A word from Comstock Saloon
Named after Henry Comstock and the famed Comstock Lode, which brought mining fortunes to the City by the Bay, Comstock Saloon occupies a historic space that has served as a watering hole for San Franciscans since 1907.
Renowned bartenders Jeff Hollinger and Jonny Raglin of Absinthe Brasserie & Bar, partnering with Bill Russell-Shapiro and the Absinthe team, continue this tradition, offering patrons refined turn-of-the-century saloon fare, and assortment of snacks, and a menu of classic cocktails, such as Negroni and the Manhattan, in a setting that preserves the saloon's historic design elements and pays tribute to San Francisco's Barbary Coast. Chef Carlo Espinas, former chef of Piccino Cafe, oversees the menu.

  • "Came here for an evening dinner and drinks. Our reservation was honored in a timely manner and we quickly got drinks. Sometimes people stay for just drinks, so if make sure the waiter knows if you want to order food. I got the mushroom pot pie which was amazing. We also had the steak, oysters, chicken, crab dip, and fritters. All the food was delicious. The cocktails were also unanimously well received. And the band on the second floor provided great music."

  • "The chef is very creative. Menu is fairly short, but wide-ranging and imaginative. Noise level was very, very high (perhaps a Friday night phenomenon with the shrill voices of the twenty- and thirty-somethings) as bar scene seems quite successful. It will be interesting to see how the competition between bar aficianados and foodies plays out. Best to make a reservation (bar customers had to be cleared from reserved table). Waiter was very attentive. If you do not like country-western music, skip Sundays."

  • "Went here on a weeknight around happy hour, and found it very enjoyable. Decor is an upscale saloon, and hits the right design notes to get that across without being heavy handed or kitchy. It has a limited, seasonally appropriate menu and executes it well. The service was excellent. Barkeep was super friendly and makes excellent cocktails. Initially noise level was moderate, but when live music started it pumped up the volume to more bar, less restaurant conversation-appropriate levels."

  • "My wife and I had their prefixed dinner and it was outstanding! Thoughtful, sophisticated (enough) and down-home all at once. The drinks were crafted in the purist, but not pretentious style. We also love the new bar corner they added in the dinning area. Jeff and Jonny are really at the top tier of service, food and management, and that's saying a lot in San Francisco. Building their vision of Comstock Saloon using their solid class-act experience from years at Absinthe, they have definitely come into their own. It's a pleasure to come here and it is part of the City's tapestry for me – classic San Francisco charm. Try the bartender's whimsy when you go."

  • "The New Years Eve "45 day aged steak" was actually a watery slice of prime rib that was aged in a freezer for 45 days. Service was unattentive. It took 35 minutes and three requests to get our first round after we sat down. Will not be going back in spite of the fact that it is a gorgeous looking bar."

  • "We had reservations for NYE at 10pm and were not seated until 11pm! The host was very helpful and gracious so that made the wait not so bad. As for the meal we had called ahead to find out if there was a prefix menu and/or if people could order off the standard menu. We were told that yes there was a prefix but we could order a la carte. This was false of course and we only had the option of the prefix. I personally would of liked to try their regular menu. Lastly as it was NYE they did nothing for the countdown....nothing. Seems like an opportunity wasted. If you like a saloon vibe and good drinks this is a good place. However, I can only speak to the food that night which was good but I was not blown away."

  • "We nicknamed our server sourpuss if that's any indication. Everyone else we came into contact with, the host, bartender, floater/manager, and busboy- all attentive and really nice. Our server didn't want to be there and it showed. She frowned when she greeted us and frowned after taking our drink order. We asked how something was, she said, it's good but then she frowned! I didn't take it as a sign that the dish wasn't good and glad I didn't because both the lamb shank and pot pie were AMAZING. She disappeared half way through the meal and we never saw her again. We ordered couple rounds of drinks and dessert with another server (super friendly). We spent the rest of our meal making up stories about who she was, which was entertaining."

  • "The food was excellent. Continue to have an innovative menu. The grilled octopus was excellent. The physical ambiance is great - nice dining room. Marked it down due to the music. We hated the loud country western music. Later learned that it is a regular Sunday night special. So, unless you are a fan, avoid Sunday night."

  • "The food is fairly average, but then that's not really the main draw. The carefully restored historic interior, complete with spit channels in the floor and an intricate system of ceiling fans to keep the place cool, give the place a fun feel, while the cocktails (I'm told - I prefer beer) were excellent."

  • "Based on their website and yelp reviews, it sounded like they had a reliably good veg option, so I made reservations. Since two of us couldn't get an entree, we got a few items from the "snack" menu and had a cocktail before heading out to find dinner. The cocktails are pretty darn good, and the snack menu is good as well, I loved the crackers, but wished I could have actually had dinner there."

  • "The food is just odd. Also, very small portions and strange combinations? The kind of place you go to once to try but not again. The worst part is the band. I was showing someone around SF and read about the saloon decor - which is pleasant - but I expected the musically entertainment to someone fit the theme. It does not! No piano. BUT a blaring horn player? It is so loud and piercing to your ears that you just can't stay long. Why a brass section in such a small place?"

  • "Warning! The sample menu on the Comstock Saloon's website may be useful for Friday and Saturday meals, but unbeknownst to us, the Sunday menu is extremely limited. For example, it includes only one vegetarian meal. We were not interested in any of the meals listed, so we left immediately. This website forced me to include stars for Food, Service, Ambience, and Noise Level, but we left immediately, so cannot provide a proper report. Comstock came well recommended by friends in New York and New Orleans, so it's probably pretty good, but a first class restaurant always offers a solid menu."

  • "The food was good, not great. Consistent take on recent fads. Food seemed expensive for uninspired dishes, but I can't complain for getting these dishes at the hour we ordered. The servers did their job, but seemed very disinterested. I would only go for food if I'm hungry on a late night and I don't want fast food."

  • "Food was great, could be "fit for foodies", however the server and the manager/suit guy dropped the plates on the table on walked away. No explanation of what they just put in front of us. They just flung it on the table an walked away. No bueno. We will be back because everything else was great and its in our neighborhood."
