A word from Coqueta
Brought to you by Award Winning Chef Michael Chiarello and located at Pier 5 on the the bustling San Francisco Waterfront, Coqueta is inspired by the cuisines of Spain. Chef Chiarello feels that Spain"s signature ‘small plates’ coupled with the social vibrancy of their dining scene is the perfect combination for San Francisco, which has its own deep-rooted history with the country. Focusing on regional dishes from Madrid, Catalonia, the Basque Country and beyond, the menu will feature Chiarello's interpretation of traditional Spanish cuisine and, as has always been his tradition, will highlight the bounty of fresh, local ingredients from land and sea.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "This is not line one of the over-priced restaurants overlooking San Francisco Bay that cater to tourists. It is over-priced, but the food was both unique and divine. The bar has filtered views of the bay, the restaurant has limited views, but the look and feel of the place makes you feel you are having a very special night out."

  • "I had heard from a few people that the food was wonderful but we were very dissappointed. The quail egg hors d'oevre was dull. No flavor at all. The egg and chorizo dish was so salty we didn't eat it. The paella tasted like a rice casserole from a previous era. No taste of saffron. Our server was excellent and I will return for the incredible grapefruit gin and tonic."

  • "This is a very special place with terrific food. Very tasty and original Spanish tapas. Too bad that this time the service was truly subpar for such an outstanding restaurant."

  • "So happy to have another foodie lunch spot to take my clients on the Embarcadero! Love the ambiance, industrial design of this place, & the cocktails and food are delicious!!! The wait staff unfortunately is not very attentive and a bit forgetful (except the bartender who was super nice, helpful) Hate to keep craning my neck, looking for someone when I need something... and for the prices, that definitely needs to improve. Also, when they give you a call to remind you of your ressie the previous day, it's an unknown #, so no way to return the call (??) and their main line throws you to their sister restaurant's voice mail. Ugh- Annoying. Overall, great place- just some minor glitches to fix. :)"

  • "Excellent food with perfect portions and delightful presentation. The ambience is relaxing and inviting , and though a small space, it feels more intimate than cramped. I don't know about the rest of the cocktail menu, but I'm assuming it's spectacular as I had what was clearly the best Manhattan I've had in my entire life! I wanted to also mention that the wait staff were amazing! Taking time to very thoroughly answer all our questions about the menu without feeling like it was an imposition, They were friendly, efficient and extremely gracious. All in all a very pleasing balance of all the things you look for in a great dining experience . Thoroughly recommend!"

  • "Cocktails and wine were excellent. The duck and pork albondigas with tart cherry ketchup and crispy shallots might be the best small plate I've ever had. Our server was extremely helpful and able to make helpful recommendations. Save room for dessert."

  • "Arrived at 1:10 for a 1:15 reservation. Checked in. 20 mins later, we were still not seated. Sat waiting in the bar area for our non-existent table, waiting for drinks that never showed up. Waitstaff opened door to outside seating area and left it open creating a nice, freezing cold wind tunnel throughout the area where we were sitting (and yes, I had a jacket on - I live in SF and know how cold it can be in the summer). We finally just left. Living in San Francisco, we dine out a lot all over the City, and have never had an experience like this. We will never go back, and will never recommend this restaurant."

  • "This was a delicious lunch, from the skewers to the larger dishes, everything was interesting and beautiful. But the noise was intolerable. I don't think I will go again unless it is at an "off" hour."

  • "As a Michael chiarello fan I was expecting more. Most of the menu items were just okay. Ends up being real pricy if just doing tapas, depending on what you order. The smoked salmon was amazing. Rest of the tapas didn't strike me as anything extraordinary. Cool vibes and a fun experience for a fan."

  • "Great vibe and delicious food in a beautiful dining room on the water. The host, Antonio, was a gem who recommended dishes for us to order. Definitely will be back with a large group so we can try everything on the menu."

  • "Food was good but not as good as Bottega in Yountville (same owner). I would've preferred more meatless options."

