A word from Crux Cafe
Chef Stewart’s passion for cuisine was developed in his early days in South Philadelphia. He apprenticed at La Campagna in Cherry Hill where he eventually worked as a line cook, sous chef and finally Executive Chef. During his 16 years, Chef Stewart was awarded the “Wish Dish of the Year” five times, from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He also displayed his talent in many private events, including a private dinner for the renowned Chef Paul Prudhomme of New Orleans.
Chef Stewart’s philosophy embraces the principle that “cuisine should be simple, using only fresh ingredients, so you can let the freshness of the ingredients speak for themselves.” Embarking on a lifelong desire to own and operate his own restaurant, Chef Stewart has created Crux Café, a cozy BYOB set in Audubon, NJ.
The word Crux has the meaning of essence or most important part of something. In this case, it is the start of a café with great food and hospitality for all his guests.

Here is a family run, neighborhood, small BYOB with sophisticated preparations that could compete in Manhattan. The atmosphere is clean, contemporary, but warm and lively. The table cloths, oversize dishes, wine buckets, warm and varied breads, and elegant plating of foods all show the attention to detail necessary for a special experience. The noise level is ideal for conversation. No blaring canned music. Attentive, friendly service without a single (hated) "is everything alright"? Varied ingredients and some "twists" on the usual choices, but nothing weird. Chef owned and operated. Easily a Michelin one-star! Don't miss it.

We discovered this restaurant on one of their Throwback Thursdays: 3 courses for less than $20. But the comfort food favorites were nobody's idea of "home style" food. The Beef Stroganoff on noodles I ordered was one of the best I have ever tasted. The meat was amazingly tender and the sauce was a rich wine infused delight. We returned for a family birthday celebration. Even my Philly based foodie son was quite impressed. He labeled it a winner. Everything was superb and the wait staff extremely helpful and accommodating. Finally, I am disabled and often find restaurants inaccessible. Not only did the restaurant have a handicapped accessible entrance, but one of the staff waited by the front entrance to lead me to it. 5 of 5 stars!

My husband and I love this restaurant. Whenever we go out, my husband always gets calamari for an appetizer and he states Cruz Café has the best he has ever tasted. My clams casino was also excellent. He had gumbo for dinner and was very impressed as I was by my lobster risotto special. Service was cordial and efficient. We plan to come again and to bring friends.

Looking for something close and last minute for our anniversary dinner. Found this spot on Open Table and thought it would be a good change of pace but nothing spectacular. Boy was I surprised with the complexity of the dishes. Everything was delicious and well proportioned. I would put the taste grade on par with some of the Philly restaurants me and my wife enjoy. Nice cozy neighborhood feel to the place.

The waitress was very pleasant and capable. The restaurant is charming and comfortable. A new menu was offered and it was difficult to choose an entree. Gone were some of the more adventuresome food and in their place were some safer options. Instead we had summer salads which were delicious. Filled with a plethora of ingredients, it melded together well. In addition. I had the sweet potato soup. It was a star. Seasoned correctly, it was one of the best soups ever. My wife had the scallop with risotto. She gave that 5 stars. The risotto alone was worth the visit. The disappointment was the seafood cocktail. It was not served chilled and the fish wasn't as tasty as I expected.

We enjoyed a very good meal at this well-run BYOB somewhat off the beaten path. It is a very pretty restaurant and the hostess and waitstaff are friendly, professional and welcoming. The food is very good and served beautifully; potato soup was excellent, tuna and salmon prepared exactly as requested and there is a nice dessert tray as well. Even though 2/3 of the restaurant was occupied by what appeared to be about a thirty person wedding party, the noise level was quite reasonable and our food came out as quickly as could be expected. Very impressive and we will enjoy returning.

There is not one thing I would not recommend, it's all amazing. If I had to select one dish, I would recommend the duck.

Crux Cafe never fails. I went with friends for the Farm to Fork week menu. I was afraid the food or service would suffer because of this sell-out event but I needn't have worried. The servers were wonderful and accommodating, as they always are, and the food was every bit as good as a non-special night. This continues to be a favorite restaurant for us.

Although the service was good and the atmosphere is nice, the food was, for the most part, just so-so. I ordered salmon served over an asparagus risotto. The cheese in the risotto was far to stringy (I expect the cheese to be blended and never stringy!) and the fish was undercooked even though I asked for it to be medium well (they recommend medium which is how it was prepared). The others in my party felt their meals were also just OK. That said, they loved the clam chowder! It was the highlight of the experience.

Overall, the atmosphere is nice and service good. The food was good but nothing notable. I started with the wedge salad and my wife the Gazpacho - both were good. Our second course (a fish course) included the Skate and Scallops. The scallops were cooked perfectly and the risoto had a nice flavor. The skate had a bit of an ammonia taste and the presentation a bit odd - croutons, bacon & cauliflower. For the meat course, I had the Sunday Gravy and my wife the chicken. The Sunday Gravy was good but the meatball was a bit dry. My wife's chicken was seriously overcooked but the sauce and crab was tasty. Overall, a good experience but unfortunately nothing to drive me back for more.

I think Crux probably really appeals to some, but it wasn't a fit for us. Not bad, but not impressive enough for a return visit. For entrees, we ordered tuna and pork. The tuna was fine, but nothing special. The pork dish was overcooked (i.e., dry). The chef may be used to catering to a clientele that prefers more well-done food - that's not us. Service: The service was fine, but we felt like the chef was lingering/hovering a bit at our table (nearer to the kitchen). The restaurant wasn't crowded, so that felt a little awkward. Atmosphere: This place is cute, but seemed too brightly lit. We ate there at 6:30pm on a weeknight in the summer - it was still light outside. Maybe it is different later or on weekends.

This restaurant doesn't do anything super fancy, it just continually puts out well prepared meals at very fair prices in a nice, comfortable atomosphere. We had the crab cakes and scallops as appetizers, both for the first time. The mahi-mahi was a special and well prepared but the pork loin that is a standard on the menu was delicious. We have eaten here 10 plus times and look forward to our next 10 visits.
