A word from Dafni Greek Taverna
Dafni Taverna, conveniently located in the heart of Times Square and the theatre district, provides a dining experience reminiscent of a small village in Greece. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, from the beamed ceiling to the wood plank floor, from the exposed brick wall to the soft Greek music playing in the background. Guests enjoy the hospitality and fine home cooking that the country is famous for. The restaurant serves authentic Greek cuisine, prepared simply and deliciously, using only the freshest and purest ingredients. The menu starts with a large selection of hot and cold meze, and an array of classic salads, as well as a few innovations. Entrees include many of the traditional dishes, a selection of charcoal-grilled meats and fish, and a few intriguing additions, such as grilled quail on a bed of spinach, and braised lamb shank with hilopites (a type of pasta). Delicious, homemade baklava, galaktoboureko and rice pudding are prepared fresh daily in our kitchen.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Have enjoyed several lunches and dinners at Dafni usually pre or post-theatre. The food is consistently very good and reasonably-priced. The gyro sandwich is a favorite and even the fries are excellent. There was a little confusion with our order on my last visit, and I was impressed that the waiter brought us a dessert compliments of the house."

  • "Our regular Greek restaurant. We've tried others, but we like what we eat here the best. The grilled lavraki is the best. Huge portion with roasted lemon potatos and escarole. A big Greek salad with mustard dressing, easily shared. On other occasions we've had the lamb kabob and the shrimp over rice, also excellent. Not a pretty place, but not ugly either. We come to eat, and there is plenty that is great."

  • "Really good Greek food, beautiful and friendly place, we tried their beer and liked it very much too."

  • "No matter how busy this restaurant is, the service/staff is always excellent"

  • "I've been coming here for a while. The food is wonderful with large portions and attentive wait staff and nice wines. I never feel rushed. Unfortunately as more people have discovered this "neighborhood gem" it has become increasingly crowded with people packed into small tables (I was there recently at 6pm on a Tuesday & it was jammed!)--and extremely noisy. I tend to leave with a strained voice from trying to make myself heard by my dining companion. It was a lot nicer before it was "discovered". However it's so convenient and so good I'll probably keep going."

  • "The premises to which we were warmly welcomed when our party arrived at 5 o'clock on a Tuesday night were gracious but marred by music needlessly loud, though not obtrusive. Service was prompt and pleasant. The eggplant appetizer proved truly superb, and the entrées excellent. Portions were generous and extra pita ours for the asking. But as the other tables filled, noise from talking and clinking grew louder and louder, and we strained to hear each other."

  • "The location is great if you're looking for an off the beaten path eatery near the theatre district. Good menu and pricing affordable, too. Only negative is the noise level. I had to shout at my friends at the table due to the noise level in the room. Once the restaurant is filled, be ready to use sign language to communicate, or shout at your fellow diners. But if you're just in it for a quick bite before a show, it's a good selection."

  • "The food was delicious and fresh - the selection amazing. Close to theaters but is not a tourist trap. I am PICKY but would definitely recommend or return."

  • "This is a welcome return visit to our favorite NY Greek restaurant. The service is always attentive and kind. The food is outstanding. Not too much oil, lots of flavor, generous portions. And they REALLY know how to prepare fish. We love it here."

  • "Needed to eat in the area and found Dafni. I admit I've passed it many times but never gave it a thought. Tried it and will definitely return. Saturday brunch - dips and omelets were excellent. Can't wait to try dinner."

  • "A reliable and relatively inexpensive dinner on 42nd Street in the theater district. Friends had recommended this restaurant, and we were very pleased. Appetizers and entrees served in large portions by a pleasant wait staff. Ordered grilled calamari and grilled octopus apps, along with a Mesanatolitiki (Middastern) salad with grilled chicken. We will be back."

  • "I've been to Dafni once before and really enjoyed the food. The appetizers are tasty (although no hummus!), the entrees are varied and reasonably priced. The wine list is limited and mostly Greek, but they do have a selection of beers. It is just outside the major chaos of times square but a great place if planning to do sightseeing in midtown. The one major downer was no air conditioning. It was about 80 degrees; don't know if it was broken, or there just isn't any air conditioning, but it was stuffy!"

  • "No other Greek restaurant in Manhattan turns out authentic Greek food at moderate prices, this delicious. Even my first generation Greek American friend raved! Don't miss the Spanakopita as well as the wonderful, nicely priced, Greek wine list."

