A word from Criollo at Hotel Monteleone
New Orleans in its soul is a true blending of many cultures. The European influences, namely Spanish, Italian & French, coupled with prominent contributions of Caribbean & African heritage, have produced one of America's greatest indigenous cuisines, Creole.

Criollo, the Spanish word for Creole and the name chosen for the new restaurant, represents the amalgam of cultures reflected in our cooking and the unique tastes that comprise Louisiana cuisine.

Fashioned with Louisiana & the Gulf South region's abundant bounty of fresh, home grown products from the land & sea, Criollo's ingredient-driven seasonal menu is designed to offer creative dishes inspired by culinary traditions & an appreciation of today's contemporary tastes.

The bar was a bit louder than normal due to college football, but that was to be expected and didn't detract from our evening. Food was very, very good. But the Perdido Pass Snapper needed a bit more seasoning. Beef Filet was excellent and don't sleep on dessert, save room because the 3 Chocolate Tourrine was fantastic as was the banana split. Service was excellent as well. Will definitely dine again.

We had a friends in from Ohio celebrating a 50th birthday and we were asked to pick a place to celebrate. After hearing good things about Criollo we decided to book a table for 12. This turned out to be a great choice. We were giving a private room with Rock Star treatment. The food was amazing as well as the service. Our guest wanted Bananas Foster for desert and it was not on the menu. Our waiter asked the chef and he made the dish. Everything we tried was incredible from the Cesar salad with fresh anchovies to the Foie Gras. I highly recommend that you give Criollo a try.

The Criollo as stated is in the Hotel Monteleone on Royal Street. While it is quite famous for its Carousel lounge, the dining room experience was wonderful. Joseph, our waiter, was quite knowledgeable regarding all aspects of the menu, especially since our granddaughter has a gluten allergy. He recommended the redfish and none of us were disappointed. He was attentive as was the rest of the staff. The creme brulee was quite good!

The entrees could use some work. For the price, I would expect more. Both the appetizer and the soup were very good. The cocktails were excellent. The dessert was delicious. The servers were very amicable, however the attentiveness could use some polishing. My suggestion would be to have dinner elsewhere and finish at Criollo for dessert and cocktails. Hang out at the adjoining Carrousel bar afterwards.

We were really impressed with this charming venue at a favorite haunt of Faulkner and Capote. Lots of memorabilia, lovely ambience, gracious lobby access to the restaurant itself. Seating is small intimate booths or traditional tables; atmosphere is soft but not low lighting, gorgeous ceilings, good dining area separations; quiet enough to hear your escort, but warm chatter to remind you of your fellow diners. Excellent menu with highly recommended seafood entrees, real anchovies in the Caesar salad, fabulous banana split dessert with praline crunch [large portion and should be shared]. Hands down - or thumbs up - our favorite dining experience among a half dozen dinners in the same price point on this visit.

We dined here for lunch. Our party had the cobb salad, spinach ravioli, crabmeat & avocado, louie salad, and the chef's special white bean and spinach soup. Everyone enjoyed their meal. The chef's soup special was delicious! We had to wait a little bit for our server to acknowledge and take our drink orders, but once he did, he then took great care of us. Leon offered suggestions about the menu and was a great waiter. He made the experience very pleasurable! We enjoyed it.

We had a fantastic dinner here, the red fish was perfectly done (i.e. not overcooked). Make sure you try the vieux carre here. They make it well at Carousel bar and serve it on the rocks, which was different than other cocktail bars, but quite good.

I thought the food was excellent. Loved the pompano. I thought the gumbo and the Cajun eggs Benedict were not as spicy as I would have preferred. Service was friendly and efficient. (On my first breakfast there, I asked for a coffee spoon, not realizing the rather large-bowled spoon was for coffee. It was quickly substituted by a busboy without any question. Breakfast service was perhaps a little friendlier than I actually prefer.) I was disappointed that the dinner crowd looked sparse. Towards the end of my dinner, tablecloths were being removed from a number of tables. I wish that had not happened.

Salads and bisques as well. Entrees were solid. We tried all of the desserts and especially liked the bread pudding and fig gelato! Phenomenal service.

we were staying in the Monteleone Hotel for a wedding. After having a fabulous breakfast experience, we decided to have dinner at the Criollo as well -- and it was wonderful! I was looking for great seafood that wasn't fried, without the Bourbon street nonsense. Criollo was fantastic. I had limited expectations for a hotel restaurant, and I wasn't even a guest at the hotel. The oysters stuffed with crab and shrimp retained the delight of raw oysters, but with an extra flair. The redfish was also superb. Even better was the service.

We choose Criolla as our first dinner on our honeymoon to New Orleans. It was convenient as we stay at the Monteleone but the food lived up to the pictures and description on their website. The service was great and professional by all involved. The food was beautifully presented a tasted even better. We enjoyed their shrimp, crab, and avocado appetizer and seasonal salad and I enjoyed the snapper dish while my wife had the redfish. Both were perfectly prepared and nicely presented with appropriate sauces and vegetables. For dessert we each had gelatto. I took a walk on the wild side trying the ricotta-fig, while my wife enjoyed chocolate. They were served in delicious little waffle-almond cups which were quite special.

Located in a hotel, but very good food, European size dishes, pretty good wine list, very good service. The waiter saw that the 4 of us were having a good conversation over diner and he didn't disturb us by checking every 4 mins if everything was fine, but quietly jumped in whenever necessary. Would defenitely recommend this!

one of the few open reservations last minute. The place was half empty but still felt lively with the nearby bar scene. Service was great. Had the pork chop amazing. Soft she'll crab off menu special not so great. Everything else off the menu was fantastic including the bread pudding. Good wine selection, we ordered drinks from the bar. Service was fantastic. Waiters knew the menu well and made great recommendations. Would recommend to others.

Beautiful restaurant although a tad bit expensive. The service was very friendly and professional. The staff made you feel welcomed and was very attentive. The food was good, but not truly memorable. I guess when I read so many rave reviews my expectations were a mile high and what I actually experience wasn't at that level. However, it's an excellent dining experience and a good time.

We celebrated a rare chance to lunch together and found the Criolla on the Coolinary list for August - the tomato/mozzarella appetizer was fresh and tasty as well as artfully presented... the chicken dish was probably the best chicken I've EVER had! and the sheephead fish had a wonderful supporting cast on the plate that included fresh greens with a delicious citrus dressing. We went there for dinner on a very busy Saturday night. There were 2 big events in the city, and one particularly taking place on Royal Street. The scene was very vibrant, but we got a nice cozy booth and didn't seem to notice. We were celebrating my husband's birthday. Our waiter was excellent and seems to really enjoy his job. Service was great! The gumbo and the sweet potato soups were delicious. Our entrees were good (I got swordfish for the first time) and the best part was dessert! It was a white chocolate creme brulee in puff pastry, and it was to die for! I love Criollo and I enjoy having a drink (or two) at the adjacent Carousel Bar. Well done!

I have loved this hotel all my life, but on this occasion the service was poor, such as no spoons for the gumbo, no bread, etc. the muffulettas were an insult to that name. When the bill came and I took out a credit card, then I was told one could not use credit cards that day! I was not told beforehand mI used up all my cash as I never carry checks, and had no t left for the garage. I shall never return, although this was my third time here. There were only two other persons I. The restaurant. Janice Donaldson
