Diner Reviews
  • "Initially discovered the restaurant based on a review in the Arizona Republic and then went to their website to review the menus and wine list. Originally planned to do the Thursday night date night special but quickly changed our mind after reviewing the full menu. Gino Calabro did a superb job answering our questions, making recommendations and pairing wines with the food. We cannot say enough positive about the food! DO NOT leave the restaurant without having the gnocchi!"

  • "Great food. Pricey but we had a Living Social prixe fixe dinner for two deal so it was gentle on our wallet because of the coupon. Biggest problem is the noise level. It's a very loud place. But the staff was wonderful and very attentive. Our server, Gino, was a hoot. He's a terrific waiter."

  • "This was our first visit and the very first impression was entering to an un-attend hostess stand. The hostess ran in behind us from outside, where she was obviously smoking because the odor trailed in with her and all the way too our table when she seated us. (This couldn't have been more un-appetizing.) Our waiter was great and the courses were very good. We ordered a creme brûlée but when it arrived the hard-shelled caramelized sugar top was anything but crisp, instead it was gummy and the entire dessert was warm (it should be server cold). After a couple of small bite it was abandoned."

  • "We purchased the internet special dinner for 2 from deal chicken. I had hoped for a good meal. What we got was a great meal wonderful tasting high quality food, and attentive service. Will definitely go back"

  • "We really enjoyed all the food. The ambience is a bit strange. Not busy at all. To bad, the food is truly excellent. The bar area has a better vibe. Probably request to sit there next time."

  • "We had an internet coupon to try the place. I didn't love how suddenly the price fixe menu was boiled down to VERY few options, and the only appetizers were raw, with NO substitutions. My husband's Rapini had a burt taste to it {HORRIBLE}, I loved the lobster ravioli, the oysters and carpaccio were OK, but I didn't really want to try raw. The wedge salad was yummy, but small. The singer was driving me insane by the time we left. We liked the idea of Cuttlefish, but I don't think we'll go back."

  • "Used a Living Social coupon. Food was good, but not near the stated value of $182. More like $130. The menu for the deal was extremely limited. Appetizer was either oysters or beef carpaccio. Not everybody eats raw fish or beef. We eat oysters, so it was ok for us. The waiter didn't bother to tell us that we were given two types of oysters either. Instead of two shots of Limoncello they gave us a Mandarin Orange liquor. The problem with that is that my wife hates anything orange. Additionally, I had asked for cheese for my pasta and the waiter said that cheese would ruin the taste of the dish. Really? I grew up in an Italian household and we put Pecorino Romano on all our pastas. It enhances the taste of the pasta. Not worth a return visit."

  • "Oysters were freash and the food and wine was outstanding!! The food is so rich and flavorful you can tell it is all made from scratch and comes from a vast knowledge on how to cook the real Italian way!! Gnocchi is to die for!!!"

  • "Have to be honest and start by saying we only had oysters. That's all I can base the review on. That said, the oysters were what I expected, cold and fresh. A little bit of shell in a couple of them. Cocktail sauce was just...GROSS. Hands down worst I've ever had. Tasted like cheap thick tomato sauce. We had planned to stay for dinner, but there was NOTHING on the menu that either my husband or I wanted to try and this was our first time in! Nothing stuck out as promising and I was expecting seafood dishes at a place called Cuttlefish-I was surprised to see so much pasta. Oyster bar motorcycles were VERY cool and comfortable-cuts into seating though if you were with a big group. Server was nice, but stumbled over specialing us..."

  • "Nice renovation of the old Scottsdale McCormick and Schmick location, but the food is mediocre. I had the Halibut and it was two smaller pieces vs a filet, and overcooked. My friend had the Salmon and it was fair. Fishy. That and two undistinguished salads (no beverages, sides or desserts) and the bill was $90. Add "poor value" to the list. A real disappointment. They need to rethink their menu. The place was pretty empty--not suprisingly."

  • "Best dish I've ever eaten. The sauce the halibut is flaky and succulent."

