A word from Crispo
Chef and owner Frank Crispo opened Crispo Restaurant in the heart of Chelsea and the West Village in the summer of 2002.

Our 150 seats create a lively, warm and friendly atmosphere where you can enjoy our signature Northern Italian cuisine.

We were nominated in 2002 for "Best New Restaurant" by Time Out magazine, and received an award for "Best Spaghetti Carbonara" by New York Magazine in 2004.

Food is not our only passion. Our extensive wine list covers the major regions of Italy and several other countries beyond. For enthusiasts, we have a full bar stocked with grappa, amaros, aperitifs and digestifs.

Come join us for dinner in our main dining room, or in our outdoor garden space. It remains open year long. With this newest addition to Crispo Restaurant you will truly feel like you are not in New York.

I picked this restaurant at random based on its location, and I feel the restaurant gods were smiling on me that day. What a find! This is one of the most charming restaurants I've visited in the city -- lovely, warm atmosphere, gorgeous and funky back garden, excellent food and service. I highly recommend it.

I'd have give this 5 stars, however the bus boy spilled my wine when he was clearing the table, and there was no mention of replacing the wine. Later on, 1/2 glass of wine appeared. The right thing to do would've been the server come, apologize (he didn't speak english, but did try to apologize) and replace the wine with a full glass. I also felt a bit rushed (again the busser) because my companion finished before me and he started clearing. The food is wonderful (mozzarella risotto balls) and the garden atmosphere is like a calm breath of Europe in Manhattan.

My sister and I began by sharing a piping hot and delicious order of fried calamari and zucchini. The appetizer appeared almost immediately which was jarring (though to our server's credit she did not rush the rest of the meal). The much-publicized spaghetti carbonara was disappointing. Because a single poached egg creates the sauce, it was dry. The menu listed hangar steak but the kitchen served another cut - not as flavorful or interesting but good. The portion was large and was served with a generous order of fries. We did not stay for dessert because by 8:30 PM the noise level was overwhelming and it was hard to hear one another talk.

I selected the artichoke All Romana & the Black Truffle Ricotta Ravioli. My companion had the Burata di puglia & the Spinach & Short Rib Ravioli. We both had the Italian cheese cake. All our food was carefully prepared & presented. The dinner was just the right lightness for before an evening in the theatre. Our waitress did seek out any answers even though she didn't have the answers herself. We did remind our server we need to leave for the theatre and this time slipped past her such that we ended rushing at the end. Overall I would recommend Crispo. We sat in the garden room which is quite pleasant. There were only 3 tables occupied. Because it is a small place, I imagine it could be quite nosy when a full house.

I revisited crispo for my sister's 25th bday. Was easy to reserve for a large group of 12 (I reserved for 5 on open table and then called to change it). Service was excellent. Outdoor area in the back was wonderful. Food was outstanding. Truffle ravioli had a good texture and just the right amount of truffle. Italian cheesecake was at the right density and sweetness. Will definitely come back again.

  • Refused to move table at 5:30 PM

Patio was empty at 5:30 PM other than 2 other tables. We were told we would have our choice of seating. Hostess had a woman bring us to a table on top of the two other seated tables under an overhang. Asked if we could move to another empty table for more privacy and was denied stating tables were reserved. I stated we would be leaving within 1 hour as we were going to a play. Still refused. By the time we left only 1 of the tables were occupied. This was a birthday and they refused to accommodate us when the tables were NOT reserved until much later, and after we left. Also, at any given time at least 3, sometimes 4, staff members stood lined up along the wall staring you down. Pretty uncomfortable.

We were a party of 4. Our waiter JOSE gave us the check while we had our deserts and capotcinos. we wanted to order a after dinner drink but he gave us the BUMS RUSH, not even a thank You. We always had better service at Crispo. We are not strangers to Crispo. We got a great hello from the Bartender. We hope Mr Frank Crispo will talk to JOSE and see what his problem is.

This was my 2nd time going there. Food: I got the pasta with mushrooms the first time - Fresh made pasta and delicious sauce. 2nd time, I broke down and got their spaghetti carbonara - outstanding. For a simple dish, they made it truly special. Well worth trying. They were very accommodating to a group of 7. They were attentive and communicative. My group were real foodies and they tried the bone marrow oreganata - think of it as meat butter and it did not disappoint. Overall, I would say it is a definite must try.

Crispo's rating does not match that of NYC's elite food scene. Four stars is overly generous. The food is plain. The restaurant is blah, and the service is nothing to get excited about. Just another tourist trap.

The food was sub par and the service was awful our waitress had the personality of a piece of day old bread. We will not be going back anytime soon unfortunately we thought we found a little gem for ourselves but not.

By the end, the food made up for the service, but I hate when my meal starts off on a bad note. Initially, everything was ordered separately and there was a huge gap between receiving one thing and ordering the next, so I quickly realized I was going to have to be pushy and keep talking to keep my server's attention long enough to order drinks and appetizers. The bread is horrible - cold and hard and awful. The truffle mozzarella was amazing. I ordered the pesto salmon which was incredible and my date ordered the truffle ravioli which was also incredible but too rich for me to have ordered. The creme brulee and dark chocolate tasting was the perfect end and a great mix of sweet and not so sweet!

1st time here, relatively slow & quiet when seated. By the time we left we couldn't hear each other talk. The bussers and floor staff hovered and hovered. Approached table every 10 seconds looking to see if we had an empty plate. VERY DISTURBING! Entrees arrived when we had not finished apps. Very bad timing of waitress, why did she fire the entrees while we were still on our apps? And do the bussers and food runners who were checking our table so frequently think they are invisible? Approaching the table over & over, most disruptive and unwelcome. Not hospitable. My pasta was stuck together at the ends, clumpy. Obviously I will not return.

We had the fried risotto/mozzarella balls which were delicious eaten with the tomato sauce. My husband had the ravioli with the truffle sauce, which was super delicious, & I had the linguini carbonara. I had a delicious passion fruit margarita & my husband the Toscano wine. The zeppole for dessert was disappointing. It had a bland flavor & the chocolate sauce was too bitter. the cappuccino was just ok.

Had dinner here with two friends. Unfortunately, our waiter was not as on top of things and the service was incredibly slow. We were in no rush, but when one of our entrees was forgotten and arrived 15 minutes after the other two, there was barely an apology. The food seemed overpriced for the quality of the service. Don't want to blame the whole restaurant though. One server even asked if he could help ours and he turned it down. I think we were just unlucky, but still there was no management paying attention so I'm hesitant to give them my money again.

We were in New York from the UK for a couple of weeks on a family holiday with our daughters. It was a Friday night in July and not surprisingly the restaurant was very busy. We'd booked a table for 9pm. Located on the lower level/basement, you walk down a few steps from the street. The staff were very welcoming and we were taken to our table immediately. As one review pointed out, the tables are quite close, but that wasn't a problem for us. Along one wall was banquette seating and table in the middle of the room. Service was very attentive and the food excellent. There was a good general menu and a wide choice of specials. We'd been to the Union Street Cafe a few days earlier and this was every bit as good.
