Diner Reviews
  • "My wife had wanted eat here for years, so for our 20th wedding anniversary I booked a dinner reservation with window sitting. We arrived and were seated promptly. Waitress came over asked for our drink order and within a few minutes we had our drinks and placed our dinner order. Food came and was very delicious cooked perfect. As we eat the restaurant began to rotate giving us a great 360° view of the city lights which my wife had never seen before. Overall experience was excellent and would recommend this venue to everyone to visit for lunch, dinner, drinks or dessert at least once."

  • "The food was great but we waited quite a while for our food and drinks. This made us a bit late for the concert."

  • "As always, the Compass Room / Grill has met my expectations for a first class restaurant. This has been my favorite dining spot downtown. The food has been excellent and is the service. The view of the city adds that extra special touch for a romantic evening with my wife."

  • "I recently just visited the restaurant for the first time and enjoyed myself on a first date with the exception of the steak. I will be sure to visit again for a special occasion."

  • "Great server and great table. Have wanted to dine here for quite some time. No pressure to rush through dinner. We could take our time and enjoy the experience. We will return!"

  • "Timing was geat for an outstanding sunset. Server was very enthuastic about menu selections as well as identifying Phoenix landmarks."

  • "We went here for our anniversary. Great choice. It is a revolving restaurant atop the Hyatt. It rotates 360 degrees in about 55 minutes. You get a great view of the city. For those who are not too familiar with Phoenix, there are small plaques which explain what you are looking at. Our server, Jerry, was absolutely wonderful. She took time to visit with us which made our experience most enjoyable. The prices are within reason, and the food was good. They have a very good wine menu with lots of choices, and a varied price range. It is great for a special occasion."

  • "It was our first time there and we loved it! It was very cool and different than your norm restaurant. Tried new things, and it was all very delicious!"

  • "We came here to celebrate our birthday's. We had a great dining experience. The servers were excellent and the food was very tasty. Our chairs were a little uncomfortable and I was a little disappointed to read reviews that indicated the dress code was professional casual, yet we saw many people with tee shirts and jeans. Several of the shirts appeared worn, just not what you want to see when you are expecting a upscale casual experience. Other than that all else was fine. we will be back soon."

  • "We have dined here at least once per year for the past ten years. This time was a disappointment. EXTREMELY slow service from Charo. After sitting for some ten minutes she finally arrived and took our drink orders. Ten minutes later she arrived to tell us the bartender was very busy and our drinks would arrive soon. Then she came back to say the bartender had no limes for my wife's Black Russian. When the drinks arrived she wasn't able to take our food orders right away. The Duck Confit Tostado appetizer was dry, as if it was yesterday's duck left out all night. When the meal arrived we asked for two glasses of wine. These did not arrive until we were half done with our meal. Shameful. And, of my 4 scallops, three were tough. Disappointed!"

  • "I should say up front that the manager comped the entire meal because of our feedback. Having said that, and to be as objective as I can be, we went there because my daughter and I were celebrating our mutual birthday of 4/4. One of our party ordered a pork chop, asked that it not be overcooked but served juicy. Came out dry. We told the waitress as much and jokingly asked to see the chef. He came out, very apologetic, offered free desserts and told us it was the first day of a new menu roll out. They were working hard to get it right. I had scallops, very gritty. Then the manager came over, we restated our concerns and she made it partially right by comping the meal. I would go back only because the staff was working very hard to please."

  • "We have enjoyed the Compass Restaurant for several years. You can't beat the view (especially at sunset) and the food and service are consistently great. Perfect place for a romantic dinner. . .my husband and I went there for one of our first dates and just celebrated our 30 year anniversary there!"

  • "This was the fIrst we experienced the restaurant but will not be the last. The servers were all very friendly, but John really made the difference. He was so and patient with all of our questions. He was fun to chat with and his service was very attentive. Thank you for a lOvely birthday dinner."

  • "Compass Arizona Grill never disappoints...always high quality creative and tatsty food with very good, but slightly slow. service. Reservations are punctual. Sunset view is best, but all views are good."

  • "Overall very nice dining experience. Painless valet parking ($12/hr). Quick evevator ride to the top. Attentive staff, although perhaps a bit slow given the few patrons. The food was above average but the side dishes were lacking some imagination ( the potato fingerlings were essentially dry French fries). The steak and lobster soup were excellent. The views however, are hard to beat, especially around sunset. Gorgeous views of the entire valley and close ups of downtown will not disappoint. Most of the window frames are labeled with descriptions of prominate views as you rotate. A full swing takes about 45 minutes or so. This is a nice place for a special occasion or just the view alone."

  • "Pleasant atmosphere. We loved the sunset panorama of Phoenix from the rotating dining platform. The food was exceptional and the portion sizes were perfect for our taste. The food presentation was delightful. Our complements to the chef and the wait staff."