  • "This is my new favorite restaurant in San Francisco! The food is so different and so amazingly good that I wanted to taste every single thing on the menu. The way the food is served - all small plates - is almost as fun as tasting it. Such unique and different preparations. Our favorite was the shrimp and egg dish...could have had 2 plates it was so good. The waiters walk around with these trays of very small skewers that you select from - sort of a chef's offering - and it's not only fun but gives you an opportunity to try small bites of some unusual pairings. We couldn't get in for dinner so had lunch and it may have been better since we got very attentive service. Oh...try the sangria; you won't be disappointed!"

  • "I have been to Cocqueta three times now and every time I love it. Go-to dishes include the shrimp with black garlic, octopus, pork and duck meatballs, platter of cheeses and meats and many more! The service is always very good but not over bearing and its a friendly, fun atmosphere!"

  • "We had a lovely time. We were seated at our reservation time. Loved the types of gin & tonics. Interesting drink selections that went well with the food. My first-time guests from out of town loved it as well."

  • "The tapas style food was great so we were able to try several different items but the desserts were very disappointing."

  • "Our lunch lived up to all the hype! We sat at the chef's counter which provided a great view of the kitchen. Food was creative and delicious, and our waiter was efficient, personable and well-informed about the food."

  • "I expected more attention to detail. Complaints: salad dressing was way too vinegary, limited options if you don't eat pork Highlights: little brioche eggplant and cheese sandwich was delicious, octopus was cooked well"

  • "We have to quit ordering the paella! Every time we go to Coquetta we get it, and love it. Sitting at the counter is quite the show, watching all the exquisite little plates go by...and our paella being prepared...while drinking a bit of sangria."

  • "This was a return visit for Sunday brunch. We are really impressed with the impeccable service and attention to details. As expected the innovative tapas were amazingly delicious. Paella was done superbly with proper crispiness and ingredients. We enjoyed the creative cocktails and comprehensive wine list. We will definitely return!"

  • "Took a group of friends from out of town to share the experience of Coqueta. Definitely, the highlight of the trip! Tapas & pitchers of Sangria; I felt as if I throwing my own dinner party enjoying great food, drinks & company!!! Service and friendliness from staff from walking through the door, to dinner, dessert and leaving was outstanding. High energy, knowledgable and showed genuine interest in ensuring we had the best experience. Thank you Coqueta Team, look forward to seeing you soon!!!"

  • "Warm welcome by host; bartender helpful, fun & creative, bright & cozy ambiance in "outdoor like" bar. Piquant & lovely presentation of starter tastes & tapas & sauces to follow. The artistry & effort & love put into each dish makes the diner eagerly anticipate the next new "exploration" of what may follow. True professionals behind this adventure. Yea, "Napa Style goes Tapas Style!""

  • "Had a 2 p.m. reservation. Restaurant was probably 2/3 full. Everything took forever. Had three orders that came at a snails pace. Calamari..delicious. Shrimp tortilla a salty greasy dish. Seafood paella was OK..nothing special. We each had a different albarino and they were both quite nice. Took the better part of two hours. Water is served in a metallic cup..really!? Who had that great idea? I love metallic tasting water. Nothing special..fairly expensive. This place is well thought of so I might give it one more try."

  • "I have enjoyed two separate dining experiences at Coqueta over the last 5 weeks. the last one from July 10th that included one newly relocated So Cal refugee and an out of towner from La-La land...the best grilled octopus and paella they have EVER eaten...the out of towner was also impressed that he could enjoy a beer that was imported from Barcelona...I think we needs to get out more...but If he can get the Barcelona Beer here in SF more power to you guys!...Keep up the fabulous food and beverages. I will be returning soon!"

  • " The bartender was pleasant and knowledgeable. I helped to name his new Mescal concoction. When seated in the dining room, the service was flawless. The interior is awesome. Chiarello has an uncanny ability to set the stage perfectly for each of his restaurants. Our pintxos were excellent, especially the octopus and the calamari. The prawns were executed well, but paled in flavor and complexity to the octopus. The house cured olives have a fresh citrus quality giving them a lightness not common to most curings. The friendliness and warmth of the entire staff was refreshing. I look forward to returning with friends to share this new culinary gem."

