Cowell & HubbardWell orchestratedService was prompt, well coordinated among several individuals, and attentive. Food was quite good and prompt. Lunches don't get much better.5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMA tasty lunch treatThe service for lunch today was cavalier, but the food was stellar as always. We basically had the restaurant to ourselves (arriving a little after 1p). My salmon main on a bed of spinach was cooked perfectly (medium well at my request against the server's recommendation of medium rare) and was just as good as the last time I had it.5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMMother's DayOverall, my experience was very positive. However, the service, although very attentive, was a bit slow and when my food did finally arrive, it wasn't exactly pipping hot. I know it would have been superb had it been as hot as it should have been when I took my first bite.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, drinks and atmosphere.Great food, drinks and atmosphere. New York in Cleveland.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Place!I would recommend this restaurant to anyone! Great food, great service and great location for the theaters. Many good choices on the menu. Loved the raviolis and pork shank. Whitefish great too! Overall great dining experience!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent! We chose Cowell & Hubbard for our 14th wedding anniversary dinner, and we were not disappointed. The entire staff knew it was our anniversary; the hostess sat us at her favorite table with a great view of the Theatre District; our server provided us with a complementary dessert. The food was excellent, although I think my husband would have been okay without the elaborate descriptions of the ingredients. However, the server was correct about the tastes. Red fish was incredibly seasoned without being over-the-top. My husband loved his flounder as well. The sunchoke salad was phenomenal. The wine list is quite pricey, so we went with glasses of wine. This was a lovely experience, and we'd gladly return.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMWe all had wonderful meals. We all had wonderful meals. The bread is not stop unless you return your plate to them. The desserts were awesome. Great time was had by all. Fantastic waiter Ted gave wonderful details on the food selections. Answered all our questions. My new favorite!5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food and service we'reThe food and service we're excellent and great wine/cocktail list. The décor was a little sterile, but overall a great experience, We'll be back!5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food; terrific serviceWe've been to Cowell & Hubbard twice and both times the food was excellent with service to match. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and made terrific suggestions. The food couldn't have been more delicious.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMMy new favoriteI had made a comment about wanting to be up front near the window and they completely accomodated me even though it was 'show night' at Playhouse. (We were not seeing a show just like the restaurant). The wiater made a great suggestion on a bottle of wine. The rest of his service was impecaable too. The food was OUTSTANDING, and the meringue dessert is my favorite. The hostess came over and asked if the table she selected was what I was looking for which it absolutely was and said she would note in im my reservation. All in all, a perfect meal on a busy night in the Playhouse district.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMWe really found the restaurantWe really found the restaurant enjoyable, great service, would definitely return again.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious and DelightfulExcellent food and amazing service. We are a big Zack Bruell fan; he rarely disappoints.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMThere were a couple standoutsThere were a couple standouts during the dinner - the frisee' salad with chicken livers was quite good, and the beet salad, which two others had, was also very good. One friend said the frog legs were outstanding. Two of us had the veal which was ok. It was a bit dry. The other member of the party had a beef shoulder(?) dish that he said was very good. We requested a booth in the window, and it was wonderful to see so much activity downtown.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Evening! Entrée andGreat Evening! Entrée and app selections have slight twists along with mouth watering surprises. Excellent quality! All 5 members of our party were pleasantly surprised. And the staff is incredibly attentive to service as well as ensuring that you can enjoy a leisurely paced dinner and still make it to a show at Playhouse Square on time.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways WonderfulCowell & Hubbard never disappoints. EVERYTHING is perfectly prepared. We started with delicious, delicate, flavorful shrimp cakes. Salads and sides are interesting and fabulous. The side of kale was outstanding! It surpassed the excellently prepared kale dish at Jonathan Waxman's Barbuto in NYC. Scallops were succulent and the accompanying carrot mash complements beautifully. The beef dishes taste like comfort food that's been elevated at the hand of the chef to the level of perfection. The team service experience works so well, and the servers make you feel that they are genuinely engaged in creating the perfect dining experience. The hostesses are warm and welcoming, which we've found to be a Zach Bruell trademark!4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMEnergetic restaurant withEnergetic restaurant with excellent menu. Enjoyed knowing that we had purchased my engagement and wedding ring 45 years ago at Cowell & Hubbard and went back to have it redesigned. Special memories.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMSimply the best!We had a wonderful dining experience, and Cowell & Hubbard offers a broad selection of eclectic entrees. Following bowl of the mushroom soup, we tried the thyme dumplings and the pork loin (which was the special), and both were delicious! The desserts and the pre-dinner cocktails were also fabulous and interesting. We loved the Blondie as well as the peanut butter and jelly cheesecake. The service was impeccable! We were able to dine at a comfortable pace and make it to the theater in plenty of time.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had a very nice meal, andWe had a very nice meal, and they were sensitive to our timing, since we were going to the theatre afterwards.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMThird time at this Zach BurelThird time at this Zach Burel Restaurant. Was my birthday and choice of any restuarant in Cleveland's Downtown. The service and food was outstanding. I think the Hearts of Palm Salad just jumped to the top of my all-time favorite salads. The flavors and textures blended into a mouthwatering perfection. Can't wait for another Tour de Burel.