Diner Reviews
  • "Great food and service. There was a wedding going on on the third floor which was quite loud. I would recommend you try this place."

  • "Food was good, the service was solictous, responsive and helpful and it is as always a plesant experience. And affordable for business lunches."

  • "We loved eating in the Dining Room at the Darlington House! Homemade pasta, great antipasta, impeccable service!"

  • "We reserved well in advance for dinner, not realizing the dining room would be closed that day and that we would be diverted to the downstairs pup. We should have left right then, and Darlington house should have advised us in advance that they were virtually closed for civilized dining. Upstairs is a nice place for eating; downstairs is a good place for drinking!"

  • "Darlington House (and the predecessor Sesto Seno) has been in business for years. No wonder, they cater to the loyalty of their followers. Unlike a lot of restaurants that are ever-new and staff that churns, DH is a place you get to know and they get to know you. Like traveling abroad, it's nice to come home. Going to DH means never having to worry about the consistent, high quality of food and service."

  • "Went to Darlington House on a Friday night for dinner and it was perfect! Appetizers, entrees, and dessert were all delicious and the service was very attentive. Nothing can compare to fresh pasta made on-site. All of the vegetables and seafood were very fresh as well."

  • "Our party of six on a Thursday night couldn't understand why this restaurant wasn't packed! The recipes were authentic Italian, and if they don't make their own pasta, they could have fooled me! Darlington House was like a little trip to Italy. Quality food at moderate prices for DC, and the portion sizes were generous (but not obscene - you know where you can go for that!) We can especially recommend the fried calamari and shrimp starter (enough for 2) that was clearly house-made!"

  • "We took an out of town guest here. It was our first time, but we depended on the past reviews. The restaurant is decorated in a very attractive and bright style. We easily found street parking. The food was amazing. We all decided on the fish of the day (which was bronzini). Not a single complaint. The wine list is extensive and reasonably priced. Our server was polite, attentive and knowledgable. We would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "One of the best Italian places to eat. Truly, the food and service are tops. Great wine selections. Started with mix of Italian cheese, tomatoes and calamari. Pasta was tops!"

  • "Enjoyed the main dining room on Father's Day with my family who was visiting from out of town. The small, pretty dining room was nearly empty, but it's not intended to be a bustling place, anyway. Host, manager, and servers were all incredibly attentive, but not overbearing. Homemade parpadelle and cavatelli were incredible - uniquely prepared and not your "every day" pasta. Seafood dishes were done well with nice level of marinade that still let the great flavor of the fish come through. Great spot for older and/or more mature crowds. Dining experience was well-paced and quite calming. Great spot for older and/or more mature crowd. Head to the cantina downstairs for more of a bistro/pub feel."

  • "Good spot for brunch. The doughnut holes were a great part of brunch - make sure you order those!"

  • "Wanted a nice place to dine that was easily accessible from Metro while in DC. Selected Darlington House because one of the members of our party particularly wanted Italian. Everyone was very pleased with their menu selections. The attentive service and willingness to accommodate dietary restrictions and/or personal food dislikes made it a delightful evening for all. The flat bread appetizer and salads were excellent. The branzini was cooked perfectly and the lemon/butter/wine sauce on it was light and complemented it well. Make sure you save room for dessert, especially the Tiramisu. A good wine selection added to our pleasure. When back in DC, we will certainly return!"

  • "Was surprisingly quiet for Memorial Day weekend. The omelets were as fluffy as ever, the hash was great, and the bloody Marys were nice and spicy. Great brunch. "

  • "Great food but much too loud. Disappointing after we specifically requested a quiet table and were then seated next to a large and loud party. We were a party of 4 and had a yell across the table to talk. Overall, good restaurant but much much too loud. Please make more of an effort to drown out noise. "

  • "I enjoy this restaurant. The wait staff are a blast from the past in terms of attentive customer service. The ambiance is lovely, elegant. The food is good, pasta is made there. And you can actually have a conversation and hear what your dining companion is saying."

  • "The service was really slow, they didn't check on our food until the end of the meal, and the server was generally inattentive and not too friendly. The food was good but not too impressive and there was a wedding reception going on upstairs which meant we could hear all the dancing and shuffling throughout our meal. "

  • "I came for brunch for the first time and it was amazing. The menu offered many dishes and great breakfast options and The bloddy mary's are the best in town. Upon dining I noticed there was an event held on the 3rd floor which they call the library. The event coordinator was kind enough to show me around when the party was over. great spacing for large groups. She also showed me the cantina on the 1st floor. I was shocked to see one restuarant holds 3 different optional venues for any occassion and noise level is never an issue. The staff here are very welcoming and friendly I will be back."

  • "I can see why Darlington House has been around forever. It is private, pretty, has high quality food and a nice menu. Particularly appealing is how unpretentious the vibe is. My date and I had an excellent meal of frutti del mar and fish of the day and a couple of glasses of good merlot. The service was attentive. It was a little loud, but only because there happened to be two big groups set in long tables. They were having a good time eating and drinking and talking, so no blame. I'd go there again."

