Diner Reviews
  • "Cute, bubbly, sweet waitress. VERY sloooow service but empty restaurant. Crashing dishes constantly - enough so we are STILL joking about it. Rustic French, but no bread and butter with dinner. Many things cold to lukewarm. Water not watched. This was Saturday night! Music great, empty bar. Chef funny, friendly, interested but sitting at the bar as we left at 930....Saturday....could this be the problem? Lamb shanks seemed boiled rather than braised. Mushroom soup was creamed in a blender with no indication it was rustic wild mushroom. Froi Gras sautéed to a crip served with awful toast points. My thought - somebody needs to really care about food quality, training the staff. This place COULD be hot, hot, hot."

  • "There was no bartender on duty and a woman from the kitchen who had no knowledge about drinks was forced to fill our orders. We led her through, and the drinks turned out ok. However, it was not the best situation at $11.oo per drink"

  • "Every time I was in Chicago in the past few years, I would drop by to Cyrano's for a nice relaxing dinner. I took a couple of colleagues there a few days ago for an authentic country French dinner and was not disappointed at all. In fact, I think the food has gotten even better than before. I ordered the halibut and it came out medium done, just the way I liked it. The waiter was very polite and attentive. If a relaxing French dinner is what you crave for, go to Cyrano's. Oh, don't forget their homemade bread and Pâté. "

  • "Invited friends and family for my wife's birthday. They had a great time. Food was great and service was exceptional, compared to the negative reviews I read. Had a good time and they had live jazz music. They have 2 floors very nice. I had a steak and was delicious. "

  • "The food we had (fois gras, duck breast and confit, lamb shank) was reasonably good [although I think I make better duck at home], however it took forever to come. The fois gras arrived 45 minutes after we ordered, and the main courses after another 45 minutes or so - this in a restaurant that was almost empty. The waitress was very apologetic, and she comped us a baguette with butter and mustard and two desserts to compensate, but it was a very long evening."

  • "The ambiance is perfect and the chef is delightful. But, the food left a little to be desired and the waiter was woeful. Terrible interpersonal skills which unfortunately, can really affect the dining experience. "

  • "This was our first visit to Cyrano's and we will put this restaurant on our list to return to. We had the chicken pate and the beet salad to start which were both excellent! For the main courses, I had the salmon which was melt in your mouth good, and he had the steak frites which he enjoyed. We did get a side of the potatoes au gratin which were another one of those dishes you hope will be as good as it sounds and it actually was! We will be going back again!"

  • "We had a new waiter who should have been following someone still as he didn't know the menu. I have worked in the service industry for a long time so I am more forgiving of new waitstaff but it seemed as the new waiter was thrown in without any training. The cocktails were also not good at all. Drinks were room temperature and should have been chilled and bubbly. I would just play it safe and recommend the wine. I burnt my arm on the escargot plate. I was never told it was even hot even though I should have known better. The best part was the live jazz music and the halibut special. For a romantic night out I would suggest going elsewhere. I don't think this restaurant is going to be around too long."

  • "Being French, I know French food. I have tried many French restaurants in the city and Cyrano is the best so far. The cuisine is authentic and cook to perfection. This restaurant has been around for over 15 years and more people need to try it. The steak and frites was the best piece of meat I have had in a long time. The meat had no grizzle or piece of fat or nerve. It was cooked just the way I ask. My friend had the salmon and he agreed that this was the best salmon he ever had. It was poached. To start we had the charcuterie plate and it had some of the best pates. They have live music on Fridays and Saturdays in the lower level. If you have never had French food, try Cyrano's Farm Kitchen, you won't be disappointed."

  • "The cabaret scene downstairs was delightful. Our waitress was very nice, but the busboy was in training, and was clumsy, awkward and a bit unfortunate. Too bad. I understand everyone has to train, but I suggest the server warn us, and request our patience, rather than just subject us. The food was excellent, except for the rabbit, which was grisly. Also too bad as the other courses were delicious and expertly prepared."

