Diner Reviews
  • "We visited Cowboy Ciao from Michigan and just loved the food (Stetson salad is a must!) and the service was excellent. Can't wait to go back the next time we are in AZ!"

  • "Cowboy Ciao is by far our daughter's favorite restaurant when she comes to visit from NYC. Ever since she was young when I took her there for lunch, she orders the Stetson Chop Salad and she is never disappointed in the presentation or taste. We started our mean with the not to be missed Mini Mushroom Pan Fry (the taste is out of this world) and the Bruschette Duet. Expect excellent service at Cowboy Ciao. Our waiter was very tall and very friendly. The Friday night scene at Cowboy Ciao is electric. Views onto Stetson and the Scottsdale Waterfront are glowing with bustling pedestrians. The restaurant can become very noisy. Our table was situated where it was easier to hear each other. Cowboy Ciao, a great restaurant that won't disappoint."

  • "Always top notch with their dishes (especially the pork chop and short ribs), the main draw is the most extensive wine list in Phoenix."

  • "Over all experience was good but when I received my bill I was a little disturbed. I took two clients there for dinner and drinks. when I reviewed my bill I noticed they charged me separate for Olives, ginger beer & soda that was part of the actual cocktail that we ordered. Instead of paying $12- $15 for cocktails we were actually paying $14-$18. Also I requested the bartender not to fill my drink with a lot of ice because the glass they served the drink was very small. I know its not a big deal to some but it was the principal of it. Recommend to eat there but don't drink!!"

  • "We dined at this place for the first time on a recommendation. It was truly great food! Our server was right on with all his recommendations and was very prompt. We went for our anniversary and we requested a good table, which we were seated at. We will definately eat there again!"

  • "lunch was great! Love, Love, LOVED the chopped salad!"

  • "Great food. Hard to believe we had never been there before. We had the chopped salad and mushroom dish. It's easy to understand why they are so great."

  • "Walked in on time and table was ready. Atmosphere was low light and buzzing, a good vibe. Our server was helpful and knowledgeable. He recommended the Stetson salad and a duck apply which we're very good. He also recommended the pastrami short rib, and lamb. 2 in the party got the pastrami ribs, which were spicer then expected and a bit too salty. I got the lamb which everyone liked. My mom got the shank which was the hit of the table. By no means am I a beer snob, but the place had a list of beers about 12 long, only one was a local beer from Arizona, and it was from flagstaff. Disappointed at that. I had the beer which was good tho. We had high expectations based on other reviews, it was a bit of a let down."

  • "Food consistently good but as the place seems to have grown the service and overall atmosphere have become hectic, at least on. Friday. Perhaps worth a try on a weekday."

  • "We discovered cowboy ciao our last night in scottsdale. It was great. The service was everything you would expect at a better restaurant . The food was outstanding beginning with our caprese all the way through the amazing peanut butter bar. Our only regret was we discovered this wonderful restaurant on our last night and we won't be there again soon to try the other items on their menu and experience the great service. We highly recommend you try cowboy ciao I"

  • "This restaurant is a must-visit when you are in Scottsdale. The food and ambiance are quirky and fun. Ordering the Stetson Chopped Salad is a must! So good!! Lots of entree and small plate choices. Our group sampled many of the small plates, and all were fabulous. If there was a (small) letdown, it was the desserts. We ordered three, and all were just ok. Would definitely recommend the homemade ice creams, though, they were wonderful."

  • "WE enjoyed it so much went back the next night for dinner."

  • "Great portions, pastrami spare ribs and Stetson salad were outstsanding, scallops delicious. Lamb sirloin average and beet buckwheat salad needs dressing on the greens- totally disappointing. Very loud, waiter was nice but mediocre service. Good plus, but far from memorable"

  • "The menu is cleverly written and leads customers to believe that there's adventurous eating in store for them, but, alas, the food was very disappointing. The plates were served with very small portions of the main menu item buried in a pile of chips or slaw. I, who typically can't finish all my food at a restaurant, left Cowboy Ciao still hungry and found myself eyeing enviously the diners at nearby outside cafés."

