A word from Cuba Libre - DC
Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar features Nuevo Cubano cuisine by two-time James Beard award-winning Chef Guillermo Pernot. Pernot's menus feature tantalizing tastes that are derived from the exotic island"s culinary traditions, which include Spanish, African, Creole and Asian influences. The restaurant's atmosphere transports guests to Old Havana circa the 1950s. One-of-a-kind millwork and architectural salvage including unique doors, gates, cabinetry, furniture and accessories help capture the essence of old Cuban architecture. Colorful exotic foliage and large potted palm trees add to Cuba Libre's open-air, tropical ambiance. Featuring a selection of over 70 rums, Cuba Libre's uniquely refreshing house specialty, the mojito, is made from the authentic Cuban recipe of combining rum, fresh lime juice, fresh mint leaves, a splash of soda and most distinctively, guarapo, sugar cane juice pressed daily on site.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We LOVED our experience here. They have great tapas with a good serving amount. The drinks were awesome and the decor was lots of fun. Highly recommend!"

  • "We took some of our colleagues from our New York office to Cuba Libre for lunch and they raved about the food. Granted, I've been there several times and will continue to go back. Our server was very attentive and explained each dish. She even gave her own personal recommendations. If you're in the area, definitely stop by and have a bite."

  • "Your Tapas menu is what dreams are made of! Just enough of a selection to excite and satisfy!"

  • "My wife and I were in the mood for Cuban food and booked this table when we learned of Cuba Libre. Upon entering, we were struck by the Disney-esque decor, which is remarkable in its own faux Havana kind of way. Our server was very pleasant, but most likely inexperienced. It took too long to receive our mojitos which arrived quite a bit after our appetizer. Once the drinks arrived, we shared our disappointment with the lack of rum and oomph-quite watery and sweet. The Cuban sandwich was just okay. The bread seemed a bit mealy and could have been buttered more before toasting/pressing. Second round of drinks again took way too long. Beers were just delivered to the table without glassware. Will not repeat."

  • "Loved everything. Food is excellent. Mojito was as desired. I would return in a heartbeat and recommend to anyone"

  • "This is usually not an issue. So when I had friends in town for the holiday I added Cuba Libre to the itinerary. Unfortunately, our food came out less than room temperature, plates were dirty and the server didn't return before our first two tapas came out so we had to take plates from an empty table. It was, I'm hoping, an off evening."

  • "You'll love the food here, but don't go if you're in a rush or have a post-dinner commitment. We had to ask three times for something over the course of 20 minutes before we finally got it. Had to ask twice for a second order of bread, and it arrived with dessert. We waited at least half an hour after we finished our meal for the check. And it wasn't even particularly crowded. But the food is luscious and unique."

  • "Went for dinner and ordered from the tapas menu. Great choices - wonderful flavors and presentation! Recommend the sangria too!"

  • "There was nothing wrong with Cuba Libre. The tapas were good - some outstanding, the service was very nice, and the atmosphere is bustling and fun. That being said, I'm not sure I'd go back. Nothing was so fabulous about it that Cuba Libre would stand out in my mind when thinking about places to eat in the future. If I was looking for small plates, a place just nearby comes to mind."

  • "Started off very good with attentive service, but once part of our order arrived at our table, she disappeared and we weren't able to get refills on our water, ask about the other order, or anything. I even tried to mention it to her before she left, "oh your food is here" - "well, 3 of the 4" - no response. When she did return with water (finally), she noticed the missing dish & we did end up receiving it. Should've been taken off the bill or another accommodation made for this, but just blamed on "new food deliverers" not knowing the restaurant yet. Food was good, wouldn't recommend yuca fries - very blah and bland flavor. Everything else was great."

  • "My husband and I love Caipirinhas and when I saw we were going to be in DC close to Cuba Libra I immediately booked. We had been to their Atlantic City location a while ago and had a great meal and great drinks - Caipirinhas. Food was okay, not wonderful. Caipirinhas were bitter and probably the worst we ever had, I'm sorry to say. The restaurant was very energetic though. So if you are going for the night life, I think you would enjoy this location."

  • "Food was terrific. I came with a large party, and I don't think anyone ordered anything they weren't enthusiastic about. The pork and beef dishes are their strong suit, it seems like."

