A word from Crux Cafe
Chef Stewart’s passion for cuisine was developed in his early days in South Philadelphia. He apprenticed at La Campagna in Cherry Hill where he eventually worked as a line cook, sous chef and finally Executive Chef. During his 16 years, Chef Stewart was awarded the “Wish Dish of the Year” five times, from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He also displayed his talent in many private events, including a private dinner for the renowned Chef Paul Prudhomme of New Orleans.
Chef Stewart’s philosophy embraces the principle that “cuisine should be simple, using only fresh ingredients, so you can let the freshness of the ingredients speak for themselves.” Embarking on a lifelong desire to own and operate his own restaurant, Chef Stewart has created Crux Café, a cozy BYOB set in Audubon, NJ.
The word Crux has the meaning of essence or most important part of something. In this case, it is the start of a café with great food and hospitality for all his guests.

Diner Reviews
  • "They graciously accommodated a last minute large party specific with foodies, wheelchairs, and allergies all around! Not one complaint - all of us would go back for all wonderful aspects of this great restaurant! 5 star and coffee to die for!"

  • "We went for dinner on a Thursday night. They have a great Throw Back Thursday menu, lots of home style choices. Great for $19.00 - soup or salad, entree and choice of dessert. Joe's soups are always delish! Nice selection, great food and very good service. We'll be back."

  • "soup too spicy. should have told us. table setting nice but glasses very bland not in keeping with atmosphere. would go back. somewhat pricey."

  • "This restaurant doesn't do anything super fancy, it just continually puts out well prepared meals at very fair prices in a nice, comfortable atomosphere. We had the crab cakes and scallops as appetizers, both for the first time. The mahi-mahi was a special and well prepared but the pork loin that is a standard on the menu was delicious. We have eaten here 10 plus times and look forward to our next 10 visits."

  • "We needed a centrally located restaurant from Atlantic City to Bucks County, PA. Crux Cafe came up on Open Table. Every review was positive, so I took a chance and was happy I did. The Owner/chef and his wife are true examples of family run restaurants. We were greeted with warm welcomes right thru the end of the evening when the Chef/owner came out to say hello and thank us for coming. Plenty of parking and BYOB. The food was excellent. We celebrated a 75th birthday and they made a wonderful birthday cake with fruit in it that was really different but really good. we would go back."

  • " We were going through Open Table looking for a place to eat and stubbled on this out of the way restaurant. I had the duck breast and my wife had the tuna. Both dishes were beautifully presented and tasted just as good. This is a place that is easy to miss since it is not located in a main restaurant venue, but it well worthwhile to make a short trip to get there. The place is light and colorful when you enter. The people at the next table also found Crux on Open Table. I would recommend it highly."

  • "The food was a refreshing departure from the usual faire. The tucked away spot it open and bright, with a modern flair. Lauren, our waitress, was excellent with the service. We would definitely recommend and return again. "

  • "My wife and I went to Crux Cafe for our anniversary and we had a great evening! The food and service were exceptional while we talked and laughed over our favorite bottle of wine. This is a cozy establishment that is perfect for a nice night out of the kitchen or that special occasion."

  • "Great place. Had a wonderful lunch with five of us - all hungry. Enjoyed much better than average food, excellent service and very reasonable prices. We will be regulars, and have told several others about this small but excellent BYOB restaurant. "

  • "We loved this our first visit and we were hopeful that we would not be disappointed when we returned. Menu was different then last visit by a number f items but just as wonderful. Mussels are fantastic as well as hazelnut encrusted shrimp. It was our anniversary and wanted something special and we got it. Will be returning with friends"

  • "Crux has become our favorite place to go, and its a BYO to boot! Chef Stewart has a wonderfully diverse menu;we try different entrees each time we go and never have been disappointed. The service is wonderful and everyone is friendly and accommodating. Can't wait until our next dining "adventure". "

  • "Food selections were overwhelming. Service was prompt and extremely courteous. This was only my second visit , but surely will not be the last. Hopefully this gem is hidden well enough that reservations won't become a problem. I've compared other choices on the same day with other diners and I made the best choice."

  • "I loved the Crux Café. We went there on a Saturday evening and my dinner was DELICIOUS. Our server was very attentive but not obtrusive. The food was fabulous. My husband - who LOVES quantity - was a little disappointed about the portion sizes and the fact that a salad was not served with the meal but rather was 'a la carte'. The only negative thing I could say is that the scallops on my plate were split in half down the center, giving people the ILLUSION that they were getting two whole scallops on the plate when in fact they were getting one, split in half and seared, then positioned on the plate to give the appearance that there were two. I found that rather strange. I've never had a restaurant do that before. I had the seafood alfredo."

