A word from Coquette Cafe
Nestled in the Landmark Building in The Historic Third Ward, Coquette Cafe serves up authentic bistro fare in warm, casual surroundings. Coquette is the kind of place where guests can pop in any time of day for everything from French Onion Soup and Flatbread Pizza to Crisp Provincal Roast Chicken. Whether it's cozying up to the bar for a glass of provincial French wine or exclusively brewed French ale, or having dinner or a small banquet in one of its three bustling dining areas, Chefs and Co- Owners Nick Burki and Chris Hatleli and their wonderful staff are eager to accommodate one's every need. Although brand new in February of 1999, Coquette's informal decor blends well with its vintage surroundings. The dark wood, mirrored back bar and glowing gold walls invite you in to experience top quality and unassuming fare that you might find in the home kitchens of French grandmothers. Continued

  • "I always like the really casual French bistro atmosphere, great for sitting around and drinking wine and socializing. Friendly service, great onion soup. "

  • "The restaurant was fairly busy when my date and I arrived, but we were seated at a quiet window table, perfect for the two of us. I am always hesitant to try french toast in restaurants as this is typically an extremely bland dish. Coquette Cafe's Pain Perdu is a noteworthy exception and heavenly from beginning to end!! My date reported that his grilled chicken sandwich tasted like olive oil, at first, but that the flavor got better as he ate. Finally, the desserts...my date had no comment about his chocolate mousse, but my creme brulee was decadent...I wished there had been more, but the portion size was quite reasonable. My date and I will likely be back!"

  • "We were a party of five and had the most wonderful brunch on Easter Sunday. We arrived a few minutes earlier than our reservation, so we were able to have a beverage at the bar. Staff was so welcoming and friendly. Promptly at our reserved time we were seated. Our waitress was so friendly and helpful. The food ordered came out timely and was hot and delicious. We were not rushed at all and the ambience was such that one felt very relaxed. Not noisy at all. A very pleasant experience and a place we will go again. "

  • "My wife and I had Easter brunch and the food and service was excellent. You should give it a try."

  • "Our family of 4 had Easter brunch at Coquette Cafe and all of us were truly happy with our meals. Standard eggs benedict was better than any I've ever had. We appreciated details like fresh squeezed juice and attentive waitstaff. "

  • "Coquette Cafe is always an excellent dining choice. The food is very good, delicious and well prepared, especially the Travel Menu."

  • "A trip to Coquette is always wonderful! Love the casual Sophistication, the delightful service from well trained and attentive staff and of course...the delicious food! Selecting this place is always a sure thing for a well prepared meal at a reasonable price. I am never disappointed. "

  • "Authentic French bistro with killer atmosphere and great service. It was my first trip to Milwaukee and I'll return every time I'm in town. Best to make reservations. YUM!!!"

  • "This restaurant is still quite a gem in Milwaukee's "Third Ward"."

  • "We hadn't eaten at Coquette in a while but decided to give it a try with friends. We were impressed that, despite the charm of the place, the food and the service have taken a real dive since our last visit. The menu is fairly expensive and not very creative. A lot of dishes with meat and heavy sauces and not many lighter fare offerings. The fish was limited and the flavor was drowned by sauces that made it very hard to tell what you were eating. The biggest disappointment was the service, however. We were seated promptly but not offered a menu for nearly an hour. Our main courses weren't on the table until 90 minutes into the meal and after we complained to the maitre d. Poor service, ordinary food. Not coming back"

  • "Coquette Cafe is about as close as you can get to a real Parisian bistro-cafe without flying to France. The food is always excellent, and the ambience is very pleasant. It's a real gem in the Milwaukee food scene."
    Dined on 4/11/2014
  • "We ate there Wednesday night April 9 with a nice table by the window. Caesar Salad was disappointing. Not a lot of flavor. Beef Short ribs were very good but pieces were quite fatty (which can happen with short ribs). Coq co Vin was very nice. Hanger steak was tough……almost too tough to chew. Desserts were nice…great Creme Brûlée. Cooking school in the back room was noisy in the dining room. We were somewhat disappointed for our guest."

  • "We always get a great meal when we eat at Coquette Cafe - that's why we keep going back. Their french toast is wonderful, as are their other dishes."

  • "I took my best friend out to dinner for his birthday and I think coquette cafe was a great choice, we had plans after dinner that we had to get too pretty quick and I just let our waitress know and she sped us along but it was still very enjoyable and delicious."

  • "After a busy week, we wanted a lovely dinner and relaxing evening. Coquette's grilled salmon was just delicious and the perfect portion size. The waiter was solicitous without being overbearing. We were able to simply enjoy a lovely evening of conversation without any glitches in the dinner. Perfect."

  • "Our third time here, and we have yet to be disappointed. Everything was very well prepared, and the service was very attentitive."

  • "I went here with my parents to celebrate their respective birthdays, and we had a wonderful time. The food options were great! The taste was magnificent, the service was excellent, and the parking is provided & free. They had some classic French food, but it's not super super french, though the taste is fairly authentic for some dishes. I had the Coq au Vin, and it was splendid! Check this place out if you get the chance!"

  • "My wife and I choose Coquette for our Anniversary celebration and we were not disappointed. We had wonderful food and amazing service at extremely reasonable prices. I will recommend this restaurant to my friends and family. Thank you for a great evening. Bravo to Coquette Café."

