A word from Criollo at Hotel Monteleone
New Orleans in its soul is a true blending of many cultures. The European influences, namely Spanish, Italian & French, coupled with prominent contributions of Caribbean & African heritage, have produced one of America's greatest indigenous cuisines, Creole.

Criollo, the Spanish word for Creole and the name chosen for the new restaurant, represents the amalgam of cultures reflected in our cooking and the unique tastes that comprise Louisiana cuisine.

Fashioned with Louisiana & the Gulf South region's abundant bounty of fresh, home grown products from the land & sea, Criollo's ingredient-driven seasonal menu is designed to offer creative dishes inspired by culinary traditions & an appreciation of today's contemporary tastes.

Diner Reviews
  • "I have loved this hotel all my life, but on this occasion the service was poor, such as no spoons for the gumbo, no bread, etc. the muffulettas were an insult to that name. When the bill came and I took out a credit card, then I was told one could not use credit cards that day! I was not told beforehand mI used up all my cash as I never carry checks, and had no t left for the garage. I shall never return, although this was my third time here. There were only two other persons I. The restaurant. Janice Donaldson"

  • "There were several functions at the hotel that evening and the Carousel Bar was packed and extremely noisy. Thank goodness all that noise didn't quite make it into the restaurant. The food was good and the staff jovial and helpful."

  • "This is our second time at Criollo - first was for Revillion. The food was delicious! The waiter started off really good - however, once our order was taken - he disappeared until it was time for the check."

  • "I have lived in New Orleans all my life and I find Criollo an old New Orleans dining experience. Very comfortable, great service, great food. This is the second time I have eaten here and look forward to going again. The drum with shrimp was outstanding!"

  • "The Criollo is a wonderful restaurant! My husband and I enjoyed each course from the appetizer to the desert. The staff was very attentive and willing to make any changes if we requested. The food was absolutely marvelous - changes needed! I asked if the chef would tell me how to make the salad! He came to the table to tell me how he created the dressing! Amazing! New Orleans is a magnificent food experience - Criollo being the Best in town."

  • "I'm a Chef who took 14 out to dinner- all Chefs or those that work in the food industry. we all agreed that Criollo was fantastic for both food and service. I've eaten at many of the best restaurants in New Orleans, of which there are many, and this ranks in my top five favorites.Enough said!"

  • "We loved this restaurant. We started our evening at the Carousel Bar with fantastic cocktails and then stepped next door to the restaurant. The decor was very nice. The service was excellent and our waiter was wonderful and made some awesome recommendations. Our food was cooked perfectly. Overall a wonderful dining experience."

  • "We made a reservation at the Criollo because we were staying at The Hotel Monteleone (which we enjoyed immensely). The waiter warned us off the snapper and we should have listened. It was barely edible (my husband didn't eat his). No flavor. Chewy, not crispy. My mother had the duck and it was good. Grouper also not great but better than snapper. Turtle soup was vey good. Gumbo so-so. Very disappointing for a restaurant in the heart of the French Quarter. Way too expensive for the quality of the food."

  • "A relaxed, upscale atmosphere with delicious food and excellent service - it was the perfect choice for our Saturday family gathering. The menu had something for everyone and conversation was easy as the noise level was low. We will definitely return to Criollo."

  • "We had high expectations for Criollo, and we left feeling "meh." Our server started off very energetic and then started disappearing for long periods of time. My duck, which had been ordered medium, came out very well done and dry. My husband's steak was good. We were looking to order after dinner drinks and desserts, but after waiting 30 minutes to see our server, we just decided to leave. To be fair to our server, the restaurant appeared to be extremely understaffed, which would account for the lack of service we received. And I will say that the cocktails were very well made and tasty."

  • "The breakfast menu selection is great. Several Benedict dishes to choose from with local flavor. The blueberry scones with lemon curd delicious. They do stop serving breakfast at 11:00 to close, then reopen at 11:30 for lunch. Would be perfect if only they had jazz music."

  • "The drinks were great. However, I had the duck entree and it was very over cooked, the sauce was not the best, and the rice was flavorless. I had the dobash cake for dessert. it was slightly dry and there was no chocolate ganache on it. Appetizers were ok but small and not worth the price. The service was very good though."

