Diner Reviews
  • "Every dish we ordered was fantastic, as was the service we received. I highly recommend the grilled whole fish (Bronzino, on the day I dined) and the spaghetti and steak (with the most amazing pesto). Don't skip dessert, either!"

  • "We had dinner on Saturday night 4/5 with our two friends. Food was excellent, along with the service. I had red snapper that was slightly spicy and delicious and my husband had the cod which was also good. The chicken kabab appetizers were also very good. My friends had the rice with seafood and cerviche which they also said was excellent. The dim lighting was a nice atmosphere but made it a little difficult to see the menu. The manager was very kind to let us stay long after the bill was paid. We will definetely be back and recommend this to our friends."

  • "We had read good reviews and decided to give Costanera a try. No regrets! We had a wonderful dinner of small plates and dessert. It is BYOB and that is always a nice perk. Even though the restaurant was full the whole evening, it was never too noisy to talk. Great place for us to return to in Montclair."

  • "The food was delicious. As a foodie, I must say that was exquisite peruvian food. I had the lamb and it was amazing...we tried the lomo saltado and the causa de cangrejo and the ceviche and everything was delicious. Native peruvian approved, I just needed a pisco sour, but they don't have liquor license...so just bring your favorite wine. The service was good although I must say they can totally take advantage that there are so many people that are new to peruvian food, so introducing their favorites dishes (hence upselling) would not be a bad idea. The area is quiet, although parking can be a pain. I was pleased that I drove almost 40 minutes to this place and it didn't disappoint. Desserts were great too."

  • "My wife and I drove up to Montcalir. NJ for a yoga workshop and had the pleasure of dining at Costanera on a Friday night. We started with the costanera ceviche - which was a wonderful dish. The ceviche juice was not too tart or sweet and the seafood melted in your mouth like butter. This was followed by a dish of Causas (mashed potato cakes filled with avocado). Again the Chef's use of ingredients was perfect. For the main course we shared a Peruvian seafood stew & an Atlantic Cod dish. Both were superior dishes. Do not miss the opportunity to have a meal at Costanera restaurant - you will enjoy!!"

  • "The restaurant is very nice as far as ambience and decor. Very well located in the middle of Montclair. Music is latin. BYOB is always good. The menu is one of those where you have to read it over and over to make a choice because you want everything. Nice trick because all we could talk about was what we would try when we came back. The catch here is the food. Service is OK. Our waiter was nice. You can tell they need training. For example, serving a seafood bouillabaise without a spoon, not placing the right type of glass for the wine you're opening. But to me that's minor. Recommend: crab causa and tiradito or ceviche appetizer; picante de marisco entree; tres leches , arroz con Leche/mazamorra, lucuma ice cream for dessert."

  • "I didn't know what to expect when I made the reservation. Was not familiar with Peruvian food, but have had other South American cuisine. The fish was very fresh and the dishes were excellent. I also had the ceviche misto which was the best I have outside of being in Mexico or South America. Prices were a little high, but the portions were good. Will definitely be going back, soon."

  • "After being seated 30 minutes late we got the worst table in the place, slow service, steak was chewy, very disappointing overall. I dont believe we will be back."

  • "Food was very flavorful. We tried the seafood and the steak and loved both."

  • "Upon entering Costanera, I thought maybe we had made a mistake choosing this restaurant -the place was noisy and crowded but it turned out to be s fun, delicious experience. We wanted to have Peruvian food for a change and we very happy with all of our choices. Will definitely go back."

  • "Service is warm, friendly and fairly attentive, it is also unrushed. Seafood is fresh, extensive choices from shellfish bar to fish. For a neighborhood place, they have some nyc attitude (you have to confirm your reservation the day before or they can cancel!) Our water glass was never refilled, plates were not removed. It's not particularly vegetarian friendly, the veg options are rather bland comparatively. We had flan which was just OK. Coffee way too expensive, $4 for an espresso. All in all i think its my favorite restaurant in Montclair."

  • "We had a great time trying starters recommended by our waiter. By far the best was the Chicharon de Pescado. Quinoa-crusted fish bites that were absolutely dynamite. The seafood stew was filled with plenty of different types of seafood and the lamb shank was delicious. Their special that evening was mussels with garlic and chorizo which was also terrific. We ended the evening with flan (plenty for two people to share) and espressos and cappuccinos. Go!"

