Diner Reviews
  • "I had the breakfast sandwich, and the biscuit was the best I've ever had... and I'm from the South!"

  • "The two of us focused our menu selections on appetizers or side dishes. Fried Brussels sprouts, Mac n cheese, asparagus,....all yummy. skip the grilled salad, not grilled enough.did add the trout but we were full so most of it came home.it was friend's birthday so they surprised us with delicious ice cream and brownie dessert. Wasn't exactly a "heart happy kind of place or meal but was delicious going down. We were happy"

  • "Bruschetta with balsamic reduction was fantastic. Fried brussel sprouts were pretty oily, trout filet very buttery. Roasted asparagus nondescript Local food, yay. High fat, boo. Good draft beer list."

  • "I was not impressed. First, there was the price vs. value. My companion order a duck breast a-la-carte at $26 requesting it be cooked medium well and it came out medium rare. He sent it back and it came back over cooked 15 minutes later. Why didn't they cook another duck breast? Secondly, serve was spotty. After asking for a glass of wine, it took 3 repeated requests to receive it. On the positive side, the caesar salad and gazpacho was very good. I might try it one more time. I do try to give a restaurant 3 opportunities, but there is a lot of competition for my food dollars in Arlington. This might not get a third try if the second visit doesn't improve."

  • "Wait staff services were terrific, especially wine recommendation from lengthy list. Interesting and tasty food choices, but some items only come in serving sizes enough for 2-3 persons. Great if others want to share but doesn't always work out that way. Both entrees (duck and swordfish) needed to go back for additional cooking -- but staff were did so with apology and returned dishes quickly from the kitchen."

  • "Looking for a decent place with options for a 14 year old we ran across Copperwood Tavern in nearby Shirlington. The restaurant was quite full but we were seated immediately. Although the menu didn't list any non-alcoholic beverages, the server quickly answered our questions and we got wonderful homemade raspberry lemonade and sparkling water. The appetizers and entrees were creative and flavorful. NOTE: no vegetables come on the plates so you have to order a side which adds another $8, so $31 Bison steak with asparagus becomes $39! We ordered desserts but this is not their forte. We will definitely go back but would skip dessert here and go elsewhere."

  • "This was my second visit and I must say that the service is BEYOND EXCELLENT! Unfortunately, I'm just not sold, yet, on the food. The menu reads well it just doesn't translate to the taste. I will continue to give them a trym"

  • "Copperwood Tavern is awesome. I love the decor and the thoughtfulnes that went into their menu. So glad to see more than one vegetarian option! Service was great. All the staff is friendly and professional. I will definitely be back."

  • "My husband was disappointed there was not a buffet, but the food more than made up for it. The Florentine Benedict eggs were outstanding."

  • "The food was amazing, as usual. The server seemed to be having an off day, but apologized profusely for her mistake and ensured we were completely satisfied with the remainder of our experience after she failed to input part of our order. She corrected the mistake, and the rest of our food came out promptly. We ordered the duck hash, cajun eggs Benedict, and beer buckwheat banana pancakes. All the food was amazing. This is one of our favorite restaurants!"

  • "We enjoyed brunch at Copperwood Tavern. We ordered the French Toast sticks as an appetizer and although the syrup/butter combo was great, the actually French Toast sticks were undercooked. I enjoy soggy french toast but these were just a little too undercooked. For entrees we order the Tavern Platter, which came with three eggs, choice of meat (i went with bacon), potato hash and a biscuit. My entire entree was very good. The biscuit with the strawberry jam was fabulous! And I even enjoyed the potato hash. My boyfriend went with the short rib benedict. His entree was delicious as well. Will be coming back to enjoy some of their other entrees!"

  • "I have been here a few times and the food is always good. The service was fine, one of the orders was messed up in the sense that what was ordered was a breakfast sandwich on a croissant and what arrived was a breakfast sandwich on an english muffin. It wasn't something to have corrected and the breakfast was still very yummy. Other than that it was a good place to have a nice sunday brunch and the decor in the restaraunt is always appealing and they were great about coming around and refilling the coffee and water at our table which is always appreciated. Overall it was a good dining experience and some place that I will go back to for brunch or to the bar which has a good selection of small plates and meals."

