Diner Reviews
  • "Expected higher prices due to location in the museum mile. But bill was $80 each for an appetizer, pasta and a glass of wine (certainly didn't expect to pay $20 for a glass of chardonnay). Food is very good, but the overall experience was not -- ended up being rushed because of wait-staff confusion. Wasted 20 minutes trying to figure out the menu (originally given two different ones). The contents of the "Sunday Supper" varied based on which waiter provided the information (one included dessert, the other didn't). Waiter insisted that the "organic chicken" in the supper was breast although menu said "thigh milanese" - she insisted that the "thigh milanese" was the sauce. She also had to check whether the bolognese sauce included meat."

  • "Great service. Great rear view behind the buildings. Romantic and classy. Check out the private party room. This place is a secret upper east side find!"

  • "The decor and setting at this restaurant is exquisite. Unfortunately the food doesn't match up to the price or the decor. The wine list I outrageously expensive and not all at extensive. Get a new chef !"

  • "I used to adore Crown. What on earh has happened? So disappointed. And empty for a Friday night. Such a shame. Ther service was terrible. Food just ok. Soufflés was not cooked right. Did not receive my full order and then had to cancel sides. Weighters not paying attention at all. Really bad. Fix it please."

  • "Made reservation here only because it was close to an event I was taking a friend to for her birthday, knowing nothing about restaurant, and I was richly rewarded. What a surprisingly beautiful place with the back room covered by a high ceiling of glass, and windows making up the entire side wall. The service & food were excellent. I had a beet salad followed by grilled octopus, my friend the tuna tartare and seared scallops. We shared roared brussel sprouts with bacon. For dessert the chocolate soufflé came out with a candle for my friend, I had the honey lavender panna cotta with citrus which was amazing. I would love to go back, and plan to."

  • "Very high prices. Food poorly executed and of dubiously fresh ingredients. Staff pleasant but largely clueless. Intrusive music provided by one of the least talented musicians in Manhattan. Very disappointing brunch."

  • "Went to Crown with my wife for our anniversary. Early seating (6pm). Great place. Obviously not crowded at this hour, the staff was great from the moment we walked in. Loved the photography along the bar area and the drawings and paintings in the atrium style dining room were really interesting. loved this. The food was great. Fish and Pasta both from the "specials" menu were divine. A couple of glasses of wine and we were finished..or were we? i mentioned on my open table reservation that it was a special occasion and the restaurant did not disappoint. Choc souffle. Perfect. The value for what we spent was great. Would and WILL go back."

  • "The food was great, the service was great and the live music was wonderful - the harp player was such a unique treat! Unfortunately, the kitchen's exhaust was broken so the ambiance was ruined by the smoke. Other patrons were too chilly with the windows open so the smoke kept accumulating - the worst was the downstairs restroom area where I felt like I was in a cigar lounge. I will definitely try Crown again & I hope I can take my time instead or rushing to get out to get relief from the smoke."

  • "...food somewhat mediocre for the price point. Oysters described as "very large, intense oysters" arrived and were in fact tiny and not the freshest I've had. Main course of scallops was a dish achievable at home. The cheese plate was quite a bit sub-par, with the "daily" selection that the waiter had no clue about arriving with three hard cheeses, omitting the blue that was promised and without any bread or crackers."

  • "My favorite restaurant in all of New York. That's says a lot, because I have dined at every five star restaurant in this city. There is no attitude, and you are greeted by name, and always made to feel welcome. The room is gracious, warm, inviting and casually elegant in a beautiful old brown stone on the upper east side. Scott Brown orchestrates the front of the house as if he were conducting a symphony. Nothing escapes him, and he does it all with warmth and precision. The service is impeccable but not intrusive. The presentation of food is beautiful. The chef never ceases to surprise us with his culinary expertise. They have a handkerchief pasta that you can only find here. Don't miss this jewel."

  • "I went to Crown with my boyfriend for an early dinner and it was delicious! It was so beautiful inside and perfect for a quiet, date-night. The manager and staff were all very welcoming and recommended the red snapper which was wonderful. I rarely visit this part of the city but it made me want to go back for sure."

  • "Ideal Sunday. You can see an exhibit at The Met and walk a block to Crown for a lively Jazz Brunch. Love the decor."

  • "Example: $19.00 appetizer of braised baby artichokes? They were canned. Overwhelming vinegar taste. Pasta was overcooked. Desserts and pastries were fabulous, but too little to save the mediocrity. Great setting, service was prompt but too intrusive, interrupting conversation ...numerous empty tables on Saturday night. This was our fourth and final time since it opened."

  • "Crown is very pretty. Woods, subdued sound, reasonable service. But, oh those prices! Scallops for $39.00? Appetizers for well over $20? And the wine list! so many bottles way over $500.00. We did find a few for under $100. But in this world of very reasonable $10-$25 wines, there were none to be found on this list. The food was good - not great. Certainly not worthy of the high priced entrees. And the side offerings - just as expensive. The only reason the 4 of us got out of there for about $70.00 per person was that we decided to go back to the apartment for dessert and coffee. Crown is not well marked. But that's okay. I'd strongly suggest people not try all that hard. There are better, much more reasonable places all around the city"

  • "It was a Sunday evening so it was pretty quiet. The drinks were perfect and the the servers very attentive. I had the beet salad and the scallop crudo. My sister had the ricotta gnudi, it was amazing. I would definitely go back."

  • "This is one of the best spots on the upper east side. I took my boss for drinks and dinner and it was exceptional. The staff were extremely friendly and offered many tasty selections which we chose. The cab (wine) from the bar was very good. It is collectively our new favorite spot (much more than just a restaurant)."

