Diner Reviews
  • "Excellent dinning experience. Just perfect. Best veal you will ever experience."

  • "Hmmm hmmmm is what I hear from my friends and co-workers, when I introduce them to Da Umberto! People who are tagged as being picky about their food have no problem of being satisfied by what they order here. My friend wrote on FB "...The food was fabulous, the service perfect!!! In the great words of Arnold Schwarzenegger, " I'll be back!". Great choice ...""

  • "Da Umberto is, hands-down, the most sophisticated, innovative and reliable Italian dining in Chelsea. The maitre'd is polished, knowledgeable and genuinely friendly. The waiters know what they are talking about, not just reciting the evening's specials. They are attentive to diners' needs. The food is simply delicious, from the complicated pastas to the simply grilled Dover sole. Every aspect of the restaurant deserves commendation. THe prices are high, but so is the value."

  • "In most other cities this might be a top 5 destination. In NYC, it is merely an excellent neighborhood destination. I might not drive across two Boroughs just to have dinner here, but the food & service is simply excellent."

  • "Absolutely delicious food ! I once was strolling by and had lunch there and was so impressed that I promised to remember where it was so I could return. At the time I was just moving into the neighborhood and somehow forgot this wonderful little place. I am so happy that I returned because it confirmed to me what a GREAT Italian restaurant we have and so very close to us. The Flatiron/Grammercy area doesn't have many choices for great Italian fare and this is TOP NOTCH. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone that is looking for a wonderful Italian spot in this area. Great service, great food, just plain great!"

  • "This was our second visit to da Umberto in a few years. The experience is remains very good. Seats at the bar were hard to come by but when we were able to sit, the bartender took great care of us , especially the birthday girl. We shared a special appetizer of soft shell crabs that was perfect. After living in Mary;and for 23 years, I feel qualified to be a fair judge of crab in general. We dined on the special cornish game hen and the special veal chop. Both were outstanding. All in all it was quite an enjoyable evening. Despite numerous other dining options in NYC, we will return a third time."

  • "Wonderful in every way! So good, we just came back again within a week to enjoy it again. Warm & welcoming with special dishes that can't be beat. Mille grazie! We'll be back."

  • "This is one of the best restaurants in NY. For Italian, in the top 5 for sure and I have been going here over 20 years. This trip the room was especially noisy, but the antipasto appetizer was excellent as usual as was my rigatoni from the menu--cooked al dente in the most perfect way. Tiramisu for desert was only average, so next time back to the Italian Cheesecake for sure. As usual, easy to park right on the block."

  • "We live on 17th Street and have walked pat Da Umberto many times. We finally tried it----what took us so long. The ambiance, the service, the food were all right up our alley. We'll be back."

  • "The service was attentive and pleasant without being hovering. The food was very good, but not stellar. The noise level was comfortably quiet."

  • "This was my second time coming here; found it just by walking down 17th street. Would not have known about it otherwise. Food was amazing; some of the best fresh Italian I have had in NYC. Lunch prices are the same as dinner, so just be careful if you're looking for a reasonable priced lunch with colleagues. But if you want to win them over with a great meal, this place works!"

  • "The list of specials will be as long as your arm and each thing will sound better than the next. I've never had an average meal here; it's always been excellent."

  • "One of the best Italian Restaurants you've never heard of in NYC"

  • "One of the nicest dinning establishments in the city. Food and services is outstanding! Expansive wine list. On the pricey side but worth it."

  • "I've dined here many times before and each time, DU doesn't disappoint. The service was attentive and engaged. The welcome warm and the experience was very pleasurable. We chose specials and they were all quite good. Nice flavors. We ordered a nice bottle of wine that we enjoyed as well. We never felt pressure nor did we feel rushed. In an era where there is such competition and often a lack of interest in the dining public, DU is a classic that never loses sight of the food and service."

  • "Our daughter lives in NYC. We wanted to take her to Da Umberto for dinner while we were visiting from IL. It was a wonderful experience. Every aspect of it deserves five stars. The food and service could not be any better. Make a reservation sooner rather than later. You will not be disappointed."

