A word from Crane's Tavern Steakhouse & Seafood
Hilton Head Island's destination for beef & seafood lovers, Crane's Tavern & Steakhouse serves only the finest USDA Prime Grade Beef & fresh local seafood. An old English bar & heart of pine floors create the setting with warm, inviting service & an award-winning wine list.
The restaurant represents 4 generations & over 100 years of restaurateurs in the Crane family dating back to 1908, when an Irish immigrant, Frank Crane founded Crane's Tavern in Philadelphia. After prohibition Frank's son, Francis & his brothers opened the famed establishment at 333 Queen Lane, where his son, Hank worked until 1969. That year Hank ventured out on his own & opened a Crane's Tavern in Ambler, PA. & then purchased the Surf City Hotel on Long Beach Island, NJ creating yet another establishment with the Crane namesake. In 1999 he & his daughter, Beth Anne opened Crane's Tavern & Steakhouse on Hilton Head Island, SC where it has become a local favorite

Diner Reviews
  • "Four of us enjoyed a terrific dinner at Crane's. We were all familiar with Crane's in the Philadelphia area but had yet to try the Hilton Head spot. We're delighted with our experience and can't wait to return. Food was prepared perfectly--Prime Rib was terrific as was Shrimp and Grits (a first for one of the group). Sides of Scalloped Potatoes, Creamed Spinach and Sauteed Zucchini were all great. Do not miss the Fried Apple Pie. This could become a neighborhood favorite for us."

  • "We had heard great things about this place, but it did not live up to expectations. We were dissapointed in the food. Granted we ordered seafood, and they are known for steaks, but we can get great steaks at home. The fish was bland and the sauce was super rich."

  • "The food was ok, but the service was "entertaining". Ok, service was slow, really slow, so dont go hungry or you might not survive until the entre' comes. Then when our food finally arrived, the waiter lost his grip and accidentally hurled a 10oz filet at my 83 year old father. It bounced several times on the table and then we howled in laughter as the waiter tried to delicately pick it up. The best comment was my father who said "please dont take it back, I'll starve to death waiting for it". All in all, it was an ok experience because I haven't laughed that hard in years. Oh and in addition to the runaway steak.....I ordered a crab cake....along with my steak which arrived after I had my complete dinner!!"

  • "We came for the prime rib and were not dissapointed. They don't "do" baked potatoes but the scalloped potatoes were really good and creamy. Our waitress was very pleasant and took excellent care of us. We also shared some sauteed button mushrooms, also well prepared. No room for dessert sorry to say."

  • "I chose Crane's based on a "word of mouth" recommendation. The cost was a consideration b/c I'm not Warren Buffet. Be that as it may, the hostess seated us promptly; she was pleasant and made us feel at ease. All staff members were professional. The food was impeccable. We had prime rib, steak and tuna; all dishes were presented beautifully and more importantly, they were DELICIOUS! You will be glad you dined here."

  • "Our reservation was for 6:45. We were sat next to a table that had 4 kids. 3 of them were mostly good but the toddler kept crying. We were impressed that the hostess came and got the kid and took her out for a few minutes. But, when the kid started up again, the parents didn't take the kid out. For the price and type of restaurant, I want the atmosphere to be quiet and cozy. If we go back we won't make as early a reservation as to avoid small kids."

  • "Food was great. Service was slow and just "off" in general. Soup didn't come with salad. Food made up for it."

  • "We had unbelievable service during our dining experience. I was skeptical at first noticing our server was waiting on a large group table(16)along with two other tables. She was amazing!!! Her name is Donna so if you dine at Cranes I would recommend requesting her as your server. The food was outstanding too!!! We will be back!!!"

  • "We've enjoyed many excellent meals at the various Crane's locations and the Hilton Head location is another to add to our list. Their steak is delicious, tender and dependable. Their calves liver, my husband's favorite, is also outstanding. The atmosphere is great for families, friends and couples and the bar is fun and friendly. Make it a point to visit Crane's when in the Hilton Head Island vicinity. Not too far from Bluffton either!"

  • "Our food was great from the awesome prime rib, tilapia to the spinach salad. The receptionist was very sweet, and sociable. She went out if her way to talk with us. The waiter was not friendly or helpful. He didn't even tell us his name. I would give this place another shot bc the food was great and maybe he was just having a bad day."

