outstanding, so is the calamari. I had the shrimp and grits. Really delicious. Not too spicy. The waitress was so nice, but really slow. She almost forgot our sweet potato fries and she did forget the collard greens. We never saw them. Expect great food and spotty service. Both times I've gone, the service has been marginal. Fantastic music on weekends."

  • "This visit hit a few bumps; but overall it is a great place to dine"

  • "We had the shrimp and grits, which were quite delicious but maybe a little light on the shrimp (4 shrimp I think for $22). The grits were also packed together and fried kind of like polenta cakes. They were good but I don't know if I would call them grits. The server was very nice although potentially a little absent minded (he probably just had a lot of tables to take care of). I was very pleased to get the theater discount because we were going to Huntington afterwards. The band was a little loud and we were the farthest possible away from it but I'm sure it's fun later at night."

  • "Great brunch spread with traditional and soul food options! Very personable staff and great live jazz. I will return on a Friday night to compare the scene."

  • "I like Darryl's a lot and go there a lot. I've mentioned the delicious "glorifried" chicken in previous comments. But this time I want to talk about the great sides. This time it was asparagus (perfectly cooked, tender, with a hint of parmesan to intensify the flavor, and heavenly sweet potato fries. This could be habit forming. It IS habit-forming."

  • "There Sat after 8pm - intimate space was packed, loud and swinging! Reservation times not strictly observed - NO ONE wants to leave table after eating lol. Not traditional Boston experience...love it. Chill at bar, wait for table and enjoy the energy infused live Jazz, on select days, courtesy of Boston's Music Students. Large selection of beer on tap, wine, bottled beers, fully stocked bar w/ unique featured mixed drinks. Once seated wait staff excellent. The chicken options include southern fried; barbecued; or a healthier baked with your choice of white or dark meat! Both the Ribs & the Chicken were among the best this Southerner has tasted in New England - including much higher priced fancy eateries. Sweet Potato & Pecan Pie terrific."

  • "Came for the food, stayed for the music- well sort of. Friendly staff- super nice and welcoming. Delicious food. Although be cautious as to what time you decide to eat-- you will get hit with an entertainment fee!"

  • "My husband & I tried Darryl's because it was close (8 min walk) to Symphony Hall and the reviews were great. The food was delicious and a nice variety. I had catfish with mac & cheese and collard greens--yummy. My husband had chili and stuffed pepper and loved it. We were pretty stuffed so passed on dessert which was unfortunate because the choices (chocolate cake, sweet potato pie...) sounded wonderful. I thought the prices were fair and I liked the tip calculation on the bill (15%/18%/20% =) was useful. Our waitress & hostess were helpful and welcoming, the atmosphere very nice & comfortable, and there is jazz EVERY night and Sunday brunch!!! We'll definitely go again."

  • "I love Darryl's and love going there. And this time the food--the wonderful "glorifried" chicken--was crispier and more delicious than ever. Sides of perfectly cooked asparagus and yummy yams went perfectly with the chicken. My only reservation about Darryl's is the limited dessert menu, so I rarely get dessert. (The old Bob the Chef's used to have wonderful peach cobbler--wish Darryl would bring that back. But this is one of the most satisfying places to eat in Boston."

  • "Specializing in southern dishes, if you like fried chicken and waffles or gumbo this is your place. Although it's a tad loud the vibe is fine for a date."

  • "I would highly recommend this place. The food is delicious, the music is wonderful and the ambiance was excellent. I felt like I was at a 1940s jazz club in the 21st century. It was wonderful!"

  • "I love Darryl's. I love the atmosphere, the food, and the service. I go there a lot and it's been on a consistently high level for years. My one reservation tis time was that the fantastic "glorifried" chicken arrived a little luke-warm. It's still great but it's better when it's hot."

  • "I've only been to Darryl's for their Jazz Brunch, so I can't comment on their dinner options or nightlife. However, this has quickly become one of my favorite brunch spots. It is far less fussy than many of the other options in Boston. You can generally walk in and grab a table without reservations or a wait and immediately help yourself to the brunch buffet. Leisurely sample the brunch options including your standard fare of eggs and potatoes, and "Southern" offerings of chicken and waffles, grits, collards, and even black eyed peas. This food is designed to bring you comfort and it succeeds very will in that regard. While you dine, enjoy the excellent jazz quartet they have on rotation for the day. It's a great way to kick off your day!"