  • "We always go to Cowboy Ciao any time we're in Phoenix. The chopped salad is legendary and the menu always changes and is full of great tasting food!"

  • "....which is probably why I felt a little let down. Love the look of this place and it definitely has "energy" going on all around. Service was good - don't really recall it being excellent or poor...so average. Food good and the mushroom plate is delicious. The gal who took our wine order (two bottles) seemed a little put out that we were looking in the least expensive range. Said something like "well, let me see if I can find something decent on this page". I thought wine snobs went out of fashion a while back? But overall a fun night out with another couple. Would recommend to those who haven't been before."

  • "We were a party of 3 and came in for a late dinner on Sunday. We ordered the scallops on corn grits, pork belly waffles, Cure for the Common Salmon, and the Stetson Chopped salad. All amazing. Desserts were ok - some fun ice cream flavors worth checking out and the bread pudding was solid."

  • "Overall great experience....good food with good service!"

  • "This was our first visit to Cowboy Ciao. Menu had a decent variety of about a dozen entrees. Everything ala carte. Our foursome tried the swordfish, mushroom variety, and the pork chop. All well prepared but nothing to die for. We had a great time, service was excellent. Located in Old Scottsdale it presented a special ambiance. It is a noisy (aka energetic) environment. Tables were well spaced so you didn't feel crowded. No big deal but a little surprised they didn't serve Grey Goose vodka. Now that we've tried Ciao we will move on to other restaurants in the area and maybe circle back in a year. There's a lot of competition in Phoenix area for this level and price range of restaurant."

  • "The meal was excellent, but the prices were VERY high for both food and drinks. It was too loud - very difficult to have a conversation. The restaurant is several years past needing a major renovation. Dated and even dirty. And then there's the valet parking - not run by the restaurant - but parking is very hard to come by in this section of town. Valet parking is to be expected. It took the clearly inebriated valet attendant 30 minutes to get my car. So it was a very expensive, noisy and annoying evening."

  • "My brother and I brought our Dad to spring training and celebrated his 78th B-day at Cowboy Ciao, which came highly recommended. It did not dissappoint. Were seated with in seconds of arriving. Alex was our server and was fantastic throughout the evening. High attention to detail. Felt like we were the only table she was serving even though that was clearly not the case. Jumbo shrimp app was super...pulled pork app ok. Stetson chop and chicken fried trout entrees really delivered. Specialty drinks were top notch and made the night very fun! We'll be back."

  • "We love this place and make sure to have dinner here whenever we're in Scottsdale. The service is above and beyond here, you never feel rushed and you get very personalized and friendly service. The wine list is crazy, so we always ask for a recommendation (which is always great)! The food is amazing and the desserts are too. I highly recommend the Hawaiian Bread Bread Pudding - it's the best thing I've ever had! LOVE THIS PLACE!"

  • "We visit this restaurant every time we visit Scottsdale because we have always loved it. The food on our last visit was very good, although I was surprised my pork shank entree was spicier than I prefer or remembered from prior visits. The chopped salad is very good and the mushroom dish is also outstanding. Service was very good and the wine list is very extensive (almost too extensive)."

  • "Heart of downtown Scottsdale, you can take a walk after dinner. Way too noisy in there but overall a good experience. Short rib dish delivered. Stetson chopped salad is always a hit."

  • "The Stetson Chopped salad is the best!!!! The scallops were great! And, the wine list, extrodinary!"

  • "We have been coming here for years when we are in town for Spring Training. We now feel that we will give it a rest next year. The food is always good, but the service is ridiculously slow. We had a 9:15 reservation, were seated at 9:30, and didn't even get glasses of wine until 10 pm!!! This has happened in past years, too. If we didn't love the chopped salad so much, we probably would have stopped coming here a while ago."

