Diner Reviews
  • "We had a great pretheater dinner here on 7/24. Both loved the seafood dumpling appetizer, the lobster sauce was wonderful. The meal was consistently excellent through all 3 courses, which seems to be rare these days. Service was very attentive, but the place was pretty quiet on a Thursday evening. I suspect it could be noisy/hectic on the weekend."

  • "One of Cleveland's best chefs and one of Cleveland's best restaurants"

  • "My husband and I went here for the first time for dinner to celebrate his birthday on Saturday. We had the pork stack for an app, I had the Cod and he had the bison tenderloin. All were exceptional! We finished dinner with the blonde from the dessert menu and that was delicious. as always His resturants are too notch."

  • "We had a wonderful time at C&H! The food was so delicious!! We did get our salad before our wine got to the table. Not sure why it took so long to get the wine, but we eventually got it. Good place to go after a Playhouse Square event."

  • "I have been to Cowell and Hubbard several times now for several occasions. Whether it was with a large group before a show at Playhouse Square or for casual dinner with just my Wife, the food and service was great. Price is good for the quality. Their one fault is the bread that's served ahead of the meal. It's a nice hearty crusty bread, but by the time they serve it has become soft and chewy. I still eat a bunch of it though!"

  • "Decent menu, not a huge variety, but enough. Expected a few more specials, but really only one for each category. Acceptable portions, creative menu, food very well prepared and arrive on time and piping hot. They have gluten free bread available and were very flexible in adapting the menu and changing side items to make the meal gluten free. The only complaint was the slow arrival of our drinks, waiting 10-15 minutes for each drink was a bit too much. Not entirely sure if it was our server or the bar's responsibility, as drinks arrived from both. My husband commented that with the mark up on alcohol, they are missing an opportunity. His second beer arrived just before dessert. Valet, walk to theater a few buildings away."

  • "I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner selection, North Atlantic Cod. After reading many reviews on the restaurant, this particular choice kept getting recommended. I figured it had to be good and it was. Beautiful presentation, tasty grains/asparagus and cod/with sauce. Adequate portion. I accompanied it with a salad that was "okay". My husband had difficulty selecting a dinner choice because he likes more traditional dinner choices and the chef is very creative and selects unusual ingredients."

  • "We live in AZ, but used to live in Cleveland and know Zack Bruell's reputation for excellence. His newest restaurant did not disappoint us. From the greeting - prompt and friendly, to the wait staff - she was was friendly, courteous, helpful (suggested a fine wine for my wife), to the food everything was first class. We shared a mushroom-stuffed raviolis with Parmesan in chicken broth appetizer which was wonderful. My wife's scallops were done just right - not too tough, not undercooked. My hanger steak was prepared as ordered, and my pommes frites were perfect. We shared a moulton chocolate dessert with vanilla ice cream and wish we had room for a second. We're looking forward to a return visit."

  • "We were the only guests. Menu was not inspired, food was warmed over in microwave. Not at all like our past experiences with this (usually) excellent restaurant. Will give it another chance, but not on a Sunday."

  • "We had dined at this restaurant in 2013 and had a much better experience so I'm sorry to say that we were very disappointed in our lackluster experience. Apparently if you want to not have a 3 hour meal, you need to let your server know. We were not headed to a broadway show afterwards but did have plans and were hoping to be in and out within an hour and a half or so. We were interested in a cheese selection but ended up cancelling after waiting for too long. The appetizers were great - but that's about it. The entrees were very bland. Our server was really friendly but it seemed like she was swamped (even though she had someone shadowing her). I had previously thought all of Zack's restaurants were excellent (except for Table 45)."

  • "We had a lovely meal in a peaceful, sophisticated environment. The servers were attentive but not obtrusive and the staff is all aware that you might need to be heading out to the theater so they help you plan accordingly. The food was excellent, portions appropriate and specials were interesting. Well done."

  • "I was so looking forward to dinner at Cowell and Hubbard. The food was disappointing. I had the pasta of the day, recommended by our server. It was mushy. I had the seafood dumplings, which I thought (mistakenly?) was a special of the house. They were just bad- taste and texture. Our server, though there were only 5 tables occupied (it is a large space) on Friday night at 7, was not particularly attentive. The energy in the room was non existent!"

  • "I had the opportunity to try Cowell & Hubbard a few days ago, and it was an inadequately surreal experience. The restaurant lacked any sense of a cohesive theme, in menu or décor, and the food was simple, dull, and uninspired. You would expect better quality and execution from the person who owns L'Albatross, but unfortunately Zack Bruell seems to have more restaurants than time. The one upside was the staff, who were always professional and polite, if not a bit aloof. There are so many better reasons to dine downtown – don’t make this one of them. I wouldn’t dine again."