  • "Always outstanding service; management comes by to greet every table and determine level of satisfaction; food exceptional. Great for diners with allergies. Smith Farms' grass-fed, humane-raised meats, wonderful and super-equipped bar, salads are outstanding, all food portions more than plentiful. Copperwood has become among our top three restaurant picks in the Washington area, and the least expensive of the three."

  • "Really interesting food choices---all wonderfully prepared. Our server, Sharifa, was extremely warm & welcoming and provided exceptional advice on the many food & drink choices we faced. She made our evening quite enjoyable! We will be back again to explore the remainder of the wonderful menu and will ask for Sharifa again!"

  • "I had read about the trout fillet and it did not disappoint! It literally melted in my mouth and not one teeny weeny bone. We started off with the bison meat balls as a small appetizer- fantastic flavor! My daughter had the pork chop, thick, juicy, almost fork-cut-able! Our shared sides were the brussel sprouts (flavour was great although I might have preferred a little healthier option than fried) and the we-didn't-leave-a-grain risotto. Yummy! The service was great- very nice and solicitous waitress. My husband really enjoyed the pale ale selection. By 7pm, the place was full, so reservations help! We will definitely go back!"

  • "Brought visitor from the Midwest, is not an adventuresome eater , ordered small plates to share. Started with mushroom, goat cheese bruschetta ( personal fav). He ordered the short ribs and five cheese macaroni; me, the beef tartar and mussels. All well prepared and efficiently served. finished with the rhubarb creme caramel. Dining partner tried the tartar and thought it tasty - tried two mussels and finished the last three mussels! personal preference - mac & cheese loose the Gouda, add add pepper, mussels were sweet and strong citrus flavor, prefer garlic, creme carmel had crystals of sugar that had formed in the flan . The 4 Rose Bourbon (2) what wonderful- love the square very cold ice cube that did not seem to melt very fast."

  • "A little bit of a let-down from my past visits. Brussels sprouts were saturated with oil and super salty. Scallops and foie gras was rick but bland, anemic overall. Truffle mac tasted like it was out of a box. My companions had the trout, which did look good. Oysters were small; grilled were better than raw."

  • "When you enter the vibe is very cheerful and upbeat. The décor screams barn fresh food and that's what you get! Went there for brunch on a Sunday and it was bustling but not difficult to get a table. This restaurant is also very dog friendly so we saw a number of dogs enjoying the afternoon there as well. Food is delicious. Everything we ordered was good and the portions are large. Prices are reasonable. We'd definitely return."

  • "Everyone in our party of 4 agreed we need to come back here! This place gets just about everything right. They offered fresh seasoned popcorn at the bar that got our taste-buds primed. The gazpacho and short ribs appetizers were delicious. The entrees were also great, especially the pork chop and steak filet. We shared a mashed potatoes with gouda side and mushroom side which were both excellent. The risotto was good. We sampled 2 of the desserts, balsamic strawberry shortcake and a stout brownie with Nutella Ice Cream which were pretty good. I was glad we ordered some extra ice cream. The drink list includes flavored moonshine. Yum! We had a great waiter named Damo. He was fun and attentive with a good understanding of the menu."

  • "Our first visit to this restaurant. Dinner was delicious and sides were quite different and enjoyable. We liked that the sides were big enough for two. Service was attentive and friendly. Great weather for outside dining (can't comment on the noise level inside). Shirlington is pet friendly, and it was fun to see the dogs being walked (all dogs were well behaved and not directly in the eating area). This restaurant is a great addition to the variety of eating place at Shirlington."

