A word from Coup D'Etat
A smart and stylish restaurant and bar. Coup D'etat is ideal for groups large and small, it offers a private dining room and throughout the restaurant there are lounge areas, tables, and booths for smaller groups. The food is approachable, modern, and contemporary. The cocktail program is equally smart with reinterpretations of classic drinks as well as new creations.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Came here for my birthday dinner and as part of restaurant week. I had been here for drinks only before and was excited to try this place due to good reviews in local publications. Our entrees took over an hour to get, they were out of the desserts we wanted, and when we did finally get our entrees, they were cold and improperly cooked. We did speak with management and they made several concessions on our bill as well as offered a gift card to encourage us to come back once they make changes. Overall - not pleased with our experience this night but relatively happy with how management handled the situation. Our server was great, although she was openly embarrassed we had such a bad experience. The cocktails are great."

  • "We tried Coup D'Etat for restaurant week and were glad we did. It was a wonderful dinner. The salads were just the right size and filled with great choices as were the entrees for the quality of food preparation. The scallops and spinach linguine were fantastic and it was clear they do not hold back on the best ingredients. Our server worked hard to please us as did the bartender when we arrived early for a cocktail. We will be back."

  • "such a nice place, good food...asked server if fish wild caught, no hesitation she said 'yes'...why is that not then listed on menu, seems rare enough to find wild caught it would be listed as wild caught...my only complaint is on open table well in advance only times for reservation of 2 people was 5pm or 8pm...and the restaurant from 5 to 8 while we were dining...over 3/4 empty...what is up with THAT???"

  • "We went to Coup D'Etat to celebrate a milestone birthday. We ordered steak tartar and polenta to share as appetizers and each of us ordered a main course. To have to say the wine was the only pleasant part of the meal is really hitting a low point in a rating scale. The main courses were in some cases bland and overcooked (sea bass), in other cases, too salty and only a poor imitation of what the dish should have been (two pasta dishes). Overpriced for food that was not well-prepared. I have never cared to or taken the time to write a negative review, but because this was such a special occasion for us and all of us were very disappointed, I thought I should. May others be warned and not make the same expensive mistake."

  • "A trendy somewhat pricey in the heart of uptown life restaurant. The food was very good as it should be and it may be a good people watching location. We were at a table next to a window overlooking The Lagoon theater so we loved the view. The servers were especially gracious and responsive. What bothered me most was the flies. They may be hard to control with all the activity in and out of the outdoor areas but they were very bothersome. I even caught one out of the air as it flew across my plate but it was soon replaced by others of it's squadron. I do not practice catch and release. It is too bad that this is one of my strongest memories of the restaurant. Oh, and the Octopus appetizer was delicious as were the Gnocchi."

  • "Some things were great, some were disappointing. The Burrata salad, highly recommended by the server, was a major disappointment. The burratta was nowhere near as creamy as most, the 'salad' portion of it was all but hidden, generally not good. On the other hand, the spaghetti with meatballs was probably the best I've had anywhere at any price. Nice thick and clingy sauce with a balanced seasoning, the meatballs were spicy and delicious, and the pasta was properly portioned and perfectly al dente. The gnocchi was excellent, crispy exterior and creamy interior, truffle was not overpowering. The cheese cake dessert was also disappointing -- I've had better out of a vending machine."

  • "Lovely July evening on the upper patio celebrating our anniversary. Sea Bass and pork were delicious. Asparagus salad was outstanding."

  • "This place has food for everyone - from pizzas to steaks and seafood and pasta. All were good. The proportions of the main dishes were ample but not overly super-sized, which I liked. I had the fettuccini and it was great and tasty wight being heavy. My husband had 3 large scallops done perfectly. We were disappointed the brussle sprouts were no longer on the menu, but the asparagus was good too."

