Currant was fantastic! We were
visiting San Diego for my husband's conference, but it was also his birthday so I wanted to take him out before the work really kicked in. I found Currant through Open Table, and was able to read reviews and check out the menu. The food was awesome - I had the duck and he had he had the ribeye - neither of us was disappointed. We both asked for recommendations for the first course based on what we chose for our entrees, and Adrian was able to give amazing selections. If I would have been able to get there more easily from our hotel, I would have gone back to try brunch as well as maybe lunch so I could have eaten outside and done some people-watching. I will definitely be back next time I visit San Diego!"

To be honest, I was disappointed.
I expected something a little more cosmopolitan and with spot on service and food. That you will probably not get. We ordered the Croque Madame. It was way off from a "true" croque, but it was very tasty. Where was the bechamel? When we arrived we ordered a kir. Both the waiter and the bartender were at a total loss, even though they have a kir royale on the menu. A kir is simply creme de cassis with white wine, rather than with champagne, which is a kir royale. Not too complicated, but it was. The management needs to provide more training for the staff. Oh, our Open Table reservation was not acknowledged nor were we properly greeted with eye contact. I would and may go back for another try."

Brought a group of 12. Very
accomdating. Service was a bit slow at first and a few members of my party had to go up and request refills of drinks, etc. Someone also made a comment about how the restaurant was almost empty but the staff was just "standing around". Once we got our food, the service picked up and I was very happy. I would definitely come back here, as would my friends."
Dined on 3/8/2014
what is listed on the menu does
not tell you if spicy or not ....description of what you are really getting is missing information..... Ask for details of what you are ordering. OR be surprised but with pricing of eating out a surprise is not always enjoyable."

Expensive and too noisy. Very good
food but a bit overpriced."

Went for dinner with my husband
and daughters, ages 12 and 13. We all enjoyed the experience, especially the garlic tots! Got a free duck popcorn, which was the low point of the meal. My husband and I enjoyed sampling the interesting and delicious cocktails. The spicy brussels sprouts were wonderful, as was the macaroni and cheese, the croque monsieur sandwich was one of the best I've tasted in this country, the hangar steak was tender and yummy. The hamburger was only ok. All in all, I would definitely go back if I lived closer."

We've been to Currant many times
and we always enjoy it!"

The ambiance was really nice....
Mood lighting, booth and bar stool table seating along with standard table service. Food was really good. Seafood and steaks (French cuisine) Not a lot of food to choose from, but that means they specialize on making the food to perfection! :) we went for Valentines Day around 7:45, the setting was really nice. We will go again!"

This was not my first time dining
at Currant, but it was the first for my date. I was praised for choosing a fantastic place to dine! We were there for dinner before going to see a dance performance at Spreckles Theater and there were a host of other diners present on their way to a show at the Civic. The energy of Currant was high with expectation of the Arts events for the evening. As for the food... Delicious! There was a Prix Fix menu still going from Valentine's Day. We both selected our 3 courses from this menu which included a lovey glass of sparkling wine. Our server was attentive to the schedules of the diners as well. Making sure to check in to insure our arrival to the performances. Definitely will be returning here again."

Everything was fantastic, except
had to sit right next to kitchen door. Minor issue that the quality of food made up for."
Dined on 2/15/2014
Portions were generous, tater tots
were amazing and truffle fries were pretty good. Service was on the slower side with no one else in the restaurant but over all ok."
Dined on 2/4/2014
We wanted to see how this compared
to my favorite, Cafe Chloe. We had great service with a nice atmosphere but the food was just adequate. Steak was a bit tough and the rest of the food was good just not impressive."
Dined on 2/8/2014
Small place but the food is great.
Kinda loud but we are going back. The service and food is worth going back."

Sometimes it is difficult to find
a good place to do lunch, especially downtown. For a restaurant that offers 10% off to those with a Jury Duty badge, this is a pretty nice place to eat. The cauliflower soup was fantastic and the grilled caesar was a nice change from the typical fare. Dining out during Restaurant Week when you are a foodie can be iffy; service isn't always on par (perhaps they are anticipating a lower tip) and the food options are more limited. But I must say, this is one place that I'd return to regardless of whether or not it was Restaurant Week."

Stayed at the Sofia Hotel to
celebrate close friend's birthday and had cocktails and appetizers at Currant American Brasserie before watching a play at the Horton Grand Theater. This restaurant is conveniently located in the lobby level of the hotel, the food and drinks were exceptional. A great place to start the evening's events or stay or enjoy dinner."
Dined on 1/25/2014
We went for Restaurant Week. My
husband had the cauliflower soup and I had the poached pear salad, both were good. For our main my husband had the Croque Monsieur and I had the Rapini Risotto. The Croque Monsieur was good but the Rapini Rissotto was awful, in the menu it is described as consisting of 'charred lemon, mascarpone, pepitas'. What I got was a Rissotto heavy on the red pepper flakes and covered with some sauce that tasted of hot bitter raw garlic. I may as well have chewed a raw garlic clove since that is all I could taste. The service was adequate but the waiter never inquired if the meal was good or not."