  • "Authentic little french bistro tucked into a busy Chicago neighborhood. True dishes to southwest France. Owner / chef was very sweet and attentive, he kept making sure everything wad what we expected and happy with the flavors. Very very delish food, amazing celery root soup and the best sweetbreads I've ever had. The only rhing that made the evening not so great was the servers ability to take care of a patron. Seemed like he was simply filling in for restaurant in a pinch, completely forgot one course and didn't know how to take off bill. I have raved about the food to a few pepple but not the service. Sorry"

  • "The selection of meat and pate was pretty extensive and delicous. With a glass of wine and nice bread, it would make a great lunch!"

  • "This was a special event in memory of Charlie Trotter. There were 9 chefs in total that prepared various courses and spoke of their experience working in the Trotter kitchen. Very special."

  • "My wife and I had a wonderful Valentine's dinner at Cyrano's Farm Kitchen. We were lucky to have scheduled an early dinner (6pm). Apparently the restaurant had a booking issue and there was a 2 hour (?) wait for later diners. Food was excellent and our server was a fun young man that added to our experience. The jazz was a cherry on top. We will go back sometime soon."

  • "Remains a favorite, gracious service, seriously good food (on a cold night how can you pass on cassoulet?). A pleasure to share time with the family that are the Durands."

  • "I made reservations for 8:15 on Valentine's Day. When we arrived at 8:10, the hostess told us that we were about four parties ahead of us and she encouraged us to have a drink at the bar. We waited at the cramped bar for 1 hour and 15 minutes, and our name still hadn't been called, so we left. This was extremely poor management of their restaurant."

  • "Always good to dine with Chef Durand. Found an exception 1998 BDX and worked backwards wit the menu - steak frite and foie gras. All very good, attentative service, and a very good jazz trio to entertain. Highly recommended."

  • "We'd had lunch at Cyrano's Riverwalk cafe and really enjoyed the food and service. And the same transferred to their Farm Kitchen on Wells too! We sat in the cabaret and enjoyed wonderfully prepared food, and heard great jazz from Lady T and band. Really enjoyed our visit."

  • "My wife and I went to an early dinner before a show on Valentine's day and had a very enjoyable time. The Bistro room had a jazz quartet playing and they were excellent, both musically and with their engagement with the room. The food was superb. The server seemed too busy or spread thin, as we waited with empty glasses for 20 minutes and the courses came very sporadically (4-course prix fixe) which was a bit unfortunate, but another server saw us getting slightly distressed and stepped in to bring us a new round of drinks."

  • "Food was typical of Cyranos: good pates and rillettes; OK/good mains. But as with previous visits, the servers were painfully uninformed. Ex: from the latest visit my dining companion was told that pinot noir was a sweet wine; my glass of chardonnay, "is a seriously oakey wine." (It's not and I knew that, being familiar w/the vineyard.) He wasn't the only server having difficulties; there were other tables experiencing the same with another server (who, incidentally brought us the wrong entrees, and then insisted that they were the correct ones). Altho not really expensive, I can't recommend it any longer; the food just doesn't offset the ineptitude of the wait staff."

  • "Had reservations for valentines day and we were told the minimum wait was 45 minutes in a restaurant that was way too hot and shoulder to shoulder people. No thanks!"

  • "Went for valentines day. Promised music and Champagne with 4 course meal. Food was very good but music and service disappointing. When we arrived music warming up; played maybe half an hour and never came back. The music was very good but no return was disappointing - Slow service so we were there 3 hours. Slow service likely due to mob of Valentines day and would have been okay but lack of promised music just made it disappointing"

  • "Had Valentine's Day reservations for second year. This one was quite disappointing. Everything was hectic, confused, and not well done. The service was mediocre at best--I believe the facility was overbooked. It took about 15 minutes after being seated for the waiter to take drink orders. The food was warm for all courses that should have been hot. The corker was waiting over 20 minutes to get our coats--the coat check room was unattended until I pointed this out to the reservation counter hostess. There were five couples waiting in a very small hallway to get their coats. Waiters coming from the kitchen had to navigate through the maze of people in that hallway. As mentioned previously--everything seemed quite chaotic and disorganized."