  • "We went downtown to celebrate our 34th anniversary. Dinner at the Compass, Play at Herberger and sleepover at the Hyatt. Our food was outstanding. Great Presentation of all the courses. And the cornbread was to die for. Our server Maria was wonderful, always their when we needed her and she had such a pleasant smile. And the view, Wow!!!! Watching the sun set 24 floors up was awesome. As you circle the city in this rotating resturant there are plaques that explain what you are looking at. I never knew that years ago the Compass Room was a Playboy Club"

  • "The view is great, especially at night. The first time we ate here, there was a spectacular lightning show; this time it just the 360 degree view of Phoenix at night. The food is wonderful (rib eye steak, scallops, desserts), the service is among the best (thanks, Julian). It is expensive so it's not for every day but for showing off Phoenix to out of town guests, it can't be beat."

  • "Beautiful view from this rotating restaurant and reservation people were helpful and pleasant, but approximately half of the menu was unavailable. To make this worse, I had brought Japanese business guests and ALL of the fish items on the menu were sold out and not available--leaving only a few meat items to choose from. I've never before encountered a restaurant, let alone one on the top floor of a luxury hotel, that had such a problem. It was very embarrassing, and we were all flabbergasted when we were told that dish after dish on the menu was not available."

  • "I was disappointed that they don't have the many options of three wine flights any more. I enjoyed the variety. I always used to tell people how I enjoyed it when they would bring out a selection of steak knives and let you pick the one you wanted to use. They don't do that any more, either. Service seemed slow. Oh, well. Still a great location and great food."

  • "I went there to propose to my now fiance. The reason why I chose there was because I had heard the service and food were good. As well as the ambience. The ambience was very good. The view was great. However the service was not very good. I ordered a steak medium well. However when I got it it was more medium rare then medium well. Then my waiter attempted to convince me that is how a medium well steak should look. I let it go because didn't want to ruin the mood. Then the manager came over and asked how everything was. So I told her what had happened. She said I was right that it wasn't medium well. She took it back to have them recook it. When it came back it was cooked more but closer to medium then medium well. Not a great experience."

  • "A couple of years ago I had a great experience at this restaurant, so when a family get-together was planned, we returned (on my recommendation). I was embarrassed!! The quality of the food was acceptable (barely), but the service and the presentation was awful! Aside from the fact that everythin was a la carte, there was no garnishment, no effort to make the food presentable, and very little flavor, it was not hot and the service, while very pleasant, was extremely slow. The only think that kept us there was the view."

  • "The reason to go is for the sunset and city light views. The food is good, but not exceptional. Two of our four in the group ordered steaks, and good but not great. The balsamic sauce selected by both people tasted more like a chipotle ketchup than a balsamic reduction treat. The scallops were good, the quinoas was quite bland. The pear/ham appetizer was very good, 3 pieces for 4 people, but we shared and that was fine. We passed on desserts."

  • "we were very impressed by the service given by Maria, Nina, and the manager Marcie. They were all very attentive, and catering to our needs in a very timely manner, even though it was a very busy Saturday night. The view was excellent, the food was very tasty and the presentation was beautiful. Our overall experience at this restaurant was very good."

  • "Meat was dry carrots were hard took 15minutes before server acknowledged us then she doesn't even take our drink order. Very dissatisfied. Then she refers to my date as he's my husband. Very embarrassed for him."

  • "I'd read some of the reviews for Compass Grill before heading out and was pleasantly surprised how wrong so many people were about this restaurant. Most complained about the food, specifically the steak and I can honestly say that the steak I had was cooked to perfection and was of a high quality. Even my wife, whose not much of a steak eater, loved the steak she ordered. The service was well informed and very attentive. The view was very nice. We made it there to watch the sun set and were not disappointed. I'm more of a casual dining guy so maybe my level of expectation is not as high as say someone who dines out frequently but I enjoyed my visit to Compass Grill and would recommend it to anyone."

  • "It was my Daughter's 11th birthday and all she wanted was a grown up dinner at the Hyatt. Our reservations were at 7 we arrived a few minutes early, we were greeted and seated promptly. The hostess had a note card and was sure to acknowledge my daughter's special day. She left the card on the table for our server Julian. All of the wait staff who came to our table were sure to wish her well. We were seated by the window and she enjoyed the view and the plaques that told a little bit about the buildings that were near by. We really had a great time and the staff made the night perfect. They were attentive without hoovering but always available when needed."

  • "I made reservations a few days prior to our stay and requested a window table so our four year old son could enjoy the view. We arrived on time and were immediately denied the seat we had requested, even though we could see plenty of tables available at the windows. We were seated at a table too large for our party. We waited 45 minutes to be served our drinks and another twenty minutes for bread. The bread was common cornbread with butter, not at all what I'd expected ons restaurant with entrees averaging $40. I ordered the ratatoullie which was made with tofu and served a full hour and a half after our arrival. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant for anyone interested in timely service and good food."
