Diner Reviews
  • "We went her on a Friday night for dinner. Our table was ready when we arrived, the service was absolutely perfect. Attentive, but not overbearing. The atmosphere is quiet, but not silent. The lighting is perfect, and tables are situated so that you are not on top of your neighbor. Good ambiance. Most importantly, the food was excellent! Although a small menu, there is something on there for everyone. Our steaks were cooked perfectly, and the sides were delicious! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looks for a great evening. • "we truly enjoyed our dinner at Cowboy Star. I had read good reviews but was a little weary of the name...but it ws a great surprise.."

  • "Skirt steak was very good, Ribeye was tough! We tried to get the chef to serve the Halibut special plain and he refused?! Could not understand the big deal to serve the special plain?!? Service was very good, server a bit short especially about the special!?"

  • "Been here twice now, both times food was fabulous. Love the oscar style option for my steak, the guys raved about the dry aged beef. Need to come with the intent to relax and enjoy. Service can take some time depending on what you order. Everything is served in courses. The second time we came we asked for soup and salad to be served with the appetizers and that worked out well. The muse push not sure that is how you spell it, is always a nice surprise. Tasty and visually appealing presentation. The fresh baked rolls are amazing! And can't forget the desserts. Creme Brûlée is delish and the bread pudding marvelous! It is pricey $470+tip for 4 adults includes cocktails. But for special occasions it is worth every penny! We'll be back!"

  • "Great for business lunch or nice dinner. Drinks are really good and steaks are excellent too. Fish is usually overcooked, though."

  • "One of our favorite places to go. Always amazing food. best steak you'll ever eat, literally. My husband and I say this every time we go there. And make sure you order the bread pudding for dinner. OH MY!!! The staff is very knowledgeable of wines. Our waiter, the last 4 times we have gone, has always recommended the best and has also made us aware of new wineries to try. You will not be let down if you go here!"

  • "Cowboy Star fits the name - meat-centred menu, cowboy ambience, and great service. Price point is high, but I expect it's predictably good for that. The resto feels smaller because of the setup, and I appreciate that - feels more European in layout and intimate in experience."

  • "My husband and I had one of the best meals of our lives when we dined here. The food was amazing and the service was exceptional. We both had steak and each one was cooked to perfection. I would definitely dine here again when in San Diego and I recommend you do too!"

  • "Have been going to Cowboy Star for years. When we got married, the next day we all had dinner there. The service is fabulous, always a wonderful meal and love the bar. Will stay a FAN for sure."

  • "Great steaks and atmosphere. My friend and I went to try the steaks compared to the usual high end chains/ We found the steaks to be extremely flavorful and well marbled. If you love rib eyes this is the place for you. I thought the selections of cuts was a bit limited as I am more of a thick cut New York fan. We waited a long time for our steaks and were misled about the timing by the waiter, but food was great when it arrived. This place is definitely worth a try for steak lovers."

  • "Cowboy star is an outstanding establishment serving delicious cuts or organic meat. We went with a group or 7 guys. Unfortunately, 1 individual had to send back his steak as it was predominantly fat. Granted, with a Ribeye you are going to get SOME fat, but this was edible for him. I probably had the 2nd fattiest, but for me, even the fat is delicious. Other than that, everything was delicious, GREAT waiter."

  • "We have long been fans of Donovan's for a really great steak. A friend had recommended Cowboy Star, but we couldn't see how it could be that good. Last Friday was an exhausting day. The need for steak was strong, so we decided to try it before the symphony. We relaxed and enjoyed ourselves enough to let the symphony ride for another night and just enjoy the meal. Donovan's you're great, but you've more than met your match."

  • "Took my husband here for his birthday and I was completely amazed at how great the food, cocktails, dessert, dessert drinks and service was. Not a single complaint. Blow away by it all. They even put a Happy Birthday custom message on our menus. Such an awesome touch."

  • "Romantic atmosphere, great food and outstanding service! I have no complaints at all! My wife and I enjoyed ourselves tremendously while dining out at Cowboy Star for our anniversary. Our waiter was very knowledgeable of the menu and he was extra helpful in accommodating for my wife's food allergies."

  • "Had heard great things about Cowboy Star , so when I needed to take clients out to dinner with my boss, I thought this would be a good choice. I was so disappointed and embarassed! Two of us ordered fish, one ordered a fliet and we ordered soup, a shrimp appetizer and bacon mac & cheese for the table. Our drinks, appetizer and soup came out promptly and were good. We then waited 45 minutes for our entrees! It was a Wednesday night, so I'm not sure why the long wait. Our waiter had also dissappeared so we could even ask what was going on. When the entrees finally arrived, the fish dishes were over cooked and dry, as was the filet. The bacon mac & cheese was nothing more than buttered pasta with bread crumbs. Will not be returning."

  • "This is our favorite spot to take out of town guests! The décor is really fun and the service is always outstanding. The food is some of the best anywhere near the Gaslamp. Yes, it's a little on the expensive side but worth every penny as it's the best steak I've eaten in San Diego."