  • "On their extensive wine list was a 1917 Latour, 1974 Joseph Philps Insigna, on and on. The portions are hugh, we ordered the chopped salad, tasty, with fresh ingredients, this was a meal . I also had the ribs, which was a beef rib without a bone. The meat was tender with wonderful flavors. We shared the ice cream dessert, the ice was good but they filled the plate with unnecessary "things" a rice crispy type " thing", some chocolate "thing", just not well put together. Thought the food I ordered went better with beer, so passed on the wine. The service started out well, but waited a while trying to get the check/ getting credit card returned. I would return, but may slit our dishes."

  • "I make Cowboy Ciao a "must stop" on my trips to Phoenix. No more. We were seating next to two very loud tables that went back and forth at each other in a fun but annoying manner. No acknowledgment was made of how obnoxious they were. Food was just ok where it's been great in the past."

  • "We walked through downtown Scottsdale, along the canal, and over the Soleri Bridge. We worked up a little appetite for our dinner, and arrived 15 minutes early. We were graciously seated right away, but a bit too close to the restroom door. In any case, our server was sweet and effective. Everyone is right about the Stetson--you must have it. The entrees were good, but not as memorable...a month later, I can't remember them. This place is definitely a must-do!"

  • "This restaurant is proof that a catchy name can you a lot of mileage. The food was just not very good. The wine list was the most screwed up thing I've ever seen. It's catgories are "Bubbles, White and Red," however within the white and red sections there is no breakdown of the wines according to the type of grape. The wines are organized only by price, requiring one to read every wine on the substantial list. My wife and I were looking for either a Chard or a red Zin. Impossible to find when looking thru a 10-15,page wine list "organized" only according to price. We're wine people who were reduced to drinking a couple of beers, though that was nice for a change. All in all this was a thoroughly unsatisfying restaurant experience."

  • "Loved the quirky menu. Must try the chopped salad - like no other chopped salad I've ever had! Also loved the barbacoa. Yum!"

  • "First time I've been disappointed at CC, and I've been a long time avid fan. The food just isn't special any more. Stetson salad was flat and soggy. Dressing not flavorful. Duck confit rellenos lacked real flavor with almost processed cheese taste excessively applied. I could go on. They're just going through the motions now, cashing on on past glories."
    Dined on 3/3/2014
  • "Excellent service - food presentation was excellent, and we shared several entrees family style. However, we felt the entrees were underseasoned (especially the salmon). Also, while the wine list is impressive in terms of variety and price points, organizing the wine menu by price (instead of by varietal or region) made selection and comparisons difficult, especially with a wine list that seemed to have a hundred pages. Luckly, our server was able to narrow the wine choices for us."

  • "Loved the chopped salad---which was enough for 2. Short rib was tender and delicious; mushroom stir fry on polenta was So Good---and our waiter was nice to tell me the small portion would surely be enough---which it was. Great wine list---but we let him choose---and it went perfectly with our dishes. We would definitely go back any time we're in the area."

  • "Our food was outstanding. The wait staff was incredible. The noise level is high. Unfortunately, a table of 20 people were seated behind us 15 minutes before we were ready to leave. Very, very noisy and these people were inconsiderate of other diners and the wait staff. They were rude (not the restaaurants fault). The wine list is way too large and the wines by the glass are not all that good. But the food - the food is incredible. The chopped salad was incredible. The scallops were perfect, as was the risotto. The lamb chop was grilled perfectly The ingredients in the Quesadilla del Dia change daily. Our's was fabulous. The bread putting incredible. The wait staff was the best wait staff I have experienced in the past few years."

  • "Went back to Cowboy Ciao after many years and I must say that the food is good but the wine list is not cheap. It is certainly an interesting list, but AZ definitely makes me long for the CA BYOs we used to frequent. Fortunately, there are a few BYO's in AZ that really provide great meals and which we will continue to frequent. I have yet to find a meal anywhere that draws me away from a great meal that can be had at an AZ BYO restaurant. Still, we have always loved the Chopped salad and would definitely recommend it! The duck that night was very tasty. If you are someone who likes to have beer or spirits with your meal, I would recommend Cowboy Ciao but if you want an affordable really good glass of wine, that will not happen here."
