Diner Reviews
  • "Overall I was impressed with the restaurant. However, this place needs some updates to decor, the carpets looked gross, and I would believe for the amount of money I am spending the ambience could be much better, especially when you are taking your significant other here for an anniversary dinner. I would come again, but it won't be often."

  • "When we arrived the hostess stand was unoccupied. We had to send member of our party into the kitchen before we found the hostess. Yes, it was and early dinner, mid-week but for crying out loud if you're OPEN you should be staffed. The uniform of the busboy and the waitress were both noticeably soiled. Sad, sad, sad for this price range. Food was delicious, wine was excellent."

  • "Food is average, nothing special. Do nor order a mixed drink, they can't make one. They were unable to make a gin martini which is the world's simplest drink to make... Gin, ice, shake, pour. Wine was good. Great difficulty dividing a check."

  • "Did not expect to find off-the-charts Italian in SLC. Seafood was stunning. Delicate, properly cooked, perfectly fresh. Red sauce experience was as good as it gets. White sauces - ditto. Go! This is great Italian!"

  • "Have been coming to SLC since 1980. This is by far one of the best meals I've had the pleasure to enjoy. We had a party of 7, and every person gave rave reviews. From the amazing ceasar salad prepared tableside, to the Cioppino which I had. Service was excellent and our server was open and honest with us. Didn't have dessert as we were all to full. Portions are quite substantial. Highly recommended."

  • "Very solid experience and great food as usual. Would have been 5 stars all around but we were seated by window and it was too cold inside. Our server could also not communicate very clearly with us."

  • "My husband and I were looking to have a romantic meal at a nice restaurant. Although the food was good, it was not spectacular ( other than the barata which was amazing). Our server was either all over us, clearing plates we weren't done with or walking in circles around the restaurant looking angry and bored. We never felt welcome or comfortable, I would not recommend."

  • "We started out great. The ciopinno was mediocre. Others said about the same. The gnocchi was very good."

  • "Based on other internet reviews, we thought we'd give Cucina Toscana a try. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal -- the food was absolutely excellent. Unfortunately once the evening picked up with more and more diners, the noise of dishes being stacked, un-stacked, etc. became so loud, it was a nuisance. We were also very disappointed with the Monsanto Chianti -- although recommended by the waitress, it was near sour and certainly not worth the price. That said, our shared seafood-sampler appetizer, veal and seafood entrees and desserts were excellent!"

  • "My husband and I dined at Cucina Toscana as a late Valentine's Day dinner. The service was excellent, and our waiter was very attentive, friendly and helpful. We shared the Caesar salad and Caprese Salads for appetizers while we waited for our food. The Caesar salad was nothing special, but the Caprese salad with prosciutto was wonderful! My husband ordered a salmon dish that was just okay. I ordered the Ossobucco, which was excellent. For the price, though, the food was nothing too special. For dessert we ordered the $12 crème brulee, which was just awful. I've had microwaveable crème brulee from Costco that was much better, and cheaper! Cucinca Toscana has a romantic atmosphere and gourmet Italian food, but be prepared to pay for it."

  • "This was our second time at this rest. and first under the new mgmt. The service was exceptional. The food was also exceptional. I had the short rib which was perfectly prepared. My wife had the sea bass which was cooked perfectly and the flaOr was as good as any I have tasted anywhere. I would highly recommend this rest."

  • "Everything was excellent from the moment we stepped into the restaurant. We were greeted as we came in and all the staff was very kind. Our server was wonderful. He explained the menu, gave us recommendations and was always on time with refills. He also gave a complimentary refill on an Italian soda that I ordered. The Food was amazing. I'm not sure his position with the company, but Scott came by a couple time to make sure our experience was going well. Great place to go for special occasions."

  • "The sea bass special was outstanding, so was the Caesar salad made fresh at the table! Our server, Elizabeth, took excellent care of us. We brought clients back the next night!"

  • "We have dined at Cucina Toscana several times before the change in ownership. Each time the service, food and ambience was excellent. This time was our first after the change in ownership. The service was bad, no one smiled the food was okay, nothing special and not the same quality. we were placed right next to a large party when the restaurant was empty. The hostess was not friendly. Our waiter was Ben, who did not smile, we had to ask for water, ask if there were any specials. We had to ask to have our order taken. Ask for more water. We couldn't find our waiter and had to ask another waiter to find Ben. This is only the tip of the bad service we received. We spoke to the manager and he blamed everything on Valter."

  • "Unfortunately, I will not be recommending this restaurant to friend, nor will I be going back. The service was horrible (we waited 20 min for a wine list), the food wasn't special, and it felt like the staff was more anxious to leave than to wait on us. Our waitress wasn't knowledgable about the menu and kept misunderstanding our order. Overall, a very poor and disappointing dining experience. It left me shocked that this iconic downtown restaurant is named as a Hall of Famer in SL magazine year after year as it certainly doesn't live up to its reputation."