  • "I had no idea this place existed but I am glad that I found it! Price - I honestly expected the price tag to be much higher, especially when you see how well they did in the other categories. This place is moderately priced. I felt like I got a good sized portion and awesome experience and great service for a rather inexpensive price compared to other DC establishments. Service - Off the charts. Very attentive and friendly. Ambiance - Its like you area eating in an old-time dining room. Well-lit during the day and just enough light in the evening. Such a comforting feeling. Food - Out of this world! I sampled a few different entrees and was impressed with each one them. I wish I had more characters so I could write more!"

  • "We were delighted to find reservations available when we wanted them on a busy Saturday night. The table we were given was the best in the house. The food was excellent and once we were noticed the service was excellent."

  • "We went to Darlington House to take a visiting relative to dinner. We live in the general neighborhood and are always looking for outstanding restaurants nearby. At Darlington House the food was delicious, the wine list had many options by the glass, and the service was outstanding. I also would recommend dining in the upstairs dining room, which has a chrming, gracious ambiamce."

  • "The restaurant was really nice, and very formal. We had a 11:45 reservation and it was really empty. A little fancier than my taste, but the food was very tasty. Excellent bloody Mary. I think if we sat on the outside patio our experience would have been more casual. "

  • "I came here for my college graduation. The food was alright, can't say it was the best I ever had but it was definitely good. But since we were basically the only people there is was very quiet. However the service was great and attentive, (especially since my family can be very demanding) Nice decor."

  • "Italian food in DC. Get a mixed platter to start with, ask your Ernesto and he will set you up. Dinner must have a pasta. Pasta is one of the best around. "

  • "I came here for Easter brunch with my family from out of town. The food and service were good. The donut holes were amazing. I would have liked to see a few more vegetarian options, but I got the French toast which was delicious. I would note though that the portions were kind of small for the cost of the food."

  • "We sat outside and it's a nice place to enjoy the weather and watch the city go by. Food was middle of the road. Upstairs inside has very nice, historic feel to it, but we did not sit up there."

  • "Nice elegant but comfortable dining room in an old townhouse with good natural light. Its not gourmet, but the food is good, as is the wine list and its well priced. Service is excellent, especially the attention we received from the manager, Ernesto who goes out of his way to make you feel welcome. But the best reason to make this a regular business lunch or dinner spot is that you can actually hold a conversation. Its not a stuffy or overly formal atmosphere but it just doesn't get that loud in there. Although this is my first review, I've been many times and its always a good atmposphere. Tables are well spaced and they don't mind if you linger for a while after finishing your meal to complete your business discussions."

  • "Came here for brunch. It was sunny outside but not that hot. The inside of the restaurant was maybe 60 degrees since the front door was open and the heat wasn't on. Way too cold inside to enjoy our meal. Donut holes and dipping sauces were bland. Cheeseburger with the fried egg was delicious. The bartender serving us was friendly and attentive even though he was also serving the patio tables. Overall a decent experience but nothing to write home about."

  • "I made a reservation through OpenTable for brunch here at 11:45 on a Sunday. There were 3 of us. We were seated immediately and ordered shortly thereafter at about 12:05. Our waiter did not come to check on us unless we flagged him down to ask him where our food was. Nobody refilled our drinks unless we could get their attention and ask for them. We asked about our food FOUR TIMES...every time we were told it was coming right out. One guy who seemed to be acting as the manager even came to us and told us our food was actively being plated...which was a lie, as our food still never came. At 1:15 we finally gave up and left some money for the cold coffee and soda we had. As we left, nobody even apologized. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE"

  • "Stumbled across this small beautiful gem for the first time. The food and service was impeccable. We didn't want to hold up the dinner service so we were escorted downstairs to the Cantina pub for more drinks. A spacious long bar with many table tops and delicious drinks. Behind the bar was a gentleman, Alex, who served us throughout the night was very kind. If I'm in the area and in the mood for happy hour and drinks I will definitely go back."

  • "I came with a large group on a Saturday night. We sat downstairs in the pub area where we could order from both the upstairs and downstairs menus. We enjoyed delicious food, wine, and a fun atmosphere. I would definitely recommend Darlington House. A tip - if you're really hungry, I would recommend considering the pub menu which had lower prices but bigger portions."

  • "My husband and I were highly pleased with our Italian dining experience at Darlington House. Beautifully restored historic home in vibrant Dupont Circle with light rain on the windows and damp air outside, set a lovely mood for the delicious meal. Usually appetizers outshine entrees in taste and flavor, but here, they both held their ground. The charcuterie platter and calamari were excellent and the osso bucco and veal were equally memorable. We were also impressed by the extensive list of pastas handmade on site and our al dente dish was exceptional. We enthusiastically recommend this place!"

  • "I visited Darlington two years ago for my birthday with group of girlfriend's for brunch and everyone loved their food. I went for dinner with a friend around 5 for dinner and they could not find our reservation, but seated us promptly. I enjoyed their bread with the olive oil and balsamic dressing and caprese salad that we shared. She had the salmon which she ate every bite of and I ordered the pasta with salmon and vegetables. My dish was nothing special but it was good. I would definitely return to this restaurant, my only issue is the parking. Its best to metro or leave time to find parking because it can be difficult being in the center of Dupont."
