Award Winning Chef Nicholas Figel introduces destination quality International Cuisine to Highlands, NC.

In the Cyprus open kitchen, we take our inspiration from peasant foods and traditional cuisines from around the world. We hand harvest our vegetables and shop the ethnic markets to deliver authentic and traditional International flavors.

We feature a unique regional menu, written and executed each day in the Cyprus kitchen, always by hand, and always using time honored, traditional cooking methods.

We consumed a lot of food and the standouts were the pork belly beignet, tamarind ribs (again), and the lavender ice cream sandwich. I had a chance to talk to Nick, the owner, and he is quite happy with the new location. This restaurant will soon be Highlands hot spot of the season. Congratulations Nick!"

But regret to report the new location has problems with noise level, bouncing floor, open windows with shades blowing, and tables so close it was like a community conversation to both sides. And we missed the flamboyance of the food preparation area with the bar area. We will go back as the food preparation and presentation are worth any other issues."

  • "Cyprus has recently moved to this new location, and unfortunately, has spoiled the dining experience. The food is excellent, and the diverse menu the most unusual and interesting in town. However, the dining room is very noisy, the lighting too bright and the decor unattractive. They even play loud annoying music! We escaped to the deck to dine, but as it became dark, could not see our food or the check, as there is no lighting! We requested a candle for our table, and they brought a small tealight. If they can address these problems, they will once again be our favorite Highlands restaurant."

Previously it was a hidden gem known mostly to locals and their guests, but with the new location the popularity can only increase. The only concern would be for those requiring a handicap entrance that cannot negotiate the stairs and are unaware of the "back door" accessibility. Sure adjustments must be under consideration. With it's popularity for outstanding food and service, reservations are a must"

  • "Thankfully when we arrived we were able to have a table on the patio. It is extremely noisy inside. Not a good place to relax and enjoy talking with friends. We also had to ask for a tablecloth. This was a Saturday night. Thot they would automatically do that. There are other restaurants in town that provide a better atmosphere. Probably would not go back. Too bad since food was excellent."

  • "After dining at the original location for years, I was excited to try the new location. The in-town setting is fresh, youthful, energetic, creative, and the food is original and surprising. All freshh and flavorful. Can't wait to go again and will continue to try it as they complete the outside bar, and inside kitchen bar. Watching the kitchen is one of my favorite seating areas. My only concern is the the new location will make it harder to find a table now that it is easy walking distance from the main hotels in town. Congrats Nick! Terrific move."

  • "More of everything. Some hits were local produce featured along with some old favorites. But the formerly outstanding calamari is now overly battered and undercooked. Banal brown sauce on the steak and frites needs to go, but the steak was cooked to perfection. Wild salmon was over manipulated with glaze but cooked properly. Local maker salad was dressed perfectly and was the star of the meal. Red wine standing at room temp is a real non starter in the new place, and no way to chill?"

Others around us seem to have great experiences as well. Our waiter was well trained, even better than some of our favorite places in Atlanta (we had him pick some dishes for us...nailed it). The food to value ratio was good, as well. They seated us early and were appropriately attentive throughout the night."

We had to ask several times to have the music turned down so we could hear each other. Asked to be moved to another table away from the speakers but were told all were reserved. Shrimp served in a martini glass looked great but is difficult to eat in that presentation. Still working on the outdoor eating which will be great when finished."

  • "Nick continues to amaze with the best food made from the freshest ingredients. We both loved the old restaurant but the new place on main street blew us away. Nick and has staff continue to make the best food possible and the care they puts into each dish shows. We will continue to come here every time we have the opportunity and are looking forward to the return of the International menu. All of our friends and family rave Cyprus as well and we can not wait to bring more people to this restaurant. If you are looking for a place to eat exceptional food in Highlands, Cyprus is the only one that we would recommend. "

  • "Cyprus might need time to iron out some kinks. Have eaten at old location several times & were impressed with authenticity & great flavors of ethnic dishes. First time at new location didn't quite meet expectations. I made mistake & showed up 15 mins. late, was told this was a problem, only 2 sittings, too late for 1st, next 1.5 hrs. later etc. BUT they showed us to a table and despite my expectation that we'd be rushed, it was a leisurely meal, no problems. So why explain all the problems when we were satisfactorily seated and served? I had the Steak & Fries: steak was fine, fries soft and not hot, overall not very French. Husband had chicken w/mango sauce - liked it a lot. We'll be back & hope to build more consistent experience."

I usually order off the special menus so have not tried many of the regular International entrees. This was one of the best chicken dishes I have had. Braulio (?) provided perfect service. "

It was obvious that the renovations were not finished, new staff were not well trained, the overall design and table placement were poor and the ambience was chaotic. I know that Chef/Owner Nick is talented and we hope he will soon recover from this set-back."
