Diner Reviews
  • "I had the Hash. I never pass up hash of any kind. The seasoning was well-chosen by the chef and the dish as a whole was filled with flavor. My dining companion had Eggs Benedict and she said the dish was very well prepared. For dessert, I chose the Bread Pudding. It was drizzled with just the right amount of delicious sauce and it stayed nicely hot during the entire time that I was eating it. My companion chose the crème brulee and she said it had been chilled, whereas all of the other crème brulees she eaten at other establishments had been served warm. So, guess that dish did not pass muster."

  • "Delicious salads, soup and decadent flourless chocolate cake for dessert...does it get any better?"

  • "We have enjoyed Convito, in all of it's illiterations, over the past 20+ years. Every dish we have tried has always been delicious, comforting and creative with a lovely presentation. We return several times a month, frequently meeting for lunch, and thoroughly enjoy every experience. The deli is a wonderful place for my husband to stop on his way home, and pick up a wonderful dinner. I've also had them create lovely gift baskets of both packaged and prepared foods."

  • "Did a business lunch there. the clientele at lunch is pretty much "ladies doing lunch" which is in line with the Wilmette location and certainly OK. What is lacking is attentive service. The servers weren't objectionable, just absent. They are seemingly oblivious to routine table attention and follow up. The food was nice but I'd avoid it going forward."

  • "Well rounded Italian menu with shockingly good gravy (tomato basil pasta sauce). Whole grain pasta was a nice option and the grilled calamari was really tasty."

  • "Stopped in for lunch with a friend as it is located midway between our offices. Have been in for dinner once before and enjoyed that so gave lunch a try. Friend said his BLT sandwich was fine, I thought my Pork Milanese sandwich was more like a breaded pork chop, when I was expecting a thinner, pounded pork cutlet. Flavor was OK, but breading got soggy and the focaccia seemed not so fresh. Server was friendly and prompt."

  • "Nice and cheery place. Service was attentive. Salads were good -- but pretty expensive for the size and what you get. A mixed green salad with a LIGHT sprinkling of blue cheese -- NO MEAT/PROTEIN for $9.50???"

  • "Flat bread with smoked salmon and truffle oil was soggy and returned to the kitchen for a redo. A Bêtise salad was blah. Worst were the uncomfortable chairs, low and tipped back. We swapped for better ones. One good thing was the whole wheat pasta with butternut squash."

  • "Convito is an enduring favorite. On a crowded Valentine's eve, I forgave the opening rush our server put on us. We had onion soup, mussels, rack of lamb and skirt steak, all very nicely done with great style. But we did not get either butter or oil to go with our terrific bread until we asked, we were given tiny glasses for our red wine (replaced promptly when we asked) with a very generous pour, we were brought our check before being given an opportunity for either coffee or dessert (we had the fabulous chocolate), and the coffee refill was room temperature (seriously, not even tepid). Stuff happens, but not once did our waitress (very efficient and obviously quite experienced) offer an apology. My bill identifies her as Estefani."

  • "We always enjoy Convito. The staff is friendly and helpful. They have specials which make it even more interesting as they really offer some variety. They also include whole grain pasta and a gluten free menu and no matter what you order, it is perfectly prepared and delicious. I always find it worthwhile to abandon the no carbs and go for the pasta at Convito."

  • "We have dined at Convito for years and have never been disappointed. If anything the food is better than ever and the service is attentive without being pushy. I had the parmesan encrusted cod and it was so tasty yet delicate that it nearly melted in my mouth. My wife had the Tortellini (Tortellini Tuesdays) with meat sauce. The flavor was hearty without being too spicy. The only negative was the vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce (not on the menu, so I shouldn't complain) but the sauce was like a chocolate shell which my grandchildren might have loved but I didn't."

  • "Lots of wonderful choices.Ample portions. Nice presentation. Had to ask for refills on the iced tea and needed to ask for butter for the bread. Sitting by the window in this kind of weather wasn't the best choice. Fabulous dessert choices that are not to be missed."

  • "A little overpriced for what we got. My wife's dish was good. I ordered the spaghetti and meatballs and it was pretty bland. Service was good"

  • "I have been going to this restaurant for at least 6 years and have never had a problem with food or service. Tables can seem a little small and cramped, but not enough so that I would stop going here."

  • "Our party of four enjoyed pasta, fish and steak dinners bookended by a perfectly prepared bruschetta appetizer and wonderful bread pudding, creme brule and molten lava cake desserts. The flank steak and pomme frites was outstanding--smoky, high-heat grilled steak alongside a generous portion of thin cut frites that were perfectly crispy on the outside but just a bit soft on the inside. I'm getting hungry again just thinking about them. :-) Also wanted to note that the setting was excellent, too--pleasant and comfortable surroundings and a noise level that allowed conversation at normal tones. A gem."

  • "Convito is one of my favorites, so of course it came to mind when our friends from Washington, DC were in town. They were wow-ed from the bread to the coffee. Thanks!"

