Diner Reviews
  • "Second time I have been to this restaurant. It is good but would not say great. Service was marginal. Tables seem too close together."

  • "This is a a few combined reviews ... Went to CWT before moving to the area and thoroughly enjoyed a group brunch. I have dietary restrictions, however, and the service staff didn't seem to know/understand the gluten concerns I had. He wasn't very attentive. We then moved to the area and had brunch again, although outside, and food was again, awesome, but service was just meh. Boyfriend is obsessed with the Scotched Eggs and I love that I can get an omelette with lox (they aren't off-the-chain salty, either!). When we do go now, we sit at the bar and see Kyle or another bartender. Food is always excellent, drinks are always strong; your homemade touch to each of the dishes, bar menu and beverages is well recognized! Thank y'all!"

  • "My daughter and I arrived for our 6:45 reservation, and the dining room was pretty empty. By 7:15 every table was filled. Our experience was perfect for a low key birthday celebration. Our specialty cocktails were delicious. The food was very good and the service was attentive and helpful. We both loved the pecan crusted trout, and shared perfectly prepared asparagus, mashed potatoes, and mac 'n cheese, which I had sampled before and insisted on including. (After enjoying an app and a salad as well, we were pretty full, and I happily took most of the mac 'n cheese home.)"

  • "I met friends from Vermont who prefer home-grown vegetables and local meats, and they were as pleased with Copperwood's menu as I was. The trout is outstanding (I've had it several times now), as were the filet mignon and the salads. My favorite is the brussel sprouts - I still need to determine where the slight sweetness comes from (honey?). Our waiter was super nice and engaging - attentive, but not overbearing. It was like hosting good friends at home yet even better since I didn't cook or clean."

  • "I love wines from New Zealand... Their selection of sauvignon blank is not enough... :("

  • "had a very good dining experience. The food was good, service was good, and ambiance was good. I liked their cocktail menu, my only criticism is the dinner menu could be expanded."

  • "This was my second visit to Copperwood Tavern, and both times I've been very pleased with the food and the service. Starters are large enough to be able to serve as main courses; I still haven't ordered an entree there. The short ribs are one of the best dishes I've ever had, anywhere. The tavern salad with steak was good but nothing memorable, though as other commenters have noted, if you order "medium rare," what you get is rare — blue and cool on the inside. I'm fine with that, but if you're not, order "medium" instead."

  • "Came as a couple with a dog. Had a great brunch (hearty portions, good prices.) Enjoyed the attentive service (even the floor manager passed through to check in on tables and provide additional service.) Water was plentiful (great to not be forgotten on a hot morning.) We will definitely be back."

  • "Free corn bread was moist and the grated lemon rind in the spread added a special subtle flavor. The steak on the salad was a perfect and tasty medium rare, a rare achievement in many restaurants around here. Also the salad was crunchy and good."

  • "That was the conclusion my husband and I came to after a recent dinner at Copperwood. Our appetizers and side dishes ranged from good to very good, but our entrees were just okay. He had the mussels and I had the gazpacho soup - he really liked the mussels. For entrees, he had the duck breast and I had one of their steak entrees -- both were mediocre. Too much reliance on sauces to flavor the meat, in my opinion. We had a side dish of fingerling potatoes that was fantastic -- I would go back for a large bowl of that. The grilled asparagus was fine, but nothing spectacular. We had 2 of their speciality drinks, again - just okay, nothing that I would go back specifically for."

  • "The food was delicious and full of flavor. I had to the blue crab Benedict and the crab was very fresh with hardly any filling. My friend's daughter had the French toast sticks and that was the quietest I have ever seen that little girl. I also like the popcorn that they give at every table. Will definitely be going back!"

  • "Took my mother-in-law here for brunch on Saturday. She loved the decor, as well as I did. I wanted to get a breakfast sandwich but I can't eat cheddar--that was the only cheese option for the sandwich, according to the waiter. He was not polite as I asked him if there was any other cheese. You can't eat a breakfast sandwich without cheese, so I opted for the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were delicious and seemed perfect under all of that bland sausage gravy sprinkled with cilantro. The potatoes that came with it weren't mentioned in the menu, but were flavored well. The entire time of our service, the waiter was rude and short with us. He appeared to be hungover, and acted very unpleasantly toward us."

  • "I have been there before and the food is consistently good. Out server was nice but he took a long time to get to us in the beginning so we waited longer than expected to put our order in. Other than that it was a good experience."

  • "We love this place. The food and service are great. I particularly like the Cajun Benedict. Service is friendly and prompt. It is a bit noisy."

  • "Food was good. Service knowledgeable and attentive. Management indifferent to our request for new table ( restaurant was not crowded at all) and did not check us in via Open Table. With so many good choices to dine out, will not be back soon. All in all not favorable experience."

  • "We've been to Copperwood a few times now and the food is absolutely amazing. However, this last time I brought my family from out of town. I told the waiter to take his time with apps and entrees, and instead, he rushed everything. All the appetizers came out at once (i.e. ones to share and individual soups/salads) and he brought entrees out before I even had a chance to finish my soup. Again, great food, ambiance, and location, but I was very disappointed by the service, especially since I asked for him to stagger the apps and take his time."

  • "First time eating there -- busy Friday night. Service was prompt. Decent beer selection. Everyone enjoyed their meals -- will return soon!"

  • "What more could you want? We made our reservation for a busy Thursday night when shirlington had a concert going on. When we arrived our table was ready and we were seated immediately. We couldn't decide on what to order as everything sounded good. The pork chop is outstanding rubbed in chili cocoa with a rhubarb chutney. Thee are small plates and shareable sides. The Brussel spouts are great fried with bacon. The bill arrived when we were done, no having to hunt to find someone to get the bill from. Overall an outstanding place."

