A word from Cuba Libre - DC
Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar features Nuevo Cubano cuisine by two-time James Beard award-winning Chef Guillermo Pernot. Pernot's menus feature tantalizing tastes that are derived from the exotic island"s culinary traditions, which include Spanish, African, Creole and Asian influences. The restaurant's atmosphere transports guests to Old Havana circa the 1950s. One-of-a-kind millwork and architectural salvage including unique doors, gates, cabinetry, furniture and accessories help capture the essence of old Cuban architecture. Colorful exotic foliage and large potted palm trees add to Cuba Libre's open-air, tropical ambiance. Featuring a selection of over 70 rums, Cuba Libre's uniquely refreshing house specialty, the mojito, is made from the authentic Cuban recipe of combining rum, fresh lime juice, fresh mint leaves, a splash of soda and most distinctively, guarapo, sugar cane juice pressed daily on site.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Great experience. Food was terrific. The choice of Mojito’s is impressive. Highly recommend the mushroom and Shrimp Ceviche(s), the Dorade and Mango Mojito shrimps. Service was outstanding. Anne, our waitress couldn’t have been more knowledgeable about the menu, courteous and efficient. Super evening in a happening place! Make sure you request a table in the back room or you won’t hear what your friends have to say. The bar is quite noisy if you plan to have diner there. They do have valet parking; an additional plus in DC."

  • "We were kind of disappointed that the restaurant was not ready to serve at the time of our reservation and we had to wait 10 minutes or so before they were ready to seat anyone. We did enjoy the food -- we all went with the all you can eat brunch just to we could taste a bunch of different things. the watermelon mojitos were great, but the waiter did not tell us that we could have had all we wanted for $14 a person extra and instead we ended up with a $60 pitcher. If we ever go back, that's what we'll do. We enjoyed the breakfast oriented food more than the lunch oriented food at brunch but it also might have just been what we ordered. Definitely go with the French toast but do not order the cubano version of spring rolls."

  • "Our server was so genuine and friendly I felt as though we were his private guests. He was attentive and shared the coconut seafood as his favorite dish and we completely agreed. This place was the best discovery of the year - I will definitely be back and order more plantains as well;)"

  • "Cuba Libre was just okay. The food was interesting, but greasy and nothing special. Both the food and drinks came out slowly, but the waitstaff were nice enough that we didn't mind. Next time I'd just get a mimosa instead of the mimosa roja. My favorite part of the meal was the Cuba Mocha - a sweet, creamy coffee that tasted like mexican chocolate."

  • "Enjoyed food very much. Probably entire experience would be much better if I wouldn't have to wait 15 minutes for a drink (and thats when there were 5 tables in the restaurant). Not sure what waiter was doing entire time - but definitely not waiting on tables. Only thing he was fast with, was processing the payment."

  • "Group of five for brunch on Sunday and we had a great time. It was weird because my cousin and her friend arrived early and they had drinks at the bar- we were there for the brunch (which for $26 includes a great variety of tapas and for $14 more unlimited drinks). They never offer nor asked them if they would be having the unlimited specials (which we were) so they unnecessarily paid for drinks at the bar. The unlimited is a all or none. I understand this for the tapas but not for the drinks. We later discovered that the drink selection is very limited and there is a $2 up-charge on some tapas- this is chintzy to me and made me feel like I was about to board a domestic flight and be charged for a seat and then my bag and then a drink...."

  • "Cubes Libra was an awesome experience. I visited the restaurant around 4:30. It was open, spacious, and uniquely decorated. The staff was friendly and attentive. There was plenty to choose from on the menu. We had monitors and some small plates. The pork empanadas were great but my favorite was the panini spring rolls. A great place for just a snack and drinks or for lunch and dinner. I did that go to this restaurant after nine, but I hear that the place is hopping! Go and try it. You won't be disappointed!"

  • "Had a group of 8 and the service was perfect. Everyone raved about the food except one member of the group whose mussels were gritty with sand. Otherwise all was very enjoyable."

