Diner Reviews
  • "We usually love our experience at Costanera, but this past visit was notably disappointing. It took over an hour to get our food and as a result, we had complications with the parking garage ticket and fee. We are not sure what the back up was, but for not even ordering an appetizer or dessert- it was just water and two entrees, we will think twice about returning."

  • "Great food, fabulous staff, the owner is gracious and welcoming - it has been a great experience every time we have gone. And we will be back!"

  • "Took real foodie friends here - produced food shows for FoodTV and each of our meals was fantastic. Two ceviches - mussels- hangar steak - fish stew - branzino - sorry I don't have the Peruvian names ,but no leftovers! We will return"

  • "Lots of great tastes to explore! Will come again. Service was very good on a holiday night. Good for vegetarians as well as meat eaters."

  • "We love Costanera.....we go there everytime we need a peruvian fix...we have introduced many of our friends too, who now go there regularly. This time though, they had a new waiter, who needs training obviously...screwed up our order and the Ceviche came with peppered tuna...never heard of it!"

  • "Tried the tuna tiradito and it was amazing! If you like seared or raw tuna, it is a must! The mixto ceviche was awesome too. Had the chicken which was good, and a steak chimichurri which was a little fatty but excellent. The dipping sauces were fabulous and the yucca was the best I have had."

  • "Me and my husband love this restaurant. We loved it so much that we had our Rehearsal Dinner there and everyone enjoyed the location, food and ambience. The services was great and so was the manager. I would highly recommend this place!!!!"

  • "We won a free dinner to the restaurant from a neighborhood auction and the staff could not have been nicer. The chef prepared us a special three course meal which was absolutely wonderful. The steak and chicken, in particular, were cooked and marinated perfectly and the desserts were to die for. We were a a little reluctant to go since we don't like spicy food, but we had a great dining experience. This is a true gem of a neighborhood restaurant to try."

  • "The four of us really enjoyed our meal at Costanera's. The food was delicious, portions were a good size. The wait staff was really friendly. We would go back next time we find ourselves in town."

  • "The restaurant is small with tables pretty close together. Service was good and waiters were attentive. I started with a salad which was OK but not great. I wished they would have tossed it instead of placing the various components on the plate separately. I then chose seafood with yellow rice. My seafood included two large shrimp, two or three mussels and one or two oysters but was mostly calamari (which could have been good if that is your favorite seafood) and tons of rice. My husband and friend both chose the lamb shank which they both loved. The prices were reasonable for entrees most were in the mid twenties. We did not choose any desserts but the selection looked interesting. I would go back and order a different entree."

  • "The best Lomo I've had that's not homemade. The food does take a good amount of time to reach the table, but in the ends it's always worth it."

  • "Our experience here was great ! Service was great. I had the special of the night, Branzino fish with a side quinoa, it was all sooooo delicious ! My husband had a steak dinner which was also good. We finished with a tries leches desert because people raved about it . WELL it was amazing! We will absolutely be back and recommend our friends and family."

  • "I had been meaning to try Costanera for some time and finally got around to it. Now that I have, I'm not sure why it took me so long. The service was excellent, the food was quite good and our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and helpful in making recommendations for dishes. Please, for the love of everything, if you go there get the mussels, you will not regret it! I had the lomo, which was good, but not great. My dining companion had the fresh fish of the day and enjoyed it immensely. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area or visiting the area."

  • "We have been to Costanera twice and enjoyed both experiences. The ceviche is delish, as were the mussels ap. Our main courses were good, but not as good as our first time. Overall a v. enjoyable meal. "

  • "Costanera is the place for anyone who loves a great meal. The food is outstanding! Don't forget to order the dessert. The chocolate mousse is out of this world!!!!"

  • "The food and service continue to be top notch. The lamb was amazing and the mussels appetizer also can be a good dinner entre."

  • "I have eaten here several times over the past few years. As always, the food was fresh and well-prepared. I especially recommend the ceviche, though was sorry to see one of my favorite vegetarian appetizers was no longer on the menu. The service was courteous and attentive."

  • "Really enjoyed the oysters. Service was excellent Everyone was friendly and accomodating including the patrons"

  • "Excellent service and very good food, menu is rather short but you will find good variety even for non-peruvian dishes."

  • "There is no question the food is good. The service is great (although the elapsed time between apps and entrées was too long). The ambience is just right -- vibrant with clientele and just the right amount of rustic. However, the whole menu is overpriced. I am Peruvian. I've tried many different restaurants and have home-cooked meals as a baseline for my palate. While really tasty, no meal is worth its price and portions are small. I know a few places with better food but much better prices. The location may have a great deal to do with it but still. That is not to take away from La Costanera. Like I said, the food is good. The escabeche is actually great! But not worth what it's priced. All in all, a nice place for a special occasion."

  • "Every dish we ordered was fantastic, as was the service we received. I highly recommend the grilled whole fish (Bronzino, on the day I dined) and the spaghetti and steak (with the most amazing pesto). Don't skip dessert, either!"

