Diner Reviews
  • "The service was attentive and pleasant without being hovering. The food was very good, but not stellar. The noise level was comfortably quiet."

  • "This was my second time coming here; found it just by walking down 17th street. Would not have known about it otherwise. Food was amazing; some of the best fresh Italian I have had in NYC. Lunch prices are the same as dinner, so just be careful if you're looking for a reasonable priced lunch with colleagues. But if you want to win them over with a great meal, this place works!"

  • "The list of specials will be as long as your arm and each thing will sound better than the next. I've never had an average meal here; it's always been excellent."

  • "One of the nicest dinning establishments in the city. Food and services is outstanding! Expansive wine list. On the pricey side but worth it."

  • "Main fish dish came raw inside. Other dishes were just OK."

  • "I've dined here many times before and each time, DU doesn't disappoint. The service was attentive and engaged. The welcome warm and the experience was very pleasurable. We chose specials and they were all quite good. Nice flavors. We ordered a nice bottle of wine that we enjoyed as well. We never felt pressure nor did we feel rushed. In an era where there is such competition and often a lack of interest in the dining public, DU is a classic that never loses sight of the food and service."

  • "I really like the food, but I felt rushed by the waiters and the noise level was unbearable. "

  • "Our daughter lives in NYC. We wanted to take her to Da Umberto for dinner while we were visiting from IL. It was a wonderful experience. Every aspect of it deserves five stars. The food and service could not be any better. Make a reservation sooner rather than later. You will not be disappointed."

  • "My husband and I had a delicious and special meal for his birthday. The staff was charming, well informed and gave thoughtful recommendations. The interior was scenic and serene, with warm greetings and goodnights. Much more personal than the usual night out! We'll definitely be back. "

  • "Excellent Italian. Rice balls, burrata, veal chop, pasta all great. Quiet but lively ambience - with a classical look, belied by the dingy entrance on an out of the way street."

  • "I've been a customer of DaUmberto for a very long time and I never get tired of it. It is the one restaurant that is consistenly superb -- you are always greeted warmly at the door, the weight staff is excellent, and the food always amazing. I will never stop going to DaUmberto! "

  • "We came here for dinner on a Friday night. The atmosphere was very lively and pleasant. My wife has rather severe allergies and I noted this at the time we made the reservation. Once we were seated, the manager came over to discuss them and assured us they would be able to accomodate. It made my wife feel very comfortable and they were true to their word. Service and food were excellent but about 1/3 of the way in both my wife and I kept smelling a funny odor. It was coming from one of the other diners at another table. The manager sensed something was wrong and immediately came over. I explained about the smell and he immediately moved us then and there. I don't know many places that would have picked up on our discomfort that quickly. A+"

  • "The exterior weathered look makes for a pleasant surprise on entering. The room has a mature charm. The tables are far apart for private and confidential business discussion. The food and service is on par with the best the city has to offer . The staff is attentive and welcoming."

  • "The waiter described the specials and two of us chose the "rack of lamb". The lamb was crusted with an overpowering horseradish breaking and deep fried. Neither were in the description. I took 1 bite it was so terrible. When I asked the waiter why he didn't mention the horseradish, he argued with me that there wasn't horseradish that it was a Dijon mustard. After checking with the kitchen he came out & apologized that he was wrong. Still not inclined to take the meal off the bill. Instead of taking it off the bill, he chose to let me leave hungry & angry. Food overall was mediocre at best & unless you have a lot of disposable money - don't bother. Will never go again & will let everyone I know not to waste their money there."

  • "I took an older lady as my guest for dinner. I had to go catch a plane, so we each ordered a starter instead of an entree, all of which was delicious. Even though we ordered relatively little, EVERYONE was extremely accommodating and gracious. Also, everyone was smiling and friendly. Excellent and reasonably priced wine list.."

  • "We had a lovely dinner a few nights ago . Ravioli was delicious. We had it two ways,. Entrees were also delicious. Pork and Osso Bucco. Both delicious. Good bottle of Italian wine too! Looking forward to our next visit when we return to NYC."

  • "Our experience at Da Umberto was disappointing given the great reviews it receives. The best part was the atmosphere, which is nice and relaxing. The menu choices sounded interesting, but the food was mediocre at best (since we shared dishes, we tried quite a few different things). The service was friendly but a bit agressive. The server tried to get us to order more; the busser tried to remove dishes before we were finished. This included a $16.00 (!) glass of wine which was quite ordinary. I was looking for a nice neighborhood restaurant with great food where you could carry on a quiet conversation. Da Umberto is relatively quiet by NY standards, but I'm afraid I'll have to keep looking!"

  • "Everything about da Umberto was perfect, from the cocktails to the antipasto to the wine and entrees. Mostly we ordered the items our waiter recommended. Really loved it."

  • "Wonderful experience. Busy night, but the service was impeccable. They have several waitstaff attend to each table and they do it quietly. The appetizer specials, an arugula salad, and a spicy calamari were wonderful. The entrees ravioli stuffed with artichoke and a pesto, mascarpone cheese sauce was delightful. The roast pork was beautifully cooked, They were busy, but did not rush us. Can't wait to go back."

  • "This place is like eating at El Morocco. Food ok but expensive, but the scene is a hoot. Business folks on expense accts and some Gambino family members. Waiters try hard to up sell. When they offer specials ask for prices. Veal chop sounded good until he reluctantly mentioned that it was $60. But do dress up a little and see what NYC was like 50 years ago."

  • "Da Umberto is the jewel in Chelsea's crown. Amazing food, impeccable service and all done with a friendliness that convinces you that you are welcomed with open arms. The food is sublime and needs to tried."

  • "Only complaint is the waiter was very pushy about what we should eat, the amount and the ordering of wine. It was lunch and we were there for business."

  • "A bit pricey, though. Overall a good experience. Staff was attentive and pleasant."

  • "While seated having my supper I was wondering why the service staff was rushing around looking to meet a deadline. Diners like myself will enjoy this experience more if they would casually slow the pace down and let the diners enjoy the moment. The restaurant was not fully committed in fact it was half full. Why would the service be rushing around so as to rush the diners out. It was not necessary. Needless to say it made it not so pleasant experience."

  • "We loved dining at Da Umberto. We had a very early reservation due to having to leave for a show, and were the first diners of the evening. Lots of wait staff, and our waiter Tudor was very attentive and sensitive to our having to dine quickly, kept the pace moving, but not annoyingly too fast. The food was spectacular, and the kitchen so accommodating. We told Tudor we planned to share the pasta course, and he had the kitchen plate our portions accordingly. The lamb risotto was a special, should be on the menu every day! Dover Sole was melt-in-your-mouth! Yummy desserts, don't miss the Panna cotta perfection!"

  • "My wife and I had dinner at Da Umberto many years ago and loved it but for whatever reason had not been back on previous trips to NYC. We corrected that on this trip and the experience was fantastic in every way. The veal chop was magnificent and the Cornish game hen was the best I have ever eaten. We love the neighborhood feel of a family owned place and eating with locals who know their way around. I won't let years pass again before returning to Da. Umberto."

  • "The restaurant has a lovely space, the coat check person and the bartender were very nice, and the food was delicious. But multiple members of the waitstaff not just offering but pushing everything from more appetizers to bottles instead of glasses of wine to dessert was a turnoff. I'd probably go back just for the short ribs & polenta though!"

  • "Unfortunately the today's special fish (flounder?) dish was not only very expensive (more than $50) but also it wasn't special. Also the filet mignon stake was disappointing and the spinach was salty. Just both dishes had a huge portion. The soup was pretty good though. The atmosphere Is good but we wouldn't go back there for eating."
