A word from Cypress
Live Jazz? Table-side service? Baked Alaska? You could almost hear the foodies snickering when word got out that CYPRESS Owner Rick Delamain was bringing back old-school restaurant flourishes that had gone out of style along with leg warmers and shoulder pads. Well, guess what: The "80's are back! And CYPRESS is packing em' in to its downtown Walnut Creek location with a combination of Modern French Fare, and yes, some retro glamour pizzazz! "It's just a little bit of a WOW factor," Rick Delamain, who worked at the popular Le Virage in Walnut Creek until it closed in 1996. "I wanted to bring back dining as an experience filled with fun and excitement, instead of just ordering, and leaving. I think our guests enjoy that it is interactive. It's something to remember." So don't be alarmed if you see flames as you walk by the restaurant's sleek glass facade. That's just Delamain & his entourage of Culinary Artisans preparing unique delights for your palette.

  • Great service but bland food

We went here a year ago and had a great experience, this time the food did not live up to the expensive price. My steak was thin and overcooked, the smashed potatoes with crab sounded like an amazing dish but there was no seasoning to make it special. It was just bland mashed potatoes with crab mixed in (generous portion of crab though which was nice). The calamari was good but there was shrimp mixed in that tasted like they had been frozen for a while and had a weird flavor. The wine was good and the wine bar was busy and looked like a fun place to hang out. The waiter and staff were very friendly and attentive, and the manager came over a couple of times to check in and thank us for coming in. It was a nice touch.

Dinner went south when we had to ask for a second glass of wine as they took away the first glasses. 2nd glass did not arrive until after our meal. Waiter's excuse was 'they got slammed." Running around cooking tableside is no longer necessary for the staff at this restaurant. Suggest they rethink this concept and focus more on interesting food and excellent service.

The kitchen staff was apparently shorthanded at the brunch hour, and unfortunately it was evident in our meals. All of our other food quality experiences at Cypress have been excellent, so we think this was simply a fluke.

Our group of 6 adults and one 4 year old had a great birthday celebration at Cypress. The service was excellent; our server paid special attention to our little one and ensured she had her food quickly when she explained to him that she was "starving". The food was very good and worth the price. We were not happy with the oysters and they were quickly removed and taken off our bill; the manager apologized and was extremely solicitious- excellent customer service. Scallops, mussels and crab cakes were all fresh and outstanding! This will be on our list regular restaurants.

I've been to Cypress a number of times and some visits have been better than others. This time the waiter was very personable and attentive. My pork chop was lean and tasty and my friend's steak was tasty even though it was a bit overdone. . I always like having a dinner salad before my entrée, but you either have to split a salad for $24 or order an individual one for $12. But the individual salads are too large and fills you up before your entrée comes. They really should offer a smaller salad for $7 or $8 and offer more of a variety. I had a butter lettuce salad with strawberries and yogurt dressing, but the strawberries were overwhelming and it could have used some cheese, nuts other fruit to make it more interesting.

Disappointed!!! I've had dinner at Cypress and found the food and service excellent. To my surprise, brunch was not at all like my dinner experience. The waiter forgot to place napkins on the table and that was just the start. Although there were only three tables, the service was extremely slow, the mimosa, luke warm and the champagne flat. The coffee was good and the only positive thing I can say about my brunch experience at Cypress. I will definitely not return and will not recommend the restaurant, for brunch, to anyone I know.

A group of us had a nice brunch - made more festive with the $1 Mimosas! Staff was very nice, and the restaurant was quiet early in the day. We were able to relax and have a long, lively conversation without shouting over any noise or music. Food was good and generous, we received a melon salad and beignets gratis. The only negative was that the menu was limited, with no real mix-and-match options -- either you had an eggs Benedict choice with one of a variety of toppings, or French toast -- or there were a few other things. Luckily, our vegetarian friends were happy with ther picks. I bet the chef would have put something else together for them - but a bit more to choose from would be nice.

Took my wife here for her birthday on a Saturday with reservations at 630p. Arrived early to enjoy a few drinks before heading to our table. Wasn't crowded at all but by the time we left it was really picking up. Eric was our bartender/mixologist. He was so great! Pours a GREAT Blood & Sand. Jeff was our server for dinner and he was equally as friendly and attentive as Eric. He was patient with guiding us thru the menu and ready with suggestions based on our tastes. My wife ordered the Scallops and I ordered the Steak. Both were EXCELLENT. All in All....from start to finish....it was a special occasion made even more special with their help. We will be back!

Can't even begin to describe how bad the service was. No wine lists available, brought the wrong food over and over again, blazing sun streaming through windows without shades at dinnertime, etc. Food was pretty good but I preferred the previous menu that was more "true French" than the current eclectic mix. To their credit, when we mentioned the bad service on our way out, the owner graciously sat us down in the bar for free desserts, coffee and champagne.

We went for lunch, for a second time, specifically for the frisee salad with lardons and a poached egg. It took a half hour to get the salad even though we mentioned that we had an appointment. It then came with a FRIED egg, not poached. This is a traditional French salad, not open to 'interpretations' by a chef. It was drowned in dressing and way too many red onions, with not enough frisee. I don't even remember red onions the first time around. It appears that someone else was definitely in the kitchen this day. Oh, and on that note, there were many people walking in and out of the kitchen in street clothes, and we could see kids in there as well. Maybe it was take your family to work day.