  • "Took my mother here for her birthday and she said it was one of (if not the best) meal she'd ever had. We started with a selection of bit-sized skewers (the chorizo was my favorite, all were good) followed by the berry gazpacho (the best soup in the world), the kale salad with grilled strawberries (incredible), the gulf prawns (never had anything like these before - more like lobster than shrimp), the calamari (best ever), and the patatas bravas (I wanted to dip everything in that sauce!). I highly recommend this place, not only is the food outstanding, the service was impeccable, and they did an amazing job with the interior."

  • " Coqueta's restaurant is the spot to go for an extraordinary culinary experience in San Francisco. The food is innovative and every dish is presented with pizzazz. The flavors of the various foods we tried were spectacular! The non-alcoholic J & T Referesco is awesome; it has the sophistication of an alcoholic beverage, and most importantly, tastes amazing-it's refreshing-and is presented superbly The staff is incredibly astute. As an example, my husband got up from the table and the wait staff slyly folded his messy looking napkin. Searching hard for downfalls, the tables are too close together and it took me some time to get acclimated to the music which is on the loud side, but it's only because it was unexpected. Recommeded!"

  • "I had been wanting to go to this place since it opened and I had high expectations of Coqueta based on what I've read and heard but was disappointed when I got there. Place is really small but it didn't feel cozy and warm. It felt like the entire place was a bar. Maybe I just really love Bottega. The food was okay, nothing really extraordinary. Pricy though. I loved the Sangria! My husband asked for hot sauce...it took a while to give him a tablespoon of some chili then I was so surprised that we were charged $2.00 for a tablespoon of chili sauce...WTF? I've never ever been charged for chili sauce and they didn't say we would be charged for it. That was so ridiculous!!! Glad I got this out of my system! First and Last visit!"

  • "One of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. Paella is well worth the 40 minute wait--do it! Also love their sunny side up with chorizo sauce, patatas bravas and duck meatballs. Also only place in SF I've found kalimotxo. Fun!"

  • "We generally enjoyed our meal. However, those manchego skewers were waaaay too chunky! Manchego is such an intense flavor that less is more -- consistency matters, and manchego should be sliced thin. And we could barely taste the membrillo that supposedly existed between said chunks. But the quail egg bites were divine, as was the asparagus dish -- perfectly cooked and the favors were superb. I also thought that the pork/duck meatballs were great, but the sweet sauce brushed over them was superfluous, and almost masked the flavor of the meat. Wine was incredible, as was "cheesecake" dessert bite. Very creative!"

  • "Although I am a big fan of Chef Chiarello (Bottega is my favorite Italian restaurant), I hesitated going here because of a less-than-great eating experience in Barcelona. But I had read so many great reviews about Coqueta and finally the time was right because a dear friend was in town from Madrid. To put it mildly, we were 'blown away'! Saying that Coqueta is a great dining experience does not do it justice - it is an incredible aesthetic experience. It's like being served incredible food and wine in the elegant, vivacious home of a friend, with all your friends there - just a fun, revelatory culinary night that fills all your senses! Coqueta is now my favorite restaurant in San Francisco."

  • "A couple of friends joined us for lunch. Small plates of a variety of menu items were enjoyed. There were several unique dishes (e.g. sea urchin). Not too noisy. Service was slow, but reasonably paced."

  • "We took some serious foodies to dinner and we had raved in advance about the pulpo and the albóndigas. The albóndigas were delicious as usual, but we were disappointed that the pulpo was extremely chewy. We had had it before and it melted in your mouth. Our daughter recommended the espárragos which we had not tried before but, unfortunately, they were undercooked and we only got the green variety and none of the purple. The table was divided on the pintxos, but we all agreed that the churros were to die for! The service was knowledgeable and friendly. Our table was greatly situated in a corner with a view of the entire dinning room, but it was quite drafty and we wished we had brought a sweater!"

  • "Very disappointing! Some of the food was just plain bad. Lots of it was fried. Service was very spotty. We didn't see our wait staff nearly enough. Some of the plates were chipped. The wastebasket in the bathroom was overflowing and the windows were dirty."
