I really thought the menu lacked very many options. Most sushi places have a ton of rolls to choose from, I enjoy reading them all, to me it is part of the experience, the menu felt weak to me. I also did not like how close we were sitting to the next tables. I mean except for a 12" inch gap on both sides of the table we were eating with other couples. It felt way too close. As far as the sushi, it was good, but not any better than any other sushi I can get for less. Also, the wasabi seemed dry. I couldn't pick it up, it seemed to crumble under my chopsticks.

Current is one of the better places to go in DC on a Saturday night, they have a fairly good wine list and some fabulous cocktails. The sushi is extremely unique and surprising, but I can honestly say my friend and I had a great time there. The only downside is it is a bit cramped and noisy - so I would suggest against going there for a romantic date. This is more a place for friends to drink and for groups to meet up. Overall though everything was great!

Terrible service... Took an hour for sushi for two! Terrible control of temperature and airflow in dining area (constant cold air/drafts from failing to close entry door, combined with high heat in an attempt to compensate for cold air)... Quite uncomfortable.

This was our first trip to Current! Our reservations were for 6:30 Saturday, right as they opened for dinner service. They were just turning on the heat as we walked in and the restaurant was COLD. We asked to be seated away from the drafty door... only to be seated in another drafty location. As we were sitting down, the hostess informed us they were out of 3 of the options listed on the 'specials' menu. (Not a good sign as you start dinner service). We found the sushi to be fresh. The dragon rolls were fab! Everything else was just ok! The hot saki was a perfect way to warm up. Our server was friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, the hostess staff was less than friendly when we asked them to make change for the valet.

The food was excellent. I enjoyed chef's specialties which were more fusion than traditional sushi. The drinks well made, using top shelf liquors. My only complaint was the service, there seemed to be only one waitress for the entire floor. She worked as quickly as she could but we did find ourselves waiting for the next dish a few times. Overall the experience was excellent and I would recommend. Especially good for those just starting to explore sushi.

The sushi was tasty and the sake hit the spot. The happy hour menu was just what the doctor ordered... My brother and I just sat there ordering round after round of rolls and nigiri. The atmosphere is a bit to trendy, swanky, uppity for my tastes, but the food made up for it. I'd go again.

It should be enough to say that the waitress lost my credit card. But, sadly, it's not. Not only did she lose my credit card, she actively avoided me when I asked her what was wrong, saying to give her "a couple more minutes." She had the same response when I asked to see the manager. When I finally summoned the manager, his response was, "I just got here." Eventually, it was my dining companion who found my credit card on the floor. But not until after our wonderful waitress told my friend she (the waitress) was going to have to check my friend's pockets. Comically bad; unbelievably horrible experience.

Not your average sushi bar, but rather an eclectic mix of traditional Japanese food and some American inventions - that asparagus and bacon kishi is a perfect (and delicious) example. The happy hour specials had a nice mix of items - all high quality. Our waitress warned us to only eat a half bite of the wasabi-wrapped shu mai at first, and that was a good call. Very wasabi. The service was excellent.

At a sushi restaurant it's all about the fish. Current's is fine -- I had tuna, hamachi, salmon, eel, all very flavorful and buttery, and a very good wasabi shumai. The decor is kind of trendy but pleasant. Only 3 seats at the sushi bar but ~15 at the regular bar. The thumping-bass "background" music is not a plus. But...it's all about the fish.

  • Outstanding sushi, weak cocktails
    OpenTable Diner Since 2004
    Dined on 10/20/2011
Sushi was outstanding and quality. The martinis unfortunately were not good. Way too sweet and very little alcohol...and $12 is a waste of time. So I drank white whine instead. I love drinking a stiff martini with sushi, but these were pointless. If you come here, get any of the sushi just drink wine because you will be disappointed you wasted money on a martini where all you can taste is the juice. Service was decent, we felt rushed at first but then I think our waittress figured out we weren't in a rush and she left us alone. No hiccups here. Ambiance is nice too and not crowded so easy to talk to your friend across the table!

I can be very hard to please when it comes to sushi but I was pleasantly surprised by Current. They had a great combination of simple, well-executed sushi with quality pieces of fish, with more adventurous rolls that pushed the boundaries without being overbearing. It was a great middle ground for me since I would not consider myself a sushi purist, but I like clean simple flavor combinations. I was also very pleased with the skewers that I ordered. I hadn’t planned on getting anything else but sushi but the aroma in the restaurant and the attractive happy hour price was too much to resist. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience.

Good sushi, but smaller portions and a bit high on the prices. The nigiri was super fresh, and the spicy rolls used nice chunks of fish, not some mayonaisse and fish paste seen in other restaurants. The cocktails were very tasty, but very small... the better bet was the lovely 22oz Sapporos to share family-style as they do in Japan. The decor and ambiance were both excellent. The server was perky and attentive, and we were surprised at the speed in which our orders were prepared and brought out. We would definitely return to have Sushi there if we were already in the area.
