A word from Crux Cafe
Chef Stewart’s passion for cuisine was developed in his early days in South Philadelphia. He apprenticed at La Campagna in Cherry Hill where he eventually worked as a line cook, sous chef and finally Executive Chef. During his 16 years, Chef Stewart was awarded the “Wish Dish of the Year” five times, from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He also displayed his talent in many private events, including a private dinner for the renowned Chef Paul Prudhomme of New Orleans.
Chef Stewart’s philosophy embraces the principle that “cuisine should be simple, using only fresh ingredients, so you can let the freshness of the ingredients speak for themselves.” Embarking on a lifelong desire to own and operate his own restaurant, Chef Stewart has created Crux Café, a cozy BYOB set in Audubon, NJ.
The word Crux has the meaning of essence or most important part of something. In this case, it is the start of a café with great food and hospitality for all his guests.

Diner Reviews
  • "We arrived early and the staff seated us without any ado. The food was quite tasty and the service, very good. BYO is a gr8 drawing card for us and we will return to Crux soon."

  • "The Crux is absolutely a neighborhood gem. We have been there for Lunch, brunch and, most recently, dinner. The room is small but quaint. The owners are great, the service is excellent, and the food is outsranding. We would recommend it to anyone...... and we have!"

  • "I have been going here at least once a month for a year. After our first two visits, the owners and staff remembered our names. That's a special thing you don't get everywhere. Food is top notch. There is not one thing I would not recommend, it's all amazing. If I had to select one dish, I would recommend the duck."

  • "Crux Cafe never fails. I went with friends for the Farm to Fork week menu. I was afraid the food or service would suffer because of this sell-out event but I needn't have worried. The servers were wonderful and accommodating, as they always are, and the food was every bit as good as a non-special night. This continues to be a favorite restaurant for us."

  • "Although the service was good and the atmosphere is nice, the food was, for the most part, just so-so. I ordered salmon served over an asparagus risotto. The cheese in the risotto was far to stringy (I expect the cheese to be blended and never stringy!) and the fish was undercooked even though I asked for it to be medium well (they recommend medium which is how it was prepared). The others in my party felt their meals were also just OK. That said, they loved the clam chowder! It was the highlight of the experience."

  • " A Person in our party has a gluten allergy and I informed the restaurant before hand. The server had a list of options for her ready. It was awesome! Thank you for a wonderful evening!"

  • "Everything about Crux that was wonderful! The staff was friendly & attentive. The food was outstanding. This was our first visit and we can't wait to go back!"

  • "Overall, the atmosphere is nice and service good. The food was good but nothing notable. I started with the wedge salad and my wife the Gazpacho - both were good. Our second course (a fish course) included the Skate and Scallops. The scallops were cooked perfectly and the risoto had a nice flavor. The skate had a bit of an ammonia taste and the presentation a bit odd - croutons, bacon & cauliflower. For the meat course, I had the Sunday Gravy and my wife the chicken. The Sunday Gravy was good but the meatball was a bit dry. My wife's chicken was seriously overcooked but the sauce and crab was tasty. Overall, a good experience but unfortunately nothing to drive me back for more."

  • "Found this place when looking for a nice local restaurant. We found a pristine dining room, friendly and attentive service and a pleasantly inventive menu. Hopefully as people find Crux it becomes busier as it was pretty quiet for a Friday night. We will definitely be coming back...Try the special- the chef has a unique style."

  • "Looking for something different? Look no further. Crux Cafe offers a diverse menu unlike other restaurants in this area. Wait staff is attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. Chef Stewat offers a great selection of meals on the menu and with specials. He can also be found greeting customers. We will definitely return."

  • "Cooked salmon arrived cold on hot sweet potatoes; tea with no lemon; had to ask for everything that should have been offered - lemon, ice, refills. Lovely space and pleasant ambiance. There was only one other table occupied when I was there so I see no excuse for the above. Liked the place alot and note these things because I want them to improve and stay around!"