  • "My husband and I had a delicious and special meal for his birthday. The staff was charming, well informed and gave thoughtful recommendations. The interior was scenic and serene, with warm greetings and goodnights. Much more personal than the usual night out! We'll definitely be back. "

  • "Excellent Italian. Rice balls, burrata, veal chop, pasta all great. Quiet but lively ambience - with a classical look, belied by the dingy entrance on an out of the way street."

  • "I've been a customer of DaUmberto for a very long time and I never get tired of it. It is the one restaurant that is consistenly superb -- you are always greeted warmly at the door, the weight staff is excellent, and the food always amazing. I will never stop going to DaUmberto! "

  • "We came here for dinner on a Friday night. The atmosphere was very lively and pleasant. My wife has rather severe allergies and I noted this at the time we made the reservation. Once we were seated, the manager came over to discuss them and assured us they would be able to accomodate. It made my wife feel very comfortable and they were true to their word. Service and food were excellent but about 1/3 of the way in both my wife and I kept smelling a funny odor. It was coming from one of the other diners at another table. The manager sensed something was wrong and immediately came over. I explained about the smell and he immediately moved us then and there. I don't know many places that would have picked up on our discomfort that quickly. A+"

  • "The exterior weathered look makes for a pleasant surprise on entering. The room has a mature charm. The tables are far apart for private and confidential business discussion. The food and service is on par with the best the city has to offer . The staff is attentive and welcoming."

  • "The waiter described the specials and two of us chose the "rack of lamb". The lamb was crusted with an overpowering horseradish breaking and deep fried. Neither were in the description. I took 1 bite it was so terrible. When I asked the waiter why he didn't mention the horseradish, he argued with me that there wasn't horseradish that it was a Dijon mustard. After checking with the kitchen he came out & apologized that he was wrong. Still not inclined to take the meal off the bill. Instead of taking it off the bill, he chose to let me leave hungry & angry. Food overall was mediocre at best & unless you have a lot of disposable money - don't bother. Will never go again & will let everyone I know not to waste their money there."

  • "I took an older lady as my guest for dinner. I had to go catch a plane, so we each ordered a starter instead of an entree, all of which was delicious. Even though we ordered relatively little, EVERYONE was extremely accommodating and gracious. Also, everyone was smiling and friendly. Excellent and reasonably priced wine list.."

  • "We had a lovely dinner a few nights ago . Ravioli was delicious. We had it two ways,. Entrees were also delicious. Pork and Osso Bucco. Both delicious. Good bottle of Italian wine too! Looking forward to our next visit when we return to NYC."

  • "Our experience at Da Umberto was disappointing given the great reviews it receives. The best part was the atmosphere, which is nice and relaxing. The menu choices sounded interesting, but the food was mediocre at best (since we shared dishes, we tried quite a few different things). The service was friendly but a bit agressive. The server tried to get us to order more; the busser tried to remove dishes before we were finished. This included a $16.00 (!) glass of wine which was quite ordinary. I was looking for a nice neighborhood restaurant with great food where you could carry on a quiet conversation. Da Umberto is relatively quiet by NY standards, but I'm afraid I'll have to keep looking!"

  • "Everything about da Umberto was perfect, from the cocktails to the antipasto to the wine and entrees. Mostly we ordered the items our waiter recommended. Really loved it."

  • "Wonderful experience. Busy night, but the service was impeccable. They have several waitstaff attend to each table and they do it quietly. The appetizer specials, an arugula salad, and a spicy calamari were wonderful. The entrees ravioli stuffed with artichoke and a pesto, mascarpone cheese sauce was delightful. The roast pork was beautifully cooked, They were busy, but did not rush us. Can't wait to go back."

  • "This place is like eating at El Morocco. Food ok but expensive, but the scene is a hoot. Business folks on expense accts and some Gambino family members. Waiters try hard to up sell. When they offer specials ask for prices. Veal chop sounded good until he reluctantly mentioned that it was $60. But do dress up a little and see what NYC was like 50 years ago."