This is one of my favorite
restaurants. I love the menu and the it never disappoints. The service was a little slow on my last visit, but everything else was great!"
Dined on 1/23/2014
The food was great, but it was the
service that really stood out. Both our waiter and the bus boy exhibited the perfect amount of attentiveness. Will definitely return."
Dined on 1/20/2014
Nice service, they just changed
the menu and everything was perfect!, starter: the french bread thing is great. Entree: ribeye!,"
Dined on 1/11/2014
The restaurant was pretty loud
with lots of hard surfaces. I recommend they install some sound baffling or sound absorbing materials."

What a wonderful restaurant. The
food is incredible and the wait staff is amazing. I can't say enough about this place. We thought it was superb the first time we went, just my boyfriend and I, and we decided to test them on a group of 10. Blew it out of the water! Drinks were always full, food came out hot and all together, and all our guests were very complimentary. Thanks again Currant! We’ll be back."

First time visiting San Diego; Our
family decided to do something atypical for the holiday. I found Currants online during a search. We were happy with the Thanksgiving menu."
Dined on 11/28/2013
Amazing Mac n cheese! Seriously,
one of my top 5 of all time. Valet parking that's actually less expensive than the lots. Great drinks and inventive bistro classics like the blue crab stuffed avocado or burgers."
Dined on 11/29/2013
So many tv's in there, did not
expect sports bar atmosphere. Food was just ok, not good enough to justify prices. Server was great, though."
Dined on 11/15/2013
We were celebrating two birthdays,
so they were kind enough to give us their lovely private room. It was the perfect space with wonderfully tasty food and great personal service. We will definitely we coming back!"
Dined on 11/9/2013
Food was excellent; service was
fast and the servers were very friendly and experienced. Even the "small plates" are big enough for a meal if you're only slightly hungry, and the entrees are definitely of a good size. I would most definitely be eating here again!"
Dined on 11/10/2013
This place has never disappointed.
It is on our list of places to eat every time we are in San Diego!"

In the heart of "Courthouse Row"
in downtown San Diego, Currant stands out as an upscale place for a lunch time meal. Excellent variety of menu items and always with an excellent daily off menu special. The day of our visit the special was a swordfish sandwich with a choice of salad or fries. Very good. My daughter had a salmon salad which she really enjoyed. Service is very good with food served quickly to accommodate those who need to get back to the office. My wife and I have had dinner there on several occasions usually before attending a show or production at the nearby Civic Center. Also very good."

We had a wonderful night at
Currant. It was a group of five and we requested the "Chefs table" it was so nice! Our waiter was wonderful, he was very attentive and on point with everything. The food was delicious!! Two thumbs up to the chef ;-) I will f Definitely be coming back and would recommend this restaurant. Thank you again for a wonderful experience ;-)"

Mushroom kale farro was absolutely
delish! Hope it stays on menu! Was served with cedar planked salmon....yum!"

I was excited to know this
restaurant was in the confines of the old Pickwick Hotel back in the 1900's. The waiter failed to give us information on any specials or favorite items. The Bloody Mary's were just ok as was the food. I chose the duck hash complete with duck egg and it was very good. My daughter chose the Huevos Rancheros which was appetizer at best. I have another TravelZoo deal for this establishment and I hope it is better than just ok..."

enjoyed everything about it.
excellent service, friendly staff. overall great"
Dined on 9/20/2013
I came in for lunch during
restaurant week. I was very pleased with the service, the food, and the drinks. I was a little concerned that I would be hungry after since I was only getting two items from the menu, but alas... I was full. I mean like, sit back and rub my stomach full! I'll definitely return again for dinner next time."
Dined on 9/19/2013
Tried the restaurant for lunch
during restaurant week. The curly pasta with mushroom was really good, very flavorful. The pasta was cooked just right! Pea soup was pretty good too. The service was a bit slow during the lunch hour, probably because of restaurant week.."
Dined on 9/18/2013
During San Diego Restaurant Week,
a 2/3 course meal is provided prix fixe. The portions were good sized and the presentation was excellent. Didn't try the wine as I don't drink at lunchtime."
Dined on 9/17/2013
Currant American Brasserie, what a
disappointment. They are confused, are you a restaurant or bar. Your music is so loud we could not talk. The space is so tight the servers kept hitting my chair as they passed. The food was less than quality, the duck I ordered was so tough I had to send it back, and the ahi was a loser grade tuna, and had so much caper juice you could not taste the ahi. I would not recommend this place even with a coupon….."
Dined on 9/1/2013
Second time time to Currant
American Brasserie and not dissapointed--food and bottomless mimosas as a great pair! Love the casual ambiance. Will come back next time we're driving down to San Diego (from L.A.)."
Dined on 8/24/2013
Ordered a steak salad and I
couldn't believe the small size of the steak. I don't think it was 3 ounces. I assumed for $17 steak salad at lunch it would be a decent size."
Dined on 8/26/2013
Went here for brunch. The food was
delicious and the staff was very accommodating of my food allergies, which is always appreciated. Also, they have $8 bottomless mimosas which were definitely worth it."
Dined on 8/17/2013
stayed at the sofia Saturday night
and decided to have brunch here Sunday before heading out. Walked in and got seated right away but it took 25 minutes for a server to finally come greet us 10 minutes to finally get a glass of mimosa and another 30 minutes to finally get our food. Had to flag down the waiter to get a refill on our bottomless mimosas several times. Worst experience ever. Never coming back. Good food but not good enough to make up for the bad service"
