Diner Reviews
  • "Met for lunch with out of state family visitors and daughter who works in the area. Food was awesome. Burgers, salads, spicy chicken wraps done perfectly. Restaurant and bar very appealing. Look forward to next visit."

  • "I have eaten here twice....brunch and lunch. For brunch all 12 people at the table had excellent meals, perfectly prepared and delicious! For lunch all 4 people had the exact same wonderful experience. The service on both visits was outstanding. I recommend the Croton Madame for brunch and the Octoous Ceviche for lunch."

  • "Service was very attentive but the restaurant was so noisy that it was hard to hear the conversation at the table. Food was just OK."

  • "We stopped in for a quick bite. We had 3 appetizers - all good. The crab cakes were very good. Can't say much else except it's very noisy in there."

  • "Excellent midtown spot for a mid-day business lunch. The food's quite good. The only drawbacks are that sound levels are a little energetic and table space can be a little cramped, but those are minor in the overall picture. "

  • "Came here for a business lunch. Quick seating and service. Noise level was adequate to have a conversation. "

  • "Great lunch spot for midtown. Awesome service. Fresh delicious food.. You really can't go wrong. Would love to see some happy hour specials and I would be able to bring half my office there on Thursday nights!"

  • "It's hard to fault a restaurant for having a blow-out happy hour. Its easier to fault us for choosing Croton Reservoir for a pre-theater dinner at 6:30 on a Friday night. The first table offered was near the entrance, opposite the main bar, which was a-roar at the time. So we asked for something quieter. We got a recessed table near the rear, but right near the top of stairs that led down to another bar whose noise level made the upstairs see like a service at a Friends Meeting House (they are very quiet). The food was quite good and promptly delivered; our delightful waitress made us forget the din with her attentiveness and infectious good humor. I'd go back anytime, but after 8:00pm."

  • "I love meeting my friends here for drinks and food after work or before theater. I've been there many, many times over the years, and they never disappoint. The food is excellent and the service friendly and efficient. The bar can be a bit noisy, but it just adds to the festive atmosphere. Have a good time!"

  • "Great place for quick meal away from the theater crush but close enough to walk to the show."

  • "Croton usually comes to mind for after work drinks and a quick dinner. Conveniently located to our midtown work and theater district. I think friends are tired of my suggesting Croton but so far we have not been disappointed with the food and service."

  • "Great food but the noise level is horrid. Husband and I had to text message each other to talk at dinner. "

  • "While it can be a bit loud early in the evening, Croton Reservoir Tavern is a favorite meeting place for friends or business. The bar is long and inviting. You can also sit at the nearby tables and enjoy the great food. A wide range of choices, we've often just had drinks and different appetizers. The whiskey list is fantastic -- I go there to try new things. Have often sat for hours enjoying drinks, eating little by little, and having wide ranging conversations."

  • "This is my 2nd time having brunch here. The server was wonderful and the food was amazing!"

  • "We went Friday during happy hour, the bar scene was busy. The dining room wasn't full, we sat large round booth near the door. It blocked off most of window, but my view was very off putting, smokers stood right in front of the window. The kale salad was delicious, as was the huge crab cake. My son had the chicken pot pie, but said it was more like stew, very thin sauce. He liked the puff pastry on top. Husband and I shared the filet mignon pasta, the sauce was supposed to contain horseradish, think they forgot the horseradish. It tasted fine, but when you are expecting a zing from the horseradish it was a little bit disappointing. It was a good place to go for a bite to eat, but ask to sit away from the window."

  • "Place has pretty decent food, and if you go with a group downstairs is the best place to be as it was not loud at all. "
    Dined on 4/24/2014
  • "Went there with family for pre theatre. 10 out of 12 dishes were outstanding, didn't care for the lobster bisque so much. Someone needs to tell them to TURN THE MUSIC DOWN! I realize it was Happy Hour but I think the owner should remind the bartender that it is a Tavern not a Nightclub, that is what the basement is for. My third visit there, will still do lunch."

