A word from Crane's Tavern Steakhouse & Seafood
Hilton Head Island's destination for beef & seafood lovers, Crane's Tavern & Steakhouse serves only the finest USDA Prime Grade Beef & fresh local seafood. An old English bar & heart of pine floors create the setting with warm, inviting service & an award-winning wine list.
The restaurant represents 4 generations & over 100 years of restaurateurs in the Crane family dating back to 1908, when an Irish immigrant, Frank Crane founded Crane's Tavern in Philadelphia. After prohibition Frank's son, Francis & his brothers opened the famed establishment at 333 Queen Lane, where his son, Hank worked until 1969. That year Hank ventured out on his own & opened a Crane's Tavern in Ambler, PA. & then purchased the Surf City Hotel on Long Beach Island, NJ creating yet another establishment with the Crane namesake. In 1999 he & his daughter, Beth Anne opened Crane's Tavern & Steakhouse on Hilton Head Island, SC where it has become a local favorite

Love the potato dish served with entree, but creamed spinach was just too jelled. Need a new product for your spinach. Diane our food server was very pleasant and courteous.

Cranes tavern is a favorite of ours and this visit reinforced our commitment, the scalloped potatoes are the best I ever had, thinly sliced, stacked and creamy, baked to deep golden perfection. New items we tried were the navy bean and bacon soup, beef tips and the rib eye steak, the soup was hearty on a chilly night but the beef courses were beautifully seasoned and tender. Lindsey provided great friendly service adding to our experience. When visiting Hilton Head a few times year, Cranes will continue to be at the top of our list.

We had been eating mostly seafood on our trip to Hilton Head but we decided we wanted a steak night. We were not disappointed. The steaks and the scalloped potatoes were very good and the asparagus was cooked perfectly. (One note: they do not offer baked potatoes - only mashed, scalloped or steak fries.) Would have rated the restaurant higher but it was a very busy Friday night with a number of groups which made it very noisy and kept our server very busy. Perhaps an earlier seating or another night would have been less hectic. I would still recommend Crane's if you are in the mood for a good steak.

It was my first time at this restaurant because I live in GA but I was on vacation and I wanted to go somewhere with simple elegance. The food was good; I ordered the crab cake as an appetizer and for dinner I had the stuffed pork chop and my companion had the salmon and both were really good. The salmon had too much sauce on it and it was a bit thick but overall very tasty. The entire staff were very friendly and I will definitely go back whenever in town again.

As my overall 3 star rating is 'okay', so was our dining experience. Everything was rather average. The problem is that on Hilton Head there are a lot of choices. You might stop in to have a drink to check it out first. The bar has a really nice ambiance.

On every visit to Hilton Head Island, we make a point to have dinner at Crane's Tavern. Outstanding menu item is the prime rib; we both tried fish this time which was fine but not to the quality of the prime rib. Ambience here is quiet and adult; service is usually top-notch; a bit below that this time but still very good.

Arrived an hour early. Hostess was very willing to seat us but we decided to have a drink at the bar and chill out a bit. The bartender was excellent and offered to serve our meal at the bar. We declined but I'm sure he would have done a fine service. When we were seated the service was a little slow but then all the tables we occupied and the wait staff was very busy. Once we got started the meal was excellent. Peggy opted for the Surf & Turf and substituted Shrimp for scallops and then proceeded to make me jealous while she raved about the meal. I had a Shrimp dish with Cheese Grits (New for me) and it was delicious. In conclusion, when we relocate to the area Crane's will be a regular for us.

After an initial terrific visit to Crane's we were not disappointed in our return. Prime rib, mushroom ravioli were terrific and the sides were perfect (creamed spinach, scalloped potatoes, carrots along with great horseradish sauce and au jus). The side portions are generous and, unlike many restaurants, included with your entree making the meals reasonable. The Fried Apple Pie with vanilla ice cream is a must--this coming from two people who would normally pass on pie for dessert. Service was exemplary.

The wine selections are great. Salads and particularly the blue cheese dressing was excellent. Rib eye steaks were good but had too much salt applied. Restaurants should let customers apply their salt as needed at the table. This is a consistent problem and is a danger for people who have to watch their salt intake. The restaurant was full and that caused a lot of noise

Three meals were excellent - the 4th not so much (server gave the wrong prime rib to one person which was overcooked and a bad piecr of meat). The server tried to rectify by providing a take-home piece of prime rib - but damage was done. The shame is that the aggrieved person is a local and this was her first visit to Cranes.

This was our first time at Crane's. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable and very attentive. I started with the fried green tomato appetizer and was a little disappointed at the blandness of the tomatoes. The steaks and the spicy fries were great and we shared a couple of desserts which were fantastic! The atmosphere is a bit stuffy and dark. Overall, a very good meal for the money but I'm not sure I'll rush right back only because it just wasn't that exciting.

Excellent food and service. We had a party of 12, celebrating an event. The waitstaff was very knowledgeable about the menu, the Chef was able to accommodate special considerations for allergies. Menu was diverse and had something for everyone whether they wanted great seafood or steak choices. Large portions, steak and seafood cooked perfectly to everyone's taste. Very good food, great, great dining experience. Highly recommend Crane for a special occasion dinner. We have now added Crane to our favorite restaurant spots when we visit Hilton Head!

The food was ok, but the service was "entertaining". Ok, service was slow, really slow, so dont go hungry or you might not survive until the entre' comes. Then when our food finally arrived, the waiter lost his grip and accidentally hurled a 10oz filet at my 83 year old father. It bounced several times on the table and then we howled in laughter as the waiter tried to delicately pick it up. The best comment was my father who said "please dont take it back, I'll starve to death waiting for it". All in all, it was an ok experience because I haven't laughed that hard in years. Oh and in addition to the runaway steak.....I ordered a crab cake....along with my steak which arrived after I had my complete dinner!!

Four of us enjoyed a terrific dinner at Crane's. We were all familiar with Crane's in the Philadelphia area but had yet to try the Hilton Head spot. We're delighted with our experience and can't wait to return. Food was prepared perfectly--Prime Rib was terrific as was Shrimp and Grits (a first for one of the group). Sides of Scalloped Potatoes, Creamed Spinach and Sauteed Zucchini were all great. Do not miss the Fried Apple Pie. This could become a neighborhood favorite for us.

I chose Crane's based on a "word of mouth" recommendation. The cost was a consideration b/c I'm not Warren Buffet. Be that as it may, the hostess seated us promptly; she was pleasant and made us feel at ease. All staff members were professional. The food was impeccable. We had prime rib, steak and tuna; all dishes were presented beautifully and more importantly, they were DELICIOUS! You will be glad you dined here.