  • "We started with a very good Caesar salad and both of us ordered the 35 day aged bone-in rib-eye. I can honestly say it was the worst quality of meat I have eaten, at a restaurant or at home. I could hardly find a piece to chew that didn't have gristle and fat. I understand there should be marbling in a good quality rib-eye, but this went far beyond that. My husband did not want me to send it back so he switched with me. His was slightly better but still not to the standard of a high-end steak restaurant. For $52 for a steak, a complete waste of money. I won't be back, which is too bad because I really liked the ambiance and location."

  • "We were in San Diego for a week and we went to Cowbar star on Tuesday and it was so good we went back on Friday. Steaks had a very good flavor, I lived in Charleston SC for 8 Years and the restaraunts there are amazing. My favorite steak house EVER is Halls Chop House on King St. The steaks here were very close to the Quality of steaks at Halls"

  • "This was the best filet / steak I have ever had the filet was freshly cut. Jeremy, my server, was amazing. I never had to ask for anything and he always answered my question before I even asked. From the host, to the bartender, to other servers, to my own server, the service was phenomenal. One of my top 5 dining experiences. On a scale of one to five, I give it a 9."

  • "This was my sixth visit to Cowboy Star.. I have always had a terrific dining experience there.. They have a terrific wine list, make an unbelievable martini with bleu-cheese stuffed olives and always have unique and interesting side dishes.. But the real treat is their mastery of the aged and seasoned steak! Their steaks are perfectly cut, cooked to perfection and unlike other "well known steakhouse chains", Cowboy Star presents very large portions.. My favorite is their 18oz Cowboy Rib Eye.. you will not be disappointed.. don't forget their incredible chocolate bread pudding for dessert!"

  • "I love this place and everything about it. I took my best friend to dinner for her birthday, noted beforehand that I was going for her birthday in my reservations, and they gave us a menu with "Happy Birthday Christy" typed at the top! Whaaaa? It was amazing! So sweet and such a nice touch. I got the NY Strip and Christy got the Filet, both were perfect, tender, delicious. The steamed mussels were AMAZING. We also had the bread pudding for dessert, and it was so melt in your mouth delicious that I decided I had to try and figure out how to make bread pudding. Service was EXCELLENT. Five stars all around."

  • "We went to this restaurant to celebrate my husband's birthday. I had notified the staff in advance about the occasion, and they handed us personalized menus with a birthday message at the top-- very nice touch. Our waiter was very attentive and provided excellent suggestions on the menu. We both ordered some steaks, which were cooked perfectly. Overall, the entire experience was very delightful. We will gladly return for special occasions down the road."

  • "My husband and I really enjoyed our visit to the Cowboy Star. The wait staff was exceptional and made us feel very welcome. We went there for the steaks and the ambiance and both exceeded our expectations. Also, the mashed potatoes were the best I ever tasted."

  • "Outstanding service! Immediate attention, constant replacing of utensils, cleaning of crumbs, arranging your dishes, etc. Good food, A couple excellent dishes, some so-so. Would have loved to try more. But a bit over-priced The food didn't quite seem worth the price, though with the service, it came closer. Given the price, I'd recommen Cowboy Star only for special occassions."

  • "We are big fans of the CS. We buy our steaks from their butcher shop every Saturday. On this evening we were very disappointed with one of our meals. My wife's fillet was superb as usual. On the other hand the grass fed ribeye was about one of my most disappointing meals ever. The steak was about 3/8", very well done (we ordered medium), and extremely tough and chewy. We shared the issue with the waiter, but nothing was done about it. We tried to be polite and not make a scene. It was Valentine's night and we wanted to be mindful of the very busy evening and other diners."

  • "amazing food! I had some kinda mushroom appetizer with uni and roe and duck egg! Very unique dish!...Cesar salad had real anchovies, great touch! had filet for dinner cooked pretty well with asparagus and mash...best bread pudding dessert, and I don't even care for bread pudding but our waiter recommended and he did disappoint! oh yeah, cocktail was broken arrow hint of spice...strong drink half way thru I was feeling a buzz...but I am a lightweight drinker but it was very yummy, cannot stop sipping!"

  • "This restaurant is officially my favorite. Pleasant, attentive staff. I really like to sit at the bar and watch the meal preparation. (kitchen bar, they also have a bar-bar) The Meat is always to flavorful, high end creative menu, butcher shop on premises. My idea of fine dining. Oh, And I have never felt rushed unlike some places."

  • "But, the wine list needs some work. While I understand the devotion to California wines exhibited in the wine list, I would have appreciated a nice Bordeaux or Argentine/Chilean malbec with my steak. The food was outstanding...the wine list should be as well."

  • "Very disappointed. My expectations were high. Was here about a year ago for drinks and it seemed like a great spot for dinner and a serious steak. Dry-aged ribeye was tough and gristly. Ordered oysters for the table. Very fishy tasting, with a weird coconut foam instead of traditional condiments. Drinks were good, but we came for the food. Normally, I would say something about the steaks, but I brought a party of six and it would have been a little awkward. 2 of us had the dry-aged ribeye and they were both tough. the kobe steak and the fillets were fine. The waiter asked if everything was okay after every course except for the steaks, so, I'm guessing he knew they were not great. Wanted to like this place, but would not risk it again."
