Welcome to CUCINA urbana, a casual Italian American Neighborhood Kitchen and Wine Shop located in the heart of Banker's Hill. The menu highlights the cuisines of various Italian regions with a distinct California ‘farm to table’ flair for which the Urban Kitchen Group has become known. Chef Joe Magnanelli is excited to preview his Italian heritage and create dishes that are fresh, simple and seasonal. Items include: antipasti, artisan pizza, pasta and piatti. Enjoy wine by the glass or visit the Wine Spectator award-winning wine shop and select a bottle from over 100 selections at retail price ($8 corkage fee applies). The space features contemporary elements and vintage artifacts creating the feel of a modern Italian kitchen combined with the history and comfort of an old rustic country farmhouse. The atmosphere is on the loud side (having discussed if someone was hard of hearing they may feel frustrated if it's peak time in the dining room). Tables are reservation only, however they have open seating at the bar, a family style table, and a pizza bar. This is a gotta try! "

  • "The ambiance is great and the food is mediocre. San Diegans must be easily impressed. Some items are good but nothing is GREAT. I have had a few different pizzas, the jars and pasta and tasted the burger. Not impressed by any of them. If you want a wonderful italian meal with great authentic and interesting food go to Buono Forchetta. It wasn't a good idea to go to both places in the same week since BF far outweighs this competition. Won't go back unless someone else is stuck on the idea. Happy my meal was paid for!"

  • "I love Cucina Urbana. We took friends for their first time. The polenta, as always, was delicious. We ordered a board, drinks and entrees. The guys had the steak & pok chops and both loved their dishes. My friend had a pasta dish that she ate most of but said she didn't love it because it had peas. The last ime I was there I had the archtic char & loved it so I went for it again. I really should learn not to do that any more because the meal is almost always not as good the second time around. While it was still quite good, the white beans were very noticeably undercooked, which was disappointing. Overall we had a great time though and will definitely be back."

Sara had great recommendations, and she was attentive (but not pushy) and prompt. She knew when to be there and when to blend in. Very impressed. The pear and gorgonzola pizza was delicious and my husband also enjoyed his spicy shrimp pasta. I would definitely recommend Cucina Urbana to anyone who enjoys Italian food.   • "Cucina Urbana has a wonderful menu; in particular it features some spectacular appetizers--the suckling pig is memorable. They have a retail wine shop in the restaurant where you can choose a bottle paying retail prices (not the usual restaurant mark-up) and then an $8 corkage fee--a very good deal. The space is large but it's been arranged into smaller units so it doesn't seem as large as it is."

Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and wine list, was personable and fun to interact with. I would like to include the staff that assisted him in my praise--we enjoyed all of them! I was dismayed to see that the ricotta knudi in sage brown butter was off the appetize menu but the chef was able to deliver--thank you--everyone at the table was able to taste the little delights that I had been telling them about. We shared bites from each others menu choices and yum!"

We ordered the squash blossoms, the arugula and heirloom, the pear gorgonzola and the spicy burnt brussels. Each item was to die for in its own way but the brussels and the blossoms were my favorite. Their spicy sauce for the brussels could be put on anything... Seriously I would have taken a jar home with me. Our server was amazing and attentive even while it was busy. Dishes came out on time and gave us a comfortable amount of space between dishes. Great experience."

  • "I have always heard great things about Open Table from friends, how convenient and how we can build up points (or something like that?) I have never tried it until now. It was super easy, convenient and the day of our event, I received a text to confirm my reservation for 9:15pm. My friends and I arrived a bit earlier than 9:15pm (around 8:45pm), and the hostess was really diligent to seat us earlier than our reservation. She didn't give us a bad attitude like some other restaurants I've experienced. We were all really impressed! The waitress was attentive, food was delicious (although lots of appetizers had the same identical bread as the bread they brought before the meal...so we were a little "breaded-out" by the time our entrees came)."

  • "Pleasant first-time discovery in Banker's Hill area. Empty at 5, full by 6:30 on a Wed. nite. Generous portions. We split the Lasagna and took some home. Roast pig appetizer was wonderful. Service was attentive and helpful. Atmosphere pleasant, but not intimate. Many tempting items on the menu--we will definitely be back. Valet parking and a shuttle to Balboa Park when Cabrillo bridge is open, probably after April 2014. They hold leftovers in refrigerated case at reception desk--a great convenience if you are going to the theater and want to pick up your food afterwards."

I also like the fact that the prices on the wine are priced at market plus a very modest "corkage" fee, which means that the cost is thus extremely reasonable compared to a typical restaurant. You folks should open one of these in San Francisco where I live."