  • "Definitely a Montclair gem and always busy. Now I know why - dishes are just enough different to be exciting and news worthy. The siviche is excellent and bountiful, 1 serving was enough for 2. The beef was extremely flavorful and the day boat scallops were well priced. Vegtables and use of yam added flavor that did not fight with the seafood or meat. And then there was dessert - how nice to see something a little different - I could eat the Tres Leches every day and the Combinado puddings are a wonderful regional treat. Good proportions, plus, excellent coffee and espresso, something a few of the celebrated Montcair restaurants could learn from."

  • "I've eaten here a couple of times. The staff is friendly. The owner stopped by our table and was entirely gracious. The food was amazing but the chef was heavy-handed on salt, which I typically love, but I must say it could have used a bit less because it was so delicious it did not need to lean on this condiment."

  • "My wife and I recently went there for a post Valentines night out with a concert. Cause of the snowfall, we were running late and were afraid of being late for the concert. Our server was awesome in making sure we got our food faster and getting out in time! All this plus the food was amazing! We can't wait to go there again when we can actually spend more time there enjoying the food and atmosphere."

  • "We ate at Costanera on Feb 1, and it was not as good as the previous times we were there. The food tasted somewhat bland and underseasoned, the Peruvian Chicken was a little dry, and the service was uninspired. If this was my first time there, I would not go back; however, the food and service has been much better on previous visits, so we'll give it one more chance."

  • "After waiting for over a year to go to this restaurant - finally my kids gave me '' My Bithday surprise'' What a disappointment - I had been all over the world at Peruvian Restaurant and never have seen the '' Lomo saltado'' serve without rice... And the special desert '' Arroz con Leche'' side with the Mazamorra Morada - sure the combination just does not go !! I don't mind the price - If a so call " Peruvian Restaurant'' is more genuine - specially that my native country is'' Peru'' I will not recomend this restaurant at all"

  • "We have eaten here three times and the food is quite tasty. Tiraditos are terrific, quinoa side awesome and the seafood selection great. A few dishes lacked some of the usual spicy and well seasoned kick we are used to here. The hype has died down so it is vibrant but not crazy crowded. Service good-but inconsistent."

  • "We had steaks - rib eye was excellent. And cerviche Appetizer really good as well. Really good place - My only criticism is that you could not substitute a vegetable for a starch. The waiter said the owner doesn't allow it. In this day and age where many want to eat healthier - that is ridiculous. Was going to get Hanger steak but waiter said not to get it without the fries??? He said the plate would be too small without the fries. For the prices you pay, they should allow you to substitute to veggies."

  • "The restaurant was surprisingly busy for the middle of a Sunday afternoon but service was very pleasant, helpful and attentive. Had the mussel special for an appetizer and the cod and seafood stew for main courses. Thought the seafood was very fresh but all dishes could have used more spice. Adding the condiment served with the dried corn helped a lot. Enjoyed the dinner and will return."

  • "Anyone who dines in Montclair on a regular basis knows what challenges you face when trying to get a Saturday night reservation. There are those who don't take reservations, those who keep the prime times open just for their regulars, others who are booked 6 weeks out and others who just aren't on Open Table. Costanera, isn't one of them! We eat here probably 8-10 times a year. I'm embarrassed to say, I get the exact same entree every single time! The rib eye steak, served with a fried egg on top, (optional), is crazy good. Just sitting here writing, I wish I had a piece leftover from Saturday night....that is never the case!!! The food is authentic, beautifully prepared and serving sizes are more than adequate. Don't miss this one!"

  • "My husband and I went to Costanera with the hope to enjoy a fantastic Peruvian meal, as we already had been in Peru and we had fallen in love with their food. Costanera didn't disappoint us. It was fantastic. The 'ceviche mixto' is really tasty and the oysters were super fresh. The service was very friendly and we weren't charged corkage fees for our bottle of wine (the place is BYOB). We will back again soon."

  • "I'll keep it simple. I have nothing bad to say about Costanera. We ordered a special appetizer, fried quinoa and oyster po'boy Sliders...they were different and tasty. For our main course, we split the large lamb shank which was flavourful, tender (falling off the bone), and juicy...tasted so good. The staff was nice and helpful all throughout."

If you want to enjoy a nice quiet evening than this is the place. We survived the snow storm just to get there. Will definitely return when I am back in town and recommend it to all.43ps"