  • "Very good food, reasonable prices, great service. We went there prior to attending the Allen Theatre. The server was very conscious of getting us to the show on time, without rushing. We will return for sure for a more leisurely dining experience."

  • "Our 3d visit, first in 2014. We're very surprised to see a limited menu, and some strange choices. Ended up with a salad and first course for dinner. Used to love the choices and variety of the old menu (from frog legs to sweetbreads etc). Would continue to come once a year when going to theater, but choices too limited for more than that. This is a great lakes city-where is the perch, walleye etc ? Service was fine, as we're wine and drinks. Love Zack's restaurants, but this would move from one or two to five."

  • "Cowell & Hubbard is our go-to place before the show! With a menu that offers something for everyone at the table. Whether you want meat, seafood, vegetarian or gluten-free - this kitchen has it all!"

  • "We enjoyed an early meal prior to a performance at the Ohio Theater. We were lucky to be seated by the windows which looks out on a vibrant street scene. Except for boar being off the menu that evening (and one of us did consider ordering boar) everything we ordered was available and well prepared. We especially enjoyed the cheese tray and the knowledgeable server. My spouse was able to taste a new beer prior to ordering (he decided against the beer and went for wine instead)."

  • "This was our first and probably last visit to this restaurant. Made reservations far in advance and asked for a nice table because we were also bringing friends from out of town. They seated us at a booth at the end of the bar, not even on the dining room and it was loud and congested. The good was just okay, not worth the money. The service staff was very good, however. The most memorable part of our night was the valet guy, he was exceptionally nice!"

  • "Popular with the theater crowd. Servers did an excellent job of keeping a nice pace to get everyone to the show on time. The scallop entreé was exquisite. Fantastic wines by the glass selections. I would visit here again if I come back to Cleveland."

  • "Had the North Atlantic Cod for lunch and it was wonderful. The tastes and textures of the cod, farro, and grilled asparagus complemented each other extremely well. The presentation was very artistic. It was a very impressive place with a great atmosphere."

  • "my first visit was June 11 and found it so good I returned June 17. The food and service is outstanding. The Host and server showed interest in us -- something that is often overlooked in restaurants. The olive oil served with fresh rustic bread is available for purchase and believe me, is as fresh and aromatic as the first crush in Italy. Definitely a new favorite."

  • "We found this restaurant through opentable.com and decided to give it a try. The service was great and the food was absolutely amazing!!! We would recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys French food. This restaurant is right next to Playhouse Square, so it's a great place to go before your show."

  • "The "tag team" service was outstanding. Our servers were efficient, friendly and fun. Our meals were excellent (hangar steak cooked perfectly and braised beef shoulder tender and delicious). We went before a show and they made sure we had a great experience and got us out on time."

  • "My husband & I had a wonderful time dining here before catching our 7:30 show at the Allen Theatre. We knew it would be a little expensive, but felt the quality & quantity of food was well worth the price. The service was excellent. All of the wait staff was very attentive & polite."

  • "Great place to celebrate after our high school senior's commencement ceremony just down the street at the State Theater. Great ambiance! Superior food and service. Very nice, quiet enough to talk booth for 6. will definitely go back for a regular dinner anytime."

  • "Had a very enjoyable meal at Cowell & Hubbard - I had the pasta special and my father had the hanger steak. If there was one complaint it was that the wine pour was a little scimpy - for a glass that cost $15.00 would have expected more."

  • "The food was absolutely delicious! The service was top-notch!"

  • "Dined at Cowell & Hubbard for the second time as I had a good experience first time around. This visit was a big disappointment as both entrees we chose were heavily salted. The high rating is certainly not deserved and the relatively high prices for the very poor dining experience will lead us not to return to this restaurant."

  • "Excellent food, superb service. We were initially seated under the A/C blower but our server graciously moved us to a more comfortable table. Escargot was the best I've ever had!"
    Dined on 6/6/2014
  • "We had been before and had a great experience and great food. Our food was OK but not special. Salad was over salty and cod was very bland. Service was fine until we wanted to leave and couldn't locate our server for 20" to get the check even though the restaurant was nearly empty. Maybe our expectations were high from the first time we went there."

  • "Third time here and it didn't disappoint. The waitress was amazing and gave great feedback/recommendation. We landed on the pork appetizer, tomato salad and pasta du jour. Delightful. We will be back. "
