Diner Reviews
  • "I have only been here for lunch ,so it was quiet enough to really enjoy the food and the conversations. Wait staff was very attentiveAll three of us enjoyed our different salad and sandwich entrees."

  • "I was very pleasantly surprised by my copperwood tavern brunch experience. Stepping inside is like taking a journey back home to the West. The restaurant is MASSIVE by DC standards with high, vaulted ceilings and a "log cabin"-ish feel but it still manages to feel cozy. Our waiter, can't remember his name, was one of the kindest servers I've ever experienced in my 6 years in DC. He made great recommendations for drinks from their brunch bloody's to their bourbon-based cocktails. We were all extremely satisfied. The food is standard brunch fare, executed very well with larger portions. Looking forward to going back for happy hour and dinner!"

  • "This is one of the best meals me & my group have had in a while. We really enjoyed the selection of Moonshine & Bourbon also. We will be making reservations soon to check out the lunch menu."

  • "Took a co-worker for her birthday lunch. It was her first time at the restaurant. She loved it! She had the BALT and I had the Cuban. I lot of food. Would recommend getting the salad instead of fries with the sandwiches."

  • "Every bite was amazing. Best fried oysters and bone marrow I've ever had. Can't say enough. Bartender was great too, seemed to really love his job, took great care of us. It was my birthday, and loved sitting at the bar for dinner."

  • "The servers at Copperwood leads us 3 diners not to come back to what is an otherwise delicious restaurant. The food was undeniably some of the best farm-table we've had. Too bad it won't be on our "go back to" list with so many others to try."

  • "My parents are picky eaters so I was a little nervous that the menu would overwhelm them. We had a wonderful evening. The food was excellent - my parents LOVED it and they have already mentioned going back the next time they are in town. Our server - Art was FANTASTIC. He made recommendations that we all loved, was very attentive, and made sure we had a great evening."

  • "Both my dining companion and I had two small plates each, the short ribs and the mussels. Both were fabulous!"

  • "The brunch here is amazing, rivaled only by the small plates on the dinner menu. Get the Gouda Grits and Duck Hash at brunch, or go with a more traditional Benedict. You won't be disappointed no matter what you choose! I'm also a bit of a Bloody Mary snob, and their selection of breakfast drinks really hits the spot. If you're feeling adventurous, go for the blackberry moonshine with a splash of club soda (they add the fresh berries on top)."

  • "Great neighborhood farm to table venue with unique flair."

  • "First the good. The burgers and the appetizers in this place are absolutely fabulous! We particularly like the grilled oysters and the mushroom bruschetta. The latter being one of my favorite dishes in any restaurant. You must definitely try it. No complaints about the service. Now the bad. There are two different menus. If you are in the bar you get both; but if you are in the dining area you only get one. And sadly the one you get does not include their burgers! And that's where the UGLY comes... It is strictly forbidden to order a burger from the dining area! Waiters have in the past gotten in trouble for this. And I am sorry to say, I like this place but this is a deal breaker for me. Specially since the bar does not take reservations!"

  • "We had Signature theater that night and sought a restaurant nearby. The Copperwood Tavern is just down the street and has a nicely varied menu. Since two of us like to combine (and share) small plates, the menu worked well. Some food - the oven roasted oysters, the pate and the short ribs were very good. The mussels were over flavored with bacon and blue cheese too strong to hold up to the delicate flavor of the seafood. The steak on the caesar had no flavor and was more than chewy. The trout was too heavily covered with seasoning, again, overwhelming the normal mild flavor of the fish. Good drinks, fine wine, very good service."

  • "The brown butter ale chicken is AMAZING!! I don't normally order chicken over. Filet or meat options, but I highly recommend this entrée! Only negative of the evening was waiting 35 minutes for our table we had reserved."

  • "Its a steak house!. Everything is a la carte. Same prices too as the normal "steak house.". Just don't get the same ambience. This is a "tavern," so casual. So this is a "special" place to eat designed for everyday eating, if you can afford it. I would recommend this place if the prices were everyday prices. But if I'm spending this kind of money, I expect more upscale ambience, and better food."

  • "Everything was great from the feel of the place to the quality of the food. Only critique couldn't order simpler food from bar menu in dinning room."

  • "The restaurant setting is very good as well as the atmosphere. Our waiter was very tentative and professional. It is a very nice place for a group gathering. The only drawback on the food is too salty. I thought it was me, but another guest also feels the same way. The portion is generous in the main course, however, I thought the scallops under the starter menu was less than I thought based on the pricing."

  • "Other than having to wait 20 minutes to get seated, even though we had a reservation, we had a nice time here. The food's not anything spectacular but it's a fun place with great décor. We went for Sunday brunch so may need to try for dinner too."