  • "My husband and I took our 12 year old to the restaurant for an early dinner on a weekday. The service was great. They explained the menu well and timed each course perfectly. The guacamole has pineapple and jalapeño in it and uses fried plantains as "chips". our son picked 2 tapas as his meal, giving him a variety. My husband had the pulled port. I had the sea bass. All were fabulous. My husband and I shared the mini desert trio (a small flan, small tres leches cake and a small rice pudding) It was cute and tasted wonderful. My son had the dulce de leche ice cream. He said it was the best he had ever eaten. The indoor decor was outdoors on a cuban street. I strongly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Earlier this week I visited Cuba Libre with two other people. We had drinks and dinner and really enjoyed dinner. I returned two evenings later by myself and was so disappointed in the service. The server did not offer me bread. I had been there over a half hour and had to ask for it. I ordered empanadas for dinner and sangria. I waited a long time until I could get the server's attention for my check. I felt the server was inattentive to me as a single diner and could have cared less if I was served or if I return. I am a business woman and would most likely have referred people here if I had had a good experience when I dined alone. Clearly, the server did not received a good tip from me."

  • "Dining mid week, the restaurant was deserted late in the day. The food was great, but the usually energy at Cuba Libre was missing."

  • "We opted for the $26 all inclusive and $14 for beverages. So glad we did. There are so many things to try and everything was delicious. I would not recommend the crab cake Benedict. It seemed fishy tasting. But everything else was fabulous. We will be back sooner rather than later!"

  • "We have been in the DC/NOVA area for almost 20 years and we have finally found a place we can enjoy our traditional food without having to travel. Cuba Libre is now my favorite spot for latino flavor and I will definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for the "Caribe" experience. The location is perfect, the service is awesome and trust me, the food is great. If you're in the mood for Caribbean Food, give it a shot, you won't be disappointed."

  • "I've been to Cuba Libre many times... And it's been great every time. The menu has a lot to offer and I always have trouble picking what to get-- inevitably we order more than we can eat cuz it all sounds too good to pass up. But leftovers from CL are never a bad thing. :)"

  • "Came with a group of four after the Shakespeare Theater, had a lot of tapas and one entree, many drinks. Our server was top notch, and everyone came away very favorably impressed."

  • "We made a reservation for 7:30pm on a Wed. night. We were shown to our table immediately. Overall, the food was excellent. We ordered a number of appetizers and there plenty of food to share with everyone at the table. Everyone especially enjoyed the guacamole & empanadas. Our waitress was ok, she forgot to take some food orders and I had to track her down a couple of times. Our appetizers came out one at a time and we were still having appetizers delivered when our entrees arrived. But, overall, the food itself was delicious and I would highly recommend it. But be aware, the restaurant is a bit noisy. However, everyone, especially our out of town guests, really enjoyed the restaurant & food."

  • "I chose Cuba Libre for Father's Day for a change of pace from the usual offerings. I have enjoyed the restaurant with friends so I knew that he would love it. He was surprised that I chose Cuba Libre but he had an excellent time. The food and service were great and we had a wonderful time."

  • "We went to Cuba Libre for Fathers Day Brunch. The food was delicious, the service was exceptional, and the unlimited menu was a great value. This is a terrific spot (especially if you are hungry). If you are visiting DC, you should definitely get a meal at Cuba Libre."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "Tacky decor. Service is so slow. We did the all you can eat brunch and the food and drinks would come out 20 mins after you order it. I only had a party of 7. The slow slow slow service only made the entire experience worse. Food was sub par. Drinks tastes watered down. Meh."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "Although the ambience did have a costume feel to it I wasn't at all impressed with the food. Being from Latin decent I've eaten at other Spanish style restaurants and can say that there's no comparison. The tapas brunch menu was very expensive for the amount of food provided and not so tasty."

  • "Cuba Libre was referred by a friend and loved it. My wife and I dined there and then worked off our dinner dancing the night away...Great place, highly recommended!"
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "I think I could recommend almost anything on the menu (we had 5 in our group and shared). But CL just doesn't have the ability to handle timely delivery of food when they're busy. Go when they're not busy."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "The food is not authentic, very expensive and side portions are small. If you ask for more rice be prepared to be charged $3 dollars extra on your bill and the waiter doesn't even tell you. I had to constantly hunt down our waiting because he forgot to regularly check on us. The website mentioned a salsa show by professional dancers, it was the main reason we went to Cuba libre and did not see it at all! The show and dancing was to start at 11pm, we stayed a whole hour waiting and nothing. We could not wait any longer because there were no seats available during that time and if you are wearing heels and standing that long is very uncomfortable. Whoever thought it was a good idea to remove all the seating must not wear heels!"

  • "I have wanted to try Cuba Libre for brunch for quite some time, and was highly impressed when I was finally able to! The service was incredible from meeting the hostess, all the way through our meal. The menu items all looked amazing, and it was difficult finding options that we didn't want to try. Their brunch specials are great for both food and drinks, so we were able to try everything we wanted. Our server was great and very attentive. This will be my new spot to take visitors to. Thanks!"

  • "They have only one vegetarian option on their lunch menu but it was great. The "vegetariano" lunch with a flatbread pizza with lots of roasted veggies, a black bean soup, and a delicious mango-avocado-lime salad. I'd definitely go back, despite of a few service snafus this time."