  • "Our recent trip to Crown for dinner was disappointing. While Crown offers a beautiful setting, the service was poor, the proportions miniscule, and the food just okay despite the exceedingly high prices. Hopefully they just had an off night but if this is the new norm, they won't survive in a city with so many great options, especially in this price range."

  • "Absolutely charming restaurant, with outstanding food, knowledgeable and kind staff who are consummate professionals, geat wine list--even by the glass...beautiful ambience with no one rushing you. A favourite."

  • "Disappointed at brunch. Have had dinner here many times. Its fantastic. They haven't got the brunch together yet. options are lame. I will still go back for Dinner anytime. Not for brunch,"

  • "Unfortunately not as good as the first time I went. The first time I went I loved it. This time the food was only so-so. I am going to try it agin though. Hopefully it will be better!"

  • "We ate here on Xmas eve so that may explain an essentially lackluster effort. Nothing was bad but nothing was great either."
    Dined on 12/24/2013
  • "Crown is wonderful to behold--almost secretly tucked into an eastside townhouse, it features warm, wood paneling and a club like atmosphere. But from there, the rest of the experience is not up to the ambience. Service is very unprofessional, with waiters rudely interrupting conversations and giving people another diner's order at every course. The food itself is only fair. Fish, for example, is overcooked, dry and tasteless."

  • "...perhaps, even, superior. We are certain to return again and again."

  • "Management and staff should learn how to manage noise level by talking to people who don't realize they are not alone n the restaurant. Wine list should be entirely changed. Ridiculous quality price ratio."

  • "Nice restaurant but cost is overpriced even for the upper east side."

  • "This is a very attractive place and very well located. It was busy but not packed during our visit, but the service was indifferent. For not being full, it was deafeningly loud, especially a nearby large table of women. There are too many other quieter places in the neighborhood to maker a repeat visit."

  • "The wine pour by the glass was extremely small compared to other restaurants of this caliber. I have been here many times and I can see they have just started doing so...we told the manager. This would be a deterrent from going back."

  • "I made this reservation to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. I called twice to make sure we wouldn't get sat next to the kitchen and that is exactly where we were sat. Additionally, no one told me when i booked the reservation that there would be a private party that night that would take over the entire back of the restaurant - the nicest part of the restaurant. Had I known this I would have went elsewhere. The food was another letdown. I ordered the burger which was a huge mistake. It had no taste. Huge disappointment. I wanted so badly to send it back but I was with my boyfriend and didn't want to make a scene as it was his birthday and didn't want to ruin the mood. Overall very disappointed."

  • "We came back to Crown because our last experience was so remarkable but we were unfortunately very disappointed this time. The tables were tightly placed, the noise level was disruptive & our waiter was hard to find and difficult to understand. The food was just as delicious as we remembered but it was not worth the effort given all the other obstacles."

  • "I've been to Crown at least 4 times. The first time I went I loved it, but since then every time I go, something seems to go array. The last 3 times I went there, they have run out of most the main items on the menu. This time my lamb chops came over cooked and extremely fatty. The cote de boeuf was cold. Not to mention that for the portion sizes, the food is bit on the pricey side, even for a restaurant on the UES of this caliber. We brought out of town guest and besides loving the look & atmosphere of the restaurant, they were far from impressed of the food and service. I think we have had our fill of Crown and won't be returning."

  • "Arrived with no expectations except the hope of an early seating which was graciously granted with a precious romantic corner location. Atmosphere was cosy and festive without being ostentatious. Dim lighting overcomes rather close-knit seating. Service was attentive, precise, unencumbered, quick. All food courses were savory, freshly prepared, exceeding all expectations. Wine selections and special drinks were excellent. Friendly, inviting staff that engages a return visit. The bar appears to be a quietly superb asset."

  • "We went at 3pm on Thanksgiving Day. We stood around the not busy lobby for five minutes before they took us to our table - and then ignored us until I got up to ask that someone take our order. The waiter was marginally pleasant but did not seem happy to be working on Thanksgiving. The service was fast - perhaps too fast. The three course fixed price menu ($95) was served as though in a rush to get us out. They were removing the plates as if there were a rush for our table (not so). It simply did not feel right for a "classy joint". The food was the saving grace. Everything we ate was exceptionally good. We violated tradition and enjoyed lamb chops and steak as well the turkey. The veggies and the dessert were equally delicious"

  • "Dining at Crown on Thanksgiving was just the delightful experience we had envisioned. The brownstone decor provides the lovely, wood panelled, Manhattan east side residence ambiance that was perfect for a special occassion. Service was welcoming, friendly and eficient, even on an evening crowded with what seemed like neighvorhood locals, but without being overpowering. The fixed menu was delicious, wondefrul agnolotti starter and of course, turkey and stuffing like the home made must we had expected on the holiday. Look forward to visiting again next time in NY."

  • "I have eaten at pretty much every five star restaurant in New York. Crown is something extra special. It goes without saying that the quality and presentation of the food is perfection. The room is warm, dim, gracious and inviting. The maitre'd is welcoming and knows you by name after only one visit. The staff is attentive and courteous without hovering or bothering. It is the perfect evening and culinary experience. Every time I dine there I feel like it couldn't get any better---and then it does!"

  • "Crown is cool, but off a bit. The service is friendly but painfully slow. The food is good, but nothing special. The wine list is too expensive for its quality. On the upside, the ambiance is lively and reasonably sophisticated, so we had fun, but we were just underwhelmed overall. We'll probably try it one more time to see if the food and service can match the mood. We hope it does."

  • "Crown delivered on a great night out. From the first course, and then the second, it is truffle season you know, and then the third everyone was prepared and served to perfection. Service was extremely professional and attentive. Andrea did a wonderful job of taking care of us. And Scott at the front of the restaurant was an excellent host."
