A word from Crux Cafe
Chef Stewart’s passion for cuisine was developed in his early days in South Philadelphia. He apprenticed at La Campagna in Cherry Hill where he eventually worked as a line cook, sous chef and finally Executive Chef. During his 16 years, Chef Stewart was awarded the “Wish Dish of the Year” five times, from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He also displayed his talent in many private events, including a private dinner for the renowned Chef Paul Prudhomme of New Orleans.
Chef Stewart’s philosophy embraces the principle that “cuisine should be simple, using only fresh ingredients, so you can let the freshness of the ingredients speak for themselves.” Embarking on a lifelong desire to own and operate his own restaurant, Chef Stewart has created Crux Café, a cozy BYOB set in Audubon, NJ.
The word Crux has the meaning of essence or most important part of something. In this case, it is the start of a café with great food and hospitality for all his guests.

  • "This was my second visit to the Crux Cafe. The decor and ambiance are wonderful. The menu is just right across the board varied choices from the foodie to the plain. The kitchen accommodated the special requests of some of our party. The service was good and the Chef and his wife came around and spoke to us. It was a very enjoyable experience overall. Can't wait for the outdoor seating to open and looking forward to going back for a Throw back Thursday menu night. I would highly recommend checking them out."

The soups are reliably good and the Chef reaches beyond the norm with some of his specials. We find the base menu to be absolutlely reliable as to quality and taste. Joe AKA Chef Steward came over to the table and made a such a fuss over me and my wife--we felt like we were at home. This is a diamond in the ruff--parking was easy and we sat right away. Does not have the hustle and bustle of Collingswood--however it has the small town feel to it. We loved it. We will be back."

  • "The restaurant is located in a small town and can be a little difficult to find. However, it is worth the slight inconvenience. The menu is varied and reasonably priced. Our dinners were excellent. I had onion soup which was as good as being in France. The small venue is tastefully decorated and very comfortable with upholstered chairs. It is also a BYO which is a big plus in keeping the cost down. We will be back....soon."

  • "We tried this for SJ Restaurant Week. Unlike many restaurants during this week the food was wonderful and plentiful. Our food was absolutely delicious and prepared very uniquely. We had mussels, french onion soup, filet, salmon , flat bread and fantastic desserts. It is not on a main street but it is definitely worth finding. Don't miss out. Staff was friendly and the restaurant has been open less than a year. It deserves to stay open and you will be treated to a wonderful meal!"

  • "my wife works around the corner from this restaurant but we did not have the chance to go in for 6 months after it opened. it was worth the wait. We each had the tasting menu, which was an incredibly eclectic four courses. The specialty here seems to be meat andseafood and each course was centered around a different kind of meat. lamb meatballs, mussels, duck cassoulet. None was exactly the best ever, but all were consistent quality. dessert and coffee were a treat with a coffee tray and large portions. Service was great and the space was beautiful. I hope this restaurants sticks around. Its great to have a non steakhouse, non italian restaurant in South Jersey open. They are so rare"

  • "We had heard about the restaurant from a friend and were pleasantly surprised to find that it was on the South Jersey Restaurant Week List. The New Orleans Clam Chowder was unique and very tasty. The veal was tender and delicious. The desserts were the pick of a large tray and were excellent. Coffee service came with a lazy Susan of tasty extras like cinnamon sticks, shaved chocolate, and whipped cream. The very pleasant young lady who served us answered every question we had and her service was impeccable even though the place started to become more crowded. I highly recommend this very homey, friendly restaurant for it's food and ambience. We look forward to revisiting for lunch or dinner in the near future."

  • "My wife and I went for dinner at 5:30 on a Tuesday. She had the main course that included the lobster ravioli. She enjoyed it very much. I had a shrimp dish which was very tasty. What amazed me is that no matter how much you pay for the dish, in this case $19, you only get six shrimp. The shrimp by the way were a little over cooked. The slight disappointment was dessert. I had read rave reviews about the creme brulee and was anxious to try it but was told they were out of it."