  • "I had to wait an hour to be seated even though I had a reservation and arrived a few minutes early. The restaurant seriously overbooked. It was a terrible experience. I will never return."

  • "We were excited to go to Cyrano's, but the restaurant was clearly not equipped for the numbers of diners on Valentine's Day. We ended up being there for FOUR hours - the first hour of which was spent waiting to be seated past our reservation time. And then it was 45-60 minutes between each course, and hard to find our waitperson to bring more wine, water, etc. It seemed that all of the diners were having a similar experience, and the complaining was open conversation in the room. The food was very good, although the waitperson tried to bring our main course before our salad/soup - we almost took it, though, worrying that we might never see it again. A manager was coming around asking diners if they had had their main dish yet or not."

  • "You should go. Maybe you went years ago. Maybe you've driven by a zillion times and never stopped. Maybe you thought it looked quaint but then went to GT almost across the street. Really. You should go."

  • "I seems Cyrano's decided to "scale down" on portion sizes for the so called 3 course menu (Travelzoo voucher). It was my 3rd time this winter using the Travelzoo voucher, and my goodness, ot was dissapointing. My salmon portion was about 3 ounces, my friend's was even smaller at about 2 ounces. A cat would have left hungry too, not just a human being! Unbelieveable... Plus, my red beet salad had raw (or semi cooked) beets in it, I barely touched it. Then, to finish off, they gave us 2 mini creme brulees to share... Left starving. I'm 130 lbs healthy woman, go to the gym 5 times a week - what they gave us would probably have left a toddler hungry... Will not come back."

  • "The Barrel Room downstairs had a small seating, low lights and live music. This evening was a guitarist and a singer. It was a nice addition to the great meal on a cold snowy night. The mussels were so popular that we missed out, but we enjoyed the beet salad and the French onion soup. My companion enjoyed his salmon and I enjoyed the cassoulet with all its different meats. My companion was not interested in dessert, but he ended up eating more than half of it."

  • "I chose Cyrano's in an attempt to find a restaurant that could handle a large group. The restaurant was VERY kind in accommodating for my party when i had to increase the reservation twice. The interior decor gave the restaurant a nice French countryside feel, and the lighting set an nice intimate tone. As for the food and service, I was very impressed both with the selection, the quality of the food, and most importantly the service. We had one server to handle all the orders of our 11 person party. Our server was both polite, patient, and very organized with how he approached our ordering. Finally, the bill was acceptable given the quality and amount of food. I would definitely return to this venue."

  • "Cyrano's is a wonderful restaurant with great food and great ambience, however, I would NOT recommend trying the restaurant using a Travelzoo coupon. Using this coupon means that you dine in the basement, not the main floor with the white covered table clothes and fireplace, which is part of the charm of dining there.. Although the food was still great, the waiter who said "hey guys what will you be ordering this evening" and the cramped confines of the basement, did not lend itself to the best dining experience. We have eaten at Cryano's several times in the last few years and will continue to dine there, but not in the basement again!"

  • "Went on a cold and snowy night, so the crowd was light. Excellent food, I think a little more innovative than the typical French bistro. Affordable wine selection. Met the owner who was very cordial and personable. Would go again."

  • "Awful weather in CHicago with snow and wind, but a really memorable dinner... very good food, exceptional bottle of old French red... and a wonderful meal spent with Didier himself. This is a very good restaurant... the pate in a jar is wonderful, and the steak frite was as I remember it in France. The meal evoked wonderful memories for me, who can ask for more than that? This is non fussy food and dining at its best. Well done."

  • "Cyrano's Farm Kitchen has been around a long time, so we had kind of forgotten about it. Went on NYE and it was absolutely wonderful. Absolutely delicious. Absolutely farm fresh, best ingredients. Great flavors, not overdone ~ trendy, just instead, just very authentic French deliciousness. Had two VERY Good bottles of Champagne. If you've never been, or its been a while, go and enjoy yourselves there."