  • "Went with friends for my husband's birthday, and we were not disappointed. Everything we had was delish except for the stout brownie, which was dry and sad. But everything else was so great we didn't let that bring us down!"

  • "We had reservations for six and the table was ready for us when we arrived. The drink list was great, and they even had a long list of microbrew bourbons (like every Southern inspired restaurant should)! Cornbread and popcorn for the table were a nice touch. The service was quick and attentive. I ordered the Tavern Salad, butternut squash soup and the Truffled Mac and Smoked Gouda mashed potatoes. The food was delicious. I would recommend each of those dishes, especially the Truffled Mac. My only complaint is that there are not enough vegetarian options. I understand this is a Southern farm to table restaurant, however, as a vegetarian, I appreciate more options for an entree than salad. Otherwise, this restaurant is fantastic!"

  • "even though no one was there the service for a basic hamburger and salad took over 30 minutes. The salad was supposed to have a mix of greens but only had romaine and goog portion of that was old and brown/black. Yuck!"

  • "My husband and I were pleased with every dish we ordered. He favored the bison meatballs and my favorite were the scallops (small plates). We also tried the short ribs, truffled mac, pumpkin brûlée(pumpkin was not the dominant flavor), and homemade ice cream (butter pecan was the best). Service was outstanding! Tables are close together, get a booth if you can."

  • "Copperwood has a unique menu, alongside the regular steaks you can get bison, lamb, venison as well as a selection of fish, all locally-sourced. Filet Mignon was perfectly cooked, creamed spinach was enough for two. Would prefer if you got a traditional entree, with a meat and side together, rather than having to order those a la carte, and sides comes in portions for two so you have to negotiate with your dining partners. Great drink menu, with a huge selection of bourbons, moonshine and creative cocktails."

  • "Venison - perfect !!! Filet - cooked exactly to instruction and melt in your mouth tender. Small mishap with the Lamb steak, but the manager immediately swung into action and corrected the error! The Frisse Salad with Duck confit is always a favorite !!! Would recommend to anyone !!! The sides were all good and plenty large enough to share! Noise level was low and we carried a full conversation throughout dinner .... Ambience, decor and setting is what one would expect - comfortable without being overdone In previous visits to the restaurant, we have sat in the bar and it was equally enjoyable !"

  • "Our meal was very good. Maybe a little too much oil and heaviness for my system. Mussels were excellent along with the corn bread. The bread pudding was good, but could have used a little more topping to make it moister. Was not able to get one scoop of ice cream with it, only three so we opted for none. Not sure why we were not allowed to pay for one. They have decent wine selection. Service was excellent. Seating was less then desirable, tables too close together. Overall, we most likely will return and hope for a table for two along the wall."

  • "Our 1st time dining here & we had a very good experience. Server started off w/ a great overall explanation of their concept (seasonal, farm-to-table) & an menu overview. My meal was delicious: oysters - clean, fresh (shucking could be improved); Tavern salad was well portioned and dressed; & the trout filet (which came recommended by our server) was perfectly cooked and flavors well balanced. 2 critiques: 1) Entrees arrived too quickly--we were not finished w/ starters when meals arrived--we observed this happening to other tables--I really hate being rushed. 2) Our server, while good, did go missing for a bit and repeated requests to food runners for a steak knife resulted in my husband having to get up and find one. But we'll be back!"

  • "The strength of this place is the food. It is absolutely the highest quality food, served to the highest standards. The atmosphere is a rustic farm or barn theme which is outstanding, given that all the food served comes from local farms and cooked from scratch in their kitchen. However. The seating is very open and close together, it isn't very private or quiet. I prefer not to dine so close to the people next to me, so I downgraded "ambiance" and "noise," You probably can't get in without a reservation, and keep in mind the menu is different depending on the time of day or day of the week. This has to do with with the Chef's required prep time, who is apparently quite picky about quality...if it ain't perfect, it won't leave the kitchen."

  • "We went to brunch on Saturday. The restaurant has a strange layout where there's a sideboard with water and glasses where the servers have to walk through the diners to reach it. I was clipped in the shoulder by a busboy who didn't apologize and just kept moving. And given some dirty looks by other servers. My chair was as far tucked under the table as it would go and we didn't request that particular table, we were seatedthere by the hostess. I asked our waitress if she could ask everyone to take another route besides behind my chair. She tried but it didn't make any difference."

  • "Our first visit we sat in the bar area, had wine and small bites which were great! For our second visit we had dinner and were expecting great things since our initial visit was so wonderful. WRONG. Steaks were tough, butternut squash soup was lacking -- needed more nutmeg or something. Dessert selection was poor. For a restaurant with such a large selection of bourbon, I thought for sure they'd have bourbon chocolate pecan pic....nope. They had some other version with caramel, not very tasty. We probably will be back for drinks in the bar, but will skip dinner -- pricy and not appealing."