  • "I really wanted to try Cuttlefish because I've had such wonderful seafood during my many trips to Italy. This was truly a bad eating experience. All four courses were poor for both my wife and myself. The resturant was nice about it and provided for a complimentary meal if we should return but I doubt if we will go back."

  • "Cuttlefish is a beautiful looking restaurant that reimagined the space vacated by McCormick and Schmick's. I personally didn't care for the look of the raw bar with motorcycle seats but the restaurant itself is sleek and modern without seeming cold. The food we ordered was perfectly cooked and presented. I had the salmon that was served with capers and roman artichoke hearts. It was delicious and my husband has snapper that was served with a goat cheese and vegetable tart. We split an order of lighter than air gnocchi. The service provided by head waiter Gino was friendly and professional. This restaurant couldn't be better. One of the best in the Scottsdale area."

  • "I'm really torn on Cuttlefish because I thought the food was actually very good! However, the portion sizes were very small for the price. For my $34 Lemon Prawns and Lobster Ravioli dish, I literally got 3-4 prawns (albeit, large prawns) and 3 ravioli, and that's it. The sides were also very small. This is unfortunate because, again, the food was actually pretty tasty. I recommend going on Thursday night when they have a "Date Night" menu and two people can eat for $49. That's a much better value that the money we paid on a Friday night. The restaurant itself has a great, open décor. I love that they have Vespa scooters at the bar to serve as bar stools. Very cute! Service was also good."

  • "I rarely rave, but from the moment we entered Cuttlefish, we were "taken care of." We were early for dinner, 6:30, so we could enjoy jazz at Remington's. The room was airy and light with large windows and a perfect temperature: finally, a restaurant where you don't need a coat to wear over your summer dress. Our waiter called me by name at least 5 times, even tho it was our first time; it felt neighborly and intimate immediately. Pinot Grigio by the glass was excellent and the same price we've paid nearby for far lower quality. We split the CA albacore salad, which could be a fabulous lunch by itself. The sole was delicious and light, the scallops seared perfectly!. The scallops' pasta was rich enough for dessert! Loved it all!"

  • "After raring if this reataurant and chef, I was expecting more. If the chef is hoping to get James Bears awards, he has a lot of work to do. Clams were extremely gritty and the pasta was very under seasoned. The sole puttanesca had decent flavor however it was thrown on the plate like a blob. Fingerling potatoes had no seasoning. Best thing I ate was the truffles gnocchi. Server was very in attentive he had too many tables as he was the only one on. Had to ask for drinks as we'll as refills ."

  • "But that was our first and last visit. The restaurant seems confused about what it wants to be. At the door, there's an oyster bar with seats made from scooters. Seems like a fun idea but totally out of place with the rest of the decor. Also, when you're seated at an oyster bar, you might want to cozy up to your date. These scooters don't allow for that. The lighting was way too bright and most importantly, the food was totally unremarkable. If I'm being honest, I can't believe this place will last too long. There are too many other far better places to eat. It's just not good enough. I have no idea how this place made PHX mag top Italian spots, (May 2014 "Italian Food Hoods). My husband and I both had to take Pepto before bed."

  • "My friend and I dined at Cuttlefish recently and enjoyed the experience very much. The service was fantastic, as was the food. We started off with mussels and then soup and salad (I absolutely loved the soup - might be the best I've tasted!), and my friend loved the salad. The entrees were excellent (salmon and scallop dishes). By the end of the meal we had absolutely no room for dessert, but we would have loved to try it. The oyster bar is definitely worth a visit, too!!! "

  • "The food was excellent, especially the shrimp and grits. Loved the Alaskan Halibut as well! We were there Memorial Day weekend and apparently there were some staffing issues. The staff was very nice and did the best they could, but dinner still took over 2 hours. Will definitely go back again."