  • "If you haven't tried Crux, you haven't hit one of S.J. best dining spots. 10 of us went to lunch. 10 of us raved over the place. Food was fabulous! Prices amazed us at what we got for money and what was one the plate. Try Crux! Bet it becomes your fav lace!"

  • "The food was superb! Went with friends and we each had a different dish...tuna, seafood, chicken and ribs. You must try the mussels, very tender and served with potatoes and leeks in a light cream sauce. Charming atmosphere and friendly staff. Will be our new hot spot. "

  • "We live a few blocks from Crux Cafe and can't believe we didn't check it our earlier! We had a fantastic meal (I had the duck breast, my husband had the liver & sweetbreads). The service was very good and we will be returning again. "

  • "Tuesday night - party of four. A beautiful, sophisticated new restaurant with an appetizer menu that would easily make a meal. Attentive staff with all food cooked to order. Nice variety of entrees offered - something for everyone. Beautiful presentation, food all hot and delicious. Hope this restaurant makes it because we would love to make it a regular stop. "

  • "We had a wonderful dinner on Saturday night at Crux Cafe. The staff couldn't have been more attentive and we got to meet the chef! Our appetizers and entrees were excellent. We had superb mussels and very fine chowder to begin our meal. Warm bread and seasoned butters preceded the meal There was a lot of attention to details on the meal ingredients and beautiful plate presentations. The prices are inline for fine dining and the fact that the place is BYOB makes it very reasonable. We will certainly be back and plan to tell our friends about this great little treasure tucked away in Audubon, NJ. "

  • "We completely enjoyed our visit! Wonderful, varied menu. Fresh-baked breads. Loved the duck spring rolls, the seafood gumbo, the duck entree, and the grand marnier creme brulee. Salads were delicious. Hostess and waiter were very nice and efficient, but not hovering. The decor is pretty, with comfortable chairs and banquettes and fresh table linens. We would definitely come here again."

  • "First visit to Crux Cafe but not my last . My date and I ordered three cores each and the bill ,without tip was under $100 . High lights were New Orleans clam cowder and out standing Gumbo. Service was friendly and warm although the water could have been refilled more regularly . Do not miss the coffee serviced with whipped cream , shaved chocolate and cinnamon sticks . This restaurant is a real treat . "

  • "This was my second visit to the Crux Cafe. The decor and ambiance are wonderful. The menu is just right across the board varied choices from the foodie to the plain. The kitchen accommodated the special requests of some of our party. The service was good and the Chef and his wife came around and spoke to us. It was a very enjoyable experience overall. Can't wait for the outdoor seating to open and looking forward to going back for a Throw back Thursday menu night. I would highly recommend checking them out."

  • "We continue to dine at Crux. The prices are extremely reasonable for the quality of the food this kitchen produces. The soups are reliably good and the Chef reaches beyond the norm with some of his specials. We find the base menu to be absolutlely reliable as to quality and taste. The service team is friendly and attentive without being overbearing. We will continue to visit this establishment."

  • "Me and my wife had a wonderful meal and a wonderful time. Food is delicious and the service is wonderful." Joe AKA Chef Steward came over to the table and made a such a fuss over me and my wife--we felt like we were at home. This is a diamond in the ruff--parking was easy and we sat right away. Does not have the hustle and bustle of Collingswood--however it has the small town feel to it. We loved it. We will be back."

  • "I have been to Crux Café numerous times since its opening. Every time I go, I enjoy it more than the time before. Have had just about everything on the menu, and enjoyed every item. Mussels are divine, the Duck is the incredible, and the Short Ribs are the best ever. Looking forward to my next visit, soon."

  • "Welcoming staff, an interesting menu, delicious food, what more can a diner ask for? The restaurant was tastefully decorated and the chairs very comfortable. The dinner exceeded all expectations. The lobster ravioli with seafood in an alfredo sauce was unbelievably good. The dessert was excellent. We will be back."

  • "Our group of four foodies loved all selections ordered. The portions were larger than what we normally consume but these portions may appeal to many who could make a second meal with the untouched portion. We can not wait to return."

  • "The restaurant is located in a small town and can be a little difficult to find. However, it is worth the slight inconvenience. The menu is varied and reasonably priced. Our dinners were excellent. I had onion soup which was as good as being in France. The small venue is tastefully decorated and very comfortable with upholstered chairs. It is also a BYO which is a big plus in keeping the cost down. We will be back....soon."