  • "We went here before seeing a play. I was warmly greeted and the hostess stayed to chat, as my friend had not yet arrived. The wine menu was reasonable and my friend enjoyed the extensive bourbon selections. My pork chop was very good, although a little on the fatty side- my friend's filet mignon was cooked perfectly. We shared garlic French fries (excellent) and had an appetizer of mushroom and goat cheese bruschetta. I thought that for the relatively informal atmosphere that the prices were a little steep, particularly since they didn't include any sides. The fries we ordered were a large serving which would have been too much for one. I will definitely give this another try and found it a nice addition to the Shirlington area."

  • "I dined here in early March but some of the menu items seemed better suited to fall such as butternut squash soup and pumpkin creme brulee. In addition the menu is weighted in favor of meat and several of the entrees are priced at over $30 which seems high considering the casual atmosphere of the dining room. While my pecan crusted trout filet was perfectly fine it came with no accompaniment whatsoever - not even a lemon slice - and I was obliged to select a side dish which range in cost from $6 to $10. And if you tell your server this is your first visit be prepared to sit through a rambling oration about what farm to table is all about - an ordeal at best considering the lively sounds coming from the nearby bar."

  • "We were eating light before going to the theater so we had no main courses, but thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The frisee salad with duck confit is excellent (and plenty to split); the rabbit pot pie had a great crust, a tasty filling, and was also generously portioned; and the shortrib first course was excellent. Good wine list and attentive servers round out the picture."

  • "My friend and I took my 10 year old daughter to brunch at Copperwood before we headed downtown for a Sunday 12:30 Caps game. Reservations were easy to do on OpenTable, and our table was waiting for us when we arrived. I liked that Copperwood is open at 10 on Sunday, as a lot of places don't open until 11. Our server was very nice and brought us coffee right away. Coffee was good too, which was a good sign. This is a "farm to table" restaurant and all of the ingredients are sourced locally and are organic, no hormone, free range, etc. Everything is made from scratch, and very delicious. We had bananas foster french toast, blueberry ricotta pancakes, and banana beer buckwheat pancakes, grits and bacon. All were terrific and we made the game!"

  • "Brunch selection is not limited to the usual cast of characters (duck hash--fantastic!). Food quality is very good and the portions are a good size (not huge and intimidating, yet filling). Waiters were attentive and manager also came around to ask about our dining experience. Prices are also very reasonable. Will definitely go back to try the lunch and/or dinner menu."

  • "First time dining at Copperwood Tavern and we were a little let down. Here's why: Lack of healthy menu options. Pecan crusted trout lacked seasoning without butter sauce. Roasted chicken excellent but overpriced Stout brownie dessert to bitter. No description of desserts on menu Bench seating to tall causing me to sit on the edge of seat to reach the table for entirety of the meal. Good points: Our waiter was excellent and knowledgeable about the menu & able to answer all question. Very attentive. Food arrived in a timely manner"

  • "Copperwood Tavern aspires to fine dining, but they are not there yet. The arrival of food to your table is not timed correctly so everything, appetizers and main courses, will arrive together. The food preparation is heavy on bacon and cream and it's hard to make your way around the menu if you want to eat in a more healthy fashion. Perhaps they will improve."

  • "A friend and I had brunch at this beautifully decorated establishment just this past Saturday. Not only is the decor of this restaurant tastefully done but the food and the service all fell short of nothing but amazing. To start off we ordered the French toast sticks for our appetizer and for our main courses I had the Cajun eggs Benedict and my Fri had thr biscuits and gravy. This meal was one of the best brunches I have ever had. The cocktails also paired perfectly with the meal as well. I look forward to becoming a frequent visitor of this restaurant. I recommend anyone who has not tried the brunch should go! You also should make reservations it was very busy for a Saturday brunch! :)"

  • "Ate with friend on a Fri nite - had reservations. Food (bison chops, sauteed brussel sprouts) and drink (wine and draft beer) were terrific if pricey, service was great. It's a little noisy and cramped, especially in the bar where there's a different menu and no reservations. Bar would be a good place to try on a slower time. But overall a good if expensive addition to the Shirlington scene."

  • "My husband and I had a wonderful time at Cooperwood! The food was fresh and delicious! The menu was very unique and a fantastic change from the norm. We were blown away by the decor - simply awesome, and the service was top notch! We live in DC and would certainly venture back for another delicious meal.. I wish there was one in my neighborhood- jealous!"