  • "I think Crux probably really appeals to some, but it wasn't a fit for us. Not bad, but not impressive enough for a return visit. For entrees, we ordered tuna and pork. The tuna was fine, but nothing special. The pork dish was overcooked (i.e., dry). The chef may be used to catering to a clientele that prefers more well-done food - that's not us. Service: The service was fine, but we felt like the chef was lingering/hovering a bit at our table (nearer to the kitchen). The restaurant wasn't crowded, so that felt a little awkward. Atmosphere: This place is cute, but seemed too brightly lit. We ate there at 6:30pm on a weeknight in the summer - it was still light outside. Maybe it is different later or on weekends."

  • "We stumbled upon this neighborhood gem on a Thursday night. They have a special menu that day and the food was fantastic. The portions are huge so be prepared to take some home. Can't wait to go back."

  • "They graciously accommodated a last minute large party specific with foodies, wheelchairs, and allergies all around! Not one complaint - all of us would go back for all wonderful aspects of this great restaurant! 5 star and coffee to die for!"

  • "We went for dinner on a Thursday night. They have a great Throw Back Thursday menu, lots of home style choices. Great for $19.00 - soup or salad, entree and choice of dessert. Joe's soups are always delish! Nice selection, great food and very good service. We'll be back."

  • "This restaurant doesn't do anything super fancy, it just continually puts out well prepared meals at very fair prices in a nice, comfortable atomosphere. We had the crab cakes and scallops as appetizers, both for the first time. The mahi-mahi was a special and well prepared but the pork loin that is a standard on the menu was delicious. We have eaten here 10 plus times and look forward to our next 10 visits."
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "The food is prepared with fresh ingredients always. It seems to have an Asian flair on the specials.I have been there three times and so far been more than satisfied each time"

  • " We were going through Open Table looking for a place to eat and stubbled on this out of the way restaurant. I had the duck breast and my wife had the tuna. Both dishes were beautifully presented and tasted just as good. This is a place that is easy to miss since it is not located in a main restaurant venue, but it well worthwhile to make a short trip to get there. The place is light and colorful when you enter. The people at the next table also found Crux on Open Table. I would recommend it highly."

  • "Cafe called 2 hours ahead of time to cancel due to restaurant closing for a family emergency. So, unable to rate for this visit, so will rate for previous visit which caused me to try to return again. Lovely spot, great service, good food."

  • "We needed a centrally located restaurant from Atlantic City to Bucks County, PA. Crux Cafe came up on Open Table. Every review was positive, so I took a chance and was happy I did. The Owner/chef and his wife are true examples of family run restaurants. We were greeted with warm welcomes right thru the end of the evening when the Chef/owner came out to say hello and thank us for coming. Plenty of parking and BYOB. The food was excellent. We celebrated a 75th birthday and they made a wonderful birthday cake with fruit in it that was really different but really good. we would go back."

  • "Great place. Had a wonderful lunch with five of us - all hungry. Enjoyed much better than average food, excellent service and very reasonable prices. We will be regulars, and have told several others about this small but excellent BYOB restaurant. "

  • "Took guests with us who expressed their surprise at the variety and quality of the offerings for brunch . They don't visit often but will return to this location each time they're nearby."

  • "We loved this our first visit and we were hopeful that we would not be disappointed when we returned. Menu was different then last visit by a number f items but just as wonderful. Mussels are fantastic as well as hazelnut encrusted shrimp. It was our anniversary and wanted something special and we got it. Will be returning with friends"

  • "Crux has become our favorite place to go, and its a BYO to boot! Chef Stewart has a wonderfully diverse menu;we try different entrees each time we go and never have been disappointed. The service is wonderful and everyone is friendly and accommodating. Can't wait until our next dining "adventure". "

  • "Food selections were overwhelming. Service was prompt and extremely courteous. This was only my second visit , but surely will not be the last. Hopefully this gem is hidden well enough that reservations won't become a problem. I've compared other choices on the same day with other diners and I made the best choice."

  • "I loved the Crux Café. We went there on a Saturday evening and my dinner was DELICIOUS. Our server was very attentive but not obtrusive. The food was fabulous. My husband - who LOVES quantity - was a little disappointed about the portion sizes and the fact that a salad was not served with the meal but rather was 'a la carte'. The only negative thing I could say is that the scallops on my plate were split in half down the center, giving people the ILLUSION that they were getting two whole scallops on the plate when in fact they were getting one, split in half and seared, then positioned on the plate to give the appearance that there were two. I found that rather strange. I've never had a restaurant do that before. I had the seafood alfredo."
