The Craftsman Restaurant serves up a unique dining experience. Come and enjoy Midwestern American cooking in a comforting and relaxing environment. The outdoor patio is the perfect place to enjoy the evening, chef Ben Jacoby's cooking, and perhaps a glass of wine or cocktail from the bar. Most of the food products come directly from the growers and producers, thereby eliminating the middleman. This doesn't mean that the food costs are less- usually they're more expensive, but it does ensure that suppliers are paid fairly for their crops and helps support and sustain the independent rural, agrarian economy. Most, if not all of the vegetable products, are certified organic. It's this commitment to quality that shows through the food at Craftsman.Continued

  • "I've been here before and have chosen it in the past because the food is carefully prepared and showcases local produce. Big supporter of those things. It may have just been the particular dish that I ordered but the main part (lamb burger) was unremarkable and bland. The sauces on the side could only cover that up a little bit. The staff was very good, as usual, and let my friend and I stay for a long time after the kitchen had closed; they didn't disturb us at all and we left when we were ready. Appreciate it! Work on the burger and things will be ok."

  • "it was our first time at this restaurant. We liked the open floor plan and how light it was inside. The service took awhile but once we got our drinks we did not mind because they were delicious! There cocktails were out of this world, and would recommend! There were 4 of us and we all tried a different dish. I felt the dishes were tasty, but maybe a little too much. They had a lot of flavor. The only thing I didn't like was the pork chop, very large and fatty. Otherwise we had a nice time, but very expensive."

  • "Had high expectations based on reviews read before hand. Host was rude, acted distracted and dismissive. Restaurant was very loud, extremely difficult to hear. Server was not well trained: spoke to softly given the noise level of the restaurant, she acted very annoyed that we wanted to visit for a bit before ordering our main course (we had already order drinks and appetizers) - and every five minutes or so asked if we were ready to order yet, even though we explicitly said we wanted to visit a bit. She never once asked how our food was, and if we needed anything else. She cleared the entire table of dishes with the exception of one member of our party who was only half way done with his entree. Food was good, however will not go back."

  • "We went for the first time to The Craftsman for a post-Valentine Day dinner before a concert. We ordered Pheasant with Gnocchi and Walleye Wild Rice dishes that were seasonal off-menu items. Both were delicious and served by a very kind waitress that was attentive and professional without intruding more than necessary. Their Micro Greens salad was a very fresh and lively combination of flavors and textures we both especially enjoyed. The wine list isn't extensive but both the Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay we had were excellent representations of their varietal. The decor harkens to the Arts & Craft era of Stickley and Rookwood. A great fit for its east Minneapolis' bungalows neighborhoods by the river."

That was our most disappointing go yet. I got the hanger steak and it was definitely smaller than anticipated but delicious. We love the location of the restaurant. Our server was just OK....she seemed distracted. We had her the occasion before last and she forgot our Charcuterie order. We thought it was just the busy. This time, although she didn't forget any of our orders, she still seemed distracted--and the restaurant was definitely not busy. We'd go again but it is no longer one of our "No Miss" joints."

  • "This a very pleasant neighborhood gem in the Longfellow area of Minneapolis, MN. We went there to celebrate my wife's birthday. The food was great ... duck leg confit for my wife and a strip steak for me. The place is a bit noisy ... not so loud as to totally interfere with conversation, but the conversational noise level and background music are definitely distracting. It's not a quiet romantic environment, even though the quality of the food and interior decor would suggest that might be the case. I suggest taking a look at the flow of service to diners ... we were left with a menu sitting on the table while we ate our starter salad. Maybe they could take away and then bring back the menu when asking customers to select their entree."

  • "We take my parents out to dinner every year for their birthday. Our age range at the table was 13 - 75 years, and this was the perfect place. We all enjoy good food, a nice cozy atmosphere, good service and being taken care of, and we were not disappointed. The charcuterie plate was inventive, varied and included sweet pickled veggies. I would order this as a main course. Three of us ordered the rainbow trout and oh my, it was perfectly crispy-skinned cooked. They should never take it off the menu while they can get good fish. Our server didn't rush the dinner, recommended wine (we ordered a bottle) and was attentive without being annoying. Parking was a challenge in the snow-filled streets but it wouldn't stop future visits."

  • "I have always loved the Craftsman, but on new years eve the service was uncharacteristically poor! It was my friends birthday (which was noted in the reservation yet not acknowledged by staff) so wanted it to be a great experience. We didn't see the server for the first ten minutes, then it took forever to get drinks…I had to go find the server to remind her. My friend's first course got cold while I was waiting for mine to arrive. We were not in a huge hurry, but were surprised that there was a 45 minute gap from the time we finished our first course unit when we were served the main course. The server was pleasant but not attentive: not the caliber of service you would expect at a chain restaurant not at such a high quality restaurant."

  • "I have been looking forward to trying this restaurant for a while and, while the atmosphere was great for dining and the staff was nice, the food just did not measure up. My dining companion got the pork chop, which was totally dry and flavorless. I got the rainbow trout, which was slightly better, but still not very flavorful at all, and the sides with both dishes were the same. I am not at all a snob about food, so I can only imagine that someone with a more discerning palate than mine would have much harsher words for this restaurant. Either way I would definitely not recommend this restaurant to a friend."

  • "We met friends to toast the Holidays and their new relationship. We love The Craftsman and picked to meet there! The restaurant wasn't even half full and the atmosphere was perfect! Our waitress on the other hand was far from. Once she realized we were only having drinks and not eating she was curt and rude. We were embarrassed by her extreme attitude that was obvious when we said we didn't need menu's. We asked her about a desert that was our favorite and she simply declared it wasn't on the menu but didn't offer up other suggestions. Our friends had purchased us a $50 Gift Certificate to surprise us before we arrived and they actually apologized that we would have to come back there to use it. Extremely disappointed."

The food is always well prepared and the service attentive without being intrusive. We also enjoy the custom cocktails. It can get loud when crowded on a Fri/Sat night, but I probably only notice that because I am (somewhat) old."

  • "My wife and I went to Craftsman after a long absence. It may be even better then we remember. I had their delicious Craftsman Manhattan, then we switched to Argyle Brut Sparkling wine which was delightful. My wife ordered the soup of the day to start, which was a Cream of Cauliflower., and I had the Charcuterie, which as usual, had several very tasty items, including outstanding duck liver pate, venison chorizo, rabbit terrine, and cured duck breast. Then, my wife had the gnocchi and I had the roasted Steelhead with sauteed sunchokes in a chervil beurre blanc. Both were terrific, and the Argyle sparkling went well with both. We finished up with their beignets and a side of Salted Caramel ice cream (from Izzy's). What a birthday!"