  • "Great neighborhood restaurant, especially for New Year's. They had a regular and a special menu, which was really appreciated."
    Dined on 12/31/2013
  • "The food seemed to have been prepared by the back-up chef. The onion soup was a little sweet and sour, instead of the deep broth one expects and the meatballs were pedestrian instead of the subtly flavored, delicately textured masterpieces we'd remembered from previous visits. But the most disappointing aspect was the service. They appeared to be understaffed, the waitress rushing to and fro just out of our reach at several transition points during the meal. The rushing itself proved counter productive; with a desperate quality that created a frenetic atmosphere in the room which degraded our dining experience even further. We'll probably be back -- we've enjoyed the restaurant in the past -- but not on the basis of this last experience."

  • "2 of our 4 diners were disappointed with their entree. Lobster poached in butter was largely pasta with a little bit of lobster. The other entree, lamb chops was requested prepared med-rare and was served well done and dry. On the other hand the hosts were polite. We were 1/2 hour late due to the snow. They couldn't have been more accomadating. Our server was terrific."

  • "Lovely setting, very attentive wait staff; overpriced and adequate meal. Protein portion for a $23 dinner should be ample not skimpy and overcooked."

  • "Great local place, with ourdoor seating with a view of Lake Michigan across a parking lot and street. Food is superb, and they have an adjacent speciality food and wine market. Very versatile locale, including great place for kids through to an intamate or group special occasion. Market is great as well, for take-home or picnic, etc. Wide variety of wines in the market, all available to picked and taken to your table with a nominal corkage fee."

  • "For something right around the corner and dependable, Convito is a great spot. Down the middle Italian, nothing too imaginative but pleasant. Their fish is better that their beef and the pastas could use a tad more interesting items. But, service is good and overall quality excellent."

  • "Food is consistently good here! Had a special holiday menu. Tried the Christmas salad with starfruit, pomegranate, greens and grilled cheese. Delicious! Am vegetarian so had their white bean soup that it super! Fellow diners had the grilled skirt steak, scallops, special petite quiche, hamburger and rotisserie chicken. All were great! Desserts also superb! Bread pudding is a must!"

  • "For a mid priced restaurant right around the corner, Convito is a worthy choice. It's not for foodies, but the food is good and the atmosphere is above average for a neighborhood restaurant."

  • "We had a lovely evening. Restaurant granted our table request when we made reservation. Food was good, however, I would not order the duck again. It had a strong grilled flavor and the cherry sauce did not have a lot of flavor and was very thin. That was disappointing. The pot pie looked amazing and I hear it was tasty. Skirt steak looked and tasted good, too. Squash soup was yummy and came nice and hot! Wouldn't order the crab cake again; it was bland, but the bruschetta was good and the calamari was tender. Desserts were all a hit! I would go back."

  • "Went back for a favorite and it was no longer on the menu. Had a hard time finding an entree to order. They try too hard with the fancy stuff. Couldn't get basic Italian but that's what works best unless the food is to die for. And it isn't!! Wine on the pricey side. Calamari have about 10 pieces!! What?? Ceasar was good. Chocolate dessert was the best! Not going back."

  • "What a grand experience. From the Moscow Mule, served in a copper cup that stayed absolutely frigid even after the drink was gone, thorugh the wine selections and into the meals (a rich mushroom soup, coq au vin and creme brulee for dessert with coffee for me) it was just wonderful. We have been going to this restaurant for decades. There can be a noise problem if you sit in the dining room at peak hours, but on a Wednesday night, they put us out on a little enclosed porch and it was just great. I would recommend this restaurant for anyone or two people looking for memorable food in a comfortable atmosphere."

  • "We had 2 guests with hearing deficits. Despite staff seating us at a corner table, the noise level with a full restaurant was terribly loud."

  • "I have been eating at Convito Café for years and it is always a very satisfying experience. They continually update their menu to keep you coming back. The food in their market is clearly outstanding too. Some people complain that the market is expensive; but, I say you get what you pay for."

  • "I took my 3 teen kids here on a weeknight. I had the Dover sole which was pretty tasty. One son had the spaghetti and meatballs which was pretty flavorless. My biggest gripe was they were playing pleasant music in the dining room and loud rap music in the kitchen which was overpowering the dining room. I asked for them to turn it down and the waiter said of course but nothing happened. We will not return."

  • "We enjoyed our meal fully. Good service, Good Food. Well priced. Reasonably priced wines. HOWEVER, a young couple brought in their 3 young children around the ages of 10 years, and these kids not only walked around their table but also ate pasta with their hands. Young and wealthy with no manners."

  • "Convito's always provides a great meal at reasonable prices. Service is prompt, the ambience is homey, and the choices are interesting. Wines are unusually limited in a wine shop, but sufficient. A real go-to place!"

  • "It has been difficult for me to find a true good Italian restaurant in the north suburb. This is a casual place with a touch of elegance, and I liked the authenticity they serve. Except pasta, which was over cooked and not al-dente at all, all what we ordered passed our test. (Yes, both my friend and myself are crazy fan of Italy, and know the taste they serve in Italy across the country.) The server of our table had quite good knowledge of Italian wine too, and the two bottles we ordered were both excellent with no high price. I am looking forward to visit them soon again."