  • "A fun ambiance with an energetic vibe. The food was excellent with flavors that are definitely worth experiencing. Good menu choices without being overwhelming. I like the choice of mix and match tapas approach or standard entre path."

  • "We went out to celebrate a family member's birthday. We were seated at a table next to a window which was nice. It was a busy night because there was a concert so our food was served rather quickly. But that was the only quibble. We had drinks-the mojito was among the best I've had with a perfect blend of flavors. The food was really good. Nice citrusy flavors. The bread and mango butter is a nice touch. We shared desserts which provided a nice finishing touch. I would recommend not going on a night with a big concert or ball game unless you're planning on going to those events."

  • "Cuba Libre has great atmosphere and is located in a energetic part of DC. The staff was very friendly; although surprised we only had sparkling water with our meal. The food was outstandingl in every way. The prices are at the top of the reasonable level based on myeexperiences at similar restaurants, but it was really nice. Ambience reminded me of several places, i.e. San Antonio's Riverwalk. I don't like to give perfect scores because anything can be improved, but Cuba Libre deserves it."

  • "Always love Cuba libre. Great atmosphere and food. Service is consistently the best I've ever had. Tonight One our food orders was so so, which was unusual, and they took care of it for us. I recommend for dressed up date night, girls night out, brunch, and it's my go to spot in jeans and touristy clothes after a long day of seeing monuments and the mall when friends and fam visit!!!"

  • "Vibrant atmosphere, delicious food & cocktails. Very hip and fun. Later was knowledgeable, attentive and entertaining. It was very busy when we went, So for that reason only I would not recommend bringing children. However, it would be an awesome adult night out."

  • "A Cuban and I (an americano) had lunch. The Cuban tells me that the classic Cuban food is authentic and very good. Great guacamole with plantain chips, excellent empanadas, perfect rice and beans and maduros, and wonderful flan. Plus the Cobbano Salad is a Cobb with Cuban touch--really superb. Overall the cuisine was top notch. The ambiance is a little off-putting, though, as one feels like he is eating in a decorated warehouse. Lower ceilings or maybe some carpet to dampen the noise would be helpful."

  • "Excellent brunch option, especially if you don't believe you can get full on tapas. Unlimted tapas for $27, with unlimited brunch cocktails for an additional $12. Many different options from sweet to savory with a cuban flair."

  • "While we very much like this restaurant, we were severely disappointed that we had to wait 30 minutes for our table. Hostess staff also did not provide us with an estimated wait time and thus we had to continually ask."

  • "Clearly, we weren't the only ones to think that a 6:30 dinner reservation just before a concert at the nearby Verizon Center was a good idea. The restaurant was packed, and we were finally escorted to our table at 7:05. Our waitress was very accommodating when we explained that we were pressed for time, and brought the food quickly. It was only mediocre, as was the relentless soundtrack of salsa-style music that was much too loud. I probably should have opted for a beer and a hot dog at the concert."

  • "We (a group of three) did the bottomless tapas and beverages on a Saturday brunch. Super long wait to get water (we were thirsty and it was kind of hot/stuffy inside). We put in a drink order at least 20 minutes before our first food order. They arrived at the same time. After the long initial wait, the food orders were delivered in a timely manner. However, it felt like we had to beg for another drink each time we ordered. It was never offered/asked. And it took a verrrrryyyy long time for each round to be delivered. Considering the price of bottomless, the drink service was atrocious. I would not recommend coming here for the bottomless brunch option."

  • "Came for dinner on Saturday before a movie at E Street. Heard the place was a little "disney" but the menu looked good, and vegetarian friendly (for my wife.) The main dining room is a little over the top with its thematic decor, but still fun. Unfortunately, despite many open tables they steered us towards a side room that was full of larger parties, not the best ambiance for a table for 2. Cocktails were good and our server was attentive, but you had to nearly shout over the noise around us. Vegetarian small plates were tasty, but nearly everything we ordered was fried so left feeling blah. She ordered the ravioli as well, which was overpowered by tartness (vinegar?). The ceviche with scallops was good. Would not recommend."