  • "Friends and I went for brunch after running a 5K. Everyone loved their meal. I had the duck hash and will get it the next time I go for brunch. They have a great beer list and I love the fact that they have a specialty bourbon list, too."

  • "We made reservations for Capitol City Brewing next door to Copperwood Tavern but while waiting we decided to check out Copperwood's menu. We decided to try something new and we're happy we did. Copperwood Tavern was delicious!"

  • "Our reservation was for 5:15 on Father's Day. Surprisingly, there were hardly any other customers. So, we were very confused as to why it took nearly 10 minutes to get seated. Once seated, it took nearly 15 more minutes to get a waiter to acknowledge us. There is no kids menu and NOTHING on the menu appears to be kid-friendly. However, the food was delicious and our 5 & 9 year-olds enjoyed it. With that said, I can name 10 other places with the same quality food and much superior service."

  • " I've been to Copperwood on multliple occasions and its always been great, very busy, and bustling. On Sunday I took my 79-year old parents there, requested a quiet table --through reservation on Open Table--and got a booth in the back. Perfect. Lovely service except that waitress forgot one wine. Steak was definitely too rare, but we didn't send back because that would have interrupted others enjoying their meals. All in all, great."

  • "Copperwood Tavern has lots of competition in the restaurant corridor of Arlington's Shirlington neighborhood. But judging by our visit, it can certainly hold its own there. The food was quite good, although the menu was a bit limited. A few "standards" would've been welcomed. Nevertheless, we found the overall ambiance, service and food well worth the visit. And we're most likely to return soon."

  • "Three is a charm. I tried this venue in three different scenarios and hours. I like the spin to the menu that differentiates Copperwood Tavern from the same old same old offerings around."

  • "Great variety of breakfast and lunch items. Quality food, service, and atmosphere. I will come back again and again."

  • "Food was good, but a bit more expensive than it should have been for the quality. Truffle mac & cheese had very little truffle and overpowering onion breadcrumb topping. Filet mignon ordered medium rare was very rare. Oysters were delicious but many had not had the foot cut. Though overall it was good, I probably wouldn't go back for dinner. I am however intrigued by the brunch menu and may be tempted."

  • "Our 2nd visit - this time we were joined by another couple. Overall, we rated the food 'good' this time because we noticed some consistency issues compared to our 1st. Pecan trout was good, but definitely not as amazing as the first time (less sauce and barely any pecans). Brussels sprouts were over-roasted and burnt w/ too much vinegar; don't recommend. However, the rest of our table's entrees were done well (swordfish, risotto, filet mignon). Some "must trys" are: the Commonwealth Mule cocktail, Tavern Salad, mushroom 'Bruschetta' and Stout Brownies w/ Nutella Ice Cream. Service was very good; helped us subtly wish our friend a happy birthday with a candle in her dessert. We'll be back for a 3rd try soon."

  • "Dining al fresco for 4. Very high marks on food quality. Only issues that kept it from being 5 star: venison chop, medium rare was too rare and required to be sent back to warm up; bison chop, medium rare was actually on the well done side of medium, but as it was tender and tasty it was not sent back for a do-over though they got partial credit for offering to do so when the temperature was pointed out. The quinoa stuffed peppers were excellent, as was the trout. Good craft brew list. Service was a tad on the slow side but I am optimistic since it was busy that they are just still working out a few kinks. Would return, and it got high marks from out of towners (mom and dad)."

  • "our made reservations in advance, and they were ready for us when we get there. the complimentary corn muffins were delicious. my friend got the trout and really liked it. i had the asparagus soup, and it was too bitter in taste. consistency was very watery as well. the lobster risotto was nice and creamy, but the peas in it were rock hard. the brussel sprouts were really flavorful, but almost too much seasoning, i was gagging on the ones at the bottom swimming in butter and salt and other spices. i don't think i would return, but the place was nicely decorated and had a good vige."

  • "The food is consistently delicious but 2 out of 3 dining experiences so far have been hindered by less than average wait staff and long waits for the food."

  • "I went here for the first time and was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was. The atmosphere is rustic but tasteful. We went for lunch and it was not crowded. The hostess was very attentive and friendly. I had the lobster/shrimp roll which was great. My friend had the lamb burger and it was more than enough. The prices are a bit high but I guess that is what you have to expect for a Farm to Table restaurant."

  • "Copperwood Tavern is new in Shirlington and is a welcome addition. I like their menu as it is a little different (venison for example). It isn't just straight our plain. This is my second time there and the first time I had Venison and the second I had the Bison Chop. Preferred the Bison chop, but both were good. They have a little bit different drink list too which I like (they have some shines). Liked the atmosphere, low key but not too low key. Service was good. I will go back."

  • "If you haven't tried Copperwood Tavern, it's time to take a trip to Shirlington Village. I recommend starting with a brunch and working your way up to a dinner, both of which are excellent. You won't be disappointed!"

  • "I love farm to table restaurants and I think it's hard to find in the NOVA area. I went for dinner and all the food was fresh and amazing. I'd love to try their brunch. And their specialty cocktails are delicious!. Definitely recommend this place especially if you like natural, local foods. Love the restaurant ambiance too. Had a rustice tavern feel!"

  • "Our group had drinks but waited more than 45 minutes to order appetizers. After that, not much was going to change my first impression. Yes it was a busy Friday night but attention was remarkably lacking."