  • "We were pleasantly surprised when we went to Crux Café. We had read about the restaurant in a local paper and they gave it a good review. We try a different restaurant each month and decided to give them a try. We were all satisfied with our lunch entrée. The waitress who served was very personable and enjoyable. We were later surprised by a visit by chef and restaurant owner John Stewart., which made our visit a personal one. We would recommend this restaurant to anyone and plan to return ourselves."

  • "My husband and I went to Crux Cafe for our Valentie's Day dinner. As soon as we walked in, we both commented that the restaurant felt more like a breakfast/brunch spot. A prix fixe menu was offered for the holiday and food was not as good as the previous reviews suggest. The service was excellent! The combination of wonderful service and a kid - free night out made for a fantastic evening despite mediocre food. In defense of the restaurant, there are many reviews raving about the chef. I would absolutely try Crux Cafe again (perhaps for brunch) when the full menu is offered."

  • "We went to this restaurant because of the good online reviews. The place was small, cozy and was in a nice residential neighborhood. The decor was tasteful & elegant, but thats where our positive review ended. Our waiter was ill mannered, and impatient. Considering it was our first time here, not only did he make us feel rushed, but he made us he made us feel like idiots when asking questions about the menu. The appetizers were decent, but the short ribs were bland & the gumbo had a wierd aftertaste (as if someone tried to doctor up a cheap sauce that came out of a can) We would not go there again"

  • "First time at Crux and it will not be the last. Appetizer dishes of sea scallops and duck spring rolls were fabulous. Only regret on the scallops, was that there were only three. The goat cheese salad is a winner! Entrees of Seafood Alfredo and Filet Mignon special were also fabulous. Everything was perfect! Our waiter was very attentive and friendly."

Intrigued by the menu we decided to give it a go, we were more than impressed and are excited that we have a new go to place. Right from the beginning the experience was great; a very personable and welcoming hostess, our wonderful waitress Lauren and a great ambiance really enhanced our experience. We started with the portobello mushroom appetizer with amazing polenta fries and salads which were also very different and delicious. The Shrimp and Seafood Alfredo entrees were so much more than we expected...delicious pasta and great seafood. Overall an amazing dinner and we are already planning our next visit!"

  • "We had a wonderful meal out with some friends---all of our meals were good, soup of the day (white bean with tomato), clam chowder, Shrimp Gumbo, Short ribs, Chicken with gnocchi pasta, and a sirloin steak. We would go back for the food, but the service was not so good. We met our waiter twice---once to take our order and again to give us our check---he never came back to serve our food or check on us at all during the evening! We don't want someone to hover over us, but a waiter should at least come past to see whether you need anything else--more water, another drink, etc."

  • "I am hesitant to write this review. Had dinner twice at this wonderful little cafe on Merchant Street in Audubon. While I have not had trouble getting a reservation through OpenTable, I am afraid that when the word gets out how good the food and service is here, getting reservations will become difficult. My wife and and I have had the New Orleans Clam Chowder each time we've been here, and it's consistently delicious. It's loaded with fresh vegetables and full of tender clams. Last night I had the Short Ribs (served on whipped potatoes and braised root vegetables). Our server, who was friendly and attentive, brought me a steak knife right before the Short Ribs were served. Never had to use it! The meat was so tender, it cut with the fork."

  • "You don't need to go to Philly or even to Collingswood to get great food. Crux Cafe has it. Flavorful comfort food with an upscale twist is the best way to describe it. Chef Joseph Stewart prepared amazing short ribs with gnocchi, goat cheese salad, fried calamari salad, gumbo, chicken fontina and seafood alfredo for our party of four. We loved every bite! Fresh ingredients, lovely presentation. Service was excellent, even on a busy Saturday night. We'll be returning soon to this gem of a BYOB."

The food was delicious, with creative appetizers, generous portions and delicious entree's with just enough to choose from.