  • "We tried Cuttlefish during restaurant week because of the menu for the week and we had not been there before. The food was good - oysters, pasta and the desserts. Our server did the best he could but on this evening 2 of four servers did not show up. Dinner took two hours but the time passed pleasant enough. "

  • "We took our friends to try a new place in Scottsdale - Cuttlefish. Service was simple plain terrible... we waited for water, waited for wine and asked 4 times to get bread. Food was average but felt really heavy. It is an expensive restaurant and we expected so much better. For these prices you can find many much better restaurants. Our friends said the same thing. We would never go back. "

  • "we were not impressed by this restaurant. the bread looked and tasted like it had been sitting under lights for too long and the prawns were breaded beyond recognition. the server did not even remark that two of us left most of our prawns on the plate. we will not be going back. one redeeming feature was the pork belly appetizer - it was outstanding and that was good since it is just about all I ate."

  • "Loved the lobster ravioli and the panna cotta. Didn't enjoy the lemon prawns that much, but found out later that we could have gotten them grilled instead of fried."

  • "We brunched here Mother's Day, it was wonderful! So looking forward to Arizona Restaurant Week menu, but were very disappointed. Appetizers (wedge salad and pork belly) were good. But we sent both main dishes back -- shrimp in lemon caper sauce and lobster ravioli was cold, and sole puttanesca was devoid of flavor. Neither had a single caper on the plate! Second time around was better, but puttanesca was still very bland (altho sole was cooked nicely). The batter on the shrimp was not great, but the lobster ravioli was quite good. Desserts were simply adequate. The chocolate mousse cake had delicious creamy frosting and mousse, but the cake was dry. The tiramisu was uneven -- lots of rum in some bites, and none at all in others."

  • "Chef and staff should be embarrassed putting out the food they did. The food did not match the description on the menu! They need to learn what a white bean ragout means, not a small handful of beans thrown on a plate. Frozen desserts, way over cooked fish and bland, bland, bland!"

  • "We discovered this restaurant by reading Open Table, we were looking for something different . Well this is different. It had the BEST seafood we have had in a long time. The staff were knowledgable and helpful. Plus because it was Tuesday we got 40% off our wine. We already have a reservation for next week. This is now in our top few restaurants in Scottsdale. "

  • "Went during restaurant week and had the $40 prix fixe. Oysters were delicious with blood orange mignonette and the freshest cocktail sauce I lve had. Branzino with Putannesca was incredibly light and flavorful. That being said they tried to hurry us along which is very irritating to me."

  • "This was a one and done for me. Friendly staff and neat atmosphere but I wasn't impressed with the food. Over priced small portions. I'd recommend someone to try it out but it's a been there done that place for me. "

  • "Our first time at Cuttlefish was excellent. Our server was knowledgeable and very friendly. We ate from the Restaurant Week prix fixed dinner which was unique and beautifully presented. I glanced over the regular menu and would difinitely want to try some of the offerings there. My martini was perfect and those in our group of 8 that had wine were very pleased as well. Bread was delicious and the table was well cleared between courses and glasses filled as needed. "

  • "The food was great! Their Pork Belly was the best I ever had. Friendly hostess, beautiful Oyster bar with a great selection of oysters. Fun atmosphere. The fifth star should come if they can speed up their service. By far, the slowest service I have had in years in a Scottsdale restaurant. Maybe it was because of Restaurant Week, but even so, extremely slow. Fortunately, the food was good enough to make the wait worthwhile."

  • "Had a great time for restaurant week here! The food and drinks were amazing. Our waiter was great and suggested things that we should get the next time that we came in. Will definitely be back for some oysters and to try some of the items on the "normal" menu! "

  • "such great food. good people around you and it was quite busy the night we were there. we even forgave the fact that our dinners did not come out at the same time. it's just that good!"

  • "I have been to Cuttlefish for both lunch and dinner with different friends each time. Everyone has always been pleased with what they have ordered and found the service excellent."

  • "We have enjoyed the restaurant before but it has really changed. The crudo plates were gone. The lemon prawns that went with the restaurant week were terrible. They were supposed to be pan roasted but were breaded and had a strange sauce that made them soggy. It was surprisingly disappointing."

  • "Service was a bit slow and superficial. Food was okay. The beet salad and cuttlefish appetizers were excellent. The main courses were disappointing. The salmon was undercooked and the arctic bouillabaisse was lacking in flavor. The wine selections were satisfactory. All in all, an ok place but one trip was probably enough."