  • "Visiting DC for a week so we were looking for good, semi-upscale restaurants with variety. We made a reservation online just an hour ahead and walked right past a few who were waiting. The staff was outstanding from the hostess to our waiter to the servers and bussers. The food was fantastic and authentic (I lived in Miami and have had some stellar Cuban food). I would certainly go back!"

  • "Our second visit to this restaurant. Food and drinks were very good, as we remembered it. However, our service was terrible. We must have sat with empty appetizer plates in front of us for at least 10 minutes before they were cleared and then it was another 15 minutes until our entrees showed up. We were attending a concert at the Verizon Center at 8pm and our reservation was at 6pm. We actually had to flag down a manager to bring us our check because our waiter continually passed by our table without stopping, even though it was very clear that we were finished with our entrees. Other table around us were served much more efficiently."

  • "Great food but they were very disorganized in seating us for our reservation. Wait staff took awhile to take our drink and food order."

  • "This is about the fifth time I have eaten at Cuba Libre. Each time I have enjoyed it a lot. The cuisine is innovative, flavorful, and varied. This time I had a pork entree that was extremely good. In the past sometimes I've had an entree and sometimes a combination of small plates. The service is friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, and efficient. For a beer, the waiter recommended a Virginia porter that was great, if you like rich dark beers. The restaurant is decorated very well. I'd stay away from a table on the bar side of the restaurant - it's quieter on the other side. Cuba Libre is a restaurant I enjoy coming back to!"

  • "This was a Birthday trip to DC with my husband and we had a great time. The food was great and an expansive drink menu. The atmosphere was very up beat and music everywhere. We had a very late dinner and after 11 the front bar area becomes a hot spot for dancing so we lingered a bit. Great vibe and centrally located."

  • "If you love to get your money's worth, Cuba's brunch is the best! For $26, you can have unlimited tapas. Just remember, your entire table must get the unlimited tapas in order to do this but it is worth it! They have the best guacamole and french toast (it has delicious plantains on top) The crab benedict is to die for! Make sure you wear some loose pants though"

  • "Great for classic Cuban drinks and food with modern style. By 10p, the tables and chairs are tucked away to make room for a dance floor. Hard to continue your conversation but great people watching"

  • "Cuba Libre is exceptional in every category. They have taken great pains to create a dining experience that makes inmerses you in a vision of what a street in Havana may look like. The mojitos (the Sandito being my preferred choice) taste freshly made. The food is quite delicious (the Mixed grill is my go to lunch item) and the service from coat check to taking our meals is supremely attentive. Always love how the bill arrives in a cigar box."

  • "I always enjoyed Cuba Libre during my years in Philadelphia, but I recently went to their Penn Quarter establishment for the first time. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is a lot of fun. I especially recommend the coconut mojito, which is to die for!"

  • "We ordered the tapas which was a great way to sample several different dishes. Everything was excellent! Our server, Jessica, was fantastic. She recommended not only great food choices, but also wine and dessert. The food showed up within minutes of ordering and all were terrific (we had a hard time trying to determine our favorite since all were so good). Definitely a good choice!"

  • "Disappointed. Saturday night with a concert at the Verizon Center so very busy. Service was extremely slow. 15 min for the server to take our drink order only to find out they were out of the rum I ordered. I was really looking forward to the guacamole but it was flavorless .reminded me of the quac at Taco Bell. Black bean soup which was bland as well. Could it have hurt them to had a little dollop of sour cream, or a few shreds of cheese or red onion to the top? - plain, plain, plain. My house salad was good, and the paella was ok but again, bland. We did order the banana bread pudding which was the best thing we had all night. Needless to say, a big disappointment. If you go, just stick with the drinks and have dinner somewhere else."

  • "Food average. The most shocking part was. A cuban restaurant and the in house white rum is from Puerto Rico. Cuba has a lot of music history. They were playing merengue which is from Dominican Republic."