  • "Some of the new servers didn't appear to know the wine list. When asked what wine was a part of a fixed menu we weren't Told what is was, it was terrible wine & added a lot to the bill. The food was excellent, bar scene & music tremendous."

  • "This was our second time to Daryl's and we are happy to have spent valentines there. My only wish is that we knew they would have a preset menu before I made the reservation. That being said, the food as always great and everyone is super friendly. Having a rose for all the women was a nice touch too"
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "The staff couldn't have been nicer. From the time we stepped through the door until we stepped back outside. I had ribs that were great and hit the spot. My wife ordered pork and got chicken that seemed to have been cooked earlier. Good size portions with great desserts. Would give it another try and come back for the jazz."

  • "This visit to Darryl's found the place very crowded. My dinner companion was late and tables were scarce. But the thoughtful staff made everything work, and the food and service was as good as ever. It was a Friday evening and the live jazz starts early, so there's also a cover charge. But it's worth the added couple of bucks."

  • "Open Table, Darryl' was closed. Snow that afternoon but many local restaurants were open. Arrived to find they were not open, totally dark and no notice on the door. Called them to confirm just before we left and no notice on their answering machine of closure. Received confirmation from you of reservation. Disappointed with you and Darryl's."

  • "Great jazz in a fantastic setting! Food was all good, not highest gourmet quality but right on for what they're doing. Service was very pleasant just too slow often. Thoughtful though, and they didn't mess anything up"

  • "Darryl's is one of the most welcoming places in town, which is great because the food is so good and the service is so friendly and considerate. This is soul food with real soul. Ever4ything is beautifully prepared, flavorful, and delicious. We love this place and love going back week after week."

  • "Went here for an engagement party and made last minute reservation on open table. Food is definately great not to fond of overly crowded bar scene. Overall was fun and around midnight there was Dj so we stayed til 1am"

  • "This is second time we've had chance to go to Darryl's. Had another very good meal. The music was enjoyable. Our server was very prompt and responsive. Only comment is they seem to have challenges with reservations (reason for 3 stars under Service category). We were scheduled for 7:15 PM on a busy Friday night. We were not seated until 7:50 PM. Bar area was busy, so couldn't really even go over for a drink while we waited. However, once seated, all was fine- and we had a great dinner."

  • "As always, great ambiance, food, and service. I shared a touching moment with my nephew over his birthday brunch. Our waiter personally went to purchase hot chocolate since they had run out. The jazz performer sang him a special surprise happy birthday among other likeable tunes. We enjoyed a great spread of yummy brunch options...yams, fried chicken, greens, waffles, cheesy grits, eggs, etc. I couldn't have asked for anything more! I have enjoyed Darryl's atmosphere for many years, and I was happy to share my nephews 1st encounter with him. He was impressed!"

  • "I haven't been to this spot in over 8 years when it was Bob the Chef's. Same set up for the most part. I like the added dining area up front. Found the band a little noisy in that area making it hard to talk. Food was good, however it was lukewarm. I like my food to come out very hot and getting cold on the plate in front of me."
    Dined on 1/25/2014
  • "I had been to Darryl's many times before and find it to be a hot-spot for the neighborhood. While the space is tight, none of my experiences ever made me not want to return. We had the crab cakes and the country wings for appetizer and they were both fantastic. The entrees included the traditional glory-fried chicken, catfish and shrimp and grits. All was equally enjoyed. However, the desserts were massive and perhaps would want to be shared, rather than individually ordered. Overall, it was great!!!"

  • "A group of 6 of us went to Darryl's for dinner Sat night. We had reservations and were seated promptly. Our waitress, Asia, was extremely attentive and just really nice. She really did make us feel welcome there. The cook even came out to mingle with guests and get feedback. Speaking of which the good we had was amazing and very different from typical menu of many South End restaurants. We had the chicken wings with peach chile sauce to start-fabulous! The only downside is also one of the best things about Darryl's, which is the live jazz music. It's maybe not a great place to go with a group of people with whom you wish to catch up because it is hard to hear one another."