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMDinner and theater never better!Fantastic to have another Zach Bruell restaurant and so close the Playhouse theaters!4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMIt was our first time thereIt was our first time there and a very memorable dinner. WE WILL DEFINATELY RETURN.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMBrad the waiterOur waiter, Brad, was excellent. He was very knowledgeable on food and beverages. A very professional waiter. He was also very willing to give us separate checks which, I know, is more work.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMVery attentive servers andVery attentive servers and terrific menu. I have now been to 4 of Zack's restaurants and will keep going.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMIs a good spot to eat thatIs a good spot to eat that is convenient for theater goers....the level of food quality and presentation has gone down though since they opened.I ordered the whole chicken with cassis sauce and the chicken was pale and skin not attractive and the sauce was barely there.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMFirst visit before seeingFirst visit before seeing theatrical performance nearby. Totally responsive and friendly. We had mussels for a starter (great) and my wife and I both had fish entrees (her's was rock fish mine red fish). Very accommodating around our theater timing and our request for a booth.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMCowell and Hubbard continuesCowell and Hubbard continues to be the best choice for a pre-theater dinner at Playhouse Square. Matt's service was superb, and the food is excellent. Red fish with a sunchoke salad are our favorites, although there are several creative, attractive and tasty options.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of the BESTWhat an amazing restaurant! Angela, our server, was extremely familiar with the entrees, sides and wine and gave us outstanding service. The menu selections were varied and exciting, and the food was delicious and beautiful. I can't wait to go back and try other dishes. It was a great dining experience and so convenient to Playhouse Square. We had reservations at 5 pm, took our time dining and with coffee, and got into our seats at the Palace Theater at 7:10...in perfect time for the 7:30 show.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMWent this time before theWent this time before the play at 545pm and made it out in plenty of time to get to the theatre at 730pm. Have also been after the show at 1030 and had a great time. They are also very conscientious about getting you out in plenty of time to see your show.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat PlaceOur second time there. Great for pre theater dinner. We will return.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMI was really impressed thatI was really impressed that the hostess and waitress both knew that we were there to watch a show and what time it was at.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMA great spot in Playhouse SquareA great pre- or post- theater option! The menu is terrific with many interesting choices. Service was impeccable. Zachary Bruell was "on the line", inspecting every dish that came out of the kitchen and adding finishing touches. The restaurant has ironed out many of the early issues and has blossomed into a first-class dining experience.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMthere 4 25th annv. great foodthere 4 25th annv. great food great ser. got us to plar on time would go there again4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMThe second time we have beenThe second time we have been there. I can't say enough about the service.
It was a theatre night, very busy. One order rhe chicken special was under
cooked. they offered to bring another but we had to get to show. They took
it off the bill and ALSO took our wine off.4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMIt finally all came together!First, a note about Zack Bruell's restaurants in general, C&H in specific - they are inconsistent. One time food is divine but the server disappears. Another time service excels but the pasta is undercooked. We return because the menus are innovative enough to intrigue, & even with breakdowns they do a good job of service recovery.
My wife & I dined on Fri nite during pre-theatre rush; we are pleased to say that everything came together perfectly. The beer & wine selections & service were spot-on, the server (and her team) were exceptional, the food was beautifully presented, perfectly cooked (we both went with fish dishes, one of which was the evening's special), and the pacing was lovely.4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMCannot miss! Outstanding for all!Outstanding service from start to finish. I called ahead b/c we had some special dietary needs for some in our party between food allergies and celiac disease. The fine staff at C&H didn't skip a beat to make everyone at home. People in our party who constantly have to turn down bread before the meal and almost all desserts after the meal because of celiac were pleasantly surprised with excellent gluten free breads and a delicious flour-less chocolate cake dessert. Our server was helpful in every way imaginable. The decor was modern, very clean and comfortable, and the place was full of patrons who all seemed as delighted to be there as we were. Highly recommended and looking forward to our next visit.4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMSpecial Place, Good Vibe, Great FooZach Bruell led the restaurant revolution in Cleveland and continues to innovate. The place was packed when we arrived at 7 with theatre goers, but we got a comfortable table in the corner. By 7:30 we had the front room almost to ourselves. Recommend you get reservations around then. Amazing apps - escargot served in a small crock - wanted a straw for the sauce. Sweatbreads as good as he used to serve at Z. Zach even came out and chatted for a bit about his long career in Cleveland. The lamb breast was an interesting cut - sorta like lamb pork belly - really tender with Moroccan spicings. We brought a bottle of '86 Bordeaux and they opened and decanted it without charge. (Also had wine from their excellent list.) We'll be back.4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMPleasant SurpriseThe menu was great with some exceptional choices to pick from. Really enjoyed the pork shoulder and vegetables. A good up and coming place will return again.4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMWorth the waitAs always we had a great experience at Cowell & Hubbard before attending the play at playhouse square. There was an issue with our food coming out timely, and the Maître D` of the restaurant was very informative and let us know about it and that it would be out soon. The food was worth the wait! We had desert and made it to the show with time to spare!4/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
