  • "The exterior weathered look makes for a pleasant surprise on entering. The room has a mature charm. The tables are far apart for private and confidential business discussion. The food and service is on par with the best the city has to offer . The staff is attentive and welcoming."

  • "The waiter described the specials and two of us chose the "rack of lamb". The lamb was crusted with an overpowering horseradish breaking and deep fried. Neither were in the description. I took 1 bite it was so terrible. When I asked the waiter why he didn't mention the horseradish, he argued with me that there wasn't horseradish that it was a Dijon mustard. After checking with the kitchen he came out & apologized that he was wrong. Still not inclined to take the meal off the bill. Instead of taking it off the bill, he chose to let me leave hungry & angry. Food overall was mediocre at best & unless you have a lot of disposable money - don't bother. Will never go again & will let everyone I know not to waste their money there."

  • "I took an older lady as my guest for dinner. I had to go catch a plane, so we each ordered a starter instead of an entree, all of which was delicious. Even though we ordered relatively little, EVERYONE was extremely accommodating and gracious. Also, everyone was smiling and friendly. Excellent and reasonably priced wine list.."

  • "Our experience at Da Umberto was disappointing given the great reviews it receives. The best part was the atmosphere, which is nice and relaxing. The menu choices sounded interesting, but the food was mediocre at best (since we shared dishes, we tried quite a few different things). The service was friendly but a bit agressive. The server tried to get us to order more; the busser tried to remove dishes before we were finished. This included a $16.00 (!) glass of wine which was quite ordinary. I was looking for a nice neighborhood restaurant with great food where you could carry on a quiet conversation. Da Umberto is relatively quiet by NY standards, but I'm afraid I'll have to keep looking!"

  • "Wonderful experience. Busy night, but the service was impeccable. They have several waitstaff attend to each table and they do it quietly. The appetizer specials, an arugula salad, and a spicy calamari were wonderful. The entrees ravioli stuffed with artichoke and a pesto, mascarpone cheese sauce was delightful. The roast pork was beautifully cooked, They were busy, but did not rush us. Can't wait to go back."

  • "This place is like eating at El Morocco. Food ok but expensive, but the scene is a hoot. Business folks on expense accts and some Gambino family members. Waiters try hard to up sell. When they offer specials ask for prices. Veal chop sounded good until he reluctantly mentioned that it was $60. But do dress up a little and see what NYC was like 50 years ago."

Diners like myself will enjoy this experience more if they would casually slow the pace down and let the diners enjoy the moment. The restaurant was not fully committed in fact it was half full. Why would the service be rushing around so as to rush the diners out. It was not necessary. Needless to say it made it not so pleasant experience."

  • "We loved dining at Da Umberto. We had a very early reservation due to having to leave for a show, and were the first diners of the evening. Lots of wait staff, and our waiter Tudor was very attentive and sensitive to our having to dine quickly, kept the pace moving, but not annoyingly too fast. The food was spectacular, and the kitchen so accommodating. We told Tudor we planned to share the pasta course, and he had the kitchen plate our portions accordingly. The lamb risotto was a special, should be on the menu every day! Dover Sole was melt-in-your-mouth! Yummy desserts, don't miss the Panna cotta perfection!"

  • "My wife and I had dinner at Da Umberto many years ago and loved it but for whatever reason had not been back on previous trips to NYC. We corrected that on this trip and the experience was fantastic in every way. The veal chop was magnificent and the Cornish game hen was the best I have ever eaten. We love the neighborhood feel of a family owned place and eating with locals who know their way around. I won't let years pass again before returning to Da. Umberto."

But multiple members of the waitstaff not just offering but pushing everything from more appetizers to bottles instead of glasses of wine to dessert was a turnoff. I'd probably go back just for the short ribs & polenta though!"

Also the filet mignon stake was disappointing and the spinach was salty. Just both dishes had a huge portion. The soup was pretty good though. The atmosphere Is good but we wouldn't go back there for eating."

The atmosphere is old-world, the service is formal yet friendly, accommodating, and even charming. The food is bliss: not some new cuisine, but rather superb Italian food, beautifully plated, delicious. Lots of choices for all fussy diners. The crowd? It's a restaurant for grownups, that's the only way I can describe it. The customers can be interesting to watch--wealthy older men with gorgeous younger women, Frank Sinatra-wannabes accompanied by tough-looking guys wearing chains, business people. It is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC, and every time I am lucky enough to dine there I am thrilled."

Service was exceptional. We enjoyed ourselves immensely and plan to return soon. It's no wonder that they have been in business for over 25 years."

  • "We had reservations for 8:30. Restaurant confirmed that day. Our coats were whisked away, and we were seated at a lovely table tucked away for two. Our wait staff was exceptional, providing just the right level of attention, e.g., knowing when it was ok to clear dishes without disturbing us; also if we needed something, they were quite responsive to just a glance upwards. We didn't spend much time on wine (just one glass) so I can't comment on the wine list.) The food was outstanding - perfectly prepared chicken with artichokes; delicious homemade Italian sausage and broccoli rabe. I had the best ricotta cheesecake since I was a kid. It reminded me of holidays with homemade pastries from the Italian store. We loved this restaurant."

My friend and I shared the mushroom appetizer and the special veal meatball appetizer as well as our entrees or rigatoni in lamb ragu and fettuccini with white truffle. Both appetizers were fantastic. The ragu was maybe a little oversalted but the white truffle fettuccini was absolute perfection. Dessert was tiramisu. Everything tasted fresh and homemade and the presentation was beautiful. It was clear that they take a lot of pride both in what they serve and the service itself. Great evening."