  • "Very loud and noisy bar scene with no place to eat and enjoy some food. The menu is vey limited. Service was decent. Not a place to relax at all."

  • "My girlfriends and I were pleasantly surprised when we ate here for lunch pre-theater. We truly enjoyed our food. I had the kale salad with seared tuna on top. It was delicious, healthy and very satisfying. We were short on time as our train was delayed, and they were able to get us out in plenty of time, even with ordering two courses. The only downside was the noise level."

  • "Been here twice and both times were not disappointed. Food is great. Service is Great and we were going to a show so there was not problem with getting in and out in time to get to the show early. Love this place will be sure to go again and again"

  • "This little bar / restaurant is lively and fun. The food here is excellent; much better than typical pub fare. I had the salmon and my husband had the sirloin. Tasty !!! Would definitely recommend."

  • "Not quite a bar, a step up from a coffee shop, this place serves a good function in a neighborhood where it can be tough to avoid chain restaurants or take-out. Their kale salad is quite delicious, and you can feel self-righteous about its being healthy. Or you can just get a burger and be done with it! Prices are not cheap, but you're paying for location."

  • "The roast beef was fatty and like shoe leather. Could not eat it."

  • "Great friendly service! The food is good for a bar and reasonably priced. Did a nice job for the Superbowl, as well!"

  • "We were a talkative group of four with lots of questions and distractions, and despite these challenges our server could not have been nicer or more effective. He was attentive and responsive, kept our various beverages and special requests coming quickly and checked in with us often without being a bother. The atmosphere was festive, the food delightful and the service outstanding. We will definitely be back."

  • "We were early for a 12:30 brunch reservation though we were not the bar's first arrival. So it seemed odd that the staff was initially in a fog. Not a deep REMS sleep by any stretch but definitely, I don't know...thoughtful yet inattentive. The Bloody Mary's we asked for were quite good once we got them. The water we were offered came after some unusual delay too. But it can be said that once everybody woke up the staff clicked. The food also took the long way out of the kitchen but once presented was hot, delicious and very filling. The staff was helpful when I asked for the almonds to be removed from my brownie sundae and coffee was served hot. I'll come back but later in the day."

  • "We came upon this place just because were were in the area. Granted the server was new (as she announced it was her first day) her knowledge of the menu was very, very lacking. The food was good, although the sweet potato fries were severely burned. Portions were large and filling, although it was odd that the menu did not have appetizers. A good place if you can't find anything else."

  • "Tables too close, and really loud- before the band..."

  • "I was researching a restaurant for my boyfriend and I to eat at before going to see a show on Broadway, as many reviews for the restaurants in the surrounding theater district area weren't so good. I wouldn't say that it is a romantic spot, as the bar and dining area are situated right next to each other, but the food is really very good, as are the drinks, which to me is important because I don't like spending money on a bad meal. We went on a Thursday night, so there were a lot of after work people catching drinks and dinner. The waiter was very attentive and friendly and our food came quickly. I recommend the FILET MIGNON TAGLIATELLE and SPINACH, ARTICHOKE, CORN DIP! I will definitely return again."

  • "Nice atmosphere, good food, perfect business lunch spot. Historic character."
    Dined on 1/6/2014
  • "I was shocked and dismayed as I entered Croton Reservoir Tavern - not as depicted online. Sports games were blaring and the more than rowdy patrons at and near the bar were ROARING!!! I would have walked out and let the reservation go, but the weather was bad and I did not want to look for another place. My friend and I were seated as far from the bar as was possible. The ROARING! flared up and died down throughout our meal. It was very difficult to hold a conversation. The service in general was a bit slow and not very attentive. The food was was nothing that couldn't be had in a million other places. So, if you're looking for a place to have brunch with a friend in the Bryant Park area where you can hear each other, keep looking."