  • "I have dined at C-T several times in the past, and this was by far my worst experience. The "pasta tour" was ok, but wasn't very warm for freshly prepared pasta. The salad was good, but the entrees also seemed like they had been sitting around a while before being served. All seemed more "generic" and rather mass produced. However, the worst part of the meal was dessert. We ordered 3 items that are almost impossible to ruin, yet they managed to do just that with all 3. The cheesecake had a crust that was thicker than the cheesecake, and was so hard we could barely keep it on the plate when cutting into it. The crème brulee tasted funny (like basil), and the vanilla gelato was icy and very generic as well. Not worth the price!"

  • "Though the prices are not friendly for a true 5 course Italian meal, this place does take us back to eating in Italy. Plan for at least a two hour experience. Fairly descent wine list, but terrific Italian dishes, from Linguine Nere to some Ravioli Formaggi. Great tableside Caesar salad to start the night. Highly recommended (we have been to SLC twice and have been to Cucina Toscana twice) :-)"

  • "Miss the energy that Valter created there. Sauces were too heavy and no flavor."

  • "Food was excellent and a nice selection for all palates. The pastas made daily were wonderful. The sauces that went with each plate were fantastic. A good selection of wine for all food parings."

  • "Although I have been to Cucina Toscana several times but it had been awhile, the food was as good as ever and consistent. The notable part was how willing the staff was to our changes in party size and location within the space. We had several people involved and everyone was very efficient. We only had a little over an hour and they accommodated ours needs. Thank you again and I can't wait to come back."

  • "It has been a while since I've been to Cucina Toscana and now I wish I'd returned more often. We went on a Monday evening so it was probably less busy than other days of the week. The service was great and not overly "attentive". That could have been due to the sparse crowd. Every dish was outstanding from the polenta and mushroom appetizer to the risotto special. I had the veal with mushrooms and roasted potatoes. There were many dishes on the menu that looked particularly tempting so I'll have to return soon to satisfy my curiosity."

  • "Valter is no longer associated w/Cucina so our expectations were that the experience would be lower than the last time. Our expectations were exceeded and we had a very nice dinner. Food was great and the overall experience was very nice. Can't speak to the wine selection but food was terrific."

  • "Having eaten Italian food from New York's Little Italy to Florida to California at some of the better Italian restaurants in all I found Cucina Toscana to be equal in quality of preparation and flavor. Caesar salad, prepared table side, was fresh and flavorful as well as creative sauces and pastas."

  • "Went here for a friends birthday. The service was great, the food was delicious, and they even gave her tiramisu for FREE for her birthday! No embarrassing song or big scene. It was just perfect!"

  • "Granted my expectations were somewhat high having visited Cucina Toscana in the past. You used to be able to expect great service and great food (which matched the high price tag on the meal). Our waiter was terrible - bringing out the wrong item with every request. I could have lived with that if it weren't for his rude demeanor. To top it off? We arrived home to find the garbage from our seafood meal in the to-go containers and the wrong dessert. After calling the manager, my experience was solidified - there's no charm in this restaurant anymore."

  • "I expected good food, great atmosphere, great service, and a big bill. What we had was great food, so-so service, not good atmosphere, and a fairly large bill. Seating was cramped together at a small, unstable (annoyingly so) table by the window/emergency exit. I've been more comfortable at fast food restaurants, honestly. We were close enough to other small tables on both sides that we had to lean a little each time the server visited the other tables in order to avoid being bumped. It looked like there were lots of VIP type sections that were roomy, comfortable, and barren of guests. The server was a little snooty and had better things to do, apparently. The food saved this rating. I can't bring myself to give it less than 4 overall."

  • "A group of us on a business trip lucked into finding this gem slightly off the beaten path in Salt Lake City. I can't think of anything negative about this experience, from the moment we entered to the expertise of the staff, we were offered choices and had a meal that exceeded our expectations! Everything was based on the freshest of ingredients and great care was taken in preparation and presentation. We had a fantastic time!"

  • "I wanted to choose a nice place to meet a group of friends for dinner. I have been here in the past and thought the food and ambience was good..a little on the pricey side but acceptable. We had a group of 8 and were all very disappointed. The least expensive bottle of red wine available was $75 dollars! The food was ok but certainly not work $30+ for a pasta plate with the appetizers and salads additional. I don't remember the food being so expensive so I am sure the menu has changed. I also remember the food being much better on previous visits. I won't be back and was embarrassed about the prices for my group of friends."

  • "This place is all menu hype. Everything we had was overcooked. I have never seen a lobster this tough before. If you like food don't bother with this place but if you want to be seen dining with yuppies then you will be right at home."

  • "This restaurant is simply not worth the time. They were "out of most everything"from the bar and the wine list was also "out"...The place was empty and had no atmosphere. The food was served luke warm and servers spent all night apologizing for being out of everything. The "sister" restaurant next door is now closed. There are too many other options in town. Stay away."