  • "This was my first visit to Coup D'Etat. Frankly, I was disappointed. Our hostess was very distracted, even though we were the only ones waiting. The service for the rest of the meal was pretty uninspired as well. The individual who dropped off the cheese plate didn't bother to stay and explain what cheeses were presented. As we were ordering our meals, we were informed that they were out of six different dishes. For a menu as small as they have, that seemed a bit excessive. I can understand running out of fresh fish, but they were out of spaghetti and chocolate cake as well. Really?!? I always give places a second chance, and will do so for Coup D'Etat, so I hope they can pull it together."

  • "This was our third visit. The food this time was just OK. Soggy fish and chips. The skate which was great has gone from the menu. Drinks are good with a good draft beer list. I see it as more appropriate for bar scene/flatbreads vs dinner. The bar is large and central. A fun space."

  • "Decided to try this restaurant out for my husband's birthday. Service started out really slow, we had a 6pm reservation and our server had too many tables until the second shift came in. The food was all cooked perfect and was very flavorful. Portions are small for the price and the plates they were on. We didn't end up ordering dessert, so our server just put a candle on a plate to celebrate. Probably should just skip that altogether."

  • "Great location, fun atmosphere, and great people watching. Approachable menu and excellent cocktails -- the Best Summer Ever was the best drink ever! Well balanced and complex. The scallops were too aggressively seasoned for me, but this is par for the course for team O'Leary-Roberts. Would definitely go back."

  • "We went to Coup D'Etat not knowing exactly why others were drawn to it. For us, in retrospect, it was the exquisitely crafted cocktails that set it apart from other Uptown venues. Our waiter, Mark, seemed much more enthused about describing each of the drinks on the menu than he was in describing the food items on the menu. And that's how we felt when we tried both. The drinks were amazing. The food was adequate. We'd return to Coup D'Etat again, but more for what's in their glasses than what's on their plates."

  • "Food was good and great flavors service was spotty. Waiter was in a zone that didn't include the customer. I shouldn't need to flag down 3 different waiters to get some cracked pepper on my meal. But the flavors were very good. Beet salad and cauliflower were tops"

  • "Coup d'etat is a great place to go when one wants to treat oneself and break out of one's routine. The emphasis there is on quality of food, service, and atmosphere. The dishes are imaginative but not weird. One goes there for the excellent food, and everything else matches that exellence. A good place to take guests froom out-of-town to show off the options in Uptown."

  • "The food was very mediocre for the price. I took my girlfriend here to celebrate her birthday and they didn't offer anything special for the occasion, which was disappointing."

  • "Went here for brunch on Father's day. They did not have the rolling bloody Mary cart as advertised on their website, but the bloody Marys' were raved about by my companions. This space is very cool; open floor plan and unique decor. The food was also pretty tasty, with a few exceptions. The quiche, avocado sandwich and shrimp and grits were very delicious. The vegetable hash was decent (the hollandaise was great, but there wasn't enough veggies) and the egg scramble was a little bit under-seasoned. The service was adequate, but they did appear somewhat understaffed. Overall, I would definitely go back; maybe try dinner next time. Also, seems like a great place for a special occasion!"

  • "Really wanted to like the restaurant but food was mediocre and service was horrible. Getting coffee and tea was an effort. Food was slow and came trickling out so one person was done before another started. Weird thing is that they had lots of staff-just no sense of customer service."

  • "We enjoyed the food but the noise level made it hard for the four of us to have a conversation."

  • "Sat indoors on the upper level. Rather loud for the amount of people seated but warming decorum. Took a while to order but food quickly came once we did. Very small fish portion but nicely sized steak for the price and taste."

  • "Very disappointing evening. Very loud music in the restaurant so we went outside where it was even louder. We are love frog's legs but Coup D'Etat's version was right out of the State Fair. Heavily fried with a sweet sauce. Fish and Chips were too salty as well. The restaurant was not busy, but service was very slow. We thought we were in for a French evening, but that certainly was not the case."