  • "My colleague and I dined here while on business. We both had a very good meal. We both got the onion soup and it was amazing. For the main course we got the salmon pizza and jumbalaya. Both were very good. The service was good. The location was fun. We'd definitely go back and would recommend it for out of town visitors or locals. I can see why the reviews are so good!"

  • "Food pleases, wait staff polite (never stuffy, clingy, dramatic), service smooth, ambience makes for relaxed conversation."

  • "While French restaurants are not a natural choice for those of us who are gluten free, they have some great options. Good ambiance, with sweet music played at a moderate level which is very much appreciated for conversation. Fresh food."

  • "When I lived in the Milwaukee area seven years ago, this was one of my favorite places. However, my visit this last week (on a Tuesday night) just lacked something. In part, this may reflect that the restaurant was quiet, and hence there was little buzz or excitement such as one might hope for in a bistro. The second was that the service, while completely correct, lacked any warmth or empathy. In all, while the food itself was wonderful (probably still the best French onion soup around), the whole experience felt perfunctory."

  • "I have a really hard time picking because too many things sound good. I have been a regular at Coquette for years. They have the best trout in the city -- brown butter, tiny croutons, capers, radishes and arugula -- YUM! The hanger steak and pomme frites are to die for. The beet salad with arugula and feta had plenty of beets. There is always something interesting and new on their speciality menu. I had the beer cheese soup, and it wasn't the gummy, thick cheese-dip kind you get elsewhere. This was thinner, peppery and delicious, with the sharp taste of cheddar really tasteable. One of my companions had the jambalaya, with shrimp, blackened catfish, dirty rice, and a few other ingredients I can't remember, and it was very tasty too."

  • "This is a nice restaurant that I usually enjoy. I had the pork loin for dinner which was dry and disappointing; I'd had it in the past and enjoyed it much more. One of my colleagues had the salmon, which I tasted and was nicely done. Another had the ravioli and found it tasty but rich. They were offering a jambalaya special but no corn bread! Who can have a southern dish without corn bread? They DO have Lakefront Rendezous on tap, which is a very nice beer and hard to get, so that's a bonus. We didn't have dessert so can't speak to that. I generally like this restaurant and would go back but might be more curious about what I should order."

  • "this is great for a dinner where you really want to get to know someone. Its an intimate setting and very romantic. Great for anniversary or meeting with family. I was at a round table of 6 people and it was easy to talk across the table. VERY EXPENSIVE but when you are there you feel like it is justified. wine is good too. they ask you taste the wine too and do the formal small amount in the glass. if I have a special occassion coming up again I will definitely go here."

  • "Our three children regularly pick Coquette's for their Straight A reward dinner. Our children were raised to handle nice restaurants and sophisticated food. Any other child I have seen there has been very well behaved. Romantic diners don't seem to be disturbed, after 6:00pm. We often choose the Travel Menu and the Mussels."

  • "I was very impressed with Coquette. The atmosphere is lovely. It is cozy and comfortable. Our server, Amy, provided some of the best service I have ever experienced. The food was wonderful. I had the salmon and it was very good. My husband loved his meal as well. Desserts are very good! Will definitely be returning."

  • "3 of 4 of our party were having a birthday in the days on or around the event - plus a wedding anniversary. the staff picked up on it without any real prompt from us and made the evening very special for us all - at little cost to the cafe. It was a true surprise and meant a lot - in spite of the fact we were not looking for such special consideration... Thank you!"

  • "Great dinner. Casual atmosphere. Wife had jambalaya and I had the special rib entree. Portions were great. Had appetizer, drinks, and dessert and the prices weren't bad."

  • "Coquette Cafe is great for a romantic dinner, dinner with visiting family, and anyone who loves good food. While its by no means Applebee's prices, the French Onion Soup is incredible. Hanger steak is a very rich but delicious treat. For dessert, Eufs a la Nege (Snow eggs) and the pistacio tart will make anyone smile. Extensive wine list and good beer is also a plus. Top 5 best restaurants I have been to in the Milwaukee area"

  • "My husband and I went out to eat at Coquette for a late Valentine's dinner and it turned out to be a great experience. We had the mussels and frites which I thought the mussels were the best I had in Milwaukee. We also had the Opera cake with espresso anglaise which was to die for!! A must to go check out and enjoy with a loved one! Or even just a girls night out~"

  • "Coquette Cafe never disappoints - nice cozy ambience, attentive staff and incredible food! Our party had the Coq au Vin and the Steak with Frites, french onion soup and really good roasted red pepper soup. Great desserts, too! Really nice on a cold winter evening and out the door to enjoy the theatre - another great experience here."

  • "A birthday dinner with friends from out of town. Coquette's was busy that Saturday night, but upon arrival at our reservation time, we were shown right to our table! It was fantastic! Service was good and food was great. A very enjoyable evening and we will be back! Thanks!"

  • "The food was good, but I wasn't wowed by any of our selections. We had the cheese plate, French onion soup, ravioli with butternut squash, steak frite, brussel sprouts with bacon, and chocolate flourless cake. The cheese plate, chocolate cake, brussel sprouts and Chambord champagne cocktail were my favorites."