Menu was innovative; food incredible. Seared ahi tuna over a watermelon and crab salad was to-die-for. Waiter was friendly, professional, and extremely attentive without ever being annoying or interrupting the flow of our conversation. Caesar salad prepared tableside was a real show-stopper. Loved that the wine and cocktail lists were presented on an iPad, and very much appreciated the purposefully slow and relaxed pace of the meal. Will definitely be back and recommend highly to others.

There wasn't a lot of "French" on the menu, other than the verbiage. 2 of us ordered the Ahi & Crab salad - it was excellent. 1 person ordered a steak - it was bland & tough. Service was disappointing. Our waitress was not attentive. We waited more than 10 min to get a coke and lemonade. Twice I saw her look over at us as if she forgot to bring our drinks, but it took a third time before we got our drinks. We were there for lunch. When we arrived, there was only one person at a table, by the time we left, there were three other tables, so it was not busy. She spent a lot of time talking to some ladies that were sitting over by the piano. Perhaps that is why she was not attentive to us. I would not recommend or return.

Nice place good food but the seating situation puts mid dinning room diners in blinding eye level sun for a good portion of the dinner meal. We tried to enjoy our wine and tartar which both were lovely but it was painful to watch our guests blinded by setting sun. After asking our server a couple times to no avail a secondary server finally listened and hung a table cloth over the unprotected window. I am certain that this is an easy fix and also certain that we were not the first guest to have this problem as there was a different table cloth on another part of the window. Top of the line establishments have the diners comfort and whole experience in mind. That does not seem to be the case at Cypress.

I have dined here before but never had a meal this bad. We had to ask the waiter three times for waters. It was 7:30 and and only our party of four and one other couple in the restaurant. We ordered a bottle of wine and 4 entree's with a couple of side dishes. The waiter had to come back twice to tell us that they were out of the side dishes & they made substitutes to our entrée side dishes without asking first. Meats were tough & fatty. It was two people's birthday's and they said they don't do complimentary birthday desserts, they do gift certificates instead. We ordered desserts to share, and they gave us two gift certificates for $ 25 off. Nice incentive to get people in the door, but that won't be enough to get me to go back.

Went to Cypress after reading reviews - unfortunately, it didn't live up to our expectations. Had gone there for our anniversary so it was a special occasion. Food portions are ample, in fact they are on the larger side. As for taste, bland. I had salmon on orzo with a curry and coconut sauce. I would never have guessed the flavors, couldn't taste curry or coconut. The mashed potato we sent back as that was bland, I think it came out of a box. Wish my husband and I had of gone to the Lark Spur instead!

Was disappointed overall with food, service and ambience. Very noisy restaurant with less than stellar service and just okay food. Not real french food in my mind, more generic type of french food that is not executed very well. The french onion soup had strong dominating flavors that were sweet and not well balanced. Duck was cooked okay but it was on a huge bed of "rice-a-roni" rice and no other vegetable.

Severs seemed really young, which is okay, if they're trained right. Ours seemed to not know menu very well, then a runner slopped mussel sauce all over the table, didn't seem very phased by it, must happen a lot. Didn't get on us but close. Vests were a mess which is unacceptable if restaurants provides, they need to keep that and extra shirts on hand and inspect. It's a bright restaurant and that was very unappetizing. They were very accommodating. Chef/owner was fawning over table next to us but did not seem to notice anyone else including us. We'll possibly try them again, but no hurry due to issues. Food was really good.

The food was excellent! We had 10 people and everyone loved their dish. We had the Ceasar salad, Salmon, NY Steak (cooked to perfection at the table by Jose), Grilled Ahi and the delicious Banana Foster cooked at the table to finish the meal was out of this world! The meal sizes are more American than French, the food more California than anything. Very tasty. The big difference is the table side prep of the various offerings. We enjoyed our dinner at Cypress. Having just returned from two weeks in France, we needed another "fix" of French food and Cypress did not disappoint. It is truly food fit for a Francophile. The room is a bit noisy and the service is good although at times a bit too attentive (we're not in a hurry; it's Saturday night for crying out loud!). Super nice hostess. Accomodating waiter. Table side Caesar salad delicious. Steak tartare amazing. Mac n cheese delicious. Fried Brussels sprouts fantastic. Skip the fried calamari, it was so greasy it was dripping on the table leaving grease stains. Gross. Not a fan of the cocktails, I've had better Moscow mules. Stick with wine. The crab and watermelon salad had potential but too much crab and portion way too large. 2 of our party of 5 arrived late and it was no problem. I am looking forward to trying the salmon Napoleon and Cobian fish. Very chic and stylish little restaurant with piano bar. Thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

Went for Walnut Creek Restaurant Week 2013. My wife and I both got the starter salad which was supposed to have shaved vegetables in it, but we didn't find any. It was a spring mix with decent dressing. Mains were flat iron in red wine reduction and Cornish hen over risotto. The steak was good; the reduction sauce was amazing. Cornish hen wasn't really seasoned perhaps to let the risotto stand out but it was just too bland for me. The risotto itself was good, but too cheesy for my liking. Creme Brulee for dessert was okay. Dark Chocolate Tart was very tasty and served in an oreo crust which was an awesome touch in an upscale joint. Service was very good to excellent. Food was overall fair to good but expected more...
