We were both impressed by the food - a salad, Coq au Vin, and chocolate mousse for just $20 each. As a Coq au Vin newby, I think I may have found my favorite French dish. It came with two big pieces of moist chicken, smothered in a red wine sauce, and adorned with mushrooms and thick bacon pieces. It laid on a bed of tasty mashed potatoes. Delicious comfort food. The chocolate mousse wasn't half bad either! My fish was crispy on the edges and moist inside.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMCoquette - excellente cuisineDining at Coquette Cafe in Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward was a delightful, fine-dining experience without the typical accompanying exorbitant bill. As one would expect in a French style restaurant, the French Onion Soup with gruyere cheese was excellent, however a cauliflower based soup, which was a special of the evening, was incredible. The entrees we ordered, Casserole of Sautéed Eggplant and a daily special of tilapia served with saffron and sugar snap were perfectly prepared. Leave room for the Crème Brulée as it was among the best I have ever enjoyed. Service was well timed and the server was very cordial.

They were EXTREMELY accommodating, even to the point of possibly adding 3 more to our party at last minute, even though it didn't need to be. Called 15 min before reservation to let them know we would be 15 late because Church ended late :) We were greeted promptly. Within 5 min of sitting down our beverage order was taken. Food arrived promptly. The quality of the food was impeccable. I had chicken pesto sandwich with phenomenal French fries, something I rarely eat! Everyone loved their food. The waitress was very attentive & personable. When asked if she added gratuity she said she forgot. Asked what percentage was, indicated 18%. I told her we gave her 21%. On this visit I had the trout and it was both fabulous and complemented with very tasty accouterments. My dining companion had the grilled hanger steak, done to perfection and one of their most popular entrees. The service was extraordinary. Our server, Zoe, was especially helpful in helping us decide on our entrees and made the evening extra special. As a side-note, two friends showed up at the restaurant as we were about half-way through our main course and the staff sat them with us, served their meal apace and made the entire experience seamless. As a starter, we ordered mussels which were just right. They tasted perfectly fresh, in a broth that was not too garlicky. My main course was the hanger steak with french fries. I have tried a lot of french fries in my life, these were tops, crisp but not too hard outside, fresh potato taste inside, not too salty. The steak was dabbed in a mushroom-red wine reduction that was so good, rich in wine taste, that I soaked up the last drop with my bread. The meat melted in your mouth.
Three other observations: The light at the tables could be better. I like to see what I eat. I always have the travelers. The sauce on the salmon was delicious, but overpowered the salmon, I thought. I wanted to drink the sauce the mussles were in, but thought that was tacky.
