A word from Communal
Nestled in Historic Downtown Provo we have built the perfect home for Communal. Design by Benfell & Furr yielded a space that is both comfortable and modern. Clean lines and smart design set the stage for what could be the best meal you have ever had. Our private dining room is equipped with A/V equipment and is the perfect place for meetings or larger gatherings (up to 12). Communal easily handles large reservations of up to 20 and is ideal for special events seating as many as 40. The bar looks into the open kitchen and the seats there get you as close to the action as possible. Reservations are accepted and recommended. The menu, a la carte, gives you the opportunity to feel all the love that our local farmers & producers have for their products. Continued

  • "The two of us had a very enjoyable time. The waiters were all very informative had good suggestions and were very hipster. Loved that the food is locally grown and the shared portions. We had the olive/crostini appetizer, the chicken entree, grilled asparagus side and the lemon chiffon dessert. The chicken was good but nothing to write home about. Would go with a different entree next time. Asparagus was cooked to perfection. And while I'm usually a dark chocolate guy but the lemon chiffon with fresh fruit was a perfect finale. Go to Tucanos if you want to stuff your face, but if ambience, beautiful plating and smaller delicious portions are your style, Communal is for you. I thought the price was spot on for the experience. Will go back"

  • "Being out first time there (party of seven) our server told us to order four choices from each of the four categories. She told us it would be more than enough for all of us. The portion size left everything to be desired. "sharable" portions, unlike we were told by the server, would not have been enough for one. The pork was overcooked and tough. The tritip was cooked right, but seriously, was not enough for one person,let alone the seven we had. The bright spot in the meal was the root veggies - they were amazing. I would not recommend this to anyone - especially for the price."

  • "My husband and I love to eat out at "goodie" type places. Especially tapas places. This one was okay, but we left hungry. I felt like the cauliflower was really a serving for one and the meat was a serving for 1.5. I'm not saying that the food portions should be huge, but after seeing the bowl of mashed potatoes we could have gotten, we felt a little gipped. I also think it lost some of it's appeal by taking the plated food and putting a tiny portion on our very large plates. Makes it lose it's sex appeal."

  • "We arrived a couple minutes before our reserved time and were sat quickly however that was the only thing that happened fast. The hostess was preoccupied apparently with other things. She dropped our menus and walked away without another word. We sat for about 20 minutes before our server got to our table. She told us that she was just informed of us being there. After we ordered it was not too long before we started getting food. The food was decent but didn't leave us with a wanting to return for a particular item. The portions size in relation to quality and price seemed off. I left the restaurant wanting more."

Wish more restaurants took up this approach. It feels intimate and socially responsible without being too personal, in your face or preachy. I highly recommend Communal."

  • "We located the restaurant online and selected it because of the overall concept...love the idea of supporting local farms and their produce. Was prepared for what we might experience based on the reviews. Still, what a pleasant surprise it was as we ate each selection...we started with the lemony salad...so fresh tasting...absolutely loved it...next we tried the pork belly...it was great, too...the glaze was especially good. Next we had the pumpkin risotto...the thing that really made this dish was that it was garnished with pomegranate which provided a nice burst of flavor with each delicious bite. We also had the crispy polenta which was also excellent. For dessert we had the homemade butterscotch pudding and were not disappointed."

  • "I had to keep reminding myself I was in Provo! Communal can hold its own with some of the best meals I've had at wineries in the Napa Valley area, downtown SF, or LA. If you want really top quality local ingredients, prepared very well, and great (but not over the top) presentation, this is the place. Provo is lucky to have Communal. My wife, who is extremely particular about food, was happy with everything we ordered - don't recall that happening in Utah before now!"

For the full experience of what Communal has to offer, expect to spend between 50-75 dollars on a meal for two. The price point, however, is well worth the experience- knowledgeable and helpful wait staff and food that is conceptually balanced between fine dining and a good home-cooked meal. The food is thoughtfully prepared and masterfully executed. Truly, this is the type of dining experience the Provo area has needed for a while. Simply put, if you have a Mic occasion you want to splurge for, you owe it to yourself to visit Communal."

  • "Communal was a great place referred to me by a friend. It was a fun place with good food. A little pricey and the portion sizes were smaller than expected/heard about. Overall the family style idea was good and fun. Not maybe the best for a first date only because you are in close proximity with a lot of other people. Lastly making a reservation is easy and quick through the online reservation service, making dinner in Provo on a Saturday night less of a nightmare."