  • "I had a good shrimp and crawfish gumbo. Entree of red snapper that was ample and delicious. I was able to get a pisco sour drink which is not available at most bars. "

  • "My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday brunch. I was a little disappointed there was no jazz music. The fresh fruit and juice were wonderful, especially the pineapple. Also, the selection of breads was magnificent. Had asked the waitress for orange juice which we didn't get until we asked again. She acted as though that was the first she had heard of the order. Great food though. "

  • "This was a really enjoyable meal. It was our first time at this restaurant. The service was great. I had a duck dish and my wife had the lamb dish. Both were very good entrees. The menu is not extensive but what they do, they do very well. "

  • "We enjoyed a lovely birthday dinner as visitors to the city of New Orleans. It was fun to enter through the Carousel bar, but have a nice table tucked away from the busy hotel entrance. The seafood was delicious. Wasn't a huge fan of the Turtle Soup though."

  • "I dined here with a group of five. I probably enjoyed my food the least - although it was still good; all the others raved about their choices. It's comfortable, a good place to talk, and there's a fine bar next door for a pre- or post-dinner drink."

  • "Charming dining room in a beautiful historic hotel in the french quarter. The pork chop was the best I have ever had. We had a free night in New Orleans and thanks to Open Table I was able to choose this dining experience. Go early and check out the revolving bar."

  • "The wait staff is wonderful. One of our waiters made specialty drinks for our 13 year old and he loved them. We always stay at the hotel but, have never eaten dinner there. We loved the food and will eat there again."

  • "My wife and I spent Mother's Day weekend in New Orleans and stayed at the Hotel Monteleone. We chose Criolo for dinner, and were very glad we did. Everything about this experience was excellent - a truly memorable experience."

  • "If you're on vacation in the French Quarter, I strongly recommend walking through the elegant lobby of the Hotel Monteleone, then have some truly fine Italian food at the Criollo. The service, menu and food are outstanding. The pizza was unforgettable!"

  • "The big problem was the host who seated Us He was very snooty and not friendly It was a Sunday night Not crowded And I specifically asked for a window table There were 3 available but would not seat Us there At first he tried to seat us in a very dark Part of the restaurant I asked for the window again and was told It was for 4. People We were there for 2 hours and the tables were still empty The rest of the experience was good but I will not go back"

  • "Our waiter was assigned way too many tables to do a good job. His helper was clearly either inexperienced or new. We were seated about six inches from the water station. The food wasn't good. A beet and radish salad had way too much going on - too many random ingredients thrown together - and was too spicy. We ordered fish - grouper and swordfish - which neither of us finished. Both dishes were bathed in peculiar sauces that didn't compliment the fish. We waited endlessly at the end for both someone to remove our plates and to bring the dessert menu. In the end we decided not to order dessert because it was taking forever to take our order. This experience was too thumbs down."

  • "We went here based off other reviews and we were not disappointed. I had the turtle soup as a appetizer and duck for main course. My mom had oysters as an app and swordfish as main course. All were excellently and memorably prepared. Fabulous, personalized service; we were never left waiting for anything. The bread pudding duo for dessert perfectly culminated the meal. A must have, especially in NOLA!! If one is seeking an after dinner drink, they have a nice list of ports, or you can venture over to the Carrousel Bar (which slowly rotates) in the same hotel. It is very "in" and has a fun atmosphere. Highly recommend Criollo!! "

  • "We have been coming to New Orleans for Jazz Fest for 22 years and have sampled all the best places and this is now on our return list for next year. Three of us were seated in a beautiful side room with very comfortable chairs. The service was very attentive and friendly and the food was excellent. Between us, we ordered the Shrimp, Crab and Avocado appetizer, BBQ Shrimp with Boudin and the Forager Salad - all were fabulous. Two of us ordered the Grilled Grouper and one had the Shellfish Coo-Be-Yon. All received high marks. Seems like a great place in general. The Carousel Bar was very busy - but not rowdy. Great energy - great ambience - great find!!"

  • "They just seemed to misstep all through the night. Some food was very good. I was served the wrong plate first. Not meant for anyone at our table. When served my correct order the fish was dry. "

  • "The perdito pass snapper at Criollo was the best fish we had in New Orleans, and the smoked quail risotto was superb. The service was excellent, the wine recommendations were perfect with the food (and well priced) and we could actually have a conversation - the noise level was sparkly enough to feel like a party but not loud enough to preclude a conversation. All in all a delightful evening. "

  • "Probably won't go to this restaurant again even though the food was good, the service was not. There are just too many high end dining options in New Orleans where you get both."
    Dined on 4/26/2014
  • "Very solid food, though short of "spectacular," with some creative dishes on the menu. Excellent service. Would return again. "

  • "We enjoyed our dinner so much that we reserved again for several nights later. Unfortunately, the second experience was nothing like the first. The noise from the bar was so bad that I couldn't wait to leave. Would not go back again unless the restaurant was blocked from the bar. This wasn't just a matter of not being able to converse, I felt like I was under assault."