  • "The food is amazing here but the hostess was terrible. We had a baby carrier/stroller and were sat in the middle of the tight dining area. When asked if we could take one of the corner tables or a booth, the waitress snarled at us and said they had a lot of reservations. It was a slow Thursday night and the restaurant was far from busy. It was such an unnecessarily rude response, it really put us off. There was no reason she couldn't accommodate us. We make a point not to take baby during peak times at busy restaurants, so I do understand it can be challenging, but this was certainly not the case."

  • "My daughter and I arrived for our 6:45 reservation, and the dining room was pretty empty. By 7:15 every table was filled. Our experience was perfect for a low key birthday celebration. Our specialty cocktails were delicious. The food was very good and the service was attentive and helpful. We both loved the pecan crusted trout, and shared perfectly prepared asparagus, mashed potatoes, and mac 'n cheese, which I had sampled before and insisted on including. (After enjoying an app and a salad as well, we were pretty full, and I happily took most of the mac 'n cheese home.)"

  • "I met friends from Vermont who prefer home-grown vegetables and local meats, and they were as pleased with Copperwood's menu as I was. The trout is outstanding (I've had it several times now), as were the filet mignon and the salads. My favorite is the brussel sprouts - I still need to determine where the slight sweetness comes from (honey?). Our waiter was super nice and engaging - attentive, but not overbearing. It was like hosting good friends at home yet even better since I didn't cook or clean."

  • "This was my second visit to Copperwood Tavern, and both times I've been very pleased with the food and the service. Starters are large enough to be able to serve as main courses; I still haven't ordered an entree there. The short ribs are one of the best dishes I've ever had, anywhere. The tavern salad with steak was good but nothing memorable, though as other commenters have noted, if you order "medium rare," what you get is rare — blue and cool on the inside. I'm fine with that, but if you're not, order "medium" instead."

  • "Came as a couple with a dog. Had a great brunch (hearty portions, good prices.) Enjoyed the attentive service (even the floor manager passed through to check in on tables and provide additional service.) Water was plentiful (great to not be forgotten on a hot morning.) We will definitely be back."

  • "The food was delicious and full of flavor. I had to the blue crab Benedict and the crab was very fresh with hardly any filling. My friend's daughter had the French toast sticks and that was the quietest I have ever seen that little girl. I also like the popcorn that they give at every table. Will definitely be going back!"

  • "I have been there before and the food is consistently good. Out server was nice but he took a long time to get to us in the beginning so we waited longer than expected to put our order in. Other than that it was a good experience."

  • "Took my mother-in-law here for brunch on Saturday. She loved the decor, as well as I did. I wanted to get a breakfast sandwich but I can't eat cheddar--that was the only cheese option for the sandwich, according to the waiter. He was not polite as I asked him if there was any other cheese. You can't eat a breakfast sandwich without cheese, so I opted for the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were delicious and seemed perfect under all of that bland sausage gravy sprinkled with cilantro. The potatoes that came with it weren't mentioned in the menu, but were flavored well. The entire time of our service, the waiter was rude and short with us. He appeared to be hungover, and acted very unpleasantly toward us."

  • "That was the conclusion my husband and I came to after a recent dinner at Copperwood. Our appetizers and side dishes ranged from good to very good, but our entrees were just okay. He had the mussels and I had the gazpacho soup - he really liked the mussels. For entrees, he had the duck breast and I had one of their steak entrees -- both were mediocre. Too much reliance on sauces to flavor the meat, in my opinion. We had a side dish of fingerling potatoes that was fantastic -- I would go back for a large bowl of that. The grilled asparagus was fine, but nothing spectacular. We had 2 of their speciality drinks, again - just okay, nothing that I would go back specifically for."

  • "Free corn bread was moist and the grated lemon rind in the spread added a special subtle flavor. The steak on the salad was a perfect and tasty medium rare, a rare achievement in many restaurants around here. Also the salad was crunchy and good."

  • "Food was good. Service knowledgeable and attentive. Management indifferent to our request for new table ( restaurant was not crowded at all) and did not check us in via Open Table. With so many good choices to dine out, will not be back soon. All in all not favorable experience."