  • "We ordered the bone marrow and deviled eggs to start. I had Arctic char and hubby had lamb. Hubby liked the big portions. Beautiful presentation and everything tasted yummy. Wish we had more baguette for the bone marrow but other than that it was awesome. Very lively atmosphere and had a great view of the mixologists from the 2nd floor."

  • "5 girlfriends and I went to Coup D'Etat for my birthday. The booth was perfect - fit everyone comfortably. The atmosphere was vibrant, and really quite loud - for us that was fine and actually provided great energy for the evening. We all started with champagne and cocktails. The champagne was delivered with great service, and the cocktails were perfectly hand-crafted. For starters, our favorites were the beet salad and the asparagus. For our main entrees, most of us ordered fish - either swordfish or halibut - and everyone was pleased. The portions aren't huge, but rather right sized to be able to order sides and feel comfortable for a night out afterwards."

  • "Extremely loud! Don't plan on visiting with friends unless you're going to text them from across the table. I ordered the beet salad and the pork tenderloin. The beet salad was good ( not too hard to screw that up) but the pork ( when it finally arrived 40 minutes later) was over-cooked! It was like chewing on thick cut Canadian bacon. The butter beans mushy and the fava beans undercooked. Service was lacking but polite when available. My friends were also underwhelmed and disappointed with the food and the noise level. For the price ($50.00 w/o alcohol) I expect much better... I won't be back as there are too many other restaurants in the Twin Cities that are far better"

  • "Wonderful food, however I have experienced problems with getting seating. Typically there is a long wait and many open tables. Not sure why but as a waiting customer it is tough to understand the seating process here. With reservations on a Saturday night, we ( a group of 4) were able to get right in --but were denied a booth. We were told by the host that the booths are only for parties of 6. While dining at a table overlooking the restaurant our foursome could not help but notice a party of two having a great time in one of the oversized booth."

  • "If you are young and into a loud and dynamic bar scene, this place is for you. The architecture and decor are stunning and the patrons are chic. It's definitely a place to "see and be seen". That said...it is incredibly loud and has a somewhat frenetic feel. It was impossible to have a good conversation, even though I was there with only one other person. I cannot imagine trying to converse with a group! The food is artfully prepared and is probably better than I am rating it. In a quieter restaurant I would have been able to focus on it and appreciate it more."

  • "I ate dinner at Coup D'Etat with my partner and son. Service was adequate and friendly. We ate around 7 pm on a Wednesday night and most of the tables were open. We ordered the fresh lettuces salad, two thin crust pizzas and the pasta with peas and carrots. The salad dressing overwhelmed the lettuces which were actually fresh. The pizzas were very thin crust, crispy and tasty. The pasta dish, however, was a joke. In the bowl there were about 8 small filled pastas and a "parmesan" broth which looked like thin vege broth that had been foamed. Literally... there was a pile of foam on the pasta. Very unappetizing. The cooks must have felt stingy about the veges too. There were maybe 12 peas and 1 chunk of diced carrot in the midst of the pasta."

  • "The two bartenders we encountered were less than enthusiastic. Likewise, our brief encounter with one of the owners was abrupt and off-hand. Our server was very nice but obviously had too many tables assigned to him as he wasn't as attentive as he should have/could have been. Food was unremarkable. My wife's dishes were heavily salted (steak & whipped potatoes). "Stuffed" popover was a congealed mess & burned. My pasta was bland. Our friends liked their char & scallops. Menu & wine prices were good. Restaurant was so loud that we had a hard time hearing each other across the table. We were seated at one of the second-level "window" tables open to the outdoor patio and it was still overly-loud. Doubt that we will return."

  • "The rack of lamb was served close to raw (had asked for medium rare) and was about 80% fat. Amazed they went ahead and cooked these pieces and then went ahead and served them to me. The server was startled to see at the end of the meal that I had been served essentially a bunch of raw lamb fat and removed the charge from the bill. But still, why did I ever get served this in the first place?"