  • "We had dinner on Saturday night 4/5 with our two friends. Food was excellent, along with the service. I had red snapper that was slightly spicy and delicious and my husband had the cod which was also good. The chicken kabab appetizers were also very good. My friends had the rice with seafood and cerviche which they also said was excellent. The dim lighting was a nice atmosphere but made it a little difficult to see the menu. The manager was very kind to let us stay long after the bill was paid. We will definetely be back and recommend this to our friends."

  • "We had read good reviews and decided to give Costanera a try. No regrets! We had a wonderful dinner of small plates and dessert. It is BYOB and that is always a nice perk. Even though the restaurant was full the whole evening, it was never too noisy to talk. Great place for us to return to in Montclair."

  • "The food was delicious. As a foodie, I must say that was exquisite peruvian food. I had the lamb and it was amazing...we tried the lomo saltado and the causa de cangrejo and the ceviche and everything was delicious. Native peruvian approved, I just needed a pisco sour, but they don't have liquor license...so just bring your favorite wine. The service was good although I must say they can totally take advantage that there are so many people that are new to peruvian food, so introducing their favorites dishes (hence upselling) would not be a bad idea. The area is quiet, although parking can be a pain. I was pleased that I drove almost 40 minutes to this place and it didn't disappoint. Desserts were great too."

  • "My wife and I drove up to Montcalir. NJ for a yoga workshop and had the pleasure of dining at Costanera on a Friday night. We started with the costanera ceviche - which was a wonderful dish. The ceviche juice was not too tart or sweet and the seafood melted in your mouth like butter. This was followed by a dish of Causas (mashed potato cakes filled with avocado). Again the Chef's use of ingredients was perfect. For the main course we shared a Peruvian seafood stew & an Atlantic Cod dish. Both were superior dishes. Do not miss the opportunity to have a meal at Costanera restaurant - you will enjoy!!"

  • "The restaurant is very nice as far as ambience and decor. Very well located in the middle of Montclair. Music is latin. BYOB is always good. The menu is one of those where you have to read it over and over to make a choice because you want everything. Nice trick because all we could talk about was what we would try when we came back. The catch here is the food. Service is OK. Our waiter was nice. You can tell they need training. For example, serving a seafood bouillabaise without a spoon, not placing the right type of glass for the wine you're opening. But to me that's minor. Recommend: crab causa and tiradito or ceviche appetizer; picante de marisco entree; tres leches , arroz con Leche/mazamorra, lucuma ice cream for dessert."

  • "I didn't know what to expect when I made the reservation. Was not familiar with Peruvian food, but have had other South American cuisine. The fish was very fresh and the dishes were excellent. I also had the ceviche misto which was the best I have outside of being in Mexico or South America. Prices were a little high, but the portions were good. Will definitely be going back, soon."

  • "After being seated 30 minutes late we got the worst table in the place, slow service, steak was chewy, very disappointing overall. I dont believe we will be back."

  • "Upon entering Costanera, I thought maybe we had made a mistake choosing this restaurant -the place was noisy and crowded but it turned out to be s fun, delicious experience. We wanted to have Peruvian food for a change and we very happy with all of our choices. Will definitely go back."

  • "Food was very flavorful. We tried the seafood and the steak and loved both."

  • "Service is warm, friendly and fairly attentive, it is also unrushed. Seafood is fresh, extensive choices from shellfish bar to fish. For a neighborhood place, they have some nyc attitude (you have to confirm your reservation the day before or they can cancel!) Our water glass was never refilled, plates were not removed. It's not particularly vegetarian friendly, the veg options are rather bland comparatively. We had flan which was just OK. Coffee way too expensive, $4 for an espresso. All in all i think its my favorite restaurant in Montclair."
    Dined on 2/21/2014
  • "We had a great time trying starters recommended by our waiter. By far the best was the Chicharon de Pescado. Quinoa-crusted fish bites that were absolutely dynamite. The seafood stew was filled with plenty of different types of seafood and the lamb shank was delicious. Their special that evening was mussels with garlic and chorizo which was also terrific. We ended the evening with flan (plenty for two people to share) and espressos and cappuccinos. Go!"

  • "My wife and I recently went there for a post Valentines night out with a concert. Cause of the snowfall, we were running late and were afraid of being late for the concert. Our server was awesome in making sure we got our food faster and getting out in time! All this plus the food was amazing! We can't wait to go there again when we can actually spend more time there enjoying the food and atmosphere."

  • "I've eaten here a couple of times. The staff is friendly. The owner stopped by our table and was entirely gracious. The food was amazing but the chef was heavy-handed on salt, which I typically love, but I must say it could have used a bit less because it was so delicious it did not need to lean on this condiment."

  • "Definitely a Montclair gem and always busy. Now I know why - dishes are just enough different to be exciting and news worthy. The siviche is excellent and bountiful, 1 serving was enough for 2. The beef was extremely flavorful and the day boat scallops were well priced. Vegtables and use of yam added flavor that did not fight with the seafood or meat. And then there was dessert - how nice to see something a little different - I could eat the Tres Leches every day and the Combinado puddings are a wonderful regional treat. Good proportions, plus, excellent coffee and espresso, something a few of the celebrated Montcair restaurants could learn from."