  • "We have wanted to try Communal for a long time and finally made it in this past weekend. Some things to know before you go; first, you may be seated on the long table rubbing elbows with strangers. Second, the food is served family style, so everyone (in your group) shares the different dishes. We are very particular about our food, and this couldn't have been any better! Everything was cooked to perfection, the recipes were delicious, and we loved everything. We also loved that they tell you where the food comes from and have the names of the farms/creamery/chocolate supplier right there on the menu. Everything is local and fresh and delicious! We will definitely be going back."

  • "I had been to Pizzeria 712 two years ago and Communal was recommended to a friend of mine. We had a delicious dinner, farm-to-table exquisiteness. My friend is mildly allergic to nuts and doesn't eat pork or beef. This didn't feel limiting at all. They had a broad selection of foods and were able to hold the nuts and bacon on a few of our dishes. The communal plates were fun. I always want to try everyones food anyway. The service was friendly, welcoming and helpful. I would highly recommend Communal for anyone in or travelling through Utah Valley."

  • "Amazing combinations of flavors. The 'family style' sharing accentuates the flavor of the food since you get a smaller portion than at a normal restaurant. You savor each bite and dont become numb to the flavors. I've had almost all of their meat selections and each dish has been the best presentation of that specific type of meat. The salmon is flaky and moist, the beef is falling apart with a spoon (yes, they serve it with a spoon), the chicken is crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The appetizers are perfectly sized to not overpower your stomach and are amazing flavors. Every side dish we had was eye rolling worth. I will go back, over and over."

  • "We had a big group, so we ordered lots of different dishes, and every single thing was amazing! The cinnamon and spices on the pears in the salad was just amazing. Chicken was also outstanding, as well as the Farro Salad and Cauliflower Side Dish. We had 2 vegetarians and there was plenty to choose from, although their menu has quite a bit of meat, especially pork. Almost all sourced seriously locally. The only thing I didn't love was the doughnut dessert - it just tasted like sugar. And I wish they had mixed drinks. Bring your own wine - theirs is spendy. Loved the big "communal" tables. Loud in there - be prepared for a lively evening."

  • "My extended family and I booked reservations through Open Table and found ourselves seated at Communal's long *communal* table. The couples on either side of our party of six looked like they were old hats at the communal dining experience, but still glowered at us as we sat down. I think it was because none of us are hipsters--we just like good food (yes, the two are not mutually exclusive). The menu was printed on thick kraft paper and both my parents got really faintly printed versions and ended up squinting; my grandmother gave up entirely. The wait staff was very friendly, but it took about 45 minutes for us to get our meals. When we did get them, the food was absolutely delicious. It almost made the rest worth it."

  • "This was my 5th or 6th time at Communal and my second dinner here, and I was a little disappointed. The last dinner we had was fabulous (the chicken was so, so good!) but this dinner was only so-so. It was definitely good, but it wasn't the call-up-your-family-and-everyone-you-know-to-come-eat-here-ASAP that the chicken was last time! Frankly, the dinner was worth (taste-wise) half what we paid for it."

  • "Our 2 salads and 1 sandwich took 30 minutes to deliver.The chicken was burnt not blackened and totally dried out. I ordered a grapefruit mash expecting a cooled drink with an added twist and got a room temp glass of grapefruit juice, it was very disappointing. Our menu was so washed out that we all had to look at the same menu. The music is so loud that it is nearly impossible to carry on a conversation. I had heard good things about the Communal, but left very disappointed."

The service was excellent and the atmosphere charming. Our party of 4 sampled many of the offerings and found each to be unique and enjoyable. The infusion of flavors were spectacular, even in something as simple as a tomato and avocado sandwich. Fresh and flavorful. It is a bit pricey but worth it."

  • "This place has a creative menu from fresh ingredients, and the service was superb. Our party of four ordered three entrees to share -- salmon, scallops, and steak. The waiter brought the salmon, scallops, and short ribs. We didn't even notice the substitution; we were focusing more on conversation. The short ribs were delicious anyway. But halfway through the meal, the waiter showed up with an order of steak, explaining that he'd made a mistake. We said, "Don't bother -- the short ribs were fine," but he insisted we try the steak. An unsolicited free entree to make up for an unnoticed mistake? That's great service. This might be my favorite restaurant in Provo."