  • "Crane's is our favorite restaurant on Hilton Head Island. The food is consistently extremely good and the service is great. Be sure to add a crab cake to your steak/prime rib dinner!"

  • "We have not visited Cranes for several years, only because there are so many choices on Hilton Head. Went for the early dining menu and it was very good. 3 in our party had the prime rib-a very nice sized portion, perfectly done and tasty. Delicious warm bread is served and the sides are quite good. Service was professional and efficient."

  • "This restaurant is a favorite with locals. It is well worth finding -- but.... be careful, you can easily ride right by. There is a varied menu, but Cranes is best known for its outstanding steaks/beef. Early bird dining is offered and the selections typically include meat & fish, plus... the price includes a glass of pre-selected wines."

  • "Crane's Tavern has always served fabulous prime beef. Their meals are not ala carte as so many prime steakhouse are. They are served with a choice of potato and a veggie. Their onion soup is excellent, too."

  • "Having visited Hilton Head each year since 1989, Cranes has always been on bucket list, yet for some reason this was first time visit. How very, very disappointing. This place is tired. From personnel to furnishings and especially the food, everything has little to excite. Each plate's presentation appeared to have been formed with an ice cream scoop, plopped on a plate individually with no effort to please the eye. Someone needs to return to chef's school. This was first AND LAST visit until some changes are observed."

  • "We have had the pleasure of dining at Cranes last year and this year on our Spring trek to Hilton Head. The food was again very nicely prepared...perfect temperature on our meat. Very nice offerings for starters...we especially enjoyed the Caprese Salad... Our waiter was knowledgeable and friendly .. attentive but not intrusive. The restaurant is small and cozy. The bar seemed to have a good attendance of locals. We were there an a Saturday night and all tables were taken and still the service and food was well executed. I recommend this as one of your best bets on the Island. Thank you Crane's Tavern for such a great dining experience."

  • "I was presently surprised with the quality and service at Cranes. My family an I enjoyed the the wide variety on the menu -- although the steaks were the stars of the night. Many locals were in the restaurant which is a testament to it's quality in this resort town ."

  • "Our Table was ready when we arrived. The waiter was very friendly. the food was good, except for the mashed potatoes. Our steaks were cooked right and the prime rib was a delight. The 2 appetizers we had were very nice ( tavern roll and a shrimp and cheese dip), the cheese cake was a good final touch. The bill for 4 people with a bottle of wine was $225.00."

  • "Good food but not for the budget conscious , come here atleast a few times a year , one of the few places that does a great calves liver dish, when they have the mushroom soup special don't miss it it is fabulous , my personal favorite pepper encrusted filet mignon. . Nice port selection to top off your dinner"

  • "A party of eight were seated at their desired time. No one came to take drink order for 15 minutes although surrounding tables being waited on. Waitress completely ignored the table upon arrival. Poor service in every area. Food just ok nothing special. 2 hours and 45 minutes. Would never go back or recommend unless you want to spend your entire evening in the restaurant! Two much better upscale restaurants on the same street that know how to serve a proper dinner and wine in a timely manner!"

  • "Best steak by far on Hilton Head Island. Consistent quality."

  • "This restaurant has a good atmosphere and the decor is reminiscent of some of the famous grill rooms up North, but it has waitresses in place of the grumpy old men and the prices are slightly lower. They do manage a reasonable steak but be warned, if you want a baked potato, you need to order it in advance when you make the booking. The prime rib is usually good and the other cuts are always tender. We booked ahead but were seated in the bar, which wasn't too bad except for the ubiquitous television sets. We would have preferred to sit in the restaurant, but that wasn't an option on Saturday night. This is one of the more expensive restaurants on the island and expect to pay upwards of $50 per person."

  • "Our waitress wasted no time letting us know they were famous for their beef. So we ordered and received two of the most over cooked , under seasoned and very tough rib eyes we have ever been served. The service and the vegetables were very good. We will not go back."

  • "Our group of 8 randomly will pick a different restaurant each week in the Hilton Head area to go to. We had the early dining menu, 3 didn't care for the choices so ordered appetizer off main menu. Portions were good size, waitress was very informative and friendly."