  • "I enjoy coming here when I am in the neighborhood because of the terrific menu, delicious food, pleasant wines, fair prices and generous prices besides friendly staff. All in all, a great formula."

  • "There are not too many greek restaurants that I enjoy, but Dafni is one of them. We all enjoyed the food and the service was quick since we had to make a show. Great restaurant if you are going to the theatre. I had chicken on skewers, which was delicious. The greek salad was large enough to feed the 4 of us. I would recommend Dafni if you enjoy authentic greek food."

  • "We chose this restaurant randomly and we were thrilled. The food was great and our server was extremely friendly and helpful. Obviously many others feel the same as it was full on a Monday night. We will go again when we are in NY."

  • "Excellent, creative Greek menu, for lunch or dinner. Pleasant, efficient service. So convenient to theaters -- a hidden away discovery on West 42nd Street, and reasonably priced, too."

  • "Food very good. Service quick which is good. Could use something to absorb the noise."

  • "We've enjoyed Dafni a few times - usually on Sunday evenings before the theater. This time we were there mid-week and the place was still great but very busy and louder. Will still go back but will (hopefully) get a less lively evening."

  • "I'd been coming every few months since they opened but hadn't been in quite a while. Happy to report this is still a fine casual, moderately priced, not too loud and delicious option in an area with few others. Our waiter was friendly yet professional; food was perfectly prepared and portions were generous. Good variety of Greek wines, reasonably priced. Some tables are a bit close together, and those for two can get pretty crowded once the food arrives. But compared to how packed in and loud other similar places in the neighborhood are, it's pretty comfy and conversation does not require shouting."

  • "Dafne is a great place to have lunch or dinner when in the theater district. The food is good and the prices are fair."

  • "I have been to this restaurant three times now and have had great service and delicious food each time. Between two people we shared a greek salad, spinakopita, and gyro plate- definitely enough to satisfy us and under $40! Great deal for great food in the theater district."

  • "I am something of a connisseur of Moussaka. Dafni's was good, a bit dry, and would have been better without the potato. I would give it a B+. The appetizer plate was quite good. I especially liked the lemon mashed potatoes."

  • "Finally got together with my cousins after they were snowed out (snowed in?) in December. My wife and I had a very good meal there then and we were not disappointed in our return. LOVED the vegetarian Mousaka, ample Greek Salad and Galatabudiko dessert. Others enjoyed the Chicken KaBob and the Shrimp Spanakorizo. Prices were very reasonable, too!! Would recommend to anyone who enjoys Greek food and a relaxed atmosphere."

  • "It's hard to say, but I had to leave Dafni before I could eat. It was noisier than Times Square. I was grateful for the relative silence (!) of 42nd Street when I exited. Our waiter told me I was not the first to complain of the noise, and the host said I was not the first to leave without eating. Noise level should include a choice that says PAINFUL."

  • "If you need to be on West 42nd street area for dinner, this place is a good choice. Food was good, service was good, prices were very reasonable. Not a place I would go out of my way for, but it is fine if you are going to the theater."

  • "Dafni Greek Taverna never disappoints. It is extremely convenient to the theater district and very close to Port Authority Bus Terminal. The menu is typical Greek food, but every dish is well prepared and seasoned. Portions are very generous and can easily be shared. The fish dishes are fresh and the roasted potatoes are not to be missed. Staff is friendly and extremely well trained, which just adds to the dining experience."

  • "We found this restaurant based on Yelp reviews. Wanted a restaurant in the Theater District at a moderate price. We were two couples...all of us enjoy Greek food and were thrilled with our experience. Friendly, attentive service, reasonably priced delicious food, affordable wine list and tables that were far apart enough that we could enjoy both conversation and the attractive decor. We have been here twice in the past two months and would definitely recommend to both New Yorkers and out of towers."

  • "Went for dinner after the manatee show. Crowd was moderate but it is a good idea to make a reservation. The Grilled Lamb Chops were very good and the Lamb Shank was out of this world, a real must try. The service is good and the location is a plus. Nice evening."

  • "Food was good but service not so good. Our waiter seemed attentive to everyone but us. So loud you had to yell to talk to your party of only 3. I won't go back."

  • "I normally dread eating in the Times Square area, but Dafni has become my go-to spot for midtown dining. You're just out of the tourist zone, and you can tell. The food is absolutely delicious, lots of vegetarian options, and service is quick and friendly. Avoid the chains and keep this one on your radar. I've been there 4 times now and have always left quite satisfied."
